You opt for the nearest exit, slipping through the ossuary and narrow fissure, into the empty caverns, and back onto the surface. Nanya's eyes clench shut and she shields her face, proof of how long the curse kept her away from the sun's light. You pause to give her time, first to acclimatize to the outside world, then to savor the sun's feel upon her skin.
After the placid hike back to the tent city around the reclaimed fort, you march through camp and receive choruses of "welcome back" and respectful nods. You are personally greeted by Captain Garess and the newly recruited Narthropple.
"Not sure if gloomy here would bring it up," the gnome says with a thumb jerked towards Garess, "But these laborers of yours are getting antsy."
He walks unsteadily, still recovering from his own ordeal yet eager to get back into action.
"I don't know if they're bored, spooked by the night sounds of this region, or who-knows-what, but I think it'd be good to put them to work, right quick."

Syretia |

Syretia nods, looking to Lord D'Elegante. "I think, after taking a quick rest for a meal with Nanya and the rest of the council, we may need to set aside our adventuring for some administrative work."

Lord Christian D'Elagante |

Christian nods his understanding at Syretia..
"Not sure if gloomy here would bring it up," the gnome says with a thumb jerked towards Garess, "But these laborers of yours are getting antsy."
Christian give the gnome a friendly look that is obvious to all, he is asking the gnome to be nice without the lord speaking.
"I don't know if they're bored, spooked by the night sounds of this region, or who-knows-what, but I think it'd be good to put them to work, right quick."
Cavan has been busy in our short time away...this is very encouraging. Is there something specific that has the workers...agitated?
He looks to the others...
We have a lot to discuss and report...
He then looks back at Captain Garess and Narthropple.
Please if you would not mind gathering all council members....we should meet to discuss our findings below and we should all weigh in on the matter. Say an hours time...is that sufficient?
He turns to the atoned priestess.
My apologies Lady Nanya...it would seem that duty has called. Let us get you settled in and we shall meet later today to discuss what you wish to do next.

Brand Oluffson |

Seeing Christian giving the orders quickly, Brandt finds himself agreeing with the young Lord, Aye, heavy is the head that wears the crown. Let us see what we can do here.
Content for the moment that an hour will suffice, Brandt lays his gear down and just brings his axe and bow, Fenrir leading the way to find Lira.
Greetings lass, we've back from exploring the damn caverns under this place. Amazing how they just go on and on for what seems like forever. But, now we do know what's underfoot and there is nothing down there which can hurt these folks. In fact, it seems like there could be safety there if we need it. There were giants, and carnivorous plants, and the undead all down there. Brandt continues on, the words coming out at a tumble.
I hear tell something is amiss up here, no need to tell me now, but can you come speak to the council, and give us all a perspective on what's happening in the camps? We're working to build shelter as fast as Cavan can put it up, but I think a perspective from one such as you would be good. With that Brandt straightens and heads back to the council meeting, knowing his time is growing short.

Bydar |

Bydar hopes Cavan will show for the meeting, the carpenter's insights are useful.
And he shares Lord Christian's thoughts on Nanya, "I hope to talk to you later, lady when and if you are willing. There are some here hoping to talk to me about Shelyn..and there is a meeting soon where they want to ask about my goddess and what her beliefs involve. I was going to ask Master Brightshield if he wanted to join me in case some found Torag more to their liking." A nod to the honorable dwarf at that before looking to her again " If it is not too stressful , you are welcome to come there and share some of the teachings of your own goddess. I understand if you need more time."

