Your trip to Tian begins soon.
This adventure takes place on Kayajima, an island that lies a short voyage off the coast of Sakakabe, a bustling and prosperous seaside town that is the capital of province of the same name in Minkai.
| GM Doug H |
We begin!
Sakakabe bustles on this clear, humid summer morning. The constant buzz of conversation and commerce echoes over the concentric terraces leading up the hillside from the town’s port. Wagons clatter their way across cobbled streets, their wares bound for export on waiting cargo ships. Oyster boats are returning to port from the north, their nets filled with the morning’s catch. The air smells of brine and seaweed. Fishers and merchants alike clatter across the pier, with shouted orders and affirmations traded from vessel to cart. A busy street food vendor fries omelets and puts them on a stick for his customers.
You're in the docks district because you received a letter from Venture-Captain Fola Barun instructing you to meet her protege, one Kukuha Mukai, as well as an old fisherman and ex-pathfinder named Masuhei Okonase. It seems you're to be ferried to a small island just off the coast for a mission involving ley lines.
I hope this letter finds you well. I’ve been working on possibilities on expanding the Pathfinder presence in Minkai, and I believe I have found an excellent location for a brand-new Pathfinder lodge. I have recently learned that a small island just off the coast of Sakakabe Province called Kayajima is potentially located on a favorable convergence of dormant ley lines. We have reason to believe that if we could restore the island’s power, it would be of great use in protecting any lodge we would establish. Not only that, but the island’s diplomatic location in relation to Minkai, Xidao, and the Forest of Spirits would be a great boon to expanding Society presence in the region. I’ve secured approval from Sakakabe’s provincial government for this mission, so you should encounter no difficulties in that regard.
I have spoken to my protege, Kukuha Mukai, and have requested her to meet you in Sakakabe proper to travel to Kayajima to see whether it would be a fitting location for a lodge. She’s somewhat an expert in the field of ley lines, so she’s the perfect person to oversee this endeavor. Kukuha will be your point of contact for this mission.
I’ve chartered a voyage from a former Pathfinder, Masuhei Okonase, who retired from the Pathfinder Society to become an oyster fisher. He still helps out the Society from time to time, and he’s a great asset to have in Sakakabe. He knows the waters around Sakakabe well and will be ready to transport you to Kayajima when you arrive.
Best of luck to you,
— Venture-Captain Fola Barun
As you make your way through the crowded streets, you notice a few fellow Pathfinders — likely your teammates on this mission!
Now is the time for character intros! Please introduce yourself; it might be interesting to note what you look like, anything that stands out about your character, why you might be interested in mystical ley lines, or what you’ve been doing here in Minkai.

A half elf is standing on the docks, surveying the people as they pass. If it weren't for the eyes, you could have easily mistaken him for an elf. He has the angular build, pointed ears and wide eyes of an elf, but the pupils give away his human lineage. His clothes are sturdy and well made. He wears leather armor, has a short bow slung across his back and a rapier at his waist. There is also a wayfinder hanging from a chain around his neck.
Deciding he can't see enough from the street, he quickly clambers up one of the piles supporting the pier and balances there to survey the crowd. Evidently spotting someone, he nimbly jumps down and rolls to his feet.
He approaches a person, asking "Pardon me, but are you one of the people Fola instructed me to meet here? My name is Salliss."

