Keeping her blade drawn, Sabrine stops singing, her voice ceasing to echo off of the room they are in. ”You see? I am useful.” and she turns to examine the beds, eventually just sitting down on the least rotted one until the party is ready to move forward.

Once Galandram speaks up, she sits up from the bed. ”Yes, lets continue” and she follows Galandram with her blade drawn.

Cei shakes himself out of his fervor and looks around, "Yes, indeed. Sabrine, you were the only one bit by these creatures. Are you hurt badly? I can heal you if you need, but if it is not bad, it may be best to wait for now. This is not likely to be the last of the trouble here." Cei punctuates his point by pushing aside the head of one of the creatures and looking around at the rubble.

Once they are all done looking through the room and Sabrine taken care of as needed, Cei nods to Galendram, "Indded. I am ready when you are."

He is not the first through the door, but does follow not far behind whoever goes, with his shield and mace at the ready.

As they make their to the door to the south, Sabrine lets out a heavy sigh. ”No thank you Cei, I think I am alright for now. I know a bit of healing magic as well.

I am sorry everyone, the confrontation with the Baronness still has me on edge. I don’t quite seem myself right now. Perhaps I can rectify that relationship once we are done exploring this tower. Maybe we can get a noble patron out of it, otherwise I’m sure my father would hire all of you for his diplomatic attachment!”

South we go!

The party opens the door to the south and moves in to what appears to be a cellblock. Numerous jail cells line these long-abandoned corridors. Each of their solid iron doors hangs ajar, and includes both a peephole at eye level, covered with a piece of sliding metal, and a smaller slot for food and water at floor level.

Looking through the peephole into the cell reveals that they contain no living occupants. The northern cells have bones of long since dead occupants, but nothing else of interest.

Ever with the vigilant eye, Galandram does catch something of interest however. A wall which was likely once more difficult to spot but has since decayed and left visible markings that it is hollow unlike all other nearby walls.

As he announces this, Cei starts tapping the wall and finds a similar hollow section of wall on the opposite side of the cellblock in roughly the same location.

Desdemar follows the cellblock to the northwest and finds a closed iron door leading west. Checking the door he finds it is stuck and will likely need a bit of force to open it.

Three possible areas to explore. Desdemar's door will take strength checks to open. Cei and Galandram have hollow walls that will need to attack/break the hollow wall to get through it.

Galandram turns to Sabrine, and looks at her with dark, slightly unsettling eyes. "Lady Basri, even the best person takes a misstep now and then. You are clearly a skilled diplomat and a brave warrior - a rare combination. One introduction cannot change that," he says with a smile that unconsciously betrays an underlying sadness.

After the group heads through the door, Galandram quickly moves through the passage, checking for traps and secret doors. On finding the hollow wall, he calls the group over. "It seems there is a secret passage behind this wall, and perhaps where Cei found as well. I think it would serve us well to take a look. But this," he says, holding up his rapier disdainfully, " . . . well, it's not particularly made for going through stone. And I do not have a pickaxe. Can any of you break through this wall? Or can you lend me a tool, and I will attempt it."

For a moment the air of regality and formality that is always present on Sabrine’s face vanishes, leaving behind it the look of a young twenty something female, lacking confidence in who she is and her place in this world.

”Thank you Galandram,” a thin smile forming on her face. ”but my friends call me Bri; not Lady Basri.”

When Galandram’s calls out to the rest of the group she overs toward him. ”I may not be that strong but I am stronger than I look. Let me give it a try and maybe you or Yngvilda can help.”

After the battle Yngvilda gives everyone a massive grin as she exhults in the moment. "Ha! We did it, great work everyone. And Sabrine!". She runs up to Sabrine and gives her the best bear-hug she can manage with one arm strapped into a heavy shield.

"Are you sure you're not Ulfen? You have the voice of Runveig Redhand, the great battle skald who slew a linnorm just with the power of her song". She stares at her with newfound admiration.

After the rest of the exchanges and moving into the next area she is replaying the battle in her head, at first imagining the creature she slew as the linnorm she will one day defeat to claim her birthright, but her thoughts transform against her will to visions of her father admonishing her for her shield discipline.

