Hello and welcome to my first attempt at GMing a PbP session. Thank you in advance for your patience with me as I get my bearings...

I have GMed before in F2F (Face to Face) PFS play, but since there's no history of that visible here, allow me to give you a short blurb on my "style".

My guiding Rule #1 is that, to the best of my ability, everyone has fun. A student of Linguistics may notice there are a couple caveats. One is the "best of my ability". I don't derive personal pleasure from handing out TPKs (Total Party Kill). That does not mean I'm "easy". I am obligated to run a scenario as written, by the rules of Pathfinder/PFS. Particular scenarios are scripted to be deadly and that's how I run those. This is not one of those scenarios at least. So hopefully it will suffice to say that if your character does something heroically foolish, they will suffer appropriate consequences. If a player is struggling with a rule/mechanic/whatever I will help you. The second caveat is that *everyone* has fun. If one person's idea of fun is at odds with everyone else's, I'm obligated to remedy that. This does not mean I will target optimized characters. Unless the behavior of a player/character is completely monopolizing the table, trivializing whole encounters, and nullifying other's existence, then I may feel a need to intervene.

That said, if your character has any...unusual..capabilities that might require GM discretion it's best to bring that up before playing if you want to know my opinion on it.

...or any other questions: fire away!

I don't think there's anything tricky with this character mechanically, just that Spellslinger is a very "rough" archetype (you lose a lot to gain a spell gun). Anyway, that isn't the main point of interest about this character, which is instead that she is a "child" navigating an adult world (but showing the resulting resilience). So, I'm hoping that will be interesting from an RP standpoint.

There's not a lot in the gameplay thread yet, is now a good time to post some intros or would you like us to wait a bit longer on that?

Grand Lodge

did "child" require a boon? PFS is "adult to venerable" or however they phrase it? (with the glaring exception of Yoon).

FWIW I don't expect to heavily "police" ppl's characters. I'm naive/lazy enough to expect players to run their chars within the rules. That's my take on something like Spellslinger. You do you. If there's a rules question that needs to be settled I'll gladly provide my opinion/interpretation free of charge. (and make any final decisions as needed.)

I'm planning to keep the Gameplay thread pristine until the official Gameday launch Aug 26. (dot&delete is fine) We'll do character introductions before that tho, most likely in the Recruitment thread. I'd like to see how the 7th player situation filters out first.

Before we begin I'll go over the "Influence" mechanics in this thread. Confusion about what chars can actually do is one of the potential pit-falls of this scenario so I want to take a moment on that. The mechanics should be as clear as the scenery.

I didn't think it required a boon, particularly as I'm not utilizing any mechanical manifestation as such. I sort of leaned the ability scores that way, did not change the character's size, etc. So as far as that goes she's just like any other medium humanoid and the "child" theme is there for RP.

Kind of like how I say Kaepora is more of an Owl based Tengu than a Raven one, where there are no mechanical changes but just cosmetic for roleplay.

Grand Lodge

Works for me. I was just asking cuz I was curious if such a boon existed. There are so many convention boons etc that I know nothing about. Being an elf helps too, since what's considered a young-un to elves is easily voting age to humans.

Hi everyone! I'm looking forward to playing with all of you. Katswiri's got some specific abilities and rules interactions worth mentioning, so I've got a standard writeup to go over her abilities and how she can contribute to most parties.

Katswiri is a Lore Oracle, and her most stand out ability is to more or less automatically succeed at three out of combat Int based skill checks each day using her Focused Trance ability. She spends standard actions for 1d6 rounds (which usually precludes combat use), then gets to make a check with a +20 circumstance bonus. Her natural divination ability also usually is used to get two skill checks with a +10 competence bonus, for helping to guarantee a few important non-int skill checks. She can also effectively cast Divination 1/day with a 1 minute cast time to get general advice on the adventure. I usually flavor all these abilities as either omens or visions of the past or future, as Katswiri is a seer.

In addition to her limited use abilities, she can act as a face with a good diplomacy and reasonable bluff check, and is trained in every int based skill, so can handle a lot of skill checks even once her limited use abilities run out.

In combat, she's less exciting, mostly acting as support with buffing and healing. She's got a -4 initiative modifier, so is almost always last, and is carrying a medium load and medium armor so isn't very mobile. She usually casts sound burst or heals people depending on the situation, though can also do mediocre melee damage with her mace. She gets CHA to AC and Reflex saves in place of dex, so does have a pretty good AC though.

