Cool, that gets you through a door.
Any thoughts on a room clearance SOP?

Even though I totally just bucked the order of things with my latest in-game post, my take on an 'exploring rooms' SOP is that it would probably be easiest to largely stick to the same one we've got for doors - with a couple of small changes.
(1) If nothing immediately happens once a door is opened, let the three muscle (Quinn, Bellisir, Gervase) enter first; decide who enters first of those three by random dice-roll. Then Soddy and Boomy enter after the first three, then Annea & Tyndyn last.
The group may or may not want to spread out a bit if the space allows it; depends on if we're worried about being caught in fireball formation.
(2) Once inside the room, roll any 'sekret' Perception checks as necessary if there's anything hiding or there's a trap someone might step on. Otherwise, we can Take 20 to search with Soddy, Bellisir, and Quinn tied for the highest Perception bonus (+9).
(3) Annea scans the place with Detect Magic, starting from the doorway for safety's sake.
Does that make sense? Feel free to suggest changes or other options if I've forgotten something!

Derp. Yes, yes that would make more sense :)

Annea, is your character sheet up-to-date? I didn't see read magic among your prepared spells.

It's New Year's Eve (well, the morning of)! 2019 has been a very good year and I hope it's been equally as good to all of you.
Do I have any resolutions?
Well... ;)
May we all get even cooler in 2020 :)
Annea Clivana

GM Lorenzo- you are right. Was working on a old print copy. When my computer took a dump I lost my character data files and had to resort to pen and paper backups.
I will have Annea check via spellcraft (if it is still necessary).

Happy New Year, guys!

Anybody got a how-to for formatting 'spoilers within spoilers'?
I've forgotten how to do it.
Soddy Daisy
|
| 1 person marked this as a favorite. |
You can format nested spoilers like so:
Aeris dies at the end of Disc 1.
But don't be too sad, she joined the Lifestream and you'll see her again.

______________
You can only give a 'title' to the primary spoiler though; it won't work if you try to title both of them. So for the above I might add something like:
Aeris dies at the end of Disc 1.
Make a Kn. Arcana check. If you exceed DC 20, open the second spoiler below.
But don't be too sad, she joined the Lifestream and you'll see her again.

I'm currently playing the Xbox one port of:
Of course I'm old enough to have played it first time round on the PlayStation :)
Not sure how I feel about the remake. Why mess with a classic?
Soddy Daisy
|
Eh...normally I'm not big on full remakes either (graphical/HD remakes I don't mind so much) but I'm curious to see what they do with it. Given the advancements in graphics and general gameplay since 1997 it could be really awesome if they play their cards right. I just hope they don't radically change the story. Tighten up the translation a bit? Sure. Give certain characters a little more development in addition to the original game material? Yes please! But please no major rewrites.
And I'm also old enough to have played the original on the OG PlayStation :)

The team's SOP doesn't include making a Disable Device check. If one or more of you is trained in that skill, you could add that check to your Door-Opening SOP.
Soddy Daisy
|
I don't think anyone is? Soddy definitely isn't.
GM Lorenzo
|
I think Gervase can attempt the check with a boon from her Faction Card.
Gervase Goldhawkë
|
The way I read the Faction Pin boon, I can only try a trained DD check once per scenario/module.
If you read it differently, GM please let me know.
Soddy Daisy
|
Hey guys, work's been whooping my butt the last day or two. Please bot/delay/autopilot me as you see fit and I'll catch up either later tonight or tomorrow night.
GM Lorenzo

Gervase, the language in the Faction Pin boon seems to limit its use to once per scenario.
GM Lorenzo
|
Because the potions had already been identified, I applied Annea's Spellcraft check to the monocle.
GM Lorenzo
|
Bellisir, Gervase, and Boom Sticks have made stealth checks.
Looks like we're waiting for some similar rolls or other actions from the rest of the team, before we proceed with the rest of the Door/Room Clearing SOP.
If you're otherwise planning to adjust your tactics, please let me know either here or, preferably, in your post in the Gameplay thread.
GM Lorenzo