Zhao Fen had been somewhat annoyed to receive the letter from Fola Barun. She thought that she'd made it quite clear to Fola that she was returning to Tien-Xia for some downtime. "Goka", she had said in response to Fola's innocent questioning about her plans, "to visit my family's shrine and see if there is any aid I can provide to the surviving Zhao heirs, then Minkai to honour Shizuru in her homeland".
Now to receive this letter as she was planning her shrine tours for the day, and for it to not even mention her planned vacation, was quite galling. She tried to hide the letter as soon as she'd read it, but the ever-present voice of her ancestors reminded her of her familial debt to the society, and of her duty, and so on, at great length. So she'd sighed, dressed herself in her ornate plate, and set out to meet her contacts.
Fen's somewhat unusual appearance, that of a young Tien-shu warrior in traditional battle dress of ornate jade-green plate mail and accompanying katana, barely draws any attention in Minkai. The tendency of her hair and belonging to move and jostle in defiance of the wind draws many questions in the inner-sea, but here everyone knows the tell-tale signs of one bound to the spirits of their ancestors.
And so with her mind full of resentment, and not a little excitement too, she is surprised by a nimble half-elf jumping down in front of her.
"Oh, why yes I expect I am. I am Zhao Fen."
She bows formally.
"It is an honour to meet you Salliss. Have you seen any others?"
Salliss
|
"Not yet. Would you happen to know what Kukuha Mukai or Masuhei Okonase look like? I am sort of surprised Fola didn't include the name of Okonase's ship." He stumbles a little bit as he tries to figure out which name is proper to use for Masuhei Okonase.
As he is speaking, he continues to scan the surroundings for the other people on the mission.
Farzin Maaravi
|
A gray haired Mwangi woman, bent with age, shuffles along the pier wither her walking stick, her shawl pulled tight. She is checking the various stalls and sampling the wares, mostly seaweeds and jellies. But nothing seems quite what she’s looking for. She is oblivious to all of the hustle and bustle, but the yellow-beaked magpie on her shoulder is ever alert.
”Those cacao nib skin creams I made were quite the sensation last time,” she says.
“One silver!” squawks the magpie.
“Maybe not in terms of income, but they had people talking.” She chuckles at the memory.
Still, nothing so far has been capable of surpassing the cacao nibs in excitement until she happens upon a stall selling unusual lumpy green gourds. Bitter Mellon, the vendor explains. They are so unattractive she has to try one.
”Ah ha!” She exclaims, spitting the bite onto the ground. ”Exactly what I’m looking for! This will make an astringent tonic that can cure anything! Or at least taste like it.”
”Bitter Mellon. Who has ever heard of such a thing?” She is quite pleased with her discovery as she shuffles on, dreaming of the possibilities.
The magpie squawks, ”Zhao Fen!”
”Zhao Fen? Yes, sure, but I was speaking of Avistan. Surely no one in Avistan has thought of such a thing.”
”No, boss, right there. Zhao Fen!”
With a tisk of annoyance, the old woman turns to look, and indeed, spies Zhao Fen chatting with what must be other pathfinder agents. It is then that the old woman remembers the letter from Fola Barun and the reason for traveling to Sakakabe to begin with.
”I guess we weren’t the only ones invited after all.”
She immediately pulls off her shawl and her gray wig along with it. She straightens her posture and tosses her walking stick into a pile of flotsam. She rubs the makeup off her face as she approaches, arms outstretched in greeting.
”Zhao Fen! Sorry to interrupt. How wonderful to see you again! Farzin Maaravi, surely you remember.”
The magpie squawks.
”And of course, my friend and assistant, Papayo. How have you been? Are we all here to help Fola?”
Salliss
|
The half-elf turns towards Farzin as he sees the disguise being discarded. At the mention of Fen’s name, he glances in her direction to check that she recognizes the person.
After Farzin finishes hugging Zhao, he extends his hand to Farzin for a handshake and introduces himself. “Hello, I’m Sallis. Pleased to meet the two of you, Farzin and Papayo.”
Zhao Fen.
|
"I'm afraid I dont" Fen replies uncertainly to Sallis' query. "I wasn't expecting to have to me-"
Although taken by surprise Fen looks genuinely delighted to see Farzin and Papayo again.
"Farzin! I hadn't expected to see you here, a world away from last time. I am here at Fola's request yes"
She crosses her arms and presses her lips together in annoyance as she thinks about the peaceful meditation should could have been undertaking, but it doesn't last, the surprise of seeing an old friend is too welcome.
"In truth I'm not sure why she picked me for this mission. Tsukiyo teaches us to pay attention to the occult forces of the world, but I was never a particularly good student-"
He head flicks to one side and she gives a harsh glare over Farzin's shoulder. After a pause she continues
"As I was saying, I know little of ley lines. I know something of defence, and of taking your time to reflect before committing to a course of action, so I am glad I can perhaps help found a new lodge"
Salliss
|
Smiling, Sallis assures them “I have learned the basic theories behind the various forms of magic. I have no practical experience with ley lines yet. It is my hope that this will provide me an opportunity to gain that experience.”
Biago
|
A halfling walks through the dock area passing by most stalls but stops to look at any kind of jewelry for sale.
"Well, there are some interesting items here. Maybe I can take some of these ideas for the styles here and incorporate them into my own designs." He looks around at the strange surroundings. "I'll be mother is worried sick about where I am. Despite all her adventures, she has never travelled so far!"
He then looks over at some people standing together and hears a raven talking. He smiles and walks in their direction.
The halfling is fairly non-descript, other than carrying some weapons, which isn't all that unusual, really. With brown hair and eyes, he would be easy to overlook in a crowd. Even his clothes seem non-descript, basically a study in brown. He would probably blend in perfectly to mud.
[b]"Hello! I'm Biago. I am sure that I am supposed to meet you all here? Are you looking for Kukuha? If not, perhaps you know of them?"/[b]
Farzin Maaravi
|
"Well met," Farzin says as he shakes Sallis's hand.
Following Zhao Fen's gaze, he turns to look over his shoulder, expecting to see someone there, before he remembers Zhao Fen's particular quirks.
He smiles.
"Normally, I'm invited on these missions for my diplomatic skills. Recently, I was in Numeria for a similar purpose. Quite a bit of trouble there, but my illusions did come in handy once again. Remember the giant tarantula, Papayo?"
"A scary one boss!"
Farzin chuckles to himself as he takes out the letter from Fola.
"Yes, she does mention ley lines here. Who has time to read the details these days? I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. If she thought there was a problem, she would have invited more than the three of us."
As Biago approaches, Farzin's smile dips, and then broadens.
"We meet again, friend! I was just saying, surely four of us are enough for this little ley line business. No problem."
Salliss
|
With a nod of his head, the half elf says “I’m Sallis. We were just discussing how to find Kukuha among other things.”
| GM Doug H |
Ahoy there!
As you discuss the mission, a voice calls out to you — an older man with sun-wrinkled skin. He wears a rusty old Wayfinder on a chain at his waist; his shoulder-strap carries a barbed javelin — it's not really built as a weapon, but as a defense against underwater predators.
Always good to see fellow Pathfinders in these parts. He gestures to Salliss's Wayfinder before putting out a callused hand. Name’s Masuhei Okonase, former Pathfinder agent and current oyster fisher extraordinaire! Good old Fola reached out and asked me to lend a hand, and I’m always happy to help out where I can.
Hmmm. He strokes his grey beard. Foala told me there's be five of you — but I only see four… unless the magpie counts? Art on slide 1.
Salliss