Katswiri has the deaf oracle curse, so she cannot hear. Mechanically, deafness:
--Causes her to automatically fail all perception checks based on sound
--Gives her a -4 penalty to initiative checks [Reduced to -2 by her curse's level 5 ability].
--Gives her a -4 penalty to opposed perception checks
--Makes her immune to language dependent spells and abilities, audible bardic performances, and some specific spells or situations (like the stun on sound burst)
--Would give her a 20% spell failure chance for casting spells with verbal components, but her curse gives her the silent spell metamagic on all her spells for free with no level or cast time increase.

To help understand the people around her, she took read lips as a language with linguistics as noted in the PFS faq: http://paizo.com/organizedplay/faq#v5748eaic9vhs

More recently, she has purchased magical Spectacles of Lip Reading, which have made it much easier for her to understand those around her without needing ideal conditions (she just needs to pass a DC 0 perception check, modified by distance and conditions as appropriate to understand someone as long as she speaks the language they are using). Most of the time, lip reading is sufficient to allow her to function pretty well, but occasionally events will require some help with someone repeating information or explaining things, like when she runs into intelligent talking objects or there are loud noises out of sight that need to be responded to.

Katswiri keeps a visual journal of her adventures, where if she has the opportunity, she will paint pictures of various important events or interesting people/scenery/objects that occur during the mission. Its mostly fluff, but it's fun, and its how she does her reporting for the society.

Greetings everyone, Thank you for allowing me to join in.

Shi no kage (Death's Shadow) started out as a Wayang ninja but got rebuilt when he made 2nd as a Hunter. He rides a medium sized Roc called Boris. Now just to show you what he has going, Boris is AC 27 (+5 Dex, +7 Natural Armor, Mithral Chain barding and +1 from Dodge) with Light Armor, Dodge, and Weapon Finesse feats. He has Combat training tricks along with Attack 2 and Bolster Companion (bringing his AC to 31) from APG (pg 128). Just to be on the safe side, he wears a ring of feather falling in case something real bad happens.

Boris is still working on strength needed to carry Shi and the extra weight so Ant Haul is used as needed. (198 lbs so he has no problem carrying 44 lb Shi, an exotic military saddle, armor and gear.) At 20 speed on the ground, the two of them can walk through narrow parts of a dungeon (5' wide) and fly in larger areas. To mitigate darkness, he has the Bat animal focus on Boris and sees through his eyes.

Shi uses a +1 composite longbow it plink at the foes and for evil threats, he starts the fun off with Burst of Radiance.

Pretty sure the roc can't wear a ring of feather falling, without getting the extra item slot feat to allow it.

Say, Ela... curious why you didn't spend at least one skill point in Craft (alchemy) ... you get to buy your firearm ammunition much cheaper that way.

Or do spellslingers not use regular ammo at all? Hmmm.

His two tricks are Mesmeric Mirror (which grants someone a single mirror image and Fearsome Guise (which grants someone an indefinite disguise self that can be triggered to grant Jon a free Intimidate check along with their attack) - before we get going, anybody want either of those tricks implanted at the start of this? Jon gets 5/day, but only 1 can be implanted at a time

Hey Everyone,

I have some unfortunate news. I regret to inform you all that we will have to postpone Gameday VIII by 2 weeks.

This would place our new dates for Gameday at: 09 Sept 2019 - 17 Nov 2019

WHAT IS GOING ON? WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?

As most of you are aware, the majority of the GM’s have not received their scenario support for the Convention to include a good portion of the Specials. With Tonya occupied by other duties this weekend, we realized as a team that we are very unlikely to see the remainder of scenario support drop by Monday the 26th. Multiple avenues were discussed and what seems to be the best solution is to push Gameday back by two weeks. This will allow enough time for the GM’s to receive their scenarios and prep them.

BUT WHAT IF WE ALREADY HAVE OUR SCENARIOS, CAN WE START THEM?

Please hold off until the new start date to be able to eligible for your boon rewards. I understand this is a large inconvenience, we are doing everything we can to make this work. Part of that is to have everyone one the same start / end times rather than scattered.

We apologize for the inconvenience that this may cause, but we want all our GMs to have a chance to shine.

HOW DO I NOTIFY MY PLAYERS?