Yngvilda, how many times do I have to tell you? Whip your shield back into position after you knock them off balance, do you want them to knock it out of your hand?

She's replaying this memory as she goes through into the next area and is distracted until the calls of the others alert her to the doors.

She moves first to Cei's door which appears to need breaking through. She puts her shield onto her shoulder and her axe through the loop on her belt. "Torag teaches that the action of creation is sacred," She reaches across herself to her left side where a Warhammer hangs from her belt and draws that in both hands. "but that sometimes we must destroy in order to make progress.

If I understand damaging objects correctly she can spend a full round action to line up the attack and get an automatic hit

She draws back with the hammer and brings it down on the hollow wall with both hands.

Yngvilda's warhammer plunges through the thin inch of stone wall and bursts out the other side. Pulling her hammer back she can see nothing but darkness beyond. Cei's darkvision allows him to see a corridor on the other side that extends to the east before turning a corner and heading south out of sight.

A similar situation plays out on the other side as Sabine breaks through the thin wall with an excellently placed strike with her blade. A small corridor extends to the southwest before disappearing out of sight.

Smashing through the fake wall and realizing that she's struggling to see, Yngvilda puts her warhammer away and grabs her trusty shield and handaxe and returns to the group who have lights emanating from their equipment.

"That makes sense Desdemar, they very well might link up. I think we should probably stick together, but I'd be happy to lead the way, could you make this glow the way you did your tankard?" she holds out her handaxe to Desdemar.

While waiting for the others to gather she peers into a northern cell. "What do you make of these cells, could they have been a forgotten prison for the town?"

Yngvilda can't tell much by the corpses other than they have been dead for an extremely long time.

Once Desdemar light's Yngvilda's shield again, she leads the way through Galandram's broken wall. The party travels forty feet to the south with four more empty prison cells on their right. At the end of the corridor it turns ninety degrees to their left and continues for another hundred and twenty feet or so before turning left again. Before turning left, there are four empty prison cells split in the middle by a single closed wooden door. Continuing down the long corridor, it goes about forty feet before it returns to the the other false wall that Cei broke in. Towards the end of this section of hallway the collapse is evident as rubble partially obstructs the end of the corridor.

Now confident that the corridors are indeed linked, a quick inspection of the cells reveal more or less the same thing as the other side. Only the single wooden door stands closed in the center of the room.

"I do not like this, there are an awful lot of cells here. Why would some of them have been sealed off behind such thin walls?" he pauses for a moment, lost in thought, before returning to the matters at hand and gesturing to the wooden door "It seems likely that as this section of the tower was barricaded the room ahead will be empty, but before we go through let me see if anything can be heard beyond that door. It's possible those walls were built to keep something in..."

Desdemar moves quietly to the door and places his ear against it, listening for any sounds beyond.

"Oh, gods, Oh gods! Is someone there? Thank the kind faces of Aroden, bless you, noble souls! I ain't seen the jailers in ages, I think they forgot about us! When the door opens, it reveals a long narrow 50' corridor with a metallic contraption of gears and chains at the end. A large lever extends out at a forty-five-degree angle from the front of it. "I wonder, what are the chances that this room is responsible for the collapse and the carnage outside? Whilst I'm as curious as the rest of you as to whatever this is but..." his minds wanders as he studies the contraption and attempts to determine its purpose

Probably not the right skill, but the only remotely relevant one he has

Eldon walks up to the creature(s), stopping 10 ft away. Then asks in an unusually calm voice.

[b]"Galadnram? do you know if they are intelligent?"

Unfortunately Desdemar does not recognize the device as magical but instead mechanical. Perhaps if he had studied engineering he may be able to glean some useful information.

The elementals ahead of the group do not react to Eldon's presence as he moves closer.

@GM Shadowlord: With the Knowledge (Planes) roll Galandram did, would he have a sense of how intelligent this type of Lightning Elemental likely is (animal int vs. understands speech vs. human int vs. genius+)?