DM Vayelan |

As you part, Nanya sets about exploring the tent city camped outside the fort. The prospect of new faces met beneath the shining sun seems to chase away the gloom of her ordeal like it was nothing but a bad dream.
As decreed, in one hour's time, most of your council is assembled around a field table placed in the yard just inside the fort's gates. The party is joined by Cavan, Lira, Captain Garess, and Narthropple. Oleg and Svetlana are absent, still attending to business at their trading post in the north. Sapphira is also missing.
"We have more than just foundations laid," Cavan boasts. "While the first group of houses are still just frameworks and will need a few more days' work, I daresay that the inn is quite ready. In fact, your hooded lady friend, Sapphira, has been spending quite a bit of time inside. She knocks on the beams and checks the corners as though she fancied herself an inspector."
When talk turns to the agitated workers, the cured leper heaves a sigh.
"Admittedly, I may be pushing the workers a bit too hard. It has been some time since I've worked with a crew, and suddenly being in a position of authority again may have gone to my head."
Narthropple raps his palm on the table top to draw the council's attention.
"There's more to it than that," the gnome says, raising a finger to emphasize his point. "Most of these workers hail from the city, and they're only now hearing tales of the Stolen Lands from the folks who live around these parts."
Narthropple's eyes dart briefly to Lira, although you imagine the other hunters, woodsmen, and vagabonds that followed you here from Oleg's are also responsible.
"Gloomy and his men have secured the land for about three to four leagues around this here fort. Beyond that, though, there's talk of wolves, trolls, ogres, tatzlwyrms, thylacines, and all the usually bogies of the Stolen Lands. Surprisingly, though, there ain't much worry about what's below us. Either they trust that you lords and lady have tamed the tunnels, which I can attest to, or they plumb don't know those tunnels exist."

"Ah, Cavan, you have a right to be proud of what you all have done so far. But perhaps later , and I will help chip in, you could buy your hard working men a drink or three if we have the liquors? Just a suggestion."
Narthropple raps his palm on the table top to draw the council's attention.

"Actually, the tunnels are proving to have a lot of potential" Bydar says excitedly."A shrine that might be converted to the worship to Torag, and.. well, grand finds that may lead one day to an academy."

Brand Oluffson |

Considering what Narthropple has to say on the matter, Brandt turns to the companions, Well it is easy enough for us to ask the locals to tone down their attempts to scare the 'new' folks, and does it make sense for us to explore some of the immediate areas and pacify what ever is out there, and make a big damn show out of pacifying the area? He spreads his hands in a question.
Thinking for a moment, he plucks an arrow from his quiver, Hey we're pretty good at pacification of monsters, and clearing things hostile to our people out there.
Christian, do you want to address the workers tomorrow, outline what we're building next for them? Maybe this is the time to build a garrison to make them feel more secure?
Lastly looking to Lira and Cavan, Do you think this will help the workers feel more at ease? We don't want restless folk who aren't focused on the work. Maybe we should hire a bard to sing our songs! If that would help them feel more safe, of course.

Syretia |

Syretia notes Sapphira's absence with disappointment, having hoped for the chance to learn more about the mysterious woman. Her attention is pulled back when talk turns to what to build next. "Right now, we have little more than a hillside inn and a ruined fort. I agree with Lord Oluffson about making a show of making the area safe, but I believe also that we should endeavor to make a more fundamental impact on the surrounding countryside."
She leans over the table to point at a few areas to the north and east of the fort, saying "If we clear land for some farms, lay roads to connect them to the main settlement, and construct a mill where their grain can be processed, we will have laid the building blocks for a fully functioning local economy and set this place on course to be something more than a fortified waystation in the wilderness."
Syretia thinks back to an old story she had come across during her time at the academy, recounting the tale of a man who had been shipwrecked on an island in the Arcadian Ocean, and how he had survived for years before being rescued. One line from it sticks in her mind and repeats over and over. They say once you grow crops somewhere, you have officially colonized it.
Not the most colorful or profound statement, but not inaccurate, either.

Bydar |

That makes Bydar chuckle, "I'm all for the arts, though it seems a bit vain to hire them to praise us. Still.. songs to praise the hard work everyone is doing, yes. that's a nice idea. Wish I had a musical talent myself."
Bydar looks troubled, "Curses, Diseases, and uncertainty among our folks- I do feel that these are not so subtle signs from the gods that we need a shelter for faith to grow in." He scratches his chin, "However, as the under terrain may take time to flesh out, I understand it will likely be delayed. Brand seems to want to focus on defenses..quite sensible when we hear of beasts and monsters in the wilds. Syretia points out that the bones for food production and trade are needed to make sure the people do more than struggle to eat. Also sensible. I feel like an ass saying this, but my hope is Nanya is willing to stay here, and help with some religious services... this might allow the delay of a shrine so we can put the mill and farms and some defenses first. Or at least I would feel better ABOUT the delay. The mill just seems too good an idea not to engage in sooner over later."

