"Those are guardian spirits," Chulyin informs Salliss. "They are called kodama. I met one along the Spirit Road while working in Minkai. Now, I would like to try to observe the flows of magical energy as someone places the sapling."
He pulls out his writing set in order to make swift notations.

"Watch out for immoral kitsune and dangerous oni when you visit," Chulyin cautions. "Kodama and nature spirits are not the only things that stalk those woods. We have been fortunate that the worst we have encountered have been malevolent elementals and an ill-tempered dragon in his youth."
...pauses for potential irony.
| GM Doug H |
As Biago scoops the last bit of dirt over the roots, energy spreads from the sapling. Tendrils of green light creep towards the menhirs. The carvings of trees rustle in the stone as the energy passes through.
One of these tendrils also touches a button on Biago's shirt — the item shines with a pleasant green light and feels warm to the touch like it's been sitting in the summer sun on a balmy afternoon.

From the trees bordering the clearing, hundreds of small, vaguely humanoid shapes materialize into existence, each with a featureless stone face and wearing a rope made of braided straw. Interspersed through the branches, peeking from behind trunks, standing among the roots, the blank-faced spirits stare with hollow eyes into the clearing. You know these are Kodama. As forest and tree guardians, it's likely they're curious about the rainbow cedar and what you're are doing here in their forest.
In unison, their heads begin to shake, drowning the silence with a cacophony of eerie chimes and rattles.
You may make an impression on the Kodama by appealing to them, but only one PC can act as a spokesperson. You already know that Kodama are guardians of the forest, and this knowledge might help you make a good appeal to them. You may aid the spokesperson with a DC 18 Diplomacy, Nature, Religion, Society, or Survival check; you may also make a DC 17 Forest Lore / Herbalism Lore check. Everyone gets a +2 circumstance bonus thanks to the blessing of Daikitsu, which you received. The DC of the diplomacy check is 24.
The kodama seem indifferent but curious. It may take more than one attempt to make them really like you.
The obvious art choice on Slide 1.
Suddenly, the noise stops. The spirits are still. Hundreds of large, dark eyes stare at you with intense curiosity, waiting to see what you will do…
Chulyin the Spirit Talker

Chulyin looks around at the multitudes of spirits. He turns to Farzin, assuming from their previous work together that the sorcerer would make the appeal, and says, "If we desire to win their favor, they are fond of..."

You all know these Kodama speak Common, Minkaian, Tien, and Senzar. You should appeal to the kodama by recognizing the importance of the forest, asking for the kodama’s help in protecting this sacred tree, or expressing that the Pathfinders want to protect the island as well.
They watch Farzin and Fen intently. Some of them creep closer; others sit cross-legged in the branches. They begin rattling their stone heads again. The sound of chimes fills the forest…

Farzin smiles at the kodama and steps forward.
”Hello, spirits of the forest,” he gestures broadly, and realizes he’s still holding onto his makeshift pine cone web-slasher.
”We do so love your forest, with all of its trees and nature.” He quickly drops the slasher and dashes it aside with a foot.
”Why me?!” He hisses over his shoulder, but his smile quickly returns as he addresses the kodama again.
”Oh, wise spirits, If you have been watching us for awhile, which you probably have been, then you’ll know that we mean no harm, that we wish to protect this island, and restore its ancient and powerful ley lines. And we ask for your help now, as we plant this beautiful, rainbow sapling here, in this sacred heart of the forest, where it may grow and thrive with your guidance.”
He clears his throat and pushes the pine cone away with his foot again, as he waits, his head bowed.

Another +1 from the assists. Technically they shouldn't;t stack with the circumstance bonus from the shrine but I think the author's intent was that they should.
Three Kodama materialize where the pine cone was and stare down at the empty ground.
Two kodama more materialize in the sapling's branches; the light plays across their faces like rainbow-dappled stone after a rainstorm.
One Kodama appears on Farzin's shoulder (opposite Papayo), and watches him. It rattles in his ear.
It seems they like the sorcerer!
But some of them are getting bored, walking away into the night or walking up tree and out of sight. You need one more check to make them helpful. Looks like I crossposted with Fen; resolving that below.
| GM Doug H |
Hundreds of Kodama form a circle around Fen and watch her. They also form empty rings to the oracle's left, right, and rear. It seems they really like her… and perhaps her ancestors, too.
One Kodama, smaller than the rest, walks up to the sapling places a braided-straw rope around the trunk. The little tree shimmers and all the kodama in the clearing stop rattling. Then, they rattle one time more before vanishing instantly. The forest is silent.
Two coils of braided straw lie in the grass, at the feet of Farzin and Fen. They are sized perfectly to cinch around the waist like humble belts.

Farzin’s smile softens with relief when Fen joins him to speak.

Papayo gives a happy squawk.

