As you have indicated wanting to fully explore this level, and most of these rooms have little resistance to offer, we'll fast forward through some of this...
D17. Kitchen: The orderlies prepare meals for themselves and the inmates here. The three closets to the west include a privy, a pantry, and (in the central room) a trap door that covers a funnel-shaped hole in the floor. This 3-foot-deep funnel narrows to a 1-foot diameter hole that leads southeast. A foul odor of rot and filth wafts up from this tube, and you hear distant sounds of something shuffling, grunting, and slobbering somewhere below.
D18. Armory: This room contains a dozen extra suits of armor and weapons for the orderlies.
D19. Baths: This room, featuring a few large tubs, is used by the orderlies to bathe once every other week.
D20. Laundry: This room is used to clean clothes and sheets used by the orderlies and inmates.
D21. Barracks: The orderlies sleep here in four double bunks. Three orderlies are currently resting here. You quickly subdue them.
D22. Guest Room: This room, currently empty, is sometimes used by other Keepers of the Oldest if their research requires them to stay overnight.

Borax eyes the wand and responds. "While one may argue I am undeserving, the wand would give me somethiing to do should we fight someone susceptible to it. "
Borax is probably going to be in a better position to use it having little else to do in combat.

![]() |

Igor looks at Pai.
"Maybe you should let him have it for now. I am sure that he will leave you a charge or two to play with when this is all over."
"We are done here. It is time to head downstairs."

![]() |

After a brief pause, Pai play-pouts a little and sighs as she hands it over to Borax. "Fiiine. I wanna play with it after all this, so try to save some for me, okay?"
Pai is happy to go up front, especially if Pebble comes with her.

![]() |

Sure Tiny Pebble can go in the front if you like with Pai. Igor will be right behind him as his Perception is sky high. We might want Droogami up there as well as he is the closest thing to a front-liner that this party has.

![]() |

As Pebble approaches a door, Pai flies forward to try the doorknob. If it's locked, she motion for Borax to come forward. If it's unlocked, she'll open it and peek out, moving forward if there's nothing of note in the area beyond.
Looks like we have to decide which way to go: down the stairs or through the door. Pai will vote door unless she sees something in the hall.

![]() |

In the end it really does not matter as we are going to explore the whole place anyways. Open the door and let us keep this game moving. :)
Igor moves up to check out the door before Pai opens it.
(Take 10 on Perception is 31)

Igor moves up to check out the door before Pai opens it.

I agree!

GM Fuzzfoot |

D36. A single large desk sits in the northern part of this room, a high-
backed chair with a deep purple cushion sitting just beyond it.
There seems to be little of interest here.
(Did I get the right door?)

![]() |

Igor checks the room for traps and valuables.
(Take 10 on Perception of 31)
@GM Fuzzfoot - One door is as good as the next when you are sweeping through a level. :)
(Assuming that we find nothing of value we can proceed with the door in Room D36 after checking for traps of course)

![]() |

Pai hates it when there's more than one way to go. The unexplored open corridor beckons, but if they backtrack to follow it this path will nag at her. Arrgh! Finish this one and get back to the other one! ASAP! While Igor is taking, like, ten gosh darned minutes to check this little room, she flies to the next door and opens it.
Not trying to disparage you, Igor. Pai's fickle and impulsive, plus she's worried about being caught by surprise by another ghoul. Where there's one there's prob'ly more!

grimdog73's pregen character |

Lini approves of the slow methodical search.
Oh Pai...you'll get your knickers in a twist if you keep worrying. relax..we'll be fine... she says as she rubs Droogi absentmindedly.
Lini is the laidback type...no worries man...until she gets mad...kind of a cross between Bob Marley and the Hulk...

![]() |

Igor shrugs at Pai's impulsiveness. His cursory inspection (a Take 10) is highly accurate and very quick indeed.
I think you are getting Take 10 and Take 20 a little confused. A Take 10 takes the same amount of time as a regular Perception check which is a move action or about 3 seconds. Igor's Take 20 would be a 41 which is overkill at this level. :)
Of course a few seconds could seem like minutes to a Gnome. ;)

GM Fuzzfoot |

A large circular table in this study is cluttered with scrolls, books, and an eclectic mix of strange devices that could be surgical instruments, weapons, or writing implements. A human skull bearing horn-like growths along one side and with a malformed jaw sits on one corner of the desk.
Sitting at the table, an old man looks at you as you open the door. "Took you long enough. Now, kindly tell me why you are here and ransacking my clinic? I have bigger fish to fry than you!"

![]() |

Borax takes out his wand of Suggestion, but keeps it lowered. It's possible a smile had snuck across his face, but no one could recall for sure.

grimdog73's pregen character |

Your clinic? This is a pit of madness and evil, you miserable cur! What despicable acts have you been doing here? Lini says, her voice carrying a tone the others haven't heard. She rests her hand on Droogi, ready to send him in a moment's notice. He senses this as he lowers and readies himself to pounce.

![]() |

"Now wait, guys. We're just assuming this is the guy we're looking for. Let's verify his identity first. Who's good at telling if someone's bluffing? 'Cause if he's smart he'll lie about that and all. Hey! Dude! What's your name?" Pai, the ever-smooth and subtle gnome strikes again!