“More effective than a summoning spell!” Salliss jests.
Turning to the captain, Sallis introduces himself and admits he wasn’t told how many to expect.
Chulyin the Spirit Talker
|
A heavily tanned Sarkorian man with dark hair arrives at the docks. If his oddity among the Tian-Min of the Sakakabe streets is not enough to alert you that he is yet another Pathfinder, the engraved wayfinder attached to his belt would give it away. He is dressed in a robe made of thick leather and furs and walks with the superficial aid of carved staff adorned with a snake's head.
"I apologize for my tardiness. A pedestrian ran afoul of a cart and I could not ignore his need for aid," he says as he approaches.
Once near, he bows to the other Pathfinders and then to Masuhei. "I am Chulyin."
Unmissable is the spotted jaguar that trails behind the Sarkorian with apparent boredom and disdain for the humans bustling past him. He has grown quite a bit since Farzin and Fen last saw the predator.
"Fen. Farzin. It is good to see you again," he adds with a smile.
| GM Doug H |
Welcome, Chulyin. And friend. He gives the jaguar a wide berth.
So, Fola tells me that you’re headed out to Kayajima to scout some ground for a new Pathfinder lodge. That’s quite exciting! We don’t get much Pathfinder activity in the area, and I’d love to see the Society have a more permanent presence here. Might even inspire me to pick up the old wayfinder again, ha!
I’m ready to take you to Kayajima on my boat, Auspicious Pearl, when you’re ready. He gestures to an elegantly-curved wasen boat tied to a nearby dock. If you need to pick up anything before we head out, the markets should have whatever you want. Just let me know when you’re ready to set sail, or if you have any questions. I know these lands rather well, I'd say.
Chulyin the Spirit Talker
|
"What is the island like?" he asks. "Small, obviously, but is it a barrier or volcanic island? And is it populated?"
| GM Doug H |
Masuhei ponders for a moment, then answers. "Hmmm. What's it like? Well, I haven't ventured there myself. But from what I learned back in my school days, the island used to host Sakakabe’s military forces. It's not populated now, though. The old fort's abandoned. Wasn't deemed worthy of strategic efforts by provincial leadership and they consolidated forces here on the mainland instead. On top of that, not many people even make their way out there nowadays. No need, what with the mining and fishing industries booming. Perfect place for a nice quiet Pathfinder Lodge, if you ask me. Fola chose well."
"Come to think of it, it was probably was volcanic long ago, being that it has a big old mountain smack dab in the middle. You got climbing gear, right? Of course you do — you're all Pathfinders, and come prepared!"
Farzin Maaravi
|
Farzin holds his smile as Chulyin joins the party, and holds it even more as the big cat lays across his feet.
"And Chulyin makes five," he says, and gives Chulyin a nod in greeting.
"The cat, boss!"
"Yes, I know. That makes six."
"And me!"
"I'm not counting you!" Farzin scowls at the magpie before restoring his smile. "Still, nothing to worry about, I'm sure. It's a diplomatic mission. We're here for diplomacy. There's barely a mention these ley lines."
Farzin returns the letter to his pocket as though the matter is settled, but Papayo ruffles his feathers, not convinced.

