Gah! Finally surfacing after a hellish month at work, which I won’t go into because *politics*, and nobody wants to hear me rant. Will just say that, as usual, the nobs (knobs?) at the very top are [redacted], but the individual departments that work with us peons are ok. :/
“Oh no, heretics! Where?!?” Aith chimes in drolly, guessing that Bylo is responding to some accusation by the fiend that’s appeared. (Where’s the elf been all this time? Uh, doing complicated mental wizard math or something. *Puppy eyes.*)
She quickly sizes it up, trying to figure out just which of the lower planes it crawled out of. Know (planes): 1d20 + 18 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 18 + 1 = 27 She’s particularly interested in resistances and any special attacks that she should be worried about.
<“Get out of here! Or take cover!”> she calls in Draconic to the poor kobolds, knowing that one of the best tricks she knows for dealing with fiends will be disastrous for the little reptiles if they’re as wicked as Haleen says.
For now, she tries to keep the fiend at bay by blasting away with her pistol.
Attack #1: PBS, arcane strike, vs. touch: 1d20 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 11 + 1 = 28 Damage?: 1d8 + 2 + 1d6 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 2 + (2) + 1 + 3 = 13
Attack #2: PBS, arcane strike, vs. touch: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 1 = 8 Damage?: 1d8 + 2 + 1d6 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 2 + (2) + 1 + 3 = 14
I know, I know: once Aith gets a better idea in character of what we're dealing with - or if the kobolds get out of the way of a holy smite - she might do that, or maybe do mythic nonsense.
Haleen __
Haleen looks at that oversized hedgehog with disgust. "Ehh, thanks?" she replies to Bylo, in regards to his 'be brave you can make it' buff sending her to the frontline.

Aithaloessa shoots the devil and bruises it a bit, as does Haleen with her blade. It seems the fiend is resistant to physical harm. But the barbs of the devil are longer than Haleen's blade causing her to pierce herself on them.

Will: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 Aith's nose wrinkles in revulsion as she feels the devil's depraved magic slither over her, her scorn mercifully strong enough to see the worst of it off, though it still sears her skin with a foul - wrongness, for lack of a better word.
"Definitely not fire, probably not acid or cold, no poison..." she mumbles disgustedly as she realizes that the flashy, energetic magic she often favours isn't going to work very well here, even before worrying about magic resistance in general. Trying to think outside the box, an idea starts to form in the back of her head - can she answer its spines with some of her own? - but first, that gives her another notion while she tries to buy some more time.
It's crazy, since all she can do is shove her magic at the devil, but shove she does desperately thinking, BREAK!
She'll spend a use of mythic power to cast boneshatter with wild arcana: 14d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 6, 4, 5, 2, 1, 1, 3, 6, 6, 2, 5, 5) = 53 damage and exhausted for 14 minutes; Fort DC 20 to halve damage and make it fatigued instead.

Aith's frown deepens at just how tough this spiny nut (oh! if she had the power, polymorphing this ?&$#!@ into a green chestnut would be apt) is to crack, but at least between Yasmeena and the others, the devil is getting worn down.
She takes a hasty step back away from the direction it charges towards the bard, and then, hoping she can figure it out quickly enough that she doesn’t get surprised by a spiky fist first, starts calculating how to channel her magic through herself, the room, and the furious outsider to batter not only the devil’s body, but its mind as well.
She’ll use Sacred Geometry to try for a dazing magic missile, which means a 1-round casting time. Wizard math, aiming for 31, 37, 41: 9d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 3, 2, 5, 3, 5, 5, 4) = 31 Oh, well that was convenient. XD If we wanted to change up some of the operations, we could also do 5*5+5+2+2+2+4-3=37, I guess. :)
Trying to get through SR: 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 12 + 2 = 19 Gah! >:(
Riding the high of her chaos magic, Aith's mind works nimbly, and she has a good feeling about the flow of her power from her core, but she hits an extremely regrettable stumbling-block against the blind hatefulness of the devil's essence, and she can feel her spell's force blunting...
I don't think that's good enough - SR 19 seems a bit low for how hard this thing is hitting - but just in case, it would be 5d4 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 3, 1) = 11 force damage, Will DC 17 or daze for 1 round.
Ugh, should I just try polymorphing the damn thing into a porcupine, next round?

Bylo moves over to Haleen to assess her wounds. "I'm sorry to rely on your sword on for this enemy. I knew I couldn't hurt it enough, and wasn't sure if Yasmeena's arrows would as effective as normal. Let me heal your wounds as an apology?"
How bad is everyone hurt? If Haleen only took 2 of the last four I see 45 points. Anyone else, other than Bylo?

