<“Wait! Please!”> Aith calls out desperately, snapping out of her architectural trance, taking a few steps to follow. I wonder about that ziggurat: the easiest way would be, but then the flashier, more glamorous – and the dome! That one, especially! What it must have taken to build it up!
Ah, mostly snaps out of said trance. Still, as that part of her brain works in the background to process the glories of the construction of the place, the engineering that must have gone into it, Bylo’s reply to their prospective commander replaces aesthetic considerations at the forefront of her thoughts.
<“In case it helps us figure them out and a way to strike to best advantage,”> she pitches her angle shrewdly, <“What do the Flickering Candle want? Are they allied with the palace guards? I can see why being beset on two fronts would give you pause, but if they’re a third party…”>
If the giants and the assassins have different but not entirely incompatible goals, why don’t they work together? Aith is still at a bit of a loss for what’s going on. She can appreciate Argbadh’s take-charge attitude from her time in the Alkenstar guard, but she spent more time in labs and offices than in roles that saw her developing the skills to choose the right deputies and such. Turning things around, if a bunch of elementals or other extra-planar elements showed up unexpectedly in her lab on a bad day, she’s not sure she would have the aplomb to just give them marching orders and trust they would go along with it.
OK, but the "only prisoners" bit makes me think that Argbadh represents whoever Jhavhul's still on the outs with in the City of Brass. Maybe?
Bylo Afir
As the giant guard leaves Bylo glances at the targets they'd directed. "Only prisoners? No rulers? Possibly political prisoners? A royal prisoner is still a prisoner. So maybe Jhavul somehow used you all to escape by taking his place?"
"So if we want Argbadh's help I guess we need to follow his 'orders'. Or at least that's a start. I don't mind killing assassins. Sarenrae prefers mercy if possible. but sometimes killing one to stop the deaths of many others is the right path!"
"He didn't say that he could help us break the curse though. Just said we could walk around freely...."
Haleen __
Once the giant is out of sight Haleen comments "Walk around without having to fight all those giants is a good thing I guess. Otherwise, we can just follow our goal of getting out, however that works."
"So, do we believe the solution of our issue lies within the palace, or in this side tract with the assassins?"
Yasmeena
Yasmeena shrugs. "If this is anything like our adventure with the different factions in the last plane, I suppose we'll have to do both. Still, I think I'd rather start with the palace."
Bylo Afir
"Hmm.... The annoying guards in the Palace then? Maybe we can talk to them before we kill them? Oh, and you're the talker so, let me refresh that." He reaches over to touch Yasmeena again.

With that decision out of the way, the group walks over to the large entrance of the palace. The door opens easily enough for such a large one. A covered pavilion composed of twisting brass columns inset with ivory and precious stones encloses a cushioned throne at the center of this huge circular audience chamber. Less ornate chairs sit on smaller extensions of the central pavilion to each side, while giant curtains composed of fine brass links cover passageways on either flank, with a third, smaller one to the east. Fire pits shimmer with barely contained heat, and a deep pit is visible beyond the throne.
Seated upon the central throne is a translucent, clean-shaven dwarf clad in expensive robes, eyes aglow with a hellish light. "Bow before the master of the Haunted Palace!" he demands.
Bylo Afir
Bylo looks around as they enter but fixes his attention on the translucent form on the throne. So the "guards" here are ghosts? Were they also held here by the curse?
He bows as demanded but keeps his face up to maintain alertness. He also focuses on his Shining Wayfinder to scan for evil within 60'.
Yasmeena
Yasmeena curtsies, subtly performing her peacock dance as she crosses her ankles and stands up straighter. "Thank you, your majesty," she says. "We are quite impressed by the beauty of your palace. We serve the ruling council of Kelmarane, the land from which we come to you. We have heard much about the glory of your court, and what a good host you are to emissaries from other places. No doubt you have heard of us as well?"