DM Vayelan |

Incidentally, sponsoring bards and similar initiatives to appease current and new settlers would be represented by the Promotions edict, which encompasses methods to "promote" your new nation.
Brandt and Syretia's talk of more down-to-earth pursuits elicits a relieved smile from Lira.
"Most of the folks around here are used to hunting and scrounging to get by," she states. "If you can keep everyone fed, you'll definitely earn their loyalty and gratitude. Of course, you'll need to placate them until the first harvest."
Cavan hazards a smile before adding his thoughts.
"Schools and shrines are nice, but we do need to tend to the basic needs, first. Not to mention that farmhouses and mills are more within my talent to construct."

"Sensible,"Bydar agrees again, "My concerns aside, it is not met that people be asked to sing hymns with empty bellies. No goodly god would wish such." He does smile, "I think one day , even if far in the future, you will find yourself helping craft great works indeed though, be it grand academies or temples glorious. But for now, your counsel and hard work are both treasured. Thank you, my friend."
He too is interested in Master Brightshield's opinions on this, for the fellow's not just a fellow holyman, but an engineer who knows much of building himself.

Orlog BrightShield |

Orlog clear his throat before speaking. "I agree with our friend Cavan here. Food and safety should be our priority for now. Also, we should claim and secure the immediate regions around our capitol, stating with that crossing. Once that is done, we can reevaluate where we should go from there."

Brand Oluffson |

It does not do us harm to consider the other things of faith and learning, but our people need these first structures I suppose.
Grinning at Orlogg's suggestions Brandt agrees, Plus then we're under the open sky and handling whatever we could out there. We can certainly see what's out there more.

Syretia |

"Wonderful!" Syretia exclaims, turning to Christian. "It sounds as if we have a consensus. Do you have any further instructions, Lord D'Elegante?"

Lord Christian D'Elagante |

Christian has a look about him of content.
I concur with the council...we should lay claim to the river crossing in the east. We need to start cultivating the lands around the capital for farming and make sure to leave proper room for construction of roads. The mill will be beneficial for all these farms. Speaking of these farms...we might as well expand our housing. We will get more people before long and I would not want them to wait too long for a place to call home.
He stands up, scratching at the slight stubble on his chin.
Does anyone have any other suggestions before we convene for the day?

Syretia |

With a tone of good-natured teasing, Syretia says, "A shave, perhaps? But no, I believe we have given ourselves a great deal of work already. If anyone needs me, I will be working in the hall of our brand new inn."
True to her word, if anyone goes looking for the mage afterwards they need only to check the finest (and only) inn the settlement has to offer. Despite usually being the only person at "her" table, its surface is almost totally occupied by ink-covered parchment, writing utensils, thick academic tomes, and, on occasion, food and drink.

Brand Oluffson |

I think we are on a good track with things, building and providing for these people here. I would suggest we try and figure out better what lays beyond our settlement. We have explored what is beneath us, but we do not know what lies to our south at all, and have only this map to provide a sense for what lies to the north. Do you all think we should explore to the southwest first? Brandt asks the assembly before they depart for the evening.
Brandt will retire to his quarters for the evening after that and work on making more arrows for his ever-hungry bow.

Bydar |

"A suggestion?" Bydar ponders "Well, there is that stone we pulled from the formerly cursed object. Perhaps the wealth it brings could be used to purchase building supplies or the like?"
"Beyond that... well I think if I have spare time, I'll touch up a bridge or other areas with a sculpture or two. And I do have to meet with some of those curious in learning more about Shelyn." At Brand's question, "I trust your sense of direction and the land alike, Brand. It's certainly superior to mine. I'll be happy to explore with you wherever you and the others think is best."
As for Bydar, when this is done, he'll invite Brightsheild and Nanya if they'd like to discuss their own gods with those looking for a source of faith to see if any are interested in following those goodly gods instead. He does not intend to drive anyomne from Shelyn, but he is aware that others may feel a truer calling to other gods. He definitely looks forward to sharing his views on the Eternal rose though and if the others decline will speak to Cavan and his friends on the matter as soon as they'd like.

