The promised coach waits outside and takes the You to a Crox Manor, a walled mansion in the Petal District. Once the you arrive, Folon Crox emerges and greets you with wide arms and a smile. He is an elderly man, maybe into his seventies, that leans on a war scythe as if it was a wizard’s staff. He ushers you personally into his manor home, a well decorated, if macabre place with several paintings of feasts and revelries, though the color schemes for them are all dark and subdued. It is also surprisingly poorly-lit. Eventually you reach the dining room where his servants present an extravagant five-course meal while he regales the PCs with long-winded tales from his past missions.
”-and after we got past the orcs we found a Thassalonian ruin connected to Bellimarious. After 10,000 years her magic was still active if you can believe it. A white hemisphere completely impenetrable. We even blew a scroll of limited wish to try at take it down. . . Nothing. Marvelous! Though less so now that she is back I suppose. . . Maybe we could arrange an audience with her and ask what it was about. . . Kinda takes all the fun out of it I suppose.“ he trails off with his latest story.
The food you are served has been excellent thus far.
[spoilers=Perception DC 20]You notice several of the paintings, though not all, depict diseased or rotting food, and some of the revelers appear to be very pale and emaciated[/spoilers]

Perception (E): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Isurus partakes of the feast cautiously. So far everything has been well prepared and apparently free of poisons, but one can only trust a stranger so far. His phosphorescent spots glow a muted white, illuminating the area immediately around him in the gloomy light of Crox' manor. "I suppose," he agrees with their host.
Alaric Salisfer

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Alaric sits at the meal in rapture of the stories as he had not even dreamed of such things yet. Though a man that worked with devils was always on edge a bit, if not physically then certainly mentally. He waves a finger to the paintings. "Say Folon, What's with all of the paintings. Each seems a bit...macabre?"
| Vampire GM By Day |
Crox perks up at the mention of the paintings. ”Oh, do you like them? I knew the painter for many years, he was an Absolom native. Died oh, five years back. Left several apprentices though, I’ve been beginning to get into their work. That is one of the apprentices work over there,” he nods to one painting or slightly more expressionist bent than the others in the corner of the dining hall.

When Alaric mentions the paintings, Kyra looks up at them--

She studies them for a second, wondering if they have some religious significance.

Jaxon is chowing down on several of the dishes when the conversation turns to the paintings. He hardly noticed them, but then looks up. "Oh, those are...interesting. He certainly had a style, eh?"
| Vampire GM By Day |
"Yes he did," he says wistfully. "If you can't tell they were all done in honor of Urgathoa-now before you get all mad and declare me evil, let me explain. Many forget that she is the god of partying and sexuality . . . having fun! That's what I enjoy about her. Yes there's the undead bit, but, I've taken lessons from that and learned how to control evil undead that were attacking fellow pathfinders and put them to rest. And sure, there is the whole godess of disease thing, but honestly, I've used that too. Given someone a serious, but not fatal, disease, incapacitated them, and then boom, we get to move on and not have to kill anyone. People forget how . . . er, utilitarian she can be."
With that he sighs a heavy sigh. "The Modern Urgathoa church though, I can understand why you might be unhappy with them, I am to! They seemed to have forsaken all this useful stuff and these days only concentrate one spreading plagues and raising undead against the will of the formerly living. I did my best to temper the more maniacal sect but I'm afraid one lone wizard-not even a member of their clergy- could only do so much. So I have been forced to break ties with the orthadox Urgathoan church. Can't even attend mass anymore. So sad." Just then a servant comes in and whispers something in his ear.
"What? Are you serious? Now?! I'm entertaining guests!"
The servent whispers some more words and Crox throws down his napkin in disgust and stands up.
"Oh the humiliation. Oh I am so sorry my new friends. Seems one of my barges is in Diobel and the paperwork won't let it sail back to Absolom. My money is on some enterprising but unscrupulous harbormaster there is trying to get a kickback. You know how those Diobel types are. I'm sorry, I must teleport to Diobel at once and sort this out. NO! You stay. Your rooms are already done up! Fit for royalty . . . and I'd know, I've hosted several of them here myself. I hope to be back before breakfast, but if not, my servants will take care of that for you too. I'll hope to catch you before you head out tomorrow. If not, it was lovely chatting with you, and hope to see you again soon!"
Samna Tranth
|
Though she has been enjoying the meal, Samna is quietly relieved when their host leaves.
"I've never met an Urgathoan quite like that. I suppose the Society is keeping a good eye on him. One day you partying hard, then BAM you wake up all groggy the next day and you're a floating skull with gems for eyes."
Kyra'
|
Kyra smiles at Samna, and starts to giggle, imagining master Crox turning into a floating skull.
She sighs:
"My companions making hellfire and summoning undead, having dinner with a follower of Urgathoa... okay. But if things turn to Asmodeus and Rovagug, well, I cannot have that open a mind."
Kyra looks at the servant who whispered to their host, and to the rest of the manor's help-- do they seem alive?