Masuhei unwraps a piece of red mochi, and offers it to Papayo. "You're right, little bird. Seven." He winks at Farzin. "These so-called Ley Lines held great power in Minkai’s ancient past, but they must have gone out long ago… if they even existed at all. Hope this trip will be worth your while!”
Salliss
|
When Chulyin and his friend join them, Sallis gives a quick nod of greeting and places his hand on his chest as he says his name.
When the captain mentions being ready to leave Sallis says "My letter from Fola mentioned a Kukuha Mukai. Is she already on the island, or do we need to wait for her?"

“Oh right, you were supposed to meet up with her here. I ferried her out to Kayajima a couple days ago. She decided that she wanted to head out early to spend some time getting familiar with the island’s geography.”
None of you sense any lies about this. It also makes sense that the Venture-Captain might be doing reconnaissance.
Zhao Fen.
|
Fen is enjoying the reunion with Farzin and Chulyin, laughing with Papayo and getting to know Saliss, whom her ancestors have taken a great liking to already. She gives Biago a deep bow and is taken with him too.
When Masuhei mentions climbing gear and being prepared, she looks sheepish.
"Actually I think climbing gear would be a wise purchase for me, I'll be right back, does anyone else want anything?"
She nips into the market and picks up some climbing gear, then jealous of Papayo and still in vacation mode, a few paper-wrapped sets of mochi. By then an apparently preparation-mad ancestor has come to the fore and is emploring her to pick up more items. Between her, the aggressive selling of the vendors and the language barrier, Fen comes back with several feather tokens as well as the climbing kit, which she hides in her belt pouches so as not to seem over-eager.
Huffing and puffing (and stuffing mochi into her mouth), she returns to the group.
"OK I'm ready, sorry about that"
She's bought a climbing kit (5SP), a feather token ladder (3GP), feather token chest (10GP), and a feather token bird (8 GP)
Chulyin the Spirit Talker
|
"I am interested to see if these ley lines still hold power," he adds. "Fola's letter did not make it clear to me how they were once used and why the Society thinks they might be able to be awakened."
"There probably are a few last minute things I could get," Chulyin adds and joins Fen once they are ready to strike the market.
Farzin Maaravi
|
Farzin, always up for some shopping, joins Fen and the others. He buys replacement cosmetics for his disguise kit, a delightful little signal whistle, that he hangs around his neck, some mochi, which he finds much more pleasant than the bitter mellon, but when it comes to the climbing kits, he is at quite a loss.
”I don’t believe I’ve ever climbed before.” He looks at the crampons as though putting a fish on his foot made more sense.
”What’s climbing, boss?” squawks Papayo, stretching his wings.
”Yes, exactly.”
But he buys a kit nonetheless, and crams it into his pack.

As you weave among the fishmongers, tamagoyaki vendors, and wagons you ask around about the island; those of you who do not speak Minkaian or Tien have a tougher time, but still make progress as this is a city filled with travelers from all around Golarion. You also try to think about what you know about these ley lines.
You hear several stories about local hunters and homesteaders avoiding the island — it seems the creatures there are notably hardy and ferocious. Most people don’t bother testing the wildlife of Kayajima, and those who try to make a home on the free land end up retreating back to Sakakabe and licking their wounds.
Chulyin points out an etched relief on a stone wall. It depicts a warrior wearing karuta armor. The druid knows there are several such etchings on the stone walls that outline Sakakabe’s streets, but modern architecture makes them difficult to spot. Saliss points out that the people of ancient Sakakabe (those who likely made the warrior-etchings), used the then-active ley lines as a power source to advance their society with minimal disruption to the environment.
One wonders if there's a connection.
| GM Doug H |
After shopping, you board the Auspicious Pearl. Calm waves gently knock against the wooden hull while Masuhei sculls his wasen boat with a long, single oar. He tries to pry all the gossip he can from you about the Society, and greatly enjoys vicariously experiencing your adventures! The journey takes about two hours.
Now is the time to wrap up any other purchases or ask Masuhei any other questions. I will be moving you on in the early evening.
Chulyin the Spirit Talker