Lord Christian D'Elagante |

Christian stands as the others start to leave the room.
I would love to have dinner with all later this night...please.
He ponders what to do next. Glancing to the maps before him, he hopes the symbols will give him an answer to his dilemma.
Mumbling to himself.
Hmm...
...perhaps.
He looks up and smiles.
Tomorrow morning I plan to lead a team down below to see about securing the exits from anymore...visitors. After that I plan to address the populace...just a few hours before high sun. I feel it will help to put them at ease if we talked to them. All are welcome to join me.
Christian turns his attention to Lord Garess.
Since Master Leveton is not here at the moment, I would ask that you Lord Garess make arrangements for some criers to pass along our message to all corners of the capital.
I will have something written up over the weekend I hope...
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27
The Young lord exits after all others have left but stops short and looks at the map again. He lays a finger on the location of the Sootscale Tribe.
Oaktop Silver Mine. Hmm
Once outside the would be ruler decides to take a stroll throughout the streets. Talking to those that have put their trust in them.
I will walk around getting to know who I can as I roam the capital. Helping here and there. Helping the workers and making sure that he does get dirty with hard work.

Brand Oluffson |

The next morning the ranger begins to craft arrows, gathering the needed materials, and setting feathers and arrowheads to the shafts.
craft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
DC=12
check x dc= 144. result/7 = 20.5sp Expend 3sp and make 20 arrows in one day

Bydar |

to our good DM, put this in whatever 'time period' works best for your story and won't clash too much with other stuff :) Brightsheild and Nanya were invited as they might want to explain about their own gods
When Cavan and those he mentioned being interested in Shelyn have time, Bydar gathers them up to educate them, in a secluded area where they won't be in the way for others "Cavan tells me more than a few of you have expressed an interesting Shelyn. You want to know who she is, what she stands for, and perhaps if she is the goddess you most want to turn to. So, I'm going to give you three common teachings very central to her faith, then let you have at with questions and the like."
"Shelynites believe that 'The Creation of Beauty is the Highest Art', some paint, some sing, some wear a good hair cut" he chuckles "Though I must admit I've gotten a bit shaggy myself so I shouldn't bring that up. Beauty may seem an impractical thing to strive for in such wild lands, but that just means we start out with the beauty of nature along with its challenges. Some of you work build houses or bridges. And, without always thinking of it, you might choose a rose colored wood over a just as strong mishmash that does not blend well. You might notice some stones are paler than others, so place them in a pattern that will please the eye for generations. And a few of you see sorrow heavy on others, and you try to share their pain, ease their burden, and that is a beauty of the soul that , believe it or not, does shine through. Spreading Beauty into this world is how we not only ask for Shelyn's blessing, it's how we bless the world and show gratitude for its blessings in turn. It can do your heart good to help make the mundane intriguing, to help leave your children and children's children a brighter place than we have." The young priest's eyes are shining with happiness at the thought of that.
"Another lesson of the faith is thus 'Love Is Never Born of Evil'. Love is a positive nuturing growth. Love is shielding. Love is trusting. Love hopes and strives. To be possessive is not love, well I know, jealousy stems from evil and only evil can arise from it. Love, real love, should not be confused with those things. We may be glad an enemy is defeated, relieved justice has been served upon those who do evil actions, but we should never rejoice in hatred or petty revenge. Some of you, perhaps, have a loved one with you. A romantic partner or spouse, a friend you value, maybe family. You know what strength you draw from and give to each other. Others of you may feel very lonely, but trust me when I say Love is so much easier when you avoid selfishness." Few know better than I of this I think.
"One last phrase Love Is the Greatest of All Things: Love, kindness towards others, are beyond mere ripples in a pond, they can be the right pebble in shifting mountain slides. One kind act, one act of love, can have echoes through the ages long after lore is lost, languages change to be unrecognizable, and once great men's ambitions turn to dust. We never know which deed will carry beyond our life times, but one good deed, however small, maybe the very act that makes it possible to defy great evil. A single candle can hold back the darkness, a kind word can lead to miracles. "
He's trained in speaking, eloquent, but more importantly, sincere. And he then asks, "Now, thank you for listening, but that all said, do any of you have questions?"

DM Vayelan |

Morning begins in Charis, finding the humble settlement abuzz with activity.
On a hill overlooking the Tuskwater, which sits at the foot of the jagged bluffs, Bydar offers his sermon. Brandt, Lira, and Cavan, as well as a dozen and a half again other settlers stand in attendance. They hang upon Bydar's words, find solace in the grace of the Eternal Rose that is not to be found in the dogma of Abadar or Iomedae, as well as beauty not found in the rustic utilitarianism of Erastil or Pharasma.
Most of the questions that arise involve matters of forgiveness and mercy. It seems that many of your settlers have left questionable pasts behind them, but these questions provide promise that they want these pasts to stay well and truly behind them as they build new lives.

