(#1-10) "Tarnbreaker's Trail" (Inactive)

Game Master rainzax

Synopsis:

Venture-Captain Bjersig Torrsen has set out the call for a group of Pathfinders to compete in a race known as the Balgirdtrek. Taking place in the Land of the Linnorm Kings, this race is an annual event that includes participants from both the Varki and Ulfen people of the region. Bjersig hopes that by having the PCs participate, they might not only bolster the Society's reputation in the Saga Lands, but also document this exciting event. Although the Society has the organizers' official permission, some of the Ulfen competitors in particular see the Pathfinders' participation as an intrusion on their time-honored pastime. The true challenge of this race is not monsters or villains, but the harsh nature of the grueling marathon itself.

Ezaki (History Lesson):

"We shall see if he is a true Ulfen - there is yet tomorrow's test!" Oluf gives Ezaki the historical background of the coming River Crossing challenge "It is said that after spotting the tarn linnorm, Balgird gave chase to the beast. The linnorm slipped through the trees and made its way across the Whitegold River to evade Balgird. The rushing river was frigid and cold, and as Balgird approached he could see the tarn linnorm lurking in the trees on the other side, waiting to pluck his exhausted body from the shore if he swam across. Balgird felled a tall sapling from the riverside and vaulted across the river with as much of his gear as he could carry, foiling the linnorm and chasing it further into the wild!"

He adds "I will call him an honorary Ulfen if he makes that challenge!"

After hearing the story, your "rival" shares some specific strategies for overcoming this (later) challenge with you...

Ezaki, these "strategies" will grant you a +1 circumstance bonus to that challenge's skill checks if and when you get there! Unlike other "tips", if you relay this information to your party, they can benefit from the bonus as well!

Furthermore, I would appreciate if you share this story with the party when you arrive at that challenge! (optional)

Domain passion
Cast Single Action somatic
Range touch; Targets 1 creature that could find you attractive
Saving Throw Will; Duration 10 minutes
You infuse your target with attraction, causing it to act friendlier toward you. The target attempts a Will save. It gains a +4 circumstance bonus to this save if you or your allies recently threatened or were hostile to it.

Critical Success The target is unaffected and aware you tried to charm it.
Success The target is unaffected but thinks your spell was something harmless instead of charming touch, unless it identifies the spell (see Identifying Spells).
Failure The target's attitude becomes friendly toward you. If it was friendly, it becomes helpful. It can't use hostile actions against you.
Critical Failure The target is helpful and can't use hostile actions against you.

You can Dismiss the spell. If you use hostile actions against the target, the spell ends. After the spell ends, the target doesn't necessarily realize it was charmed unless its friendship with you or the actions you convinced it to take clash with its expectations, which could potentially allow you to convince the target to continue being your friend via mundane means.

Word of Mouth (Part Three)

The surge in popularity has it's benefits and drawbacks. Primarily, that it takes Brünwulf and his Infernal Hellfyres (as they have now come to be called) some time to reconvene as a team. What with the "Balgird-like" outsider himself becoming distracted with something over the way, Atae chasing down a lurker, and both Zelphari and Ezaki being warmed up to by opposing teams!

Players are encouraged to share their experiences here

But eventually everyone settles in for the night, leading into the third day of the race.

Ezaki is pushing the sled out of a particularly nasty ditch when he hears a voice.

Boy, why are you doing all the grunt work?

Ezaki pauses. "Yes," he thinks to himself. "Why am I doing all the grunt work?" He looks at Brunwulf, sitting pretty in the cargo basket. "I don't deserve to be muddy. I'm too good to be muddy."

Do you have some wine? Throw it in Brunwulf's face.

Ezaki digs through his belongings and finds a wineskin. Uncorking it, he starts to sneak towards Brunwulf, but just at that moment, Zelphari steps in and begins pushing.

Instantly forgetting his one-sided feud with Brunwulf, Ezaki returns with heroic resolve and pushes!

Brünwulf gets an uneasy feeling that the group may be headed off course. He hops out of the sled to scout around, but as soon as he does, the sled sinks further into the knee deep snow covering a patch of mud. Wisps of steam issue from the ground where the mud has been exposed. As the group starts to push on the sled, he sees Ezaki, an opened wineskin in hand, heading towards Zelphari. Brünwulf grabs the wineskin from Ezaki.
Gimme a swig of that. I'm parched.
He takes a big swig and stares at the sled mired in the mud.
Humph. he scowls, handing the wineskin back.
We must be on top of an underground hot spring. Look.
He points at the steam.
Stepping a few paces out of the dip to higher ground behind the sled, he kneels where it plowed away some of the mud and snow and traces a finger along small cracks in the bedrock.
Let's get this thing going. The ground could collapse underneath us at any moment. I'll head to the front of the line and pull the dogs' gangline.
He hustles past the line of dogs and grabs hold of the two front tuglines that attach to the gangline.
Tell me when you push and I'll pull!!!
He shouts over the blowing wind and the barking of the anxious dogs.

Balgirdtrek (Third Leg of Race, Modified)

The party manages to dig the sled out of the heated mud, and rather than losing significant time, manage to actually jump a single position in the race. Not to be outdone (and perhaps privy to the murmurings about Brünwulf the night before!) the story of the day is how Faergim Axebinder urged her Wyrding Wayfinders to absolutely surge from last place to first place, leaving the party in her wake of snow - with Sassa Ringbreaker waving as they speed by! - passing up Without Trace or Fail who had been steadily clinging to second place!

