Round 5

Magilla – AoO Bite vs. Xallis’ AC 25: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (10) + 17 = 27
Damage: 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (1, 2) + 7 = 10

Xallis Fort save, heroism: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 2 = 10 Fail
Xallis Fort save, heroism: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 7 + 2 = 14 Fail
Con Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6

The hag bites Xallis when he tries to escape. Her bite infects him with a fast-acting disease called Demon Fever that immediately takes effect. Xallis breaks out into a cold sweat and feels extremely frail. His ray hits the hag who shrugs it off and cackles with glee.

Magilla bites Xallis with an attack of opportunity for 10 damage. Xallis is also diseased with Demon Fever. The onset is immediate and he takes 5 Con damage and 1 Con drain. (The second Con save is to see if 1 point of Con damage becomes drain or not.) Xallis’s scorching ray hits but night hags are immune to fire.

Estella AoO Bite, cursed vs. Succubus’ AC 20: 1d20 + 15 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 15 - 2 = 32
Damage: 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (5, 3) + 7 = 15

Succubus Fort save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20 Success

The succubus reaches out again and the hag bites her fingers. ”Not today demon.”

Succubus fails to grapple Estella. Estella hits with an AoO for 5 damage after DR. The succubus passes the save against the disease.

Estella dismisses her etherealness and moves towards the door.

Magilla presses the advantage against Xallis. ”Not feeling so good, summoner? Demon Fever is extremely potent and painful, most don’t last more than a day or two after contracting it. I’d be doing you a favor by killing you now.”

Magilla - Bite, power attack vs. Xallis’ AC 25: 1d20 + 17 - 3 ⇒ (15) + 17 - 3 = 29
Damage: 2d6 + 7 + 6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 7 + 6 = 23

Magilla - Claw, power attack vs. Xallis’ AC 25: 1d20 + 17 - 3 ⇒ (19) + 17 - 3 = 33
Damage: 1d4 + 7 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 7 + 6 = 17

Magilla - Claw, power attack vs. Xallis’ AC 25: 1d20 + 17 - 3 ⇒ (13) + 17 - 3 = 27
Damage: 1d4 + 7 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 6 = 14

Magilla tears into Xallis leaving deep bloody gashes. Already weakened by the disease, he falls.

Magilla hits Xallis three times for a total of 54 damage. Xallis drops to -10 hp and is dying. With the 1 Con drain, he’ll die at -13 hp.

Cursed:
The cursed creatures take a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks until a remove curse spell is cast upon them.

Dying:
A dying creature is unconscious and near death. Creatures that have negative hit points and have not stabilized are dying. A dying creature can take no actions. On the character’s next turn, after being reduced to negative hit points (but not dead), and on all subsequent turns, the character must make a DC 10 Constitution check to become stable. The character takes a penalty on this roll equal to his negative hit point total. A character that is stable does not need to make this check. A natural 20 on this check is an automatic success. If the character fails this check, he loses 1 hit point. If a dying creature has an amount of negative hit points equal to its Constitution score, it dies.

Invisible:
Invisible creatures are visually undetectable. An invisible creature gains a +2 bonus on attack rolls against sighted opponents, and ignores its opponents’ Dexterity bonuses to AC (if any).

Ethereal:
An ethereal creature is invisible, insubstantial, and capable of moving in any direction, even up or down, albeit at half normal speed. An ethereal creature can move through solid objects, including living creatures. An ethereal creature can see and hear on the Material Plane, but everything looks gray and ephemeral. Sight and hearing onto the Material Plane are limited to 60 feet.

Force effects and abjurations affect an ethereal creature normally. Their effects extend onto the Ethereal Plane from the Material Plane, but not vice versa. An ethereal creature can’t attack material creatures, and spells you cast while ethereal affect only other ethereal things. Certain material creatures or objects have attacks or effects that work on the Ethereal Plane.

An ethereal creature treats other ethereal creatures and ethereal objects as if they were material.

Sickened:
The character takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks.

Henrika, Trevor, Tychus, and Icabhod go.

With Xallis’ Spellcraft +24, taking 10, he’ll only need to roll on items with CL 20 or greater now. So most items, I’ll just provide what they are unless a roll is needed.

Estella has nothing of value on her. Illumia and Magilla each had a few minor things.

They each had:
Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds
Ring of Protection +1
Courtier Outfit
Ivory Ring (worth 200 gp)

Most the of the tea sold at Sweet Dreams is of average quality. The stock behind the counter includes a small locked chest. The lock is beyond Icabhod’s ability and would be a challenge even for Navia if Xallis were to summon her, so you need to resort to breaking it open. Inside, the chest contains medicinal Red King tea from Vudra. Each cup of which acts as an antitoxin and antiplague. The chest contains enough loose tea to prepare 15 cups, worth a total of 2,250 gp. Underneath the counter, the store lockbox contains 35 gp, 816 sp, 12 cp, and a hexing doll.

The DC on the chest was 40, which is really high for a box of tea in my opinion.