Or at least you expected no interruptions.
Your solitude is broken when a cloaked figure, the hood drawn almost completely over their face, sits at your table without announcement or invitation. It takes a moment of puzzlement before you realize that it's Sapphira.
"If you enjoy solitude, you may need to find a new refuge sooner rather than later," she says. "Unless you want a very unproductive inn. On that subject, I wanted to make a proposal."
The medusa, already tapped to serve the barony as a sort of enforcer, folds her hands and leans forward. Although she disturbs your carefully arranged piles of documents in the process, she presents quite the figure of a merchant making a business pitch.
"In lieu of installing any old body as innkeeper, or worse, recruiting someone unknown from the city, might I offer my services?"
You can see Sapphira's predatory smile beneath the hem of her hood, and even without seeing her eyes, you can almost hear her wink.
"I can guarantee that no troublemakers will be countenanced, so you don't need to worry about brawls spilling out into the street - once we have streets. Furthermore, this way I can assess visitors and newcomers as they arrive and gauge what sort of danger they may pose to your rule. If it sways your decision, I'll even let you and your companions have first go at naming the place, although I did have some ideas that were quite inspired, if I do say so myself.
"So what do you say? Can I count on a charter from the lords and lady of Charis?"

Bydar |

Most of the questions that arise involve matters of forgiveness and mercy. It seems that many of your settlers have left questionable pasts behind them, but these questions provide promise that they want these pasts to stay well and truly behind them as they build new lives.
At these concerns, he says with passion, "Mercy is a form of love, and Shelyn is a most merciful goddess. Seeing ourselves as only products of our worst, of our lowest moment, our weakest moment, our most selfish moment can become a kind of self hatred. A trap where we end up denying the mercy of others, their forgiveness , and even our love because we now refuse to love ourselves or even believe we're worthy of it. I have been..." The image haunts him, the push, the stairs, the cracked skull, and he stops and takes a breath "I have also had a moment that at times I fear will haunt me forever. Deeds I regret. And yet, Shelyn loves me. This does not excuse continued evil consciously chosen again and again, but it is a rope that we can hold onto and pull ourselves up with. Shelyn does not give up lightly. I can tell you that. In fact, perhaps at a future service I can tell you the full story of Shelyn, her brother being consumed by darkness, and the glaive she took from him to save him. She bears that burden...and she does not give up on him. Learn from your past, but try not to live there when there's loving to be done."
He continues "Some of you may want to do small acts of contrition, things to make amends. I'll be happy to offer my advice to any, but understand that those we have wronged, if they know of the wrong we did, cannot be made to forgive you. All we can do is show them what Shelyn already knows, that we are worth forgiving."
If there are no other questions, he says "There are other goodly gods. But I believe Shelyn has her eye on these lands and wants to bless them and us. I believe we can , with her help, make this young kingdom a place of beauty and love for everyone from ourselves, to our own loved ones, and yes even the stranger. I will we happy to preach, teach, and aid as you like if you are interested in the faith. SHould you feel Shelyn is not for you, does not call, but still ache for a deity, then fear not, there are other goodly gods that may yet fill you. Orlog Brightshield is also a priest, and can tell you of Torag. Nanya might be able to teach you of her deity if she wishes. As for me, I stand in the light of the beauty of the Eternal Rose and hope some of you will join me."
and unless there is more, he thanks them for coming, shaking hands, and offering to make himself available when he can. He does mention hopes of putting up some sculptures and building designs to practice the beauty and art he preaches.

Lord Christian D'Elagante |

I have not had the time to create a nice speech...So I will just have to imagine a speech about Bravery and boldness that is our populace. They came out here in this harsh lands to create a better life for themselves. That sort of thing. IF anyone wishes to chime in or add to the speech...that would be great.
***to those that gather for dinner with Christian***
We have many decision to make over the course of the next few days.
The young lord scans those assembled and continues.
The populace is looking for some reassurances that they made the correct decision in coming to these hostile lands. We have done great work in the tunnels below and that will help in the future but it is not known by many and can not be seen. We need something...tangible...something that all can see and feel, so to speak. We have the notes that our predecessors left behind but we have yet to confirm their validity. With the annexation of river crossing in the east, we have secured a strategic foothold into the eastern territories. We might want to pay a visit to the Sootscale Tribe to confirm what was reported...was truthful. If we can lay claim to the mine that these Kobolds called home, that would add some much needed resources to our coffers. This might even help to assail the fears of the population that monsters are on their doorsteps. I feel the Oaktop Silver Mine should be out next quest. We should spend some time here helping, organizing and preparing ourselves and then make it known what we are planning to do.
He pauses and looks at the others.
Thoughts?

