The Waking Rune

In Kalsgard, just as in Frostbreach, Gorum-worship is the dominant religion. The city boasts many large temples to the god of war. It is to one of those, in the Fire Quarter, that you bring Lucifer's remains.

The temple guards are wary, but they do not tell jokes or hurl insults at the bearers of a warrior who fell in battle. Rather, they treat you with reverence and respect.

Requests for raising from the dead are exceptionally rare in Kalsgard, and elsewhere in the Land of the Linnorm Kings, for to die in battle is considered a noble death and more desirable than to pass in one's sleep of old age. The high priest Olaf Ironheart begins to question you, but sees the determination in your hearts (and the gold in your purses).

In a chapel to the Lord in Iron, surrounded by weapons and armour, the high priest bids Gorum send Lucifer back from the Boneyard. And Lucifer returns.

It takes a few days rest for Luci to properly recover most of his strength, despite Grunjar's earnest assistance in the healing of his body. In that time you are able to pick up a few more supplies, ready to face the headless king and his, soon to be yours, linnorm. Lucifer purchases another restoration scroll, in order to be back to full fitness for the fight...

And we'll return to the catacomb tomorrow. Please post any additional purchases that you make in the sojourn in Kalsgard.

Oh, thank goodness. He's awake.
Inga says in relief.
As the priests leave the room, she gratefully thanks them and gives a nod in greeting to the nurse staying behind at Lucifer's side.
Inga leans in close to speak softly to the wayang with a tender smile.
There is no need for you to repay us. I was worried you weren't going to want to come back. Many souls find that there are better things waiting for them beyond this life.
Inga gently brushes aside a few wisps of Lucifer's hair from his forehead and lightly pats it with a cool, wet cloth from the wash basin at the bedside.
I am so happy you came back.
She reluctantly stands, but knows Lucifer needs some sleep and more time to heal.
We'll leave you to get your rest and then depart for Frostbreach in the morning when you're feeling better. We have some preparations to make before we head back to face the dangers in those catacombs... I hope you're still up for it, Luci.
She says with a grin.

Her grin fades and she looks away momentarily, distracted by a voice in her head. She then looks back at Lucifer as a tear swells in her eye.
Klaus is happy you came back, too.

Good to have you back...too bad we had to sell your gear to do it. Only got about 50 gold for it all...but better than nothing, right? Rallas says as he tries to hide a smile. He relents and hands the wayang his gear.Couldn't hold a straight face...rest up...we still have a lot to do... he says as he lets Lucifer get some rest.

That was a bit close...first time I've had a teammate die...not something I want to see happen again if I can help it. I think I need a drink...or ten...


The Waking Rune

A week later, having encountered Olisarra the Huldra again, you reach the hidden catacomb. In your third meeting with Olisarra she is most serious. "You came back. I admit I had doubts. I saw grim portents: a black wolf in the clouds, a burning tree in the midst of a snowstorm. Hurry now! Return!"

You gather outside the catacomb entrance, and prepare for the expected confrontation with the Headless King.

Ryuunosuke was happy that there was another blade to help dispatch the dragon as they made their way back to deal with it. Talking to the wayang, he compared notes on death as the yojimbo had first hand experience on the matter.

With the group getting prepared for battle, he pulled out a scroll and caused himself and his equipment to grow larger. As they made their way in, he started to give battle tactics and inspired the group towards a glorious battle.

When we get ready to kick things off, Move action to start Inspiring Command (Sound the charge, +1 competence bonus to attack/damage/+5" when you charge, free action to maintain) Standard to use Tactician (Precise Strike) to everyone (+1d6 damage when flanking for 3 rounds)

Before entering the catacombs, Inga takes a minute to perform her ritual to manifest Klaus. The group makes their way towards the chamber where they fought the headless king. Inga expends two charges from her wand of protection from evil. Before descending the natural cavern steps into the chamber, Inga gives Klaus the benefit of her shield spell. She then arms herself with her crossbow.
We're ready whenever you are.
She says quietly to her companions.
She then looks at Lucifer with a concerned expression.
Now, you be careful this time. No more getting cut in half. Okay?

If nobody else has a light source, Inga will do her yellow circle thing (wayfinder) again.

Hmm. Let's see how this goes.
Inga steps through the group and into the chamber while reaching into her haversack. She calls forth her scroll of spiritual weapon. Unfurling it, she reads the magical writing, casting it on the headless king.
A shimmering warhammer made of force appears and swings at the undead menace.
Spiritual Weapon: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
Bludgeon: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Move, draw scroll as part of movement (free action), cast spell.

A scroll is not a weapon or weapon-like object, and cannot be drawn for free as part of regular movement. However, if Spiritual Weapon is what you planned to start with you may begin with the scroll in hand :)

Inga boldly strides forwards, scroll in hand, and unleashes its magic. The conjured weapon strikes the Headless King.

"Why? Why do you torment me, dragon?" the King's unearthly, rasping voice begs. He advances, and as before he summons a mist about himself.

She furrows her brow and purses her lips as she focuses her power to dispel the fog.

With the fog cleared (assuming), she watches the spiritual warhammer attempt to give the headless king a good whack.

I messed up earlier. I think spiritual weapon from a scroll (making it CL 3) only does 1d8+1 damage, not 1d8+2 which I did earlier. So, the king has a hp back. Also, Inga's BAB is +6/+1. Does the spiritual weapon get 2 attacks? If so, here's the second attack:

Whack!: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

dispel magic (std action), spiritual weapon attacks on its own, move behind rallas (move action).