"Interesting," Chulyin comments. "A way to power the engine of civilization without disrupting nature."
Provisioned and aboard the ship, he asks Musaheui, "How is the fishing around the island?"
| GM Doug H |
"My friends tell me the fishing is excellent — as you probably saw in the market. We call the oysters, what I catch, the 'milk of the sea' because they're so nutritious — and they're delicious!"
--
The island's verdant forest and single tall mountain come into sharper contrast as the Auspicious Pearl nears. Masuhei docks at a rock pier in the southeast, and tells you to follow the path to the fort; Kukuha is likely there. Masuhei bids you farewell and informs you that he’ll be back to pick you up that night. He also offers to take you to his favorite restaurant. "We'll toast your imaginary 'Ley-Lines' over some fresh oyster soup!" The talkative fisherman dips the oar and waves goodbye.
With nothing for it, you make your way up the rocky pier and farther inland. A path winds into a stretch of cedar trees. The forest is tranquil, and the path, although partially overgrown with ground foliage, remains clear beneath the dense canopy. The ground is packed with dirt and pine needles. An occasional rustle of leaves or flapping of wings breaks the silence. The air smells of rich earth and peat.
As you travel, Sallis hides in the dark shadows of the pine trees while Farzin keeps an eye out for ley lines by detecting magic. Biago, Chulyin, and Fen keep an eye out for danger. You all have weapons drawn, having been warned about the island's ferocious beasties. For quite a while, however, only rabbits and sika deer bound through the underbrush. Then, as you approach a clearing, branches snap, and squeals of fury shatter the tranquil morning air and four angry boars rush out from the forest!
Perhaps you can bring along some meat to dinner with Masuhei tonight. Or, the forest will have you…

The first boar tries to gore Sallis, gouging his skin with two deep gashes! Two hits for net 32 damage (one was a nat 20 but only raised to a success). If you want to block this will be reduced to 27.
The second boar launches a devastating attack at poor Grosk the troll Another crit and ends the illusion. The creature shakes its head in frustration before moving on to the next target… the jaguar!
The final boar charges Chulyin. The wise druid's foresight saves his bacon as the boar's otherwise devastating charge is dampened by the shield of force. It then flails at the druid one last time. 10 damage or block for 5 if you want to dismiss the shield.

I did not want to block. I will block if it prevents me from going down or prevents death.
Sallis renews his magical shield and then strikes twice at the boar before him. Neither attempt hits.

Biago looks around in a bit of concern over the current situation.
"Do we need to flee? Or should we stay?"
He continues to concentrate on his spell, leaving the sphere on #4, hoping to finally take it down. He move it over to onto #2

He then looks down and sees a rock on the ground. He mumbles and gestures, and the rock rises up from the ground and hurls itself at #2.

Zhao Li disappears from Fen's view with a satisfied smirk and a quick flick of his spectral Katana to remove the blood, which Fen echoes.
"Stay Biago, we've got this!"
Zhao Li's spectral form is replaced in Fen's eyes with that of muscular Zhao Shuo, who has a look of concern and is looking over at Saliss. He shouts at Fen in Tien that he needs help, and Fen obliges, moving her hands and begging her ancestors to accept Sallis into the family temporarily.

She then moves gracefully into position flanking again with Chulyin's jaguar, the pace of her movements and strikes requiring just a couple of steps before her next attack. Her hair is flowing around her head as if she were in a strong wind.
She's too slow to come and flank with Saliss unfortunately, 20 foot move speed thanks to full plate

"Thanks for the healing! I agree, we stay. If someone could set up a potential flank for me, that would help."

Chulyin the Spirit Talker
|
The air in front of Chulyin shimmers and the sound of breaking glass is lost in the heat of battle as the boar drive's its tusk into his leg.
Shield Block. Hopefully, I don't regret it.
I believe there's supposed to be a boar adjacent to me. Unless it has a 40 ft reach.
He steps away from the boar and swiftly chants while forming his free hand into an arcane sign, "Stailc dealanaich!"

The boar burns, and then a rock cracks its tusk! The cat then bites it and Chulyin zaps it. -42 HP Battered with so many types of pain, the creature lowers its head in an attempt to make itself smaller and begins to turn away — those of you trained in nature can tell that the animal is about to flee!
The lightning glances off the third boar's thick hide, doing some damage but less than the full amount.
Meanwhile, Fen's ancestor Zhao Shuo brings the rogue succor. Saliss only needs a flank, and then everything will once again be right in his world.