![]() |

Igor curiosity is piqued by strange skull and his eyes dart around looking at the scrolls and books seeing if any might be of use to him.
(Take 10 on Perception is 31)
@GM Fuzzfoot - Are there any Knowledge or Appraise checks that might be helpful here to get a bit more information about what we are seeing?
He is not taken back by Lini's justifiable reaction but Pai's querry catches him off-guard as he fails to stifle a shallow snort.
That is funny. :)

GM Fuzzfoot |

Yah, me too!
Igor notices that the papers seem to be primarily translations and notes of the Pnakotic Manuscripts.
The man, who is all serious and composed, just drops his jaw as he tries to understand what Pai is saying.
"What? Who am I? Don't you know? I don't have time for this. It is time for you to go."
He appears to start muttering an incantation.

Igor moves to the door. He times his casting of his missiles to disrupt his enemy's spell casting.
Magic Missile,Intense Spells: 3d4 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3, 3) + 3 + 2 = 15
@GM Fuzzfoot - If the current spell is not broken after Raynard's and Peeble's attacks then he lets the missiles fly immediately otherwise he will hold them to interrupt Crove's Standard action on his turn. Even if Crove does not cast on his turn he will be eating the missiles. :)

grimdog73's pregen character |

Go get him, Droogi! Bite the bad man! Lini swats Droogi on the hindquarters and the cat darts forward and nips at the man. She moves up to support the cat.

GM Fuzzfoot |

Crove lost initiative - he isn't technically casting yet.
Not sure how you trip someone sitting down.
Let's wait for Nectanebo and Borax... I suspect this is over before it starts.

![]() |

@GM Fuzzfoot - As Crove is not actually in the middle of casting a spell then my character is readying his magical missile to interrupt the man's action on his turn. This is assuming that he is alive to have an action to take. :)
Who starts a combat sitting down? Clearly this man is a few books short of a library. ;)

Haha! The dice are totally working with the RP here. Of COURSE Pai would be waiting for a real answer from him. I love it!

Borax then raises the wand of suggestion and attempts to invoke it.
"Surrender!"

damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
...while Nectanebo takes a bit more time to make his way in, but does so, his stunning sword at the ready.
Double-move, darn this armor - is my lead blade still good (i.e. has it still been fewer than 5 minutes since I used it)?

GM Fuzzfoot |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

The zombie hits, and ends Crove's life.
It seems he was prepared to face some dark monster, but not the likes of you.
Crove had a dagger, a pearl of power (1st), potion of fly, scroll of binding, wand of lesser restoration (8 charges); Other Gear amulet of natural armor +1, cloak of resistance +1, bracers of armor +1, signet ring, iron holy symbol, 575 gp
With Crove dead, you look around the rooms nearby.
D38. Crove’s Bedchamber
A large, canopied bed takes up the majority of this room. A quaint writing desk sits next to the bed, and what appear to be three footlockers sit under the bed.
The three footlockers are unlocked. The first contains a rusty iron ring with keys, a leather bag containing 300 pp, and a crude map of the tangled tunnels below Carrion Hill. The second and third footlockers contain hundreds of fragments of pottery, small pieces of sculpture, tiles, and twisted and burnt bits of metal; a common theme is figures of stylized, twisted creatures and glimpses of things that writhe, formless
horrors that are hinted from the fragments. Each has been very carefully cleaned as Crove dug them up in his exploration of the tunnels under the Hill. The strange archaeological relics are worth a total of 500 gp.
D39. Crove’s Library
This musty-smelling room has two large bookshelves in opposing corners. A third corner features a cluttered reading desk heaped with papers, scrolls, and books. The room is well lit by a floating globe of churning fire near the center of the ceiling.
This room is Keeper Crove’s inner sanctum, his temple and personal shrine to the Dark Tapestry and the Old Gods. The globe of fire near the ceiling is a perpetual flame akin to a continual light, save that it gives off heat—not enough to burn flesh, but enough to keep this room alone in the Asylum dry and conducive to the storing of rare books.
Amid the stacks of research notes, blasphemous poetry, and other materials heaped on the desk are a scroll of contact other plane, a scroll of planar binding, a scroll of restoration, and a scroll of scrying. The books on the shelves are all old and quite rare. The Pnakotic Manuscripts were the crown jewel of this collection, but the books that remain are still quite valuable. All concern the Great Old Ones and other matters blasphemous and forbidden—feel free to place any infamous and notorious tomes you wish amid this collection. Crove’s spellbooks are kept here as well.
D35. Surgery
A long metal table stands at the center of this austere room, spots of dried blood marring its polished surface at one end. Two wooden cabinets stand to the northwest, while to the east are two empty prison cells.
D34. Observation Chambers
Each of these rooms features a chair and a peephole in the western wall that can be used to observe the occupant of the cell immediately opposite.

