The Mistress Aria Tannenbaum of Tannenbaum's Chalice grimaces slightly at Guiscard's description of his original mission.

"Oooh, that's really quite unfortunate... not that the Lantern Bearers are eager to trumpet this information about themselves, so it's no fault of yours that you're not aware of this, but the division of the Illuminated Scribes that is in charge of the sorts of materials you'd be interested in looking at is... is really odd, and probably going to be difficult to approach productively outside of a very specific set of circumstances."

"They're known as the Order of the Veil, Mask, or Cloak, and they're easily identified, as they have metal visors which cover their eyes, and are also mute and deaf. They communicate and navigate with powerful psychic abilities, and they're not exactly eager to share whatever knowledge they unearth. They're incredibly invested in uncovering various kinds of illicit or forbidden arcana -- demonic pacts, blood magic, fleshweaving, that sort of thing."

"However, I have come into possession recently of some relevant knowledge regarding the investigations of a small cabal of the Illumined Scribes of the Order of the Veil which may be of interest to you -- it seems that some of them have either uncovered ancient arts relating to a form of tattoo magic, or have developed it themselves. The procedure seems to be that willing or unwilling recipients are covered with tattoos and then dispatched to dangerous locales that might somehow 'trigger' a mystical effect where those tattoos will resolve themselves into powerful, novel spells. I heard a strange, and frankly disturbing story about a cadre of prisoners who were released to conduct what was effectively a suicide mission after they had been covered with these markings by the scribes -- all but one perished in the demon-haunted ruins of Haka'torvhak, and the sole survivor is said to have returned with a very potent new spell written on his skin."

Sieghart listens intently, especially once Aria begins talking about tattoo magic.

"That sounds almost like a Dragonmark. And these scribes are investigating it?" Strictly speaking, this was not actually Sieghart's problem. His unique condition rendered him a member of a Dragonmarked House in name only, and it wasn't as though magicians weren't marking themselves up with magic all the time. But... "Sounds like ghastly business. These Scribes are just allowed to do that to people?"

Tyrant frowns at all of Giri's questions. Instead of answering, he turned to Sieghart, the only other human nearby. "Is this whelpling yours? If it is, perhaps you shouldn't let it walk around freely and speak so much, lest something happens to it.

"I'd not expected the local religion to be so very disturbingly cultish. They barely have the veneer of civilized religion about them, it sounds."

Sieghart...

The mistress of the house purses her lips in thought,

"Hmmm... yes, now that you mention it, I can certainly see the similarity between this purported new form of magic and dragonmarks... which raises so many other questions, doesn't it?" to her second question she just chuckles wryly, "look, friend, I come from Aundair -- I wonder if you've ever heard of the zealots, who are native to my home -- they're fanatics in the service of the Sovereign Host whose sole aim is to outclass the zealousness of the Silver Flame adherents in neighboring Thrane. The Lantern Bearers are cut from the same cloth, they're just a hierocratic sect that focuses on one member of the Host -- Dol Arrah. The members of the Order of the Veil are not a gross aberration of this sect -- they operate comfortably within its fold and encounter no serious opposition to any of their activities. The barristers of this city are mostly affiliated with the Illuminated Scribes in some fashion, though the priests serve as the arbiters. But the hierarchy of the Lanterns are the beginning and end of the law here, out on the edge of civilization. Whose going to tell them what to do in their own city, whether it's just or not?"

"I'd not expected the local religion to be so very disturbingly cultish. They barely have the veneer of civilized religion about them, it sounds."

Aria re-emphasizes her point, "I suppose you've never spent much time in the Kingdom of Aundair then? There's a local flavor of Sovereign Host adherents there that are very similar to the Lantern Bearers. And I'd say Aundair counts as much for civilization as basically anywhere else in Khorvaire. Maybe you have a slightly too rosy conception of religion that's being slowly deconstructed by experience? I'll be honest, I never was too keen on the whole business, but my subsequent days and years have only decidedly reinforced that early impression."

"Well, there are a lot of advantages to be gained, and inhibitions to be cast off, in these strange outposts of civilization. It's likely other Sovereign Host adherents might unite against a group like this in many regions of central Khorvaire, but the remoteness of Daal-Aryn leaves the Lanterns without much supervision or opposition..."

Giridonyth has a very serious expression on his face at the mention of Dragonmarks and 'strange tattooed individuals with magical powers' and goes silent at the exchanges. He decides to suppress his nervous feelings by shoving more food into his stomach.

That sounds Aberrant! I...should probably tell the House... Giri thinks to himself.

