| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

Shakur manifests a dagger of force that stabs at the far ruffian, ripping some of his dark clothing.

Yellow advances forward, abandoning his hiding spot as he points a small leather wrapping it’s a sap and points it at Shakur.

”We know who you are! Stand down and accept your fate!”

Demoralize vs Shakur: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

But the ruffian’s words mean little to the cleric.

Blue advances forward and swings at Shakur with the sap!

Blue vs Shakur: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Nonlethal Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

The last two ruffians advance forward and cross paths with each other. Red swings at Shakur, while Green swings at Urzok!

Red vs Shakur: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Nonlethal Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 I’m pretty sure you won’t Shield Block that, Shakur…Let me know if I’m wrong.

That particular ruffian hits Shakur and harries the Pharasmin with his free hand, swinging it as if trying to pathetically trying to slap him around, but he is clearly doing it less with the attempt of causing harm and more to annoy and distract the cleric. And it’s working. Until you’re no longer within reach of Red (or until 1 round passes), you’re flat-footed, Shakur.

Green vs Urzok FF: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Nonlethal Damage: 1d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 5 + (2) = 11

Likewise, Green keeps “stabbing” his hand at Urzok, distracting the fighter. Flat-footed for 1 round or until you’re no longer within Green’s reach.

Prior to the Stakeout...:
Boodiddly bounces into the Silver Wagon with a spring in his step. "Dena, you'll never guess what we found!" he calls over the quiet sounds of patrons eating late breakfasts or getting a head start on drinking away the day's worries. Making his way to the bar, the minstrel plops a sack of blood-red berries on the counter. "We got these off a really aggressive vine, and I'm pretty sure it was an assassin vine. But! Did you know you can use the fruit it grows to make a really potent - and really expensive - wine?" His smile broadens. "I know, I know - you're probably thinking 'Not right now you vandal' and 'I still haven't forgiven you for the damage you caused' and 'Doesn't he know you can't just take those berries when the vine is dead because they become poisonous', but we harvested these before the plant died so they're safe to consume!" His delivery received, Boodiddly bounces back outside before Dena can boot him out of the inn herself.

No purchases at this time.

"Drat, we lost her!" Boodiddly's annoyance quickly turns to worry as the group finds themselves surrounded by strangers. "Time to hide those kidneys, boys!" he says, giving his jaw-harp a good twang for emphasis. "Oh! And hey, do you want to hear something terrible?" He looks to the strange man standing above him for a nod or some sort of gesture of agreement, but forges ahead anyway after a beat when he doesn't see any. "Paper. See? I told you it was tear-able!"

Boodiddly:
Dena looks incredulously as the gnome shoves a bundle of berries into her hands and is about to speak up when he bounces away. She looks down at the supposed assassin vine berries she was given and smirks at the gift, setting them down next to her to take care of them later.

Jevar grunts in frustration, sleepily as if he had no choice in the matter.

Well, I guess we walked right into this one...

He quickly grabs a vial from his belt pound, and compresses the stopper hard so that some sort of pressure-triggered reaction begins. It looks for a moment like a tiny diorama of a thunderstorm. With a flick of his wrist it speeds towards a nearby ruffian.

Jevar, hand of the apprentice is a spell attack roll, meaning that your bonus SHOULD be +10, meaning that you just crit.

Jevar chucks the dagger, which stops right in front of the Red ruffian and then stabs into his shoulder, leaving a gaping wound that bleeds profusely!

I’m not sure if it’s addressed, but in my opinion, if it takes only a single action to shove a potion down an unconscious person’s throat, I don’t see why it wouldn’t also be an action to do so down a conscious person’s throat (assuming they’re willing, of course). So I’ll allow Jevar to use his action to force-feed the potion to Urzok.

I think hero points are a Fortune effect, so only one could apply to any one roll.

And yes, GM, I’m well aware of the changes to hideous laughter in this edition.

That is correct; you can’t use more than one Hero Point on a given roll, nor can you combine it with other things such as true strike or Boodiddly’s counter performance. That said, the nat 5 actually hits.

Boodiddly wrote:

Just making sure; it is a big change between editions.

Urzok slices into one of the ruffians, but they are still standing and laughing away.

Blue Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Blue looks right at the gnome and can’t help but burst out in laughter and tears. Up to something! Because stairs are go up! Hahaha!” The ruffian’s laughter becomes more pained as he keels over and clutches at his stomach in an attempt to get control of himself. Meanwhile Green is just looking over at his hysterical companion. ”Haha. It wasn’t, haha, that funny!”

At that moment, amid his horrible jokes, Boodiddly notices something going on with the sides of one of the buildings: it looks like it’s…swirling? As the swirling grows bigger, the other amnesiacs notice it too—it’s obvious after all. An inky blackness swirls over the side of the building, and that blackness seems to coalesce into dark blobs that start to move away from the wall. The blobs take a more coherent humanoid shape as four more ruffians step forth out of the blackness. As soon as the last ruffian steps out, the swirling blackness on the wall slows, settling to rest in an all-too-familiar appearance: a charcoal drawing of a vast empty cityscape.