You walk through the rest of the forest without incident. At times, you think you see Kodama following you — materializing on high branches, peeking out fom gnarled roots, and watching you from the shadows.
Dusk is beginning to fall when you return to Kayajima fort. Kukuha is there waiting for you at the place of her ritual. She has drawn more complex runes in the dirt. "I can feel it. The ritual is ready!"
The spires and walls of Kayajima Fortress cast long shadows across the expanse as Kukuha dons a ceremonial cap and sash and stands at the center of the clearing, eyes closed. She performs a brief series of gestures with a feather fan before sinking to her knees and thrusting her talons into the earth. In the nearby forest, you can feel the eyes of the Kodama watching. You can feel the dragon guardian's awareness touching the old fort. You see a speck high in the air, soaring like a raptor in the high winds.
A low rumble sounds and the earth shakes. From the northeast, tendrils of golden energy ripple through the air like gusts of wind. From the southeast, waves of azure light flow across the ground, like the ocean crashing against the shore. And from the northwest, lines of verdant energy snake roots through the earth. The energy trails dance toward Kukuha, gathering in larger and more vibrant swaths and forming a dome around her.
Suddenly, a loud droning hum emits from the Dogu statue at the wall. The channels and symbols on the statue glow as they did for the toy dog at the magical kiln. Chulyin, with a sinking feeling, also considers the magical Ley-Line warrior-etchings back in Sakakabe and what the implications here might be. True to his suspicions, the ley-lines activate a powerful warrior-construct.
The creature begins to rise with the sound of grinding stone. When it stands upright, it bathes clearing in cobalt light. Its glowing eyes fix on Kukuha, crackling with power.
Kukuha shouts: "The Dogu's gone berserk! It's broken, pulling too much energy, too imbalanced!" She channels some of her ritual's energy to you, bathing you in a green glow. However, that is all the help she can provide as she continues to focus on her ritual, muttering and waving her fan about in complex patterns. She forms a protective barrier around her own body.

Blit giggles and swings his mallet onto the Dogu's toe… the construct looks down, as if pondering the tiny creature. It slowly wobbles… teeters… and falls over!
Well, that's silly. But the crit takes the Dogu out by 3 HP. We will call the combat there because even if Biago crit fails the fort save you all can get him back up easily with your healing abilities.
The moment of glory is fleeting for the vexgit. The horrible Fey's screams of triumph become terror as the dogu falls onto him.
As you catch a breath, some of you wounded from the explosion of force, you hear giggling from underneath the statue. The heroic Blit climbs out from underneath and smashes his maul against the dogu's corpse again and again and again. It makes an annoying sound like the ringing of a broken bell. The evil the fey continues to relish in the ruin of all made things — including constructs like the Dogu.
A sudden screech bursts from the air above — the mother Griffon plummets down and snatches the vexgit up in her talons. Blit is carried away, screaming.
The griffon deserves an appearance… she helps by gouging out the construct's eyes, which shoot fire rays. But sadly it didn't last long enough or get a justified reason to use them. Also kill-stealing Fey must be punished!
With Blit gone, it's finally quiet but for the murmuring of Kukuha's ritual.
Biago

fort save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
"OW!!!! That HURTS. Just for that, I'm going to... "
As he says that he looks and sees the creature crumble. He ceases to maintain his spell and drops his hands.
"Oh! Is it over? Oh dear, I don't feel that I was much help against this thing. Good thing our friend the dragon showed up! So what do we think? Are these ley lines actually safe?"
Farzin Maaravi

Farzin watches the fey and the griffon fly off into the distance.
"We thank you Blit."
Papayo squawks, "Loud, boss!"
"Yes. well, he'll return to the Fey Realm in a moment. Don't worry about him."
Farzin surveys the crumbled dogu and the damage. He nods in agreement with Biago.
"I too am concerned about these ley lines."

Sallis does what he can to help the various allies, leaving the healing to those better able to do it.
First he quickly checks to see that Kukuha has been able to maintain her ritual.
If everything looks under control with that, he turns his attention to the wreckage of the statue. If there are any Kodama trapped under the wreckage of the statue, he tries to free them. Moving part of the broken head, he says “This statue is a bust.”
Looking over all the destruction, he says “I sort of liked the look of it. Too bad we had to destroy it like that.”
In reply to Biago and Farzin, he says “The ley lines are a magical power source aligned with the elements. How safe they are depends on how they are harnessed.”

Fen looks up with shock as the fey creature is taken away. "It was real?! Have you been summoning real creatures all this time Farzin? I was sure that troll was an illusion..."
Bemused, she sheathes her katana, resolving to have it looked at by the smiths after smashing it against such a hard surface. She comes up behind Saliss and puts a hand on his shoulder.
"It is a shame, though with study we might be able to learn to channel their energies again"
Looking around she can't help but think about her future.
I wonder if Kukuha needs an assistant?

“True, there is the clay dog that can be studied. It would likely give some clues on how to use the ley lines to animate objects.”