Syretia |

By the time Sapphira is finished, Syretia is already nodding. "What you say makes sense, and it would make you more effective in your current role. It's not up to me alone, but you have my support. As for the name," she says, leaning back in her seat, "if there's anyone to have first claim at naming it, it should be the first innkeeper!"
Soon, though, Syretia leans forward again, her tone and face serious.
"I do, however, worry that it would expose you to the prejudices of the public. I know you are no stranger to it, and neither am I"--Syretia's eyes flicker past Sapphira to some old memory before returning--"but it's easier for me to hide my deformity than for you to disguise who you are. Those wounds run deep and heal slowly."
"Taking on this duty carries more with it than just what you have mentioned to me. You will have the opportunity and the burden of being the first and, most likely, only medusa that people here meet. For visitors, you will be one of the first representatives of this settlement they encounter. That is an awesome responsibility, in every sense of the word."
"I don't say this to discourage you or sow doubt. To be blunt, if I didn't think you were capable of it, I would say so. So, my question to you is, is this what you want?"
While she takes a breath and waits for Sapphira's answer, a thought crosses through her mind. I have to believe that this new nation can find more places in it for non-humanoids than as spies and enforcers.
When Christian pauses for input, Syretia says, "I agree wholeheartedly, Lord D'Elegante. Besides," she says, with a small grin, "perhaps the kobolds will be interested in joining the kingdom as our newest citizens."

This might even help to assail the fears of the population that monsters are on their doorsteps. I feel the Oaktop Silver Mine should be out next quest. We should spend some time here helping, organizing and preparing ourselves and then make it known what we are planning to do.He pauses and looks at the others.
Thoughts?
When Christian pauses for input, Syretia says, "I agree wholeheartedly, Lord D'Elegante. Besides," she says, with a small grin, "perhaps the kobolds will be interested in joining the kingdom as our newest citizens."
Going to assume the meeting with Cavan and others interested in Shelyn was at a nother time.
Bydar was nodding at Lord Christian's comments, "That sounds ideal. Financial security or at least a step towards it would indeed reduce some worries. The stone from the mines might also be useful depending on quality if they're interested. I think..." then Syretia mentions the kobolds joining and his brows lift. "Now there's a cultural clash. But, I suppose we should consider it."

”Oh, I wasn’t planning on being out here serving meals and pouring drinks,” Sapphira laughs. ”In fact, I was seriously considering recruiting your avian companion to be the ‘face’ of this establishment. He has the better blend of exoticism and...approachability. I would be more of a ‘silent partner,’ shall we say. I am much better at bookkeeping and negotiations, after all.”

The religious gathering occurs in the morning. Lord Christian's speech falls closer to noon. The discussion over dinner occurs in the evening.
Nanya nervously steps forward when Bydar cedes the spotlight.
"Namaskar," she quietly greets the assemblage. "I do not pretend to be an expert on the divine. I traveled from Jalmeray to broaden my knowledge of other gods."
She pauses and taps the toe of her sandal upon the ground, digging a small furrow in the soil.
"It has not been going well," she sighs, looking ready to retreat within herself like a turtle. However, after a sidelong glance towards Bydar, she recovers some courage, straightens her posture, and raises her voice. "But just as Father Bydar and his coterie have helped me, I will do what I can to help you all."
Before the laborers and settlers of Charis break from their work for their noontime meal, Lord Christian addresses them. The mere fact that he is willing to walk among them sets him apart from most noblemen and endears him to the settlers, even before his oratory reaches its crescendo.

Bydar |

Bydar's brows shoot up for a moment FATHER Bydar? He supposed it makes sense by some standards, but the title feels odd. Bydar isn't sure if he's flattered by it, or intimidated. Perhaps both.
But as he looks at Nanya's vulnerability and his heart goes out She's been very .. no, impossibly brave. I am not sure I wouldn't broken by what she went through if it happened to me. Bydar realizes he knows some amazing people now.
"Well done." Bydar says to her, and quietly "And thank you. Your strength and courage are admirable. I hope to learn from you as well."