The four newly arrived ruffians all stick their balled fists into their pockets and pull them back out—it seems they had something small in their fists and they dropped it into their pockets.

Yeah, considering that Urzok is now only adjacent to Blue and Green is dead, I’m going to assume that he meant to attack Blue.

Spiritual Weapon vs Yellow; guidance: 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 10 + 1 = 13
Force Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Spiritual Weapon vs Yellow; 2nd: 1d20 + 10 - 5 ⇒ (20) + 10 - 5 = 25
Force Damage (doubled from crit): 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

He then Steps away from the barely-standing ruffian.

Yellow Steps up and swings at Shakur!

Yellow vs Shakur: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
Nonlethal Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

All at once, the ruffian’s sap connects hard with the Pharasmin’s chest, momentarily breaking Shakur’s already-diminishing confidence as he staggers backwards from the force of the blow! Shakur is frightened 1 and knocked back 10 feet.

Yellow uses Shakur’s stumbling retreat to advance around the cleric, away from the bloodthirsty hald-orc.

Sigh You said the specific order of your actions…

All four of the Dashed ruffians grin as Jevar casts a spell and they each swing at the wizard! You Cast first; four AoOs coming your way.

AoOs vs Jevar:
Dashed Green: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Nonlethal Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Dashed Red: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20

Dashed Blue vs FF: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
Nonlethal Damage; sneak attack: 1d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 5 + (6) = 13

But none of the ruffians manage to hit the wizard, right as he reaches out and scorches Dashed Yellow, completely catching him on fire! That…turned out better for you than I expected…inspire defense saved you (which I’m pretty sure Boodiddly’s going to cast again). Crit with the produce flame.

Did Urzok's doubule AoO like three rounds ago not tip you off, Jevar? ;)

Urzok rolls his eyes as more of them try to crowd around his companions. "Hold yer horses, I can only save one of y'all at a time!" he grumbles before racing after Shakur's most persistent assailant.

"BACK OFF!" he roars, shoving his sword into their gut.
________
Strike (Rage) vs Yellow: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 302d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 1) + 4 + 2 = 11
Sudden Charge to Stride twice and strike (he was just shy of being able to get there with one stride). If Yellow goes down, he'll raise his shield. If not, he'll strike again.

| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

Yellow only manages to burble out a ”What?” as Urzok’s sword embeds itself through the ruffian’s abdomen! Crit, and Yellow falls. Urzok then Raises his Shield.

Kinda-sorta botting Shakur: Shakur utters a brief incantation as a small aura surrounds him of Yellow’s latent life energy. [[R]] Casting death’s call; gaining 6 temporary hit points. (Did this with X Hum’s permission).

All four of the Dashed ruffians look at one another and nod. Dashed Yellow points to Urzok and says not knowing how bad of an idea this is ”You’re next, orc!”

Dashed Yellow Demoralize vs Urzok Will DC: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22 Success, but because of the Bravery class feature, Urzok decreases the frightened value by 1, so he doesn’t become frightened.

Dashed Yellow then rushes forward Triggers Urzok’s AoO if he wants to take it, but you can also save your reaction for a Shield Block and swings at the half-orc!

Dashed Yellow vs Urzok: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Nonlethal Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Dashed Yellow Persistent Fire: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4

Dashed Blue vs Urzok FF: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Nonlethal Damage; sneak attack: 1d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 5 + (1) = 8

Using his off hand, Dashed Blue harries Urzok enough to catch him off-kilter. Flat-footed for 1 round or until you leave Dashed Blue’s reach.

Dashed Blue vs Urzok FF; 2nd, agile: 1d20 + 9 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 9 - 4 = 23

Nonlethal Damage; sneak attack (doubled from crit): 1d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 5 + (3) = 10

Dashed Red slams his sap into Urzok’s stomach, sending the half-orc flying! The ruffian then gives chase!

Dashed Green advances forward and swings at the barely conscious Urzok!

Dashed Green vs Urzok FF: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Nonlethal Damage; sneak attack: 1d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + 5 + (6) = 14

With a quick conk to the head, Dashed Green knocks Urzok unconscious! This happens regardless of if Urzok Shield Blocked.

Seeing the half-orc fall, Dashed Green Steps to flank Shakur.

Since I’m using group initiative for these guys, I’m moving Urzok to right before the entire group of ruffians so it doesn’t bog things down completely.

I also might have to retcon some damage, because Urzok’s AoO could possibly kill Dashed Yellow, but the end result is still the same if Dashed Blue didn’t sneak attack on his first Strike. And yes, I was taking inspire defense’s physical damage resistance into account for this post.