Dyner gives Kyra a nod as she patches up the last of her dripping acid wounds. "Thank-you. I'm not sure I could have done that half as well."
She gets a bit nervous as the event gets closer, tugging at the new clothes she changed into before coming over, but not quite sure her best frock is even presentable.
Sitting down at the dinner table she tries to be a good guest and use the correct oyster fork.
Cooking Lore: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
She at least finds the oyster forks, but does seem to have pause over which one is for the the pre-dinner oysters and the post dinner oysters. She enjoys the cooking, though and tries to take mental note to ask the chef if she ever gets the chance.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
She fails to notice the patinings until the things are pointed out to her, ad gulps slightly at the mention of Urgathoa. She hadn't tasted anything that was off, or worse poison... or was that a different deity. Anyways maybe not eating that 8th piece of that delicious, beak-watering, yeast, warm bread would be a good idea.
She does try to hide her cackle of laughter at the thought of someone waking up as an undead from a hard night of partying.

Kyra smiles at Dyner--

--but soon is frowning again.
When the host is gone, and the servants are outside, Kyra whispers to her comrades:
"Everyone is alive and well in here, at least there's that. Because the Urgathoan church had mellowed down somewhat, that is probably when our host joined. They were taking people who had no ill intents.
But nowadays they have become fanatical again, wiping out those more temperate members. Evil doers rule that church once more.
Maybe they will move against Crox who - I imagine... and hope! - is not an evil person."
Isurus

"I am still suspicious of becoming someone's meal," the azarketi comments gloomily after their host teleports away. "The surface has other less concerning deities of revelry."
Jaxon Richter

Jaxon stares open mouthed...still food in it...as their host reveals his worship of Urgathoa, and then disappears to take care of some business. He swallows. "Well damn. I just figured the god of revelry, it would have been Cayden Cailean. But I suppose his is just drink, not food." He shrugs. "Ain't never been much for studying gods. But, he's a senior Pathfinder, right? He wouldn't hurt us."
He glances around at the room's decorations and then down to the food. He shrugs again. "I mean, it ain't killed us yet, right? And if it would, then it would anyway. We've already all eaten." He reaches over to grab more food.
Kyra'

"We can get that servant, the one who whispered the news that made our host leave, to find out if the problem of the barge in Diobel is true or just some ploy to block us here."

Everyone’s amenities are extravagant and you all get a good night’s sleep. In the morning you are greeted with a well-made breakfast (at least craft-cooking DC 20). After which it is getting on in the day and Folun hasn’t returned. The head servant lets you know that carriages have been arranged to take you back to skyreach. Just as you are heading out the door you hear from the courtyard a ruckus.
”Folun Crox! The church is most displeased with you! You have dared blaspheme against our lady, and now you will die for such a slight!”
Throwing open the door, you see a lady dressed in hides around a pile of dead servants.

After a devastating hit from Semna and an attack from Jaxon, the ?Urgathoan? drops her staff and raises her hands in the air, and laughs a bit.
“Alright, alright, you got me, I surrender.”
As you ready for some trick she casts a spell and seems to become a bit healthier as she tries to put out the flames. At the same time you see the ‘dead’ servents stand up, very much alive, and dust themselves off and grumble that they aren’t payed enough for this.
It is all very confusing until you see Ambrus Valsin stride into the courtyard with Folun in tow.
”Good job recruits, darn good job. Sorry about the theatrics and deceiving you, but as part of our final tests we wanted to see how you would react in an actual emergency. You would Amy believe how many so-called pathfinders have run off and abandoned their fellow members at the first sign of real trouble.
“Don’t worry,” pipes up Crox. ”My magics made sure no one got hurt too much. I was also the one who put the ritual over the stadium. That is to say, the same thing over the stadium that prevented killing I also put over my mannor.”
The ?Urgathoan? Extends a hand to shake to both Samna and Jaxon. ”Good job on hanging up on me you two. You really were workin’ me over. I’m Mirielle by the way. Actually I’m a Druid truth be told. I just drew the short straw to test you guys.”
”Again, we are sorry about the subterfuge.” Valsin apologies. ”Rest assured, you will be well compensated for your troubles. And thank you Crox for use of your Mannor.”
”No problem!” Crox responds. ”Most fun I’ve had in weeks.”
Scenario over. Feel free to RP. I’m going to try to get the sheets out in the next day or two.