Brand Oluffson |

Listening to Christian's words, Brandt adds his own thoughts, While I will always advocate for our security against threats of the unknown, I think we can put off exploring if you all feel that finding out more about these kobolds is important, and we can possibly secure a mine in the process. I don't know how our populace would take an ally of kobolds, but I think if we have an open mind, they will as well.
GM, do we need to 'explore' the map hexes which we know what's there, or are those considered 'explored' enough for us to claim?

Lord Christian D'Elagante |

Besides," she says, with a small grin, "perhaps the kobolds will be interested in joining the kingdom as our newest citizens."
Christian nods slightly at that.
I am very much open to most anything...and I have seen my fair share of mercenaries that do not fit the mold of what one would think of as a person that is paid to fight. That being said...I will keep an open mind but we have to think of the greater picture and what ramifications our choices will have in the future.Christian looks around the room...
Well then if no one has any objections...we are off for the Sootscale Tribe.
He looks to the others...
With no factual intelligence on the tribe that we can trust...if they are still alive, I suggest we prepare for both combat and diplomacy. We need a way to determine the nature of this tribe. My knowledge of Kobolds is limited at best but they are not a very...goodly...race.
He looks to Brand
Do you think you will be able to supplement our food reserves. The Kobolds are not too far away, we should not need more than a day or two worth of rations plus feed for the mounts. I will have room in the wagon but would like to not over burdens us with unnecessary weight.

Sapphira_NPC |

She leans back in her chair, resting her chin upon her chest as she thinks.
"Hmm, what else...I've also considered The Bottomless Well, The Cloak and Stagger, The Crow Bar," she punctuates this last one with a pause and unseen look that emphasizes how tongue-in-cheek it is.
"I also came up with far too long of a list of names that are nothing but off-color innuendos."
Owing to the maps provided, the hexes north of the Tuskwater count as explored.
However, when you venture to particular landmarks, you might find encounters, hazards, or mysteries waiting for you.

Syretia |

As she begins to frantically gather her things, Syretia says, "I'm sorry, I'm trying to document as much as possible and I can't miss another of Lord D'Elegante's speeches. Actually...would it be all right if I interviewed you? Later, I mean, when things are more settled. You don't have to answer right now!"
Taking another look at the sheer amount of the documents and other materials she has spread out over the table, Syretia gives up and hurries toward the door, with a promise to return later and pick up her mess.
-----------------------------
Syretia looks thoughtful, saying, "Well, I don't think I know anything about the Sootscales in particular, but I do know a few things about kobolds in general."
Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25 I think that's the appropriate skill for kobolds?

Brand Oluffson |

Grimly considering Christian's words, Brandt thinks for a moment before responding. If we move slowly I can likely add to our food stores, but if we travel light and leave the cart here, just on horseback, I think we can make it there in one day, set one day for negotiating and exploring the mines, and one day back. If we bring the cart, our travel will be doubled in time. Just a suggestion is all. Brandt concludes with a confident look.
If we're travelling with no food, we'd need to double again the time, so two days by horse, an' so forth. I can likely sustain myself and one other person easily, but I'd recommend everyone bring what they can and plan to be on the road for five days if we're riding, ten if we're travelling with the cart.
Again, GM, if I'm off on travel times or conditions feel free to correct the timing parts of the statement.

Orlog BrightShield |

"So we are going to visit Kobold now? I though that the previous group had dealt with them already. Well, I'm ready to go when you are. I have rations, torches, and an upgraded armour that I am just itching to try out."

Syretia |

"I have what I expect are about 5 days of travel rations left over from when I first arrived, but I'm sure I can get a hold of more if needed."
While the rest of you have horses (or, in the case of Orlog, a boar!!), Syretia does not. She will, however, cast mount, which at this level lasts long enough for your standard 8 hours of travel per day, plus a long lunch break.