Vinexa wrote:

That's what I assumed but I didn't want to act on it until I was.

Vinexa very much enjoyed what she saw, both of Garrett and several other of the serving boys and girls. Vinexa looked at Garrett and said, "Oh, I can think of so many things you can do for me,"[b] she smiled naughtily at him and then practically purred out, [b]"or to me for that matter." Vinexa looked to her food and then back to Garrett before adding, "You should come join me on your break Garrett, or when you are done for the day, whichever comes first."

Garrett cracks a devilishly handsome grin whose intensity strains his cheeks. His ridiculous, garrishly colorful outfit - apparently a kind of Aundarian kitsch which characterizes the decorative aesthetic of this establishment - does nothing to obscure his physical beauty. The youth leans in close to Vinexa and whispers several naughty thoughts almost inaudibly into her ear. He then smiles again and beams at a visibly shocked Ivanova as he returns to his duties. Vinexa will see the young man again.

The serving girl Ivanovna glare icily at her Mistress as she disparages the good intentions of the Lantern Bearers, furiously retracing the holy sign of the Order of the Ankh in the air before her heaving breast. Several of the other servers roll their eyes in exasperation at her unprofessional paroxysms.

Vinexa smiled wickedly and stroked Garrett's cheek lightly after the naughty suggestions he made to her. She gave Ivanova an amused look at her exasperation and held up a bite of one of the vegetables and sensuously eating it as she held Ivanova's eyes with her own.

Vinexa turned to her food then as she half-listened to the conversations around her. It was helpful knowledge but she was far to busy eating to get involved in it. When she heard Aria's words about the Lantern Bearers Vinexa caught the way Ivanova glared at Aria's. Unable to resist the urge to mess with her Vinexa waited until Ivanova's eyes swept past her and, timing her actions well, blew a kiss at her and winked as the other servants were rolling their eyes.

Is everyone about ready to go to bed? If so, I'll write up a post to that effect tomorrow, just let me know, I don't want to cut anyone off.

Now properly-full of food and drink and starting to feel the night doing its dark work, Sieghart cracked his neck and suppressed the urge to yawn.

“Hey, proprietress.” he tried to grab Aria’s attention. “As much as I’d like to enjoy the entertainment and the company a bit longer, I put a bit too much road behind me today, and it’s about time I start thinking about getting to bed. So, where should a guy go to bed down in this place?”

Yeah. I’m cool to bed down for the night.

Yeah. I’m cool to bed down for the night.

Aria nods,

"Very good, Master Sieghart, I was actually just about to suggest we all turn in -- the Night of Hopeful Judgment will not actually disgorge the fiends of the Khyber, but it is an uncertain time when many of the less lawful elements in the city may be afoot. It would be best if we secured ourselves within our sleeping chambers, and waited patiently, and safely, for dawn to come once more."

Aria claps her hands firmly, summoning the serving staff,

"Come on then, show our guests to their quarters, and then go see yourselves to your own lodgings, either here or in your own homes."

She turns back to the group,

"I have several options available for your accommodations tonight, with accompanying, and expected, variations in price. A communal room will cost less, with a decrease in price depending on the number of lodgers in a given chamber, while private quarters will incur a greater cost."

"I'll give you a moment to discuss the matter amongst yourselves while I settle the final matters for the evening with my staff."

As she walks to the back of the bar to address her staff, Aria discretely approaches Vinexa,

"You'll excuse me, Mistress Vinexa, that I couldn't help but notice your... quick rapport with Garrett -- which is to say, I hope it isn't presumptuous of me to assume you'd like to procure a private chamber for yourself. Luckily for you, I had a last minute cancellation from a Brellish merchant convoy that seem to have been held up unexpectedly in Newthrone. My staff dubbed it the 'red room' because of the furnishing, which is indeed just the color you'd imagine. It's in the upper floor of the tower -- and it's yours for the asking as long as you're amenable to what I hope you'll appreciate is a price equal to the service[s] I'm offering."

The Mistress of the House purposefully emphasizes the plural of 'service' as if to emphasize that it is not only the room, but perhaps the um.... other forms of entertainment Vinexa might enjoy in said accommodations that is explicitly on offer

Sieghart's yawn proves contagious as Guiscard's mouth opens in one of his own.

"Quite. As much as I've enjoyed socializing...well, there will be plenty of time tomorrow."

"I'd prefer a private room if you please, Mistress Aria. Furthermore I'd appreciate it if you had a room with a comfortable armchair, or could have one brought up, rather than a bed. Regretfully I couldn't bring my own bed with me, and the...flatness of human beds leaves me quite stiff."

