Wounds healed, you proceed with your investigation.

When you reach the next east-west corridor you see a stone door to your left. It is emblazoned with a seven-pointed star, and bears a complicated lock.

Djahan sends his phantom through the door. It returns. "A bottomless chasm! Nothing is to be gained by attempting descent!"
Also - beyond the scope of this adventure ;)

The seven-pointed star is a sihedron rune, a symbol of the seven Thsssilonian schools of magic and of the goddess of runes Lissala.

The Waking Rune

Moving on down the corridor to the east you reach another door. The phantom passes through, and returns to report: "A great pit lies beyond, but there is a walkway around it and another door on the other side!"

You check the door, and find that it opens easily.

A thirty-foot-diameter pit fills this circular room, its bottom lost in darkness. The ceiling arches twenty feet above the pit, which is encircled by a narrow, five-foot-wide walkway. A door stands in the opposite wall of the room, across the pit.

There are no magic auras in this room.

Onye's keen nose detects the scent of decay rising up from the pit.

"Maybe the church should look into sealing up some of these pits. It might help alleviate the, uh, pest problem that this section seems to be having..."

He nods at the catfolk as the group continues on, giving a bit of a shudder as they come to the room with the giant chasm. Heights have never really sat too well with him; massive, bottomless holes under the earth definitely fit that bill too.

"With the smell coming up out of there, I shudder to think what might lie at the bottom. Given what we've seen so far, if it is something dead, it may be restless."

As if in answer to Felix, a serpentine skeleton emerges from the pit. It sways rhythmically and fixes you with its eyeless gaze. Its head appears to be the skull of a human!

You face a necrophidius. Contrary to appearances this is not an undead, but a construct. A necrophidius is a mindless, implacable killer.

The necrophidius is particularly feared for its Dance of Death - a hypnotic movement that dazes its victims. As if that weren't bad enough, its bite causes paralysis.

"Ooooh no, why does this thing exist??" Tsamara cringes as a skeletal thing emerges from the pit. She conjures another small blessing of sunlight before falling back a pace; the narrow ledge is no place to fight.

"Might be safer to try and draw it out; back into the hall maybe? I don't fancy fighting next to such a long drop, personally!"

The serpentine creature crawls around the walkway, rises up like a venomous snake about to bite, and sways hypnotically from side to side captivating you with its rhythm.

Everyone except the phantom attempt a DC15 Will save vs a mind-affecting effect. (I'm ruling the phantom immune whilst incorporeal, since this is not a magical attack form.)

The phantom wails uselessly, complaining again that it can't hurt anything whilst insubstantial.

Most of the menagerie (and their 'keeper') are held entranced by the swaying, skeletal serpent. Only Demm and the machine-minded Data resist. Both attack - missiles of steel and force damaging the monster, but not destroying it.

The snake-skeleton seeks living prey! It skitters past the phantom to bite Onye - but the cat-warrior's armour protects him.

You search the chamber, but find nothing. The phantom passes through the next door and returns to report another long corridor ahead. You open the door and proceed.

You approach a charnel house of blood, bones, and scraps of rotten flesh. Strange runes have been sloppily drawn on the walls using some dark brown pigment. A moss-covered stone monolith stands in the centre of the room, wreathed in gossamer wisps of grey mist that seem to congeal around the crumbling stone.

Knowledge (arcana) DC20:
The runes are the ancient Thassilonian runes for Gluttony and necromancy.

Two monstrous creatures, more beast than human, crouch amongst the decay. The hairless, boil-covered creatures have distended jaws and long claws. They pause in their struggle over a femur, turning their attentions towards you...

Knowledge (religion) DC11:
These foul creatures are festrogs, also known as 'dog-ghouls' for their habit of running on all fours. They are undead that feed on the dead but prefer living mortal flesh.

Festrogs will feed immediately they bite a living opponent, gaining sustenance from doing so. They charge into a fight to trip opponents with their bite, like a dog or wolf does. The boils on their bodies erupt if struck, spraying their attacker with pus that causes a rotting infection.