Cei also approaches, slowly, staying close behind Eldon. "Be careful. I doubt we want to anger this creature if it can be avoided. We may even want to avoid all of this for now, having no idea what this machinery does." Cei looks around nervously, "It very well could have been the cause of the collapse, and might do more damage should we activate it again."

Galandram knows that elements [ic]can speak[/i], but they are apt to react instinctively and impulsively. Most likely the issue at hand is a language barrier as they speak auran, not common.

Sabrine looks around the room and at her companions. ”I am with Cei, I personally do not want to be caught in another collapse if this thing is the reason. Best we leave it alone unless we are prepared to deal with the consequences should one of us pull that lever.”

She grips her blade tighter just in case getting to close to the elemental causes it to attack.

"Oh that's a good point, I wouldn't want to be responsible for another collapse." She flushes red slightly, embarrassed.

"Let's return to the stuck door, perhaps whatever lies beyond it can help explain this lever and its strange guards"

TG1 | GW | FF | RH

Deciding it is best to leave it for now, the group slowly backs out and makes it way to the stuck door.

Throwing her shoulder into the door, Yngvilda easily knocks the door open. Looking inside, there can be little doubt what purpose this chamber once served. The dank room stores an ancient rack, a fanciful brazen bull, an iron maiden, a cauldron, iron chairs with sharp edges and cruel protuberances, and a wooden table upon which sit various implements of torture. A bronze plaque affixed to the western wall depicts a crowing rooster above crossed spears. Underneath the spear, a short phrase is inscribed.

As Yngvilda steps into the room, she sees that the inscription under the spear reads, Confession Cleanses the Soul—Pain Clarifies the Mind. At that moment a raven appears in the room, perched on the iron maiden. "Greetings, fine citizens of our glorious empire! So good to have visitors, though I fear I have no refreshments to offer. I assume you are here for the treasure. Well, I’d be happy to assist, provided that you give me what I require! It has been so long since I was able to ply my trade. I require only that each of you shed your life’s blood in this room—simply take a seat in one of my lovely chairs." The raven squawks

Yngvilda (and anyone else entering the room) - Make a DC15 will save to resist the urge to follow the suggestion to sit in the chair. Failure means you take 1d4 ⇒ 3 of damage from the spikes in the iron chair.

Yngvilda steps into the room, gives a start upon seeing the Raven appear, and begins to sit down in the torture chair before catching herself.

"Wait what, why am I.."

She catches herself before she does herself any damage and calls out a warning to the others

"Careful friends, I almost did what this thing said, there is witchcraft afoot here"

Then turning to the creature she raises her axe and shouts at it

"We came here to find out why the tower collapsed, not for any treasure, and you'll help us or I'll smash you and everything in this room to dust!"

Galandram gives Sabrine a small smile at her reference to his immunity to sleep spells.

"Eldon, elementals are somewhat intelligent and can speak. The problem with this one is I don't speak Auran. So unless it knows a phrase or two in Taldane, we're going to have trouble talking with it," the elf replies. "And I agree, perhaps it is best we leave this place for now. I suspect that this guardian has been here a long time, and will not be moving soon."

Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Galandram following Yngvilda into the room and, at the raven's words, feels an immediate compulsion to sit in one of the chairs. With a strong mental effort, however, he is able to shrug off the compulsion.

"I'll pass on the chair and keep my blood, if it's all right," he says dryly. Turning to anyone still in the hallway, he says, "As Yngvilda said, there is foul magic at play in here."

Assuming the raven does not attack, he will look around the room. Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Following Yngvilda when she leaves the room and knocks the door down, Sabrine only has a moment to take in the gruesome room before when the crow speaks.

Sabrine, her eyes grey over as she wanders directly onto the chair to sit down. As the spikes penetrate her flesh, her eyes sudddenly come back to her as she screams at the top of her lungs.

”AHHH!!! Please somebody help me!” She screams as she pulls, trying to escape the torture chair, the spikes only digging into her further as she does so. ”OWW, why in the world would I sit in the chair? Stupid bird! Sabrine curses as she begins sobbing.