Igor nods at Raynard's query.
"That is a good question. I think that there are still some rooms that we have not explored."
@GM Fuzzfoot - It looks like there might be some rooms on the map that are not explored. Is this the case?
"To be honest with you I am eager to examine the manuscripts and his spell books of course but we need to make sure that we leave nothing of possible value behind."
Igor spots the pearl of power. He magically cleans the item and levitates it into his backpack with Prestidigitation.
If someone else really wants the use of the pearl please let me know. There is a good amount of loot to split here.
@GM Fuzzfoot - I just want to clarify if my character needed to expend his Magic Missile in the last combat or if Crove died before his turn with the damage already inflicted?

grimdog73's pregen character |

Let's sit for a moment and think of a plan. Running willy nilly isn't very Pathfinder-ish... Lini says as she hops onto a chair to sttetch out her little legs. Droogi suts beside her and yawns.
[ooc]yeah, grab that Pearl, Igor. Only thing thats handy fir Lini is the Natural armour amulet...the scrolls we can divvy up....the lesser restoration wand I'll use om Droogi...]/ooc]

![]() |

"Oooh! A scrying scroll? Could we use it to see where the other dudes are? Keeper Myre should be down at Rupman's Vat here in town, but Keeper Baskerwhel could be anywhere from here in town to a day's march east of here in the middle of, like, a swamp or something." She grabs the keys as she speaks, then stares at them for a moment. "Do we need these? I mean, there's a lot more here to explore, but we don't know if the monster thingy is down here or if we need to go find the other dudes. At some point we're going to bump into that thing. I...guess we'd probably hear it and smell it if it was down here, right? OOOH! But if we find it and kill it before we find the other two, then they can go on trial and go to jail instead of us killing them!" Wild hope lights up Pai's idealistic little face.
If there wasn't a race against time and if Pai didn't want to kill anyone unnecessarily, I'd want to finish clearing this level for sure! Pai'll tag along with whatever the group decides to do.
We'll pick up all the money, magical items, and stuff that's worth anything. Whatever isn't claimed by someone can go in Pai's handy haversack.

GM Fuzzfoot |

Yes, the magic missile was part of the total damage. Without it, he'd have got a chance to do some damage.
There is a fair amount of unexplored area, but the goal here was to kill Keeper Crove in order to weaken the horror. You may take the time to explore the rest, which will take the rest of the day. It's hard for you to know how much time you have.

![]() |

Igor nods at Pai's comments as he and Tiny Pebble help the gnome pack up all the new found goodies.
"Yes. I would like to explore the rest but now is not the time. We will need to push on and get to as many of these people as we can before it is too late."
"When we stop for the night I will have a look at the scrolls, spell books and of course the manuscripts and maps. Perhaps with all this information we will be better prepared. At least that is what I hope."
"Ok. So who is next on our list? Perhaps Keeper Myre as he should be here in town at a known location?"
I would like for us to hold on to the scrolls for now unless we are pushed to use them.

![]() |

Fair enough. Scrolls are for scribing, after all. :)
"Yeah, that's what I say. Get going to the vathouse. I've heard those're smelly. Maybe the smelly slug monster would like it there. And--bonus!--if we get that guy, the other dude is prob'ly way outta town, so the slug'll prob'ly head out there and stop killing as many people in town!" Brilliant deductive reasoning, Pai. Positive thinking and stubborn refusal to accept lots of murder for the win! She starts inching back the way they came, hoping everyone follows her so they don't have to kill anyone else.

GM Fuzzfoot |

As you head back, you get word that there was another attack. The old small church on Elm Way, where you recently killed the first Keeper on your list, no longer exists. It seems to have crumbled in on itself, leaving a sink hole where it had been.
Rupman’s vat is a 40-foot-high but single-story building looming over the river’s edge. The walls are constructed of middenstone. Doors are of middenstone as well.

![]() |

Blanching slightly, Pai's eyes go wide. "Well, good thing we got there first! Let's get to the vathouse ASAP so it doesn't beat us there! C'mon!" And with that, Pai zooms ahead of the group toward the western side of town. At the next corner, she stops, looks around, and then rises up above the rooftops to get a better view. Flying back down, she points and shouts: "It's this way!"
She mostly remembers where to find the vathouse, but probably not the exact location.

![]() |

@GM Fuzzfoot - I am wondering how much time has passed since we entered the Asylum? I am tracking time on buffs. Thanks. :)
Igor smiles as the energetic gnome "zooms" back and forth through the sky towards their objective.

GM Fuzzfoot |

Given that you didn't continue to explore, it has been about an hour to get out of the asylum and across town to the vathouse. But you spent at least an hour or two inside the asylum. Does that help?"

![]() |

@GM Fuzzfoot - Thanks. That was what I needed to know.
Igor uses his newly discovered Pearl of Power to recover a spell. He quickly expends this power by protecting his familiar. He refreshes a couple of his minor magics as well.
The Wizard makes uses of the magical bracers which they looted from Crove. While it is not nearly as effective as a spell it is better than no protection at all.
He grimaces at this weak protection and uses a magical wand to fortify his life force.
False Life, CL3: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
He casts False Life on himself and Mage Armor is cast on Tiny Pebble. He casts Prestidigitation and refreshes his Light spell on his sheathed dagger. Igor will claim the +1 Bracers of Armor for now.
