As you pass the corner and are able to see past the statue, a dreadful howling fills the air and you soon find yourselves confronted by a pack of animals.
Because of the lighting they saw you before you saw them so they were able to run up on you before you could react.

I'm just going to make a move action to get into position for an OoO if they attack.

Though Katsumi was the first to react, his aim was terribly off. If baboons could smirk, it would have. But then two of the baboons are obliterated in the hail of pellets and collapse before they are ever able to get in a single scratch.
The surviving baboon screeches loudly and moves in on the foxy lady and snaps at her. Though it intended to do great harm, all it managed was an air-bite.

I moved Casper into position. I think that means the baboon entered into my diagonal threatening space, so I get an AoO against him.
miteke |
Ah! You meant a readied action. No AoO since it only did a 5' step and that does not trigger an AoO. An AoO is triggered if someone moves out of one of your threatened spaces, not into it, and not on a 5' step. You may most certainly take a readied attack though usually you must state what action you are going to do and what triggers it ahead of time. You would say something like "if it moves next to me I will attack it". What you said was close enough though you did not use the magical Pathfinder lingo.

I'm going to try to stab the baboon with my short sword.

The poor baboons die quickly for their cause, whatever it was. Once the dust has settled you can all get a view into the room who's entrance your battle took place near. Those of you with only normal vision may only see 20' which is as far as the torchlight illumines, so you will not be able to see the east side of the room until the torchlight is moved. In the room are 10 bunk beds in various stages of disrepair. The living conditions are crude which suggests that the room was used either by the humble or the unimportant, perhaps students or monks. The roof is mostly intact, unlike what you've seen in any other area. The east and west walls both bear sturdy wooden doors leading to other rooms
Rahella |
Rahella could do little but scream in shock at the sudden assault of the baboons. She'd never seen their like before and they seemed far more frightening than any undead she'd ever encountered. She was off balance the whole time and glad that her companions were much more on top of things. Before she knew it the fight was over and she was catching her breath as she tried to calm herself from the fright the creatures had given her. "What were the...things?!"
Rahella stayed closer to the others as they kept searching and saw the small room with the beds and said, "The monks must have lived here, I've seen similar chambers at the Pharasmin Temple in the capital so it seems likely." Her voice still quavered a bit but it seemed that the mage had gotten herself back under control.
Sarona |
Sarona blinks as the baboon attack is over as quickly as it began. "Surprising. There may be more deeper within the monastery. Proceed with caution."
Her fox trots over to Rahella and looks up at her with a tilted head.
Rahella |
Surprised at the presence of the fox Rahella remembered the creature was more than it seemed and knelt down next to it when it came to her. She reached out a hand towards it's head to scratch it's ears and then. if it allowed her, picked the creature up to hold and pet it for a time.
Lady Vulpina of Katapesh |
Vulpina takes a moment to reload her pistol. "Horrid creatures. Although it appears we have found a resting place that is safer than sleeping outside. It may come in handy."
Her eyes seem to reflect what little light there is, not entirely unlike a cat's.
Sarona |
Aaliyah lets Rahella pick her up and peeks over her shoulder at Sarona.
"Aaliyah appears to have noticed your distress." The tattooed ginger walks next to the arcanist.
Lupe Fiasco |
"Maybe the small room to the east."
Katsumi Ishikawa |
As the others talk, Katsumi took moment to pick up the one baboon that was merely knocked unconscious rather than outright killed. He put it off in a secluded area outside where hopefully it would not disturb them again. If it did, well, they did not seem to be much of a challenge in a group, so surely one by itself wouldn't be much more trouble. Before leaving, he pulled out a bit of his rations and placed it near the creature. Perhaps the reason for its hostility was merely hunger.
He returned just as Lupe suggested a course of action. Nodding he began moving towards the small, eastern room at the end of the monk barracks.
miteke |
@Katsumi By outside do you mean outside the monastery?
Note: the room description is a bit confusing (it mentions the door but does not place it on the map) so do not be alarmed if you noticed the door move. No, it is not a mimic.
You file into the room and past all the beds and Katsumi comes to the door to the east while the rest trail behind. Listening, you hear nothing. A quick glance around the room you are filing through also reveals nothing of much interest unless you like moldering bedding and collapsing furniture.
The small room in the corner of the monastery is the lowest room of a partially collapsed tower that stands 40' high, though the roof, all the wooden flooring, and the ladder that once served as a means to climb up have all degenerated into a jumbled mess on the floor.
Lady Vulpina of Katapesh |
Vulpina gazes up at the tower through where the ladder once led. "One might be tempted to go up there and make certain that nothing will descend and devour us in our sleep, should we make camp here," she admits.