GM, I don't think anyone else agreed with going back to the kitchen? And I certainly prefer not to split the party. It looks like there are reasonable plans for crossing the wine cellar.
When I saw that everyone had positioned their PC icons at the top of the stairs from the kitchen, I figured that's what everyone had decided.
Everybody, please, if you're doing something else, help me understand your intent by being as specific as possible in your post and placing your icon in a corresponding spot on the map.
Boom Sticks
|
So, if I understand it correctly GM, the secret door leads to the blue bordered square in the flooded cellar (next to where it say 'K18'); and the kitchen stairs lead to the flooded cellar in the northeast corner of the map where our tokens are?
Which means that there are no steps from the secret door on the map for this level, only steps from the kitchen entrance.
That's confusing as heck. Where do we put our icons if we're entering from the secret entrance? There doesn't seem to be anywhere on the map we could put them. There also seems to be no point to the secret entrance at all.
Am I wrong? I'm really not sure where our tokens should be if we are using the secret entrance.
GM Lorenzo
|
The map depicts no stairs down from the secret entrance. I placed the blue square there to indicate the location.
The stairs are narrow, permitting one person to move down them at a time. Beyond the in-character discussion, I think Annea is the only PC who stated she was moving into the room. Though she said she's flying up near the ceiling along the north wall, her icon is still placed on the steps from the kitchen.
Until you move into the room, placing the icons near one entrance or the other is fine. As PCs move and when the situation warrants, I'll post again.
Gervase Goldhawkë
|
Yeah, it was the absence of steps from the secret door that confused me, but I think I get it now.
I believe Gervase's initial plan is still viable, and doesn't clash with anything Annea or Bellisir want to do.
Unless there's a strong objection, I'll pause for comments for a few hours and then get an 'advance the story' post up in gameplay.
Soddy Daisy
|
If both the secret entrance and the route from the kitchen lead to the same place then it seems like it doesn't really matter too much which one we use. Everything stated thus far - Gervase's plan, Annea flying along the ceiling, Bellisir acting as bait if need be - can be enacted from either starting point, based on my understanding of the map layout.
GM Lorenzo
|
If there's anything else that's unclear to anyone, just let me know and I'll try to clarify.
Though not stated in the scenario, let's say there's about 8ft between the water surface and the ceiling of the cellar.

I will wait to post until the others have acted. I am sure the creature will be dead by the time Annea acts! Go BOOMY!

Alas I am not well equipped for underwater action. I need to get myself a potion sponge of touch of the sea.
GM Lorenzo

Soddy Daisy, you can move onto the steps and reach the leech with your longspear. Go ahead and roll your attack.
Annea is levitating somewhere along the north wall, but her icon is still stuck on the stairs on the map.

GM, do I have this right? The shrine level is only 2 feet lower than where Boomy now stands? Thinking of dropping down there. Acrobatics DC, if any?
That's the only specific mention of the room's dimensions.
Leaping over the rails and avoiding the demon's bile-infused webs add to complexity of the obstacle. No DCs were listed, but now that you ask, let's take a look.
High jump over a 3ft rail: DC12, or DC24 without a 10ft running start; +5 Severely Obstructed (cavern, rubble, or in this case webs). DC17 or DC29.
Creatures with a base land speed below 30ft receive a –4 racial bonus on Acrobatics checks made to jump for every 10 feet of their speed below 30ft.

Thanks GM.
Since it's a 3' railing, climbing the railing then dropping 5' on the other side seems easier. All assuming I pass the save against the grease :)
Gervase Goldhawkë
|
GM Lorenzo, just checking how you rule 5' steps in and out of grease.
Most GMs I've played with have ruled stepping IN to the grease attracts the acro check, but 5' stepping OUT of the grease onto firm ground does not.
How do you rule it?
GM Lorenzo
|
I can't find anything official that rules one way or the other. And I can't recall this issue coming up in any games I've been involved with, so I don't have any personal experience with it, either.
On the other hand, the Paizo boards are full of impassioned arguments for ruling one way or the other.
The description doesn't specifically describe the 10x10ft area of effect as difficult terrain, though there are some similarities. Trying to limit myself to the spell description for grease, I would rule that a PC can make 5ft-step but that a DC10 Acrobatics check is called for.
If anyone can point me to an official clarification, please let me know.

It's good to know a ☆☆☆☆☆ GM goes through the same process I do to ultimately make their own decision.

Sorry for the delay in posting, everyone. Did some travelling yesterday to play Burden of Envy (2E: 1-12). Got back in late and wound up sleeping almost 12 hours on top of that today. Not really much Bellisir can do at this point other than to hold action and stay out of the way.

GM Lorenzo,
With your recent IT difficulties (condolences) do you need a hand preparing Chronicles?
I have the module (and am looking forward to finally reading it!)
Let me know!