Lord Christian D'Elagante |

Christian looks down at the maps and scans the area between them and the Sootscale tribe.
With a a smile , the young lord looks up at Brand...
You have valid points.
...and then back down at the map. His fingers drawing a line from the capital to the ford and to the tribe.
If we leave first thing in the morning and forgo the wagon....we could be at the ford by early afternoon. These hills will slow us down slightly but barring any unforeseen situations, I do not see why we can not make the ford in good time. We take a break to rest the animals before continuing on towards the Sootscale tribe.
He stands up and looks at the others.
I think we could make it most of the way to the tribe before nightfall. Again if all goes well...we should make the mine before high sun on the second day.
Nodding towards brand
We take five days worth of rations...the hilly terrain should provide amble food for the horses to graze as we travel.
"So we are going to visit Kobold now? I though that the previous group had dealt with them already. Well, I'm ready to go when you are. I have rations, torches, and an upgraded armour that I am just itching to try out."
Christian gives an appreciative smile to the Dwarf.
Master BrightShield...I feel that you will scratch that itch soon enough but we do not know what to expect when we get there. I do not trust the reports we have from our predecessors. We will prepare for every possibility and hope for the best.
DM Vayelan |

Sapphira appears bemused by the notion of being interviewed by Syretia, but otherwise offers no word of impediment to keep her from attending the council meeting.
The roads that have been cleared around your capital will serve well to expedite the first stretch of the journey, somewhat ameliorating the more trackless hill country that cradles the rivers' confluence. Of course, the way markers that have been erected around the river crossing ensure that it would be impossible to lose your way.
Upon horse, whether mundane or magical, one day's travel would carry you from your settlement to the caverns previously inhabited by the Sootscale tribe, leaving you with ample time to explore the caverns before sundown. Likewise, another day's travel would stand between the Sootscale caverns and the purported gold mine marked on the map.
"I've heard a little about them Whitehollow brothers," Narthropple says, idly plucking hairs from his knuckles. "I don't know specifics, but based on their reputation, they won't leave such strategic locations free for the taking."
An uneasy look crosses Lira's face before she also speaks up.
"The Whitehollows cleared out the bandits, the kobolds, the mites, and a slew of other dangers around these parts," she says, a hint of respect for your rivals clear in her voice. "A lot of the folks who've settled under your banner still see them as heroes. You might want to be careful. They might try to exploit their popularity to get an advantage on you."

Syretia |

Syretia chews on her lip, thinking. "Roaming the countryside killing or driving out all of the indigenous residents does not strike me as very heroic. But I take your meaning. Based on Master Narthropple's observation, I think we can likely expect our predecessors to have left traps behind, magical or otherwise, but with Mister Pink occupied by his duties at the inn, I'm unsure of how to deal with any we find."
Or that we don't find until it's too late, she thinks to herself.

Bydar |

He looks troubled at the talk of the kobolds perhaps being victims Is that one of the lessons I'm here to learn? the teachings do say beauty is in the heart not the face always. As for the traps "Unfortunately the best I can think of is throw a lot of sticks and stones ahead of us and hope any traps expend themselves."

Orlog BrightShield |

"I'm afraid I'm in the same situation then Bydar. The only way I can deal with traps is to poke at them with a very long stick and hoe for the best." Thinking for a moment, Orlog looks toward the mass of people. "Maybe someone in there could replace our feathery friend."

Syretia |

"This is a bit...macabre," Syretia says in an uncertain tone, "but if we have no way to disarm a trap, I could summon a pony and have it set the trap off, while we are at a safe distance. It's not a real pony, so nothing would actually die."

Brand Oluffson |

Syretia's right, that is a bit grim, even for me. Brandt looks around the group as he saddles his horse.
I think that us being cautious is good, but we shouldn't be paralyzed by fear. Fenrir can sniff out if there have been humanoids there before us, and I'm pretty good at noticing things, especially if left by humans before.
Adjusting the saddle girth on Skinfaxi, Brandt settles a half full quiver on his mount. I did not realize how well liked the Whitehollow's are and were around these parts. See this is why I wanted a bard, to sing our songs around the people! But seriously we should be mindful that there may be an element which likes them better than us, especially if we're too focused on not keeping the people happy.
Brandt swings himself up on the horse, a massive and imposing figure, even mounted on what amounts to a regular horse, he instinctively calms the horse, whispering to it in his native tongue. Shall we then friends? There is much ground to cover and the sun waits for no one.

Lord Christian D'Elagante |

Well we have some time before we leave...I will take a stroll through town and see if I can locate someone that may be willing to help us out.
Shameful way to insert new character here...lol