Yasmeena bows again. "Thank you, noble host. Can you tell us anything about the wonders of the palace? While we are visiting, where would you recommend that we go? Are there others like you in your court? I wouldn't ask you to spread gossip about your loyal subjects, but there may be some here in the palace who don't impress you very much...?" She winks charmingly.
Diplomacy, heroism: 1d20 + 24 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 24 + 2 = 33
Aithaloessa Cyana
Aith remembers to curtsey alongside Yasmeena, and model her comportment on hers: between her own and Bylo’s magic, the bard’s words are irresistible, and the mage finds herself wanting to follow her friend’s lead.
“Apart from this imam, m’lord,” she chimes in, “we’ve heard snatches about something called the Flickering Candle? What are they about? If I may say so, surely your light is far too glorious to be described as such. Are they distant aspirants to your court?”
She keeps an eye out nonetheless for any signs of flickering from the ghost. Do ghosts flicker, as a general rule? Unfortunately, undeath isn’t something she’s been able to squeeze much study of into her research portfolio. She is, however, tactful enough to realize that it would probably be rude to ask a ghost to his face.
Why do candles normally flicker, anyway, apart from drafts? Wicks that need trimming? Again, possibly a touchy subject with small folk...
Aithaloessa Cyana
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33 Huh. I guess Yasmeena's magic is contagious. :)
Yasmeena
Yasmeena bows again. "Thank you for your hospitality. This is the first time we've been in your palace. Where should we go? Any sights that you especially recommend?"
Sensing that there are dangers and enemies throughout the area, Yasmeena will quietly suggest to the group that they cast some spells on themselves before they proceed.
Bylo Afir
diplomacy: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (10) + 18 = 28
Bylo bows with Yasmeena and adds, "Any places that we should avoid as well? We wouldn't want to be accidentally seen as intruders when we are trying to avoid such confrontations."
He also touches Yasmeena and Aith to renew the Touch of Glory on Yasmeena and provide it for Aith if she needs it in the future. Again, +10 to a Charisma based skill or ability check. Duration is 1 hour or until used.
Aithaloessa Cyana
Settled on Blind-Fight in the end, to work towards fancy trigonometry and trick shots. :)
Aith reads the room and joins the others in taking their leave politely. When they have a bit of privacy for additional preparations, she considers what spells she has at the forefront of her memory, and what they’re likely to face.
“A decadent priest, hmm?” she muses, remembering the thieves’ guild the Knights of Kelmarane had to fight through to reclaim the Scroll of Kakishon. Hopefully less treachery will be involved here, but if there are people who might want to mess with their heads and hearts, she can do a little bit for that.
Shall we start with protection from evil all around? Haste as an opener, once a fight breaks out? Who wants a resist energy? And then…
“I can probably toughen someone’s skin a few times, but,” she says disconsolately, weighing the contents of her pockets and pouches. “maybe … three times? I’m running frightfully low on diamond dust. And here we are in the City of Brass, and the grand bazaar so near, and yet so far away…”
She blinks around her as if a suitable window or door might suddenly present itself.
“I’ll have to start thinking about failsafes and contingencies,” she adds, falling back into a wizardly murmur of interest mainly to arcane theoreticians. Stoneskin for Haleen once we find this Shabendeh, or stumble into a tough fight on the way?

"This way." the dwarven ghost tells pointing to a curtain in the wall, the smallest one of those seen here. After a short corridor you reach a door. Behind is truly an unexpected sight in this plane of fire and smoke. A bronze deck looks out over a lush garden ten feet below. Rich black soil covers the ground, and from it springs growths of tall grasses, shrubs, and trees, with one massive conifer rising above the others at the garden’s center. A stream meanders lazily between the trunks and the buzz of insects drifts sleepily on the air, creating the illusion of a placid woodland scene—except for the fact that sky is filled with burning clouds.
There are stairs down into the garden and to the right a double door to leave another way.
Yasmeena
Yasmeena follows, though before they proceed further she casts spells on the party to help them in their quest.
She casts heroism on Aith, Bylo, Haleen, and Neelah. She also casts moment of greatness and remove fear on everyone, and mirror image, freedom of movement, and untold wonder on herself.
She looks dubiously down at the improbably lush garden. "That looks safe," she says with a sarcastic smile. "Perhaps we should check that other exit first, since our host mentioned that our enemies are upstairs?"