Okay, lots of stuff and retcons happening. First off, Urzok, Dashed Green never provoked from you, and considering Urzok's (the PC) personality, I'm going to guess that you would have actually done the first AoO available to you, which was Dashed Yellow. And that AoO actually does kill Dashed Yellow, so I'm going to redirect Boodiddly's telekinetic projectile to Dashed Green.

So it went: Dashed Yellow moved up, Urzok killed him, the rest of the ruffians proceed as normal (with Dashed Blue doing 1 less damage from not sneak attacking), and Boodiddly does a telekinetic projectile at Dashed Green.

Reactions make things weird in PbP...

AoOs vs Urzok FF:

Dashed Red looks right at Urzok and yells ”Stay down!”

Demoralize vs Urzok: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26 Due to Bravery, that makes Urzok frightened 1 instead of 2. So right now your AC’s sitting at…21.

Dashed Red vs Urzok FF: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
Nonlethal Damage: 1d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + 5 + (6) = 14

Nonlethal Damage: 1d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + 5 + (1) = 9

Dashed Green Steps away from Urzok as he drops to the ground and rolls around to try and put out the fire on him! Flavor for the Assisted Recovery thing, since “stop, drop, and roll” is the most appropriate thing I can think of for reducing being on fire that can be done in two actions, but it’ll make him prone.

Assisted Recovery Flat Check; DC 10: 1d20 ⇒ 5

Dashed Green rolls on the ground, but the fire singes him just enough to knock him out! Takes the 4 fire damage Jevar rolled at the end of his turn, and whether or not he succeeds at the flat check provided THEN is irrelevant, because it comes after the damage.

Dashed Blue looks between Urzok and Shakur and curses under his breath as he moves over to knock out the half-orc!

Dashed Blue vs Urzok FF: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Nonlethal Damage; sneak attack: 1d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 5 + (1) = 11

Dashed Blue vs Urzok FF; 2nd, agile: 1d20 + 9 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 9 - 4 = 22
Nonlethal Damage; sneak attack: 1d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 5 + (6) = 15

Thanks to inspire defense, Urzok is barely conscious! But, he could’ve Shield Blocked at any point to reduce the damage, which I’m almost certain he’s going to do (and I will thus reflect in the damage tracking below), because objects are immune to nonlethal, so the shield might not have had any damage on it this whole time (due to slightly different language in certain things, whether that’s the case is a bit up in the air, but for now that’s what I’m going to rule while I bring it up in the rules discussion).

Raise Shield, Demoralize, Strike.

For the record, Urzok, Dashed Red is actually temporarily immune to your Demoralizes for the next ten minutes because you already Demoralized him before, but…

Boodiddly’s thrown rock knocks into the ruffian’s head, knocking him to the ground!

Urzok gets an elixir down his throat as he screams at the ruffian and slices at his ankles!

Ambush!

Shakur maintains his force dagger on Blue

Attack!: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

He then throws another heal Urzok's way

Heals!: 2d8 + 16 ⇒ (3, 3) + 16 = 22

"Had enough?" he asks, mildly out of breath from all his spellcasting.

The forceful dagger stabs Dashed Blue in the back as he lets out a bloody cough and he callapses to the ground! Crit! Shakur then immediately casts stabilize on the ruffian instead of the heal, since there would be no reason to heal Urzok if y’all weren’t in immediate danger.

The silence overpowers the area as the nearby charcoal mural looms over the amnesiacs and the myriad dead bodies of the ruffians. And I’ll be happy to let you guys know that I’ll probably never run those NPCs again, because they have way too may abilities for what level they were.

Unless y’all want to try to continue after the woman in black that you were chasing before, Treat Wounds and all that jazz is hand-waved. Also, everyone gets a Hero Point because holy crap I was not expecting you guys to be victorious in that combat!

The ruffians have little in the way of equipment—each having a sap, studded leather, and a sling with some bullets. Inventory Updated But what they had of note on them was what the four Dashed ruffians stuffed in their pockets that the other four ruffians also had: each ruffian had a single gold coin. One side of the coins is smooth, while the other bears a trio of spiraling tendrils radiating out from a single point.

What do you do?

Urzok lays on the floor and groans. I could just sleep here and wake in the morning feeling better. Ugggggggh... "We chasing after the broad or, uh, sitting tight for a bit?"
________
Could go either way, up to y'all!

For the record, assuming Shakur uses Assurance to avoid crit failures and you roll average on the Treat Wounds, it’ll take just under two straight hours (110 minutes) to bring everyone back up to full HP. Not to mention: y’all have an unconscious (but not dead) ruffian.

Jevar grunts and brushes off his clothes, with the skirmish closed.

No, let's get this one tied up and safely in our quarters. Once we're done with him, perhaps we hand him over to Ms. Wrentz.