Sieghart glanced at the others while taking account of his own personal finances.

"I'd also like a private room, if possible. I want to do some maintenance on my gear before I go to sleep, and I wouldn't want to keep anyone up."

Vinexa had finished eating about the time that Aria began trying to herd people to rooms. She rose from the table and stretched, her arms going high above her head and the her body bending backwards. She wasn't as limber as a contortionist but she could certainly bend back wards much further than most humans could ever hope to mange.

When Vinexa straightened up again she yawned and the ears atop her head twitched a few times before she started to move. It was about then that Aria caught her aside from the others and offered her the room that had recently become available. "I believe that would depend upon just how much the room costs for the night. If it is more than I can afford perhaps alternate methods of payment could be arranged?" She arched one delicate eyebrow and purred in a suggestive way at the end of her question.

"Right. A bath. I could actually use one of those, too, if possible." Sieghart pulled a few extra coins from his wallet, both to cover the cost and a little extra as gratuity for the extra work at the late hour.

Ok, so just to confirm -- Tyrant is in his own room, as is Sieghart and Guiscard, probably Vinexa too. Giri is in a room with others, not only his handler but additional travelers as well.

Tyrant doesn't care if it's a private or communal room. He'll take a private one if offered, but he's got no preference.

Vinexa grinned and said, "True, but this close to the last minute it may be tough to find someone who would take the room tonight. I'm sure that, since you have only the people here already, and we were the last to arrive, that they all have their rooms already." Vinexa shifted and looked around, "Now some of those from the group I came with might be interested but they also might not be. You have me interested already though so that surely puts us back to at least the normal price of the room. That I am willing to work for you in such a room in the future is surely worth something of a discount I mean," Vinexa stepped back and twirled, "look at me, I am gorgeous and exotic and," she batted her eyelashes and then made the "sad kitten eyes", "and oh so adorable."

With a laugh Vinexa finally concluded her pitch and said, "Why not call this an audition of sorts? I get a discount for the night in the Red Room, if I perform to your satisfaction, or whoever you want to oversee the 'interview' I enter into a contract to work for you for a period of time both as an available attraction for the Red Room and as a performer down here."

That sound correct, with the caveat that Tyrant is having a bath first, so if anything happens in the first...hour(?) after we turn in, that's where he'd be.

Aria flashes a strange mixture of a smile and a frown, a peculiar expression which reflects her simultaneous respect for Vinexa's stubborn business sense coupled with an clear irritation at not getting her way -- a circumstance with which this enterprising Aundarian maid is not well acquainted, "Well, I suppose I could offer you a small discount if the agreement is that you might offer certain additional services in the future. I have a number of customers who are less scrupulous evangelists with... specific tastes. Given the current state of the city, I like to keep an ace in my pocket -- a little leverage."

Yeah I figure House Tharashk is gonna occupy one of the communal rooms.

Giri falls asleep pretty quickly with his book in his arms. He mumbles in his sleep as he twists and turns to get comfortable. "I ain't...afraid of no Khyber. I'll... beat up...all the bad dragons."

The evening ends about 10:30pm, and the various guests depart for their single or shared rooms. Vinexa receives an expected visitor in the Red Room around 11:00pm. The evening is uneventful until about 3:00am, at which point a loud, blood curdling scream rends the night air.

Giridonyth sits up in his bed, his mouth open in shock and whispers, "The bad Dragon and his demons from the priest's story must be here!" He climbs out of bed and goes to the door to peek outside the room. If nothing is immediately apparent, he keeps moving to the common room or whatever direction the scream came from.

Reading about Vinexa's sidequest, blood-curdling screams, and Bad Dragons all in a row puts bad images in my head.

Guiscard awakens with a start, and levers himself out of his chair with a groan. Rubbing his eyes blearily, he adjusts his robes and rummages around until he finds his wand uncomfortably jammed into one of the pockets.

He taps himself with it as he moves to open the door.

Just giving myself a hit from the wand of Mage Armor.

Sieghart had just finished doing maintenance on his weapon. The finely-crafted steel sword was meshed with a mechanism resembling something from a House Cannith workshop. Six chambers were specially-fitted for loading cartridges filled with a substance processed from soil and mineral taken from Manifest Zones. Earlier in the night, he had taken the weapon apart, cleaned and oiled each of the weapon’s moving parts, and then reassembled it, only having finished checking the pull on the trigger mechanism when the scream cut through the meager light. Sieghart bolted up in his seat, rocking the tools on the desk he’d co-opted as a workbench. And he was just about to head to sleep, too.