Go ahead and post the news to your tables. Feel free to copy this email if you wish. We will be posting notices in all the PBP lodges as well as the Gameday VIII Announcement page.

I know this is not what we hoped to do, and I’m sorry. Thank you for understanding that we’re scrambling to fix this.

If you have any other questions please don’t be afraid to ask.

Thanx Worg for posting the info.

so...what do folks want to do about that? If we take a hiatus will everyone remember to come back? I feel like talking weather and sports with Brackett/Aaqir and not being able to use any scenario content is going to get rather boring.

so, for the mechanics side of things. This scenario uses a slightly modified version of the PF "Influence" system. Throughout the social events there will be periods of time where you can rub elbows with the NPCs-of-interest. ("Temel will tell you more about the timing and NPCs")

The important part of the mechanics are that during each of these periods every PC gets to do two things. Much like combat, the "Influence" action is the equivalent of a standard action in that you can do at most one of these in a period. The other option is called "Discovery" and is roughly equivalent to a move action and can be done once with an Influence, or twice without.

If you wish to do something else like casting a spell or performance, this can usually be done between or as part of these other actions, 'within reason'.

Actions can be performed in any order.

Discovery: Typically this involves engaging an NPC in chit-chat hoping to uncover their likes/dislikes or motivations. After some roleplay it culminates in a skill check, such as Diplomacy. You do NOT need to declare what skill you intend to use when you initiate conversation. So you may use what you learn to decide what to attempt by the end. DC's vary. Successful Discovery can result in learning an NPC's "strengths" or "weaknesses" (the skills with the highest/lowest DCs), or circumstance bonuses for a specific PC, or circumstance bonuses for everyone, or even 'plot devices'. Multiple PCs may engage one NPC jointly, which might carry its own consequences. One PC must take the "lead" on the skill check and any other contributing PC provides the Aid action. A given NPC can be the subject of multiple Discoveries in a single period, within realistic conversation limits. With 'some creativity' you may Discover things about NPCs without directly interacting with them.

Influence: This is what ultimately 'wins the game'. You may begin with as much, or as little, small talk as you wish. The important thing is to in some way tie together a certain skill check AND a specific District that you want to convince the NPC to buy. Math happens and the NPC will take your advice into consideration. Do not feel obligated to use Influence every round. If the skill check exceeds the DC by 5, or 10, it counts as multiple successes. So lining up the right components can be just as effective, if not more so, than pestering NPCs at every opportunity. Multiple PCs attempting to Influence one NPC simultaneously must pick a "lead" PC to make the skill check while the others Aid. Aiding PCs must contribute to the conversation, and therefore must be able to converse with the NPC. ('crit-fumbles' exist too). An NPC cannot be Influenced indirectly. Each NPC may be Influenced at most once per period.

You do NOT need to declare if you wish to Discover/Influence when initiating a conversation. But if you start a convo then you must do something by the end.

Grand Lodge

Exchange Faction Members:
You may use a "Discovery" action to try to determine an NPC's "trade interests", necessary info to broaching a trade alliance. Attempting to create a trade alliance with one of the NPCs is a special action that neither interferes with, nor contributes toward, your Influence on that NPC's bidding. It works the same as an Influence action but only requires as much time as a Discovery.

I was going to use Jon's Eastern Mysteries trait to boost the DC of that spell by +2, but couldn't find a reference for the trait at AONPRD to get the details. It turns out, this is a Qadira faction trait that is only legal for grandfathered characters who had it before Qadira became The Exchange; it's not legal for Jon. (As is typical with these kinds of errors, HeroLab allowed it, so I didn't investigate further.) So, I'll be running at one less trait until the end of the scenario, at which point I'll replace it with something legal. (I think that's the right way to deal with an illegal option, right?)

AFAIK Exchange members have access to any legal Qadira/Scarni options. The issue seems to me to be that the source material for this trait is an obsolete version of the PFS Guild Guide. HeroLab includes it for ppl who want to make digital versions of characters created at that time.

Given the particulars of the your specific situation, and a generous interpretation of "...played at second level..." I would recommend replacing it BEFORE this scenario ends. Once you receive a Chronicle for this you will have indisputably played at second level. Then you can only use reTRAINing to fix things, and traits aren't even an option iirc. But since the act of playing 2nd level isn't yet complete, I'll say you're still able to reBUILD your level 1 char, update it to level 2, and bring that into this adventure. It's a little metagamey to do that mid battle, so I'll ask that you wait until after this encounter. By highly recommend that you fix this before the next.