2: Storage

While technically a loading dock, this wide hallway is also used as a ready storage space for shop supplies, including spare kettles and cups and barrels of loose tea and dried herbs. The double door to the east are locked.

Icabhod – Disable Device, heroism: 1d20 + 15 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 15 + 2 = 35

Icabhod can easily unlock the double doors.

3: Warehouse

Shelves line the walls in the large, dusty space. After the sisters murdered the shop owner, they discovered the room provided ample space for their nightmare, Shadowlass, to live unseen, and so it has mostly become a smoke‑choked stable. Soot from the supernatural horse’s flames coats every surface and stains the clothes and hair of anyone who enters.

Searching the warehouse takes 6 hours thanks to the mess created by Shadowlass’s soot, and many of the items here are average items fashioned to appear precious. (Which means the majority of your spells wear off).

Icabhod – Appraise: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25

Icabhod identities the valuables in the mess: six champagne flutes carved from smoky quartz (100 gp each), three golden bowls etched with falcon iconography (300 gp each), a rose gold censer lined with a tarry residue of lavender oil (400 gp), an oil painting of the late Grand Prince Stavian II (1,500 gp), a music box carved from darkwood and wound with a permanent prestidigitation spell (3,000 gp), and waters of transfiguration.

4: Apartment

As you approach the door at the end of the hall, a stray cat strolls out from the unlocked room. You recall your agents reported a trap in the area that had transformed them into mice. (I’ll give a +10 bonus to spot the trap since you know to look for it.)

Tychus – Perception: 1d20 + 22 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 22 + 10 = 34
Icabhod – Disable Device: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (19) + 15 = 34

Tychus points out the trap’s location and Icabhod safely disarms it.

Inside, you see a cozy two‑room apartment that once housed the shopkeep. The Sister of Indulgent Dreams used it to hide their secrets and research. The outer room serves as a living room, office, and small kitchen.

There is also a dose of flying ointment, and an orb of heaven wrapped in three layers of black sackcloth on a shelf, alongside various half‑burned candles, cracked animal bones, and feathers.

Also on the bookshelf here are meticulous ledgers maintained by the Sisters of Indulgent Dreams on behalf of Milon Jeroth. The rakshasa used the night hags and their magic to deliver instructions and payments to Maxillar Pythareus’s various false‑flag operations attacking Taldan targets and framing Qadira. The ledgers on their own aren’t enough to damn Pythareus—given their dubious origin—but provide another strong piece of evidence of his wrongdoings.

5. Bedroom

The bedroom reeks of decay and incense. In the far corner from the door lies a humanoid figure wrapped in sheets—the desiccated body of the former owner Eudocia, dried by the desert heat. A desk near the door includes writing implements and stationary, as well as a massive tome bound in leather.

The tome is written in a curious combination of Abyssal and Infernal (not a problem for Xallis to read), and illustrated with terrifyingly vivid drawings of both great heroics and atrocities.

Xallis recognizes that the book contains extensive research on Taldor’s history and a collection of stories—both true and larger‑than‑life legends—surrounding various former kings. The book’s curious style seems intended to serve as a focus for some kind of ritual, though no magic remains in it now.

You recognize many of the kings from the celebrations back in Oppara, what must seem like ages ago.

Historical Figures

And with that, the Tea Shop has been cleared.

Xallis is awoken with a gasp. Having spent so much time in the backlines, safe behind allies and conjured beings, had softens the summoner to the sensation of being so grievously wounded.

Later, when reviewing the items, he frowns at the staff of authority. "I'm of a mixed mind. That definition of 'authority' reminds me of the stories I heard about my homeland. And we've seen that we don't need to rely on magic when a properly crafted blade will work."

"I'm more curious about the book and its rituals. I'd like to study it when we have a few days. Preferably with lots of bedrest... I feel as though that hag poisoned me. At least, I think so. Diseases usually don't work that fast."

Xallis wrote:

It was a disease. Not poison. You are correct that most don’t work that fast, but a few magical diseases like this one do have an onset of immediately.

Abadius 14, 4718 (Moonday) (Zimar, Taldor)

You are fairly confident that you have enough information on Maxillar Pythareus’ deeds that Kathann Zalar should sanction your assault on Abadar’s Pillar, but first, you decide you have one more loose end to time up.

Two days later, after healing and restoring Xallis’s health, you return to the Waterhill Manor with the intention of wiping out the remaining rakshasa.

You recall that there are three types of rakshasa in the manor:
Chandar, the hyena-headed rakshasa, is a common rakshasa.
Oaca, the small gnomish rakshasa, is a dandasuka rakshasa.
And the two snake-armed rakshasa, who you never learned their names, are marai rakshasa.
You know that for all three types you need a weapon that is both good and piercing to overcome their DR. And they all also have high SR.

When Henrika asks Oaca to prepare the interrogation room, Oaca replies, ”Funny you should mention that. It’s currently occupied. We know you assigned us to assassinate Baron Astor Roderus, but we ended up bringing him back here. We thought you might want to do the honors of delivering the killing blow. Roderus is a spellcaster, so he’s been gagged and I bit off all of his fingers. You’ll be able to take your time with him just the way you like to.”