Aith peers in the direction the devil came from, before addressing the kobolds in Draconic, <“Is there anyone else keeping you here? We don’t want to cause any more trouble for you. If it’s safe, you can join your colleagues.”>
<“We’re trying to find a way to open the gates of the palace so that everyone who needs to can leave, but it looks like it will take a bit longer than we would like.”>
It would be wildly optimistic to hope that a handful of adventurers could waltz into a castle and turn the place upside-down, of course, but there it is. If there wasn’t an efreeti warlord on the loose, Aith would be considerably more relaxed about things, even if the Plane of Fire wouldn’t be her first choice of other dimensions to poke about.
Aithaloessa Cyana
Phooey! The internet gremlins ate my post, so I’ll try to reconstitute it. >:/
Aith takes a moment to make sure she hasn’t missed a kobold in her count, as she estimates what it might take to get them out, before nodding and reassuring the little dragonlets, <“We’re going to have to check if there’s anything special that devil was guarding first, but on our way back we have ways to get you past the kitchens without the salamanders noticing, so that your friends can find you later.”>
She’s sure that if she can just make sure to keep enough spell power in reserve, she can jump them past their captors without showing their snouts in the physical space. Or maybe stretch an invisibility spell to cloak them, with a bit of this and that.
For now, though, she takes a breath, makes sure her pistol is ready, and proceeds down the direction the devil came from to see what else there might be to see down here.
Yasmeena
Yasmeena smiles at Haleen (who looks like she wants to say something but doesn't know what is going on) and, keeping her bow drawn and ready, she follows Aithaloessa. Neelah, who also doesn't know what is going on, scowls and follows.
Foxy Quickpaw
The chamber the devil came from is simply furnished with an assortment of whips, tongs, and various torture implements hung from the walls.
Another door allows to leave that room in another direction.
Through that door is a prison. The east side of the prison is separated by a wall of closely set bars of brass. A stoutly locked door stands at the southern end. Only one prisoner languishes within the cell currently - a despondent djinni. He sits there staring at the wall weeping silently.
Yasmeena
Yasmeena peers through the bars and is mildly surprised to see that it is a djinni, not an efreeti. "Why, hello there," she says in its language (via her communal tongues spell). "Let us see if we can get you out of that cell." She begins looking over the door and sheepishly pulls out her lockpicking tools, absurdly hoping that Bylo does not notice them.
Disable Device, heroism/untold wonder: 1d20 + 23 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 23 + 3 = 35
Bylo Afir
Bylo considers telling the kobolds that the way is clear, but decides that would have weak creatures wandering the place telling anyone that lets them talk about the group that released them.... Nope!
He doesn't have the skills to handle the prison and is surprised to see that Yasmeena seems to be an expert locksmith on top of so much more. And there's a Djinni prisoner? He speaks to him in Auran, "Why are you locked up here? We might be able to unlock the door, but there seems to be magic blocking any plane traveling. Would you know anything about that?"
Aithaloessa Cyana
"Who is going to tell them, that the salamanders are also dead already?" is what Haleen would say, if she understood anything of what is going on here.
Oh, I must have lost track of which group of salamanders were which, and where they’re all coming from. It happens, I guess, for long-lived elves, anyway. “My gods! Where do you all keep coming from?! Do you ever stop breeding?” XD
For a former guardswoman, Aith has surprisingly liberal views about incarceration. (And dangerous magic, and trade in, ah, interesting substances, and… Chaos and elves. It’s a whole thing.) She does wonder who would be important enough to Jhavhul to imprison, but not as glamorously as the genie princess they’ve met before.
So, while Yasmeena works the lock, she asks, following up on Bylo’s questions, “And have you heard anything about the Flickering Candle? Frankly, I think we could do with some rather stronger light here. So far everyone we’ve met seems most interested in killing us, or each other, or just killing time until forever while the lord of the castle is away, rather than finding a way to get outside for so much as a change of scenery.”
Probably a tactless thing to say to a prisoner, but it’s been a long day of everything being on fire or gross or undead or some combination of all of those. :)
Aithaloessa Cyana
Not for the first time, Aith laments the fact that she keeps getting dragged out of her lab, and isn’t left alone to see what mysteries of magic and alchemy she can pull from her experiments, or, failing that, to play around with ways to lob lead and stone ever further and faster.
She takes a step back and tries to calm the prisoner. “Don’t worry, our quarrel is only with Jhavhul, strictly speaking. As far as we’re concerned, if we can escape, it’s only so much the better if we can also make sure anyone under his thumb can leave too, if they want to. We gather that he had a nasty habit of collecting genie prisoners, and an artifact has gone missing too that’s left a curse on this place and prevents free passage beyond the palace?”
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (5) + 13 = 18
Despite her good intentions, her wizardly mind can't resist the siren song of picking a new local's brain on any of the several problems she's mulling over, so what starts off as an attempt to be reassuring rapidly turns into a rapid-fire series of questions linked mostly by mad mage logic. And what is the average air speed of an unladen swallow?
Uh, maybe someone with better luck and more training and natural aptitude for diplomacy could take a shot?
Yasmeena
Yasmeena regards the djinni (and Aithaloessa) with sympathy. "There, there," she says soothingly. "It's all going to be all right. What's your name? I am Yasmeena, this is Aithaloessa, Bylo, Haleen, and Neelah."
