That...sounds eerily similar to my goal. Daerokh was built with the axe-musket in mind. It is the dwarfiest of firearms (apart from the warhammer-musket, but that sucks)!

I wasn't planning on getting a Gun at all. With Scent I feel like the smell of gunpowder so close all the time would be overwhelming.

Indeed.

It's a weapon that came about when one enterprising dwarf thought "Y'know, I love chopping up goblins, and I love shooting them, but I don't want to have to put down my axe."

I love witches because their spell list is super fun; you really have to work with what you have and it's exciting. There are a lot of weird hexes that never see use so I'm hoping to grab some down the line (maybe even use Ritual Hex if its allowed).

I know Dead Magic is a real problem in Alkenstar and the Wastes but I couldn't resist the challenge. Hopefully the weird whip and net proficiencies can provide some assistance early on.

It does seem like a well-balanced party, Joie, I agree. Lots of buff/debuff/support casters, as well. Hopefully I'll keep up my end of the bargain, both combat and social-wise.

Whip & Net can be very useful if utilized properly. Knocking enemies prone/hampering movement is a great battlefield control tactic.

As for gun weapons, if there was ever a setting to get one it's this one. I will probably keep mine separate, if only because a rapier gun would probably fire BB's.

How do these strange magic areas interact with Supernatural and Extraordinary abilities. I would assume the Ex ones are unaffected but what about the Su?

From what I gather Dead Magic zones work exactly like an undispellable Antimagic Field.

Primal Zones have a 50% chance to trigger an event if a Spell or Spell-like is used (but you can attempt to suppress it with a concentration check).

I don't believe Su trigger Primal Magic unless there's something wacky in play.

I don't think Alorea will ever use a gun. She's built to be more of a support character than a straight-up damage dealer. I'm not sure if it's worth it using a feat to gain proficiency.

Joie will eventually get a gun, but focus will be more on taking other people's guns.

Something I was wondering, should we maybe establish if any of us know each other prior to the start of the campaign? Like, Joie, for example, you're from Nex, a place Daerokh's gone in the past with his father's caravan. Maybe we've met in the past?

It’s a good idea! Jumpstarts synergy that way.

Depends on how far in the past you might have been caravanning. Joie lived in Taldor up until a year or two ago. Although, if your caravan days are a few years behind you, it’s possible they met in Taldor instead.

That's a great idea!
If anyone has been in Smokeside, legally or otherwise and has possibly been injured, I would love to have some connection there.

Haven't thought too much about his background in depth but I've liked the idea that he was stuck there his whole life.

Jase has been living in Smokeside for several months after having been in Cloudreaver Keep with his parents for all his life. Never been out of Alkenstar. I doubt he’s stirred up much trouble, but anyone fond of alcohol could definitely have run into him at a tavern or bar. Alternatively, he has worked at the Gunworks for short periods of time, for those with a gunsmithing background.

That obligation certainly would seem like a challenge that Jase would be all too willing to indulge in. Probably not a regular camaraderie, since Jase mainly hangs out with folks his age with a bend towards idealism (and accomplishing little to none with it), but enough for recognition between the two.

Didn't intend to leave you all discussing connections alone. It's been a crazy week getting adjusted to the new work schedule and a busy weekend.

As far as Faithe goes I've left the amount of time she'd been around rather vague but I imagine it's been long enough for her to have met/heard of/been heard of by all of you. If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears.

Well considering she helps those in the community perhaps we've bumped into each other once or twice, there is always plenty of hurt going around in Alkenstar.

Also living in Smokeside, Jase might have met Tuco in passing, but probably would appeal to the witch very little before some character development. He's full of idealism and has absolutely no idea how to channel it into something useful, or else drunk and even less productive.

As for Faithe, I imagine the same thing. She seems like a very serious person, and Jase is either drunk with friends, or else talking politics or something of that nature (if he's not working to pay off debts).

As a private investigator, Alorea has probably at least heard of each of you. She usually keeps to herself, though, so wouldn't really be friends with anybody unless you hired her in the past.

This is how I imagine Alorea looks, though with steampunk garb rather than an Osirion styled outfit.

Before I go too far, I think now would be a good time to hash out where each PC lives in the city.

Here's a list of neighborhoods, along with a brief description of how nice they are.

Skyside

Capital District: Easily the wealthiest part of Alkenstar City by far, this district is home to Alkenstar Castle, the Nexian embassy, and Blythir College.

Auburn District: Home to middle-to-upper class citizens of Alkenstar. Has a strong Shieldmarshal presence thanks to the Auburn District precinct of the Shieldmarshals.

Graeson's Fingers: The northeastern part of Skyside is home to many of the city's more respectable engineering and metallurgy guilds. The great elevators of Graeson's Fingers lead to Alkenstar's Undercity and to the bottom of the Hellfallen Cliffs, serving the city as a way for merchant caravans to enter the city.

Smokeside

Ferrous Quarter: This part of Smokeside is a mixture of residential homes and Alkenstar's factories. Housing here tends to be cheap.

Hellside: This part of Smokeside is named for the massive foundries on the bank of the Ustradi River, using the river's flow to power their great machines. The smog here is quite thick, to the point of being nigh-unbreathable on a bad day.

Steamhaven: This district is where Alkenstar's major market for technology and firearms makes its home. There are several neighborhoods here as well, with a Shieldmarshal presence nearby to discourage crime at the marketplace.

Ustradi Heights: This is where Smokeside's well-to-do live. The air quality here is better than anywhere else in Smokeside, but still not as good as that of Skyside. This part of town tends to be where the nouveau riche of Smokeside tend to congregate, lending the neighborhood the nickname of 'the Slumlord District'.

Old Ironside: A walled-in ghetto that formerly was the hub of Alkenstar's firearm manufacture, filled with tenements, shanties and decommissioned factories. With the creation of the Gunworks, this place has fallen into poverty and crime. Shieldmarshals don't go here without sufficient backup.