Oaca opens the integration room door and as he says, the baron is tied to the chair. The baron is a muscular man with a well-trimmed beard and a bald head. Although in his tortured state, he looks weak and pitiful. He groans and squints against the light from the hallway.

The enemies are in their current position on the map.

Waterhill Manor Map

If you want to attack Oaca now, you can take a surprise round action. Or if you’d rather try to isolate Oaca further, you can do or say whatever you want to try.

I'm inclined to take our shot right away, since my proposed plan was to get Oaca alone and then kill him. I imagine we will have the same spells cast before we enter the manor as we did before we entered the tea shop, if that's all right with everyone? Henrika has the holy short spear ready, and since they have been in the room before they know that they cannot all fit inside, so Henrika would suggest that just herself, Icabhod, and Trevor enter, leaving Tychus and Xallis to guard outside, in case the other rakshasa hear and come to investigate. While Oaca is busy opening the door, she silently casts Hermean potential again, now that her disguise has been established.

Henrika walks with Oaca as he describes what he has done. She raises an eyebrow, fixing him with her hypnotic stare. "Show me," she says imperiously, gesturing for him to enter first. She follows, closing the door after her allies, and then approaches Oaca next to the captive. She peers at the baron, silently shakes her head, and stabs suddenly at the dandasuka rakshasa.

Xallis sheaths his unsullied dagger. Thankfully, that had gone quicker than he expected.

He identifies the unlabeled items, if any, before considering the loadout. "What an odd collection of items. Arcane scrolls and a wand, along with heavy armor? What a unique set of items... and is that mithral? A full suit of that is worth a small fortune on its own, never mind the magic put into it. I'm genuinely impressed, though not surprised."

Then he considers their mission. "Should I bring out Navia? Perhaps make her invisible, and have her wait on the roof and cover the exists. In case one of our foes attempts to escape during out next 'discipline' session."

Hanrika stands in thought a moment, watching Baron Astor. "Very well," she whispers. "Let us leave him here for now, and come back for him before we depart. I will take the keys, and I would also like to wear the cloak (to improve my fortitude) and the magic ring (to increase my defense). It is unlikely that we will be able to take all of these creatures by surprise, after all, so I think I am the most likely to inspire counter-attacks in the upcoming battles." To Xallis, she responds "That would be a valuable contingency, having Navia ready to chase down those that try to flee."

You decide to leave the baron where he is for the moment. Xallis summons Navia and cloaks her in invisibility before sending her outside. Navia:Mage Armor (11 hr), ▲Invisibility (11 min)

Burn:
A creature affected by the burn ability must also succeed at a DC 19 Fortitude save or catch fire, taking 1d4 fire damage at the start of its turn. A creature suffering from this effect can attempt a new DC 19 Reflex save as a full-round action. Dropping and rolling on the ground grants a +4 bonus on this save. Creatures that hit a burning creature with natural weapons or unarmed attacks take fire damage as though hit by the burning creature and must succeed at a Reflex save to avoid catching on fire.

Prone:
The character is lying on the ground. A prone attacker has a –4 penalty on melee attack rolls and cannot use a ranged weapon (except for a crossbow). A prone defender gains a +4 bonus to Armor Class against ranged attacks, but takes a –4 penalty to AC against melee attacks. Standing up is a move-equivalent action that provokes an attack of opportunity.

I’m having Chandar delay initiative 1 point so everyone can act together to simplify things.

Everyone can go again.

Round 2

Xallis tries and fails to put out his ignited clothing.

Xallis takes 4 more fire damage.

Tychus returns fire at the remaining marai and explodes his head splattering gore against the large bay window behind it.

Tychus can kill Marai (Yellow) with his first two shots. The critical hit is confirmed and he does 94 damage. He can save his other arrows.

Since the marai died before Henrika’s turn, if she wants to change where she moves, she can.

Chandar comes down the stairs and hears Milon shouting that they are under attack. The first person she sees is Xallis who is on fire and her eyes go wide. She turns and continues running towards the baths. ”Under attack?! By who? Quick! Douse yourself in the water.”

Chandar just double moves.

"I don't know, she just... she just came out nowhere, and one of the marai are dead, and..." Xallis does his best to sound afraid. Then again, the sounds of combat and his burning robes will do more than words. "...it's some kind of monster!"

When he reaches the pool, he pauses to concentrate, yanking the intangible chord to pull the invisible Navia to his side. An order briefly flashes in her mind.

"Navia, kill this one. But take a swipe at me as well. Trust me!"

Round 2

Henrika takes the opportunity presented by the fall of their enemy to stand and move closer to where she thinks the other rakshasa will emerge, rushing down the corridor as she shouts that they are under attack.

Round 3

Watching Xallis play out his gambit against the rakshasa, Henrika moves closer to her fight with the "monster". "Kill it! Kill it!" she screams, attempting to match an authentic note of panic. She transfers her hypnotic stare to her new adversary, and when she reaches the other side of the rakshasa, she lunges at it with her shortspear.