Balgirdtrek (Third Trial: River Crossing)

Steam and spray from the Whitegold River hangs in the air as the checkpoint draws near. The wet air carries a cold sting. The snow on the trees drips, plopping heavily to the ground and the snow and frost seem to be clinging only in shadowed nooks and slick patches, despite the frigid air. Race officials prepare fish caught from the banks of the river near the camp. South of the campsite, another official stands near the riverbank. Several long poles lean against a mossy rock. Across the river, the course stretches away from the river and through the thinning trees into the snow-dusted hills beyond. The party catches glimpse of 1d4 ⇒ 2 Ostog Oakfeller of Without Trace or Fail pole-vaulting across the Whitegold River - the last of his team to cross. They share a moment of prayer together in a circle, but not before Hjeldr shoots Atae a glance...

Ezaki - would you regale us with the History behind this Challenge?

......As you head deeper into the camp, you are allowed a brief trip to the Rest Area before having to report to the Challenge Area, and there see 1d4 ⇒ 1 people from the winning team Wyrding Wayfinders talking, snacking, drinking, changing clothes...

...After a brief rest, the party heads over for "their turn" participating in this challenge. A collection of 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 2) = 8 poles with pointed ends lie ready for each of you to grasp. The official asks "Who would like to cross first?"

The Difficulty of "Pole-vaulting" looks to be DC 15 using Athletics or Acrobatics - there is no consequence for Failure but there is for Critical Failure - meaning this skill challenge is repeatable.

We really need to have a chat with those Wyrding Wayfinder guys. How were they able to fly past us so fast and get into first place? I wonder if they're hiding an air elemental under their sled that's giving them a boost of speed.

Huh. Cool story. A linnorm. Brünwulf utters with interest as he watches the pole vaulter.
I've seen farmers pole vault across the channels in their fields. Outside of Sauerton, I think. They had windmills there, too. Charming little village.
He walks over and picks up a pole, then gives it a shake to test its flex.
Why the point on the end? Wouldn't that just make it sink into the ground further? Am I supposed to vault with the blunt end forward?
He looks at the person officiating the contest.
Got any tips on how we're supposed to do this?

More like YOLT!

After a practice run, Ezaki learns quickly and vaults over the Whitegold River with ease.

Seeing that Brunwulf is having some neck issues, she reaches out her hand and gently begins to massage his neck and his shoulders There, is that better? she winks.

She considers what he says Yes, I think I could like that. Sleeping with the bare necessities can become so cold. We can warm each other in food and companionship reaching out her hand to him.

Oooh. Aaaah. Yeahhh. Much better.
Brünwulf's eyes roll back into his head as he relaxes his shoulders from the woman's strong massage.
He turns around and gentlemanly takes Atae's hand to lead her, somewhat aimlessly, towards her tent. As they pass the mess tent, Brünwulf nonchalantly grabs the pot of stew off the tripod over the fire. The cook shakes a wooden spoon in defiance, but, Brünwulf pays no mind. They then pass by two members of Without Trace or Fail enjoying a bottle of mead. Not even giving a glance at the two, Brünwulf snatches up their cups and the bottle of mead, his eyes still on Atae, and leads the woman towards her tent.
They then pass random: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Sigurd of the Bluetongue Brawlers who is chopping logs for firewood. Brünwulf hands the two cups to Atae and then scoops up an armload of firewood as they continue on their way.
The bewildered Sigurd looks up, then gives a knowing smile and a thumbs up to Brünwulf.

Beast Sighting! (Prelude)

As our heroes prepare to settle in for the night, at least two of them will be sharing the warmth of a single pup tent as a means of driving off the cold. With the trees by the Whitegold eerily quiet, Sigurd chops wood nearby, but turns to look amid the trees suddenly...

...Signs of a Beast lurk nearby!...

...And the party catches a glimpse of a Giant Bear which then dashes back into the woods from the opposite bank of the River...

Everyone has succeeded at a Perception check to spot the Beast - players trained in Nature may also roll to Recall Knowledge!

Recall Knowledge (Nature, Trained) @ DC 18:

You identify the Beast as a Large-sized "Short-Faced" Bear!

And can ask One Question about it (or two if Critical Success)!

"Did yew see That!" Sigurd says, hatchet sticking out of a chunk of wood "No use in chasing it - we're on it's terrain after all!" and goes back to chopping!

The Calistrian enjoys the massage that she gave to Brunwulf. As he approaches the cook for the stew, she asks for a container of olive oil, and as she receives it, she adds a bit of herbage that she has in her pouches to make it smell nice.

After their dinner, she slowly begins to disrobe him and as he stands in nature's glory, she invites him onto the sleeping bag, where she uses the scented oil to massage the the rest of him before their nocturnal activities take place.

That's one hell of a bear.
Brünwulf says in astonishment at the great size of the beast.
Nature: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

Hmm. A short-faced bear.
What are it's special attacks?
I don't think we should go after it. It did run off. If it does wander into camp looking for trouble, then we should take care of it. Hopefully not kill such a magnificent beast, though. Like Sigurd said, this is its home, not ours.

Those bears are pretty vicious. Back in my youth, me and a couple friends went on a hunting trip in northern Varisia. A short-faced bear came out of nowhere -they can charge incredibly fast- and grabbed my friend. The beast's claws tore him up real good and then it hurled the poor guy over a dozen feet away into the trunk of a tree. His entrails became his out-trails, I tell you what. It took us a while to bring the beast down with our arrows. Luckily, one of our guys was an aspiring healer and was able to help him before we got him to the nearest town.