Diplomacy, heroism/untold wonder: 1d20 + 24 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 24 + 3 = 29
Bylo Afir
Bylo joins Yasmeena trying to calm the Djinni, hoping not to draw more attention from whatever forces are still here. "Calm down please. We're here to help. We don't know what you've been through but it's over now. Just let us help."
Diplomacy, heroism: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (13) + 21 = 34 Assuming that would be help sing Yasmeena was first.
Aithaloessa Cyana
Aith's brow furrows in concern. She knows she can be a bit much, but even she can tell her friends offer a gentler, much less manic approach without much luck calming the inmate.
She moves to position herself at the bars to the cell where the others won’t get in the way of her aura readings, and calls up her cantrip to detect magic, trying to sort out if the poor genie is under some cruel enchantment, or if the wall he’s staring at is – maybe manifesting the sort of mysterious reflection that she and her friends have seen, but not visible to ordinary senses? Now that she thinks about it, she wonders if they all saw the same thing, really, in the fleeting moments that the image of Jhavhul’s vizier appeared. (Oh yes! Do let's speculate about the nature of supernatural qualia while exploring a dangerous dungeon! XD )
“Poor fellow! I’m not much of a diviner, so I doubt I’d have much luck reading his mind. Do you think it will be safe if we open that door?” she half-whispers to the others.
As she considers her options (She could continue to burn through her uses of mythic power today to cast something like detect thoughts, I guess, if we want?), her free hand reaches for the curious walking stick the group acquired before confronting the grotesque priest a short while ago.
If detect magic doesn’t pick anything up, Aith will use the rod of alertness to detect evil and, if something pings that isn’t the genie, see invisibility.
Yasmeena
Yasmeena is puzzled by this unusual behavior. She begins her Pageant of the Peacock dance, and tries to determine what sort of things could cause a djinni to act in this way.
Bluff as Knowledge (arcana maybe?), heightened awareness, heroism/untold wonder, Pageant of the Peacock: 1d20 + 24 + 2 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 24 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 45
Aithaloessa Cyana
"It's very strange - I think he's gone mad. There's no malice that I can detect, but not anything else, either. And it's not an ongoing spell, as far as I can tell, like a curse or enchantment. It's like he's just ... gone."
Attempt at diagnosis? Heal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 Obviously, his brain juices have been sucked out by leeches!
Aith speaks softly in an attempt to be tactful, before realizing that the poor djinni is in no state to be offended. "I dabble in healing magic, but more for bumps and bruises than anything as delicate as the mind. Do you have any ideas, Bylo?"
Huh. Feeblemind, maybe? Aith can't pull off a heal, which is the main thing that comes to mind for treating mental afflictions.
Bylo Afir
"Mad? What do you mean 'not anything else'? He doesn't seem to be doing anything but making noise. Not trying to hurt himself or us...." Bylo considers what he knows of brain injuries.... Heal: 1d20 + 19 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 19 + 2 = 38
Bylo can do a Heal spell by using a Mythic point. But if he doesn't know what the problem is?
Yasmeena
Yasmeena nods. "It looks very much like he was the victim of a feeblemind spell, according to Sarenrae's gifts of knowledge that I receive from this dance. The effects are very difficult to dispel-- almost impossible for me. Though you may be able to convince the goddess to grant you a heal spell, Bylo, which I believe would remove the curse."
Aithaloessa Cyana
Aith nods at Yasmeena’s suggestion. “That’s just it, Bylo. It’s not a trick to get us to lower our guard – the sort of ill will that your paladins, or clerics such as yourself, would easily discern with your magic and lore – but as far as I could tell, there really is nothing else there. Nothing we would recognize as thoughts or feelings as we know them, compared to, I don’t know, a lizard's. Or a zombie's? It’s like his brain has been scooped out.”
Bylo Afir
Bylo considers Yasmeena's and Aith's words. This new power.... He thinks about it. "I think I can, maybe. It is one of Sarenrae's gifts that normally I wouldn't have. But this new gift may suffice." He approaches the Djinnni, praying out loud to the glory of Sarenrae. Once he gets close enough to touch him he stops and speaks again in Auran, "I don't know if you can understand me, but I'm going to try and help you, if you let me."
If the Djinni doesn't attack I'll use one mythic point to use Inspired Spell to cast Heal and touch him.
Aithaloessa Cyana
Haleen gets the impression like the elf could know that from practical experimental experience rather than using a figure of speech. She looks at Aithaloessa with suspicion.
“I mean, I guess. If one spends any time doing duty on one of the south gates in Alkenstar, one learns not to look too closely at some of the carriers the Gebbites use in their caravans,” Aith offers in (somewhat feeble) explanation.
She watches Bylo’s operations curiously, inwardly conflicted by how some crucial aspect of life seems to come so much more easily to the magic of faith than of more experimental science. More research is needed, clearly.
Aith would never! Although, having said that, I shudder to think what might emerge if she were to play a few rounds of “Never have I ever.” XD Occupational hazard, for weirdos growing up caught between Nex and Geb, I expect.
Bylo Afir
Bylo considers the statement of the Djinni and frowns. "Iavesk? I am Bylo Afir, Evangelist of Sarenrae. My friends here are Yasmeena, Neelah, Aithaloessa, and Haleen. The Dawnflower encourages all of her followers to help out wherever possible. Can you be our friend for the year and day rather than a servant?"
"Do you know anything about the Flickering Candle?"