Please also roll another d20 for the second attack of your spiritual weapon - which is even better than you thought: it always deals force damage, no matter the shape of the weapon. ;-)

The Waking Rune

I'll assume everyone who posted after Inga's last post was waiting for her dispel and will adjust initiative order accordingly (except Grunjar who had already indicated his intention to grant Inga a Bit of Luck).

Klaus stalks forwards...

...as does Rallas, curved blade held high.

Lucifer snaps a shot of his crossbow off, aiming for the centre of the fog. The bolt sails under Ryu's giant legs, and hits something solid!

The rest of the group waits a moment for Inga, blessed by Grunjar, to try to dispel the mist - which she does, her magic proving stronger than the King's. Her target in the open again, the conjured hammer of force strikes. You do get the additional attack, but not on the first round and not if you also move the weapon; it seems like a scroll casting must use your BAB as you are the attacker.

The spiritual weapon has struck successfully one on round 1, twice on round 2

Giant Ryu uses the King's own axe against him! A hit

Myth finds the King an easy target without his armour, and two arrows land with crunching impacts.

With a rasping groan, the Headless King steps forwards to do battle with Ryu...

slam vs Ryu: 1d20 + 17 - 3 ⇒ (14) + 17 - 3 = 28damage: 1d10 + 10 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 10 + 9 = 20

...the King's attack rocks Ryu and saps his energy. Still dangerous, but nowhere near as bad as with that axe.

We should let Ryu make a 5 foot step back from where he can still full attack (with a natural reach of 10 ft). Afterwards Rallas (please delay after Ryu) can 5-foot-step forward and hit hard with a bit of luck. Also, Klaus should be able to charge after Ryu moved!

Rallas, I moved you 5 ft down. But I still think you should instead move diagonally down-left (in front of Ryu) after (=delay) our big guy attacked and stepped back. That way Inga can also shoot at the king without you giving him soft cover.
Also, without his armor the king is way easier to hit. I think you actually hit him both times as Ingas spiritual weapon hit with 16. ;-)

The Waking Rune

In an impressive display of coordination the pathfinders surround the Headless King.

Myth launches another brace of blunt arrows. One finds its mark though the other skitters off the wall.

Klaus goes through the cavern wall and delivers a mighty blow with his claws, just as Ryu brings the enormous axe down - though the yojimbo fails to connect with his backswing. But Rallas has been set up for a flank, and with a flourish of his elven blade he cuts the King's legs from under him, then finishes with a downward thrust.

The battle is over.

The Waking Rune

You hear the sounds of battle - Kolvi, locked in combat with the linnorm spirit. You follow the sounds as soon as Ryu's wounds mend.

"You returned" says Kolvi. "Let us bring this cycle to an end."

Kolvi looks at the spectral dragon. As the serpent comes in for another attack she lowers her guard. The linnorm's claw knocks Kolvi to the ground, and with a triumphant roar the creature rushes past you, heading for the surface.

Kolvi rises to her feet. "The spirit goes to reclaim its flesh. You must pursue it and destroy it before it regains its full strength. Take my cold iron axe" she says, and as she lays it on the ground it becomes solid. "My ring will protect the wearer from the linnorm's fiery breath." Kolvi removes a ring and it too becomes solid. "And my boots will allow you travel over ice and snow as easily as you would tread any road." She gifts you her boots, and these too become solid.

"Go. There is no time to lose!" Kolvi fades away.

I have a cold iron blade...and my boots will let me get close to the beast. And I think I can dodge the breath weapon of it. maybe Ryu get the ring, Myth the boots and Klaus the axe? just thinking out loud...

Myth, use my wand and make your bow more lethal.also, do we have to re up out short buffs?

Grunjar immediately casts expeditious retreat on himself. This will allow him to keep up with the party while casting buff spells. (I will post the list of buffs later today.

All of Grunjar's buffs have a duration of 6 minutes (or longer) which should be more than enough to cover the way back out of the cave (where the linnorm bones are/were) and the combat itself.

Unfortunately, I still do not know if the linnorm is evil which I kind of need to know for align weapon. Ideas, anyone?

@Rallas:
I think one minute will have easily passed when we will reach the linnorm.
You should start casting the 1 minute buffs near the entrance.
Ryu should cast lead blades on the way, and enlarge person directly before leaving the cave to make the most of the 10 rounds it lasts.

While the group is divvying up magic items, Inga casts resist energy (fire, 20 pts., 90 mins) on Ryu, Rallas, and Klaus.

She then uses a wand of mage armor (+4 AC, 1hr), a fly (9 mins) spell, and magic fang (+1 atk & dmg, 9 mins) spell on Klaus.

Just before reaching the exit of the catacombs, she casts shield (+4 shield, 10 rnds) from her wand on Klaus & Inga.

When Ryu gives the call to charge into battle as he runs out of the caverns into the open, Inga casts Haste (9 rnds) on everyone.

Lucifer, stay close. When battle starts, I can cast greater invisibility from my wand on you.
Greater Invisibility is a 4th level spell. How many rounds does it last if cast from a wand?

Knowing that you face a formidable foe, you prepare with all of your magic and step outside the catacomb. The sky has darkened, filled with gloomy clouds. The stone sides of the hill bleed with magma where the bones of the ancient linnorm once lay. There, not far away from the cave entrance, the great serpent lies.

The monster is incomplete - just as Kolvi said, it has not fully reformed. Yet it plainly lives, even though it is missing parts of its flesh. The beast roars and turns to face you. Above, high amongst the clouds, a female ulfen warrior stands against a colossal dragon...