Firstly, let me apologize. I think I gave you misinformation way at the beginning. Temel's event is specifically the only one the works the way I described with the two actions. The default is ONE action per person per event. That action can be Influence or Discovery. Temel's event gives a bonus Discovery action. If anyone was budgeting actions based on this let me know and we'll fix it. But your party as a whole will have 36 actions (max 30 Influence) which is still WAAAY more than necessary. The 66 actions would have just gotten tedious.

-----------

Now to answer some questions:

You can generally roll whenever you feel comfortable that you have said everything you wanted to say. If you wish to Influence someone into bidding you need to tell them what they should consider bidding on.

You pick which skill you want to roll. You do need to tie that into the conversation to use it. And on rare occasion I may butt in, for example if you've told a bunch of lies, I may say "that was a Bluff not Diplomacy". But generally you decide.

Exceeding the DC works a little different whether you are attempting an Influence or a Discovery.
For Discovery: hitting the DC gives you one piece of info from your choice of Interests/Strengths/Weaknesses. For each 5 points above the DC you discover an additional piece of info from the same list.
For Influence: hitting the DC counts as one influence point towards their desire to bid. Beating the DC by +5 counts as one influence and one discovery. Beating the DC by +10 counts as TWO influence. There is no mechanic for rewards higher than that (+15 etc).

Discovering a person's likes/dislikes is less difficult than influencing them to spend an absurdly large amount of money.

Since Kaepora may still be afk, I just share with the group that he discovered that Myrosype can not be influenced.

Ya, turn on the Diplomacy on anyone really.

We have 5 people, 4 of whom we can try to point at a particular section of town (which I assume leaves the Aspis lady with whichever we don't).
The Discovery attempt helps figure out which area folks are interested in.

We need to really get on the same page as to who to point where..

Who've discovered Petronax was interested in the Scriptum, Cyran wasn't fussy, and Myrosype (Aspis) couldn't be influenced and wants everything!

Currently:
Petronax - Scriptum
Irith - ??
Cyran - any
Temmel - ??
Myrosype - *can't influence*

We don't know what areas Irith or Temmel are interested in, so that might be helpful... though I'd say we should push Irith towards Prophet's Burg, as she was already leading everything, so would be best to at least have the political section there.

I would have preferred to leave Working End for the aspis lady, as it was describe as the least desirable =) But Katswiri is pushing Cyran that way...

So ya, try to find out what area Temmel would like.

There was a hint in Katswiri's info dump that Cyran could potentially use the working end for part of his trading ventures, and it does seem like one of the easier areas to make an argument for why he would want it since trading empires need warehousing.

We might be able to get someone to buy two areas, or we might not. I don't know how the mechanics run behind the scenes, but everyone except Temel has been described as wealthy enough to buy two or more districts, so we could potentially convince them to get them all. Our briefing suggested it would actually be better for Myrosype to get one or two than none, however, so maybe we should leave her one.

For Influencing Skills, I think this is what we have:

Irith: Profession (merchant), Knowledge (nobility), Diplomacy, Bluff
Petronax: Knowledge (religion)
Cyran: Knowledge (planes), Knowledge (nobility), Profession (merchant), Bluff
Temel: ?

Went back and reread some earlier stuff... and Temmel did express a slight interest in the Courts of Abstinence... (or at least that he had a potential profit opportunity in mind there).

So perhaps that's where we should encourage him?

Which would just leaves the warf district with no bidders.

I know we aren't done yet, but I need to report this soon for Game Day 8 credit. I think most of you have posted a Day Job roll in the Recruiting thread. If not please do so here.

Ooo, Boons! I'm not familiar with the ones you're talking about though, so a link would be handy.

I unfortunately don't have time for a gameplay post on my lunch break today, but I'm going to try to get one in later tonight.

while looking for a link I found this:

Quote:
Games ran during online conventions, or other boon supported events, do not qualify for the OSP.

So there is probably something specific for the GD8 'convention' anyway.

c'mon guys, get to influencing =)
Look at Katswiri's post a bit above, see if you have a relevant skill, and go talk to the person in question!

And we're still short any discovery info on where Temmel is leaning, or what skills might work to influence him.

Graves is all done for this round.