“That didn’t sound like the usual festival noise.” he said, getting to his feet. He took a look out of his room’s window while donning his armor and coat, and left his room. A local would probably know whether or not this kind of commotion was normal. If it was really cause for alarm, he’d need to signal to Fenrir quickly.

The door won't budge! It appears to have been barricaded from the outside - a heavy piece of furniture or some other obstruction stands in the way.

The door is blocked.

Tyrant grunted as his sleep was disrupted by something screaming. With annoyance, he raised his head to listen for danger. What seemed like the entire building was scrambling to figure out what was going on. "Whatever is out there," Tyrant said to himself. "Better be at least twice my size so that the thud of it hitting the ground is satisfying enough to warrant this rude awakening."

Tyrant will leave his room/communal sleeping area to find the source of the ruckus.

Guiscard scowls.

"You think to trap me with a simple barricade?" he half-shouts, and then points his finger at the door. A small boulder impacts it moments later.

Damage: 5d6 + 10 ⇒ (3, 5, 1, 5, 6) + 10 = 30

Casting Stone for 1 MP. The average door has 15 hp and 5 hardness, so it should shatter from this. I don't think the half-damage from energy attacks clause applies since I think a high speed rock would fall under "Some energy types might be particularly effective against certain objects, subject to GM discretion."

“You know, I was just starting to think the night was starting to look up.” Sieghart tapped the flat side of his gunblade against his shoulder, lining up a powerful swing to break through the door and whatever was behind it. “If anyone's alive on the other side of this door, I'd recommend moving. But, this is kind of your fault, anyway." He planted his feet and placed one finger on the gunblade's trigger. "I was so looking forward to getting a good night’s sleep, too.” He gripped the gunblade’s handle in both hands and swung it down against the door with all of his strength. As he swung, he pulled the trigger in the handle, releasing the condensed magical energy in the loaded cartridge and sending a booming explosion of fire magic along the edge of the blade.

Damage to door: 1d8 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 171d6 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Full-round action to line up the shot and automatically hit an inanimate object. Power Attack, Two-Handing, Trigger Attack. The d6 damage is fire.

Giri is surprised a second time this night. His mind reels from the implications! The Bad Dragon's minions locked me in here because I'm a threat! That means I have to get out of here and stop them! The wyrmling thinks to himself. Giridonyth glances back to see if anyone else in the room has woken up yet, shrugs and reverts to his natural form.

The magic concealing his true nature ripples and in the blink of an eye, Giridonyth stretches up against the door while standing on his hindclaws as he rises to the height of an adult humanoid. A fancy silver circlet adorns his head and his backpack fits slightly easier in his natural state. He braces himself with his foreclaws on the sides of the door as he takes a deep breath. The corners of his ridged maw quirk upwards with barely contained mirth before opening and releasing a steady stream of acid.

Vinexa had really enjoyed the night. In fact the evidence of that was still lying in bed next to her asleep when the scream woke her up. Vinexa was awake and out of bed in a heartbeat, she'd learned to react quickly when there was possible danger, she had to if she wanted to survive in this world. It looked like her lover was still sound asleep, probably would stay that way since she had snuck in a feeding on him during their fun last night. It wasn't much but she also didn't want to make it obvious she'd done something to him. She suspected he had enough personality that only taking a nibble wouldn't be noticed.

Used drain touch to deal 1 Cha damage during the fun so he wouldn't notice. It will heal naturally after a nights rest once I use the point or dawn comes and my pool drains.

Vinexa heard the banging as some people tried to get their doors open and realized that there was a problem and she likely couldn't get out that way. Instead Vinexa quickly puled on her dancing garb that was strewn across the floor and then her pack as she looked around her for a window.

My intention is, if there is a ledge, to go out the window and try to reach one that leads into the hallway to see what is happening. I won't Garrett up unless she thinks leaving him in the room will put him in some kind of danger.

Tyrant scoffed at the door. He checked to make sure it wasn't simply locked, but if it was more than that or if he couldn't open it regardless, he would raise his arm, electricity crackling from scale to scale, and slams it into the door.

Door Destruction: 1d6 + 11 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + 11 + (5) = 22 Second roll is electric damage, so at half is 20 total, which I believe someone mentioned was standard.

If he needs another good Slam, he'll do so. Once free, he'll check his surroundings.

Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20

What was keeping the doors closed?