Casper wishers softly to his companions as he points demonstratively with the middle and ring finger of his right hand towards the southeasterly corner of the monastery tower, indicating a position about twenty feet above the floor, demarcating the remains of a higher level of the structure.
"Look, there's a nest or something up there."
Lupe Fiasco |
Wolf will smell the air to see if there is a creature there.
Katsumi Ishikawa |
Katsumi sighed. Normally he would have liked to leave such a thing alone. But they had been asked to clear the place. "Since it's a relatively small area, shall we ready an ambush and burn the thing out? Though admittedly, that will work better if we believe the creature climbed up there instead of simply flying." As he spoke, he sheathed his kukri and pulled out a bow before looking to see if there was a safe place he could place his torch that would both illuminate the area and leave his hands free should a fight break out.

Pleased that his compatriots are now assuming a more cautious approach to their investigations, perhaps even a reflection of his beneficial influence upon their frequent rashness, the ginger smiles knowingly.
miteke |
Wolf does catch a scent of some beast or other all over the area. Wolf is unable to identify what it is though.
And if he could, does he have a way of communicating that to you?
But that lair looks a bit hard to get to. Are you going to start a fire as Katsumi suggests, or are you going to try to go up and explore it?
Sarona |
Intelligence?: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Sarona looks around the immediate area. "This location has an abundance of dried timber and similar combustibles. We must be cautious of igniting any of it with a careless spark--I estimate this room would be filled with smoke and flames within the span of twelve seconds, at minimum."
"The roof is also composed of wood."
Lupe Fiasco |
I assume he growls facing the direction. I know something is there but not what.
"Watch out there is something alive there."
Lupe readies his weapon.
Rahella |
Rahella found the discussion of whether to burn the nest out or not somewhat amusing, particularly since the great Katsumi was so adamant about not killing things earlier. Still she kept her peace about it until it was stated that there was something alive up there. At the warning she began to focus her mind in preparation fro battle.
Casper "Pythonglare" Cantour |
"A valid point, Sarona," admits Vulpina. "One wonders if we could just as simply block this area off, then..."
"Yes, that seems like a wise idea!"
Katsumi Ishikawa |
Katsumi repressed a sigh. How quickly his companions forgot what their task was. "If you recall, we are supposed to make the area safe and secure. Leaving a creature that might attack civilians once the caravan sets up camp here hardly accomplishes that. As we've already seen, the animals in this area hardly seem friendly. And as we have also seen, Lupe can create as much water as is needed. He can simply douse what we don't wish to catch fire beforehand. Best case scenario, the smoke and heat chase the creature off entirely. But if it decides it would rather attack us instead, I can knock it out."
Lupe Fiasco |
"I agree we need to 'deal' with it or scare it away if it is dangerous."
Katsumi Ishikawa |
I don't really see what's risky about lighting a fire. I mean, if we douse everything but the nest beforehand via Create Water, shouldn't the other stuff not catch fire? Or I suppose we could just move most of the stuff out of the room and douse the remaining things with Create Water. So the only way I can see how this might accidentally burn everything down is if I understand the situation differently from the DM.
miteke |
Sparks are going to fly and the roof is made of old wood. And the area you are in is chaparral which is dry and one of the most susceptible terrains to fire. At least I would think so. You can douse the area around the fire which will reduce the odds significantly but I was thinking there would be about a 10% chance that the roof would catch on fire or some other pile of debris where the roof has collapsed elsewhere. But I have no real scientific basis for my number so it's negotiable.
Lupe Fiasco |
"I have had enough fire recently I was barely able to put the last one out. I think we sould try to scare the thing out."
Katsumi Ishikawa |
Katsumi shrugged. If Lupe wasn't in on the plan, then it wouldn't work anyway. "Ok then, Lupe, go ahead and scare it. I'll cover you." With that he, notched an arrow and drew it, preparing to defend his brother if it came to it.
Lupe Fiasco |
Lupe will get close to the nest-like structure and throw some rocks near it.
Casper "Pythonglare" Cantour |
1d100
The rocks bounce off the rocks and timber but nothing seems to come out. Whatever is in there is either a coward, too smart, or absent.
"Well, that didn't help much, did it?" Casper chuckles derisively.
miteke |
The wind whistles through the holes in the tower, sounding like a plaintive cry from a lost child, or, perhaps, like some monster? The sound seems to taunt you as you silently consider your options. As the trapped air enters the space and joins you, a little dust devil forms in one corner of the room but it does not live long and soon collapses from exhaustion when the wind subsides leaving you once again in silence.
Rahella |
Rahella watched as they enacted their plan, hit it with a rock Gorignak! Gorignak! Gorignak! which ultimately produced little in the way of results. Looking up she said, "Well, that was anti-climactic." She sighed, "Here, let me try." Rahella drew her hand back but, rather than throwing a rock, she sent a jet of acid at the nest above in the hopes that she could dissolve enough of it to maybe destabilize it.
