| The Carnelian Signet |
"That's one way to keep my attention." The Signet looks about. "Any injuries? Looks like our leader Elfino has kept in you in tip top shape, Qen."
She coils her whip and stares at the Hang in there, Kitty! poster. "I do wonder, when was this poster hung? How old is it?"
Elfino
|
Just to make it official, Elfino is going to make the Akizendri one of his leads. This will hopefully buy him some extra actions when we eventually run into the creature... assuming we ever do.
Action: Pursue a Lead (Akizendri) - Gives a +1 circumstance bonus to Perception or skill checks to investigate a designated subject.
Elfino sighs wearily. "Not ye too Signet. If yer not careful, all dis 'leader' talk will go ta me 'ead."
Now that the animated anatomical model has been dispatched, Elfino tries once again to test the whispered question aspect of the lab. Under his breath, he says, "Who tampered wid de formulae?"
Ekaterina Elvana
|
"Now what could have caused that manikin to attack I wonder? Ekaterina whispers to herself as she watches the manikin fall.
Thevenin Serkat
|
Thevenin takes a slightly different tack than Elfino.
"Why were the formulas changed?"
| GM Fuzzfoot |
The acoustics here are bad, so your voices can certainly carry and echo in weird ways. But the answers you get suggest something else.
You can attempt a Religion check to identify if there are any haunts within the room, or a Perception or Performance check to examine the acoustics of the room. Each character picks one option to roll.

"Hmm." She rolls up the poster and listens to each fold, each crinkle. Something about it doesn't sound right.

"The voice in my head said that because of the holiday schedule, the formulas had to be changed to accommodate the weary."
Thevenin looks skeptical. They try to remember their training on haunts.

Elfino

Elfino considers the answer he received. "Dunno whut answers yous are gettin', but I 'eard dat de cook changed de forumlae. Considerin' dere is no kitchen in de academy, I spect dis is gobbledygook."
He wanders around the room looking for anything that might explain the mechanism by which these bogus answers are being generated.

Ekaterina Elvana

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Ekaterina lets out a soft hmmm while considering the reply she received. "Of course it couldn't be so easy." she says with a huff.
| GM Fuzzfoot |
While the lab does have bad acoustics, the whispering doesn’t consistently carry. Instead, a pocket of planar energy from the Maelstrom generates noise in response to questions asked. These answers are haphazardly strung together from other statements previously uttered in this room, though they’re out of context and often wrong.
Congrats! One more mystery solved.

"So who wants to walk the hall alone to try to find the Disappearing Door?"
Elfino
|
Elfino is satisfied that they've unravelled the mystery of the laboratory. Turning to the others, he says, "Good work everyone. Time ta check out de disappearin' door. Stay 'ere a mo while I 'ead out into de 'allway."
The elf then slips out the lab door to see if the purported disappearing door appears. If not, he makes a detailed examination of the walls on either side of door to see if he can find any sign of what he suspects is some sort of secret door.

"If I wanted to hear this kind of rambling I would attend the parlor." The Signet huffs and rolls up the poster for safe keeping.
She gazes at the gallant leader as he takes take charge and goes alone into unknown realms.
Thevenin Serkat
|
"Doesn't the door only appear when someone is alone?"
Thevenin will cast guidance on whoever goes first.
Ekaterina Elvana
|
Ekaterina watches with an intense look on her face as the investigator moves down the corridor.
Termia
|
As instructed, Termia stays at standby. She observes intensely, and grasps her polearm tighter than usual: she had been caught off-guard by the attack of the anatomical manikin before, and she is clearly determined to be the first to act if anything sudden threatened the group again.
| GM Fuzzfoot |
The walls in this area are bright and newly white-washed. Elfino sees a door that previously was hidden from view. It is locked.
You can examine the enchantments on the door with an Arcana or Occultism check. Alternatively, you can examine the mechanisms that hide the door with a Thievery or Crafting check. One roll for each character, but this time you have 4 skills to choose from.
Quadennillia
|
If the door stays put when the rest of us enter the hallway, Qen will come out and take a look.
She has Arcana, Crafting and Thievery all at +7, so she will pick a method that the others are not attempting (as much) to cover as many bases as possible.

When Elfino finds the door, he calls the others over and shows it to them. "'Ere's de door. Quite well 'idden it is. Seems ta be locked. Let's see if I can do anythin' about dat." Pulling out his thieves' tools, Elfino gets to work on the lock

Termia
|
(In the exact opposite case as Qen, Termia is untrained in all relevant skills. My Dex 10 and Int 10 aren't doing any favors either. Probably better to not risk a critical failure.)
Termia positions herself close to the door. "It is possible that there is something dangerous on the other side of this strange door. But focus on your tasks, colleagues: I will keep watch."
Ekaterina Elvana
|
With nothing happening to the investigator Ekaterina decides the door is fairly safe enough and decides to take a closer look at the enchantments on the door.
Occultism: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
She turns her head this way and that, trying to make sense of the spells on the door. "I think...the spells look somewhat familiar?"
| GM Fuzzfoot |
Luckily, neither of those were critical failures. You barely solve this mystery.
While the door is set to appear and disappear depending on who's around, traces of magic have warped parts of the door. This magic is unlike anything you have seen the academy use, and is instead the work of a being tied to another plane of existence.
| The Carnelian Signet |
"I think that's all of them?" The Signet thinks. "Ah, except for Student #19. I wonder when they will arrive?"
Quadennillia
|
"The note mentions the class roster, so maybe we need to be in the classroom where they would normally be studying, or an administrator's office?"
Termia
|
"I would like to see this class roster," Termia nods in agreement. "Specifically, I would like to know the school's official explanation as to why the roster skips past a certain student number. Any irregularities should always be well-documented."
Thevenin Serkat
|
"Is there no more investigation with this door? I kind of want to open it."
Elfino
|
Elfino muses the strange extra-planar magic that has warped the door. "It seems dat dis is also de work of our putative Akizendri. If we can find dis infamous student #19, I spect dat dey'll 'elp us track down de creature."
When Thevenin mentions opening the door, Elfino agrees. "Aye, why not. We've come dis far, let's go all de way n see where it leads." The investigator then attempts to open the door in question.
Based on the map, it seems like there is some sort of lounge area on the other side; maybe Dacilane's office or something. If the door leads somewhere else, perhaps off-plane, then that might be worth investigating further.
| GM Fuzzfoot |
Using the keys you have, you can unlike the now found door.
Compared to the rest of the academy, this room seems informal and relaxed. A tufted sofa and armchairs provide comfortable seating, while a few tables offer space to spread out work. Letters and notes are pinned to the wall by the door.
It appears that this lounge provides an area for the teaching staff to prepare their lessons and enjoy their breaks. It also seems to serve as Headmaster Rosedell’s office. The notes and letters pinned to the wall are from current and former students. They range from updates on the now-adult
students’ lives to thank you notes from the parents of current students.

Thevenin will read some of the letters and notes, and then detect magic as they walk around.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
(@Ekaterina: Great use of "hmmmed" as a verb!)
| GM Fuzzfoot |
Termia finds an abandoned standard book of translation (Mahwek) has fallen beneath one of the couches and is covered in a thin layer of dust.
Elfino finds a student roster in plain sight on the table, and indeed there’s no student #19, though it appears to be because a series of students have transferred in and out rapidly in recent months. Perhaps it’s been easier for faculty to simply leave the number unassigned.
A halfling dressed in a white school uniform appears and giggles. Several bells around their wrist chime with every movement. “You’ve been caught after hours,” they say, nearly singing in glee. “Students are not allowed on Dacilane Academy grounds after hours. If I tell the headmaster, you’ll be in big trouble.” They giggle. The sound cuts through the otherwise quiet air of the school. “Of course, maybe there’s something you can do to stay out of trouble. I wonder what you can do so I won’t tell on you.”
A grin spreads across their face. Their teeth are sharper than a halfling’s ever should be.
“Oh, I know what you need to do. You can finish my homework! It simply must be done, and it’s so very late.” The halfling flashes their too-pointed teeth again as they prepare to open their satchel.

"I'm short, that doesn't make me a student," Qen says irritably. "Anyway, we were invited by J Dacilane himself, so I think you are the one who would be in trouble if you tattled."

The Signet's hand is on her whip. "Hello, Number 19. You've been naughty. Students like you shouldn't snoop around the faculty lounge."

"Wow, you have sharp teeth," Thevenin blurts out. They try to explain the situation, and how the Pathfinders have reason to be on campus.

"We've been sent here to investigate several mysteries. Are you involved with them?"
Termia

Termia frowns on the strange visitor's request, and glares at Elfino for his mocking tone. "Student 19," she scolds, "what you are suggesting violates the academic integrity and code of conduct of this academy. Section III, offenses, article 14: Unauthorized cooperation. Each student must complete their own homework assignments, personally. Do not think that the rules don't apply to you only because you are categorized as one of the school's seven mysteries!"
"You are, of course, permitted to ask for help for these assignments. And we may offer you hints, as we see fit. Will you cooperate?"
Intimidation, Coerce: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
(As usual, being a strickler for the rules doesn't earn Termia much respect.)
Termia even approvingly nods at the Carmelian Signet's threat of spanking. Physical reprimands are generally acceptable, according to her view.
| GM Fuzzfoot |
Well, there were a couple of ways to go here, but you didn't really discuss it before acting independently, so I will go with the majority of comments.
The halfling's face flashes with anger, elongating as he shifts back to their natural akizendri form. "Are you sure you don’t want to do your work?"
The creature in front of you looks reptilian. (picture on slides)
