Hlaush cocks their head and says, "I know not what you mean. The old mind rarely speaks when directly spoken to."

When Bravo asked about the safety of directly communing with the Old Mind, Set said, ”This one thinks it is not. Would it not be most efficient to simply ask to be taken to the ‘stranger’s’ underwater base? Or are their organic rituals of discourse this one is overlooking again? An exchange of alcoholic beverages and/or bodily fluids?” It paused to look at the Karang. ”Hmm. That may not be practical between the water and armor.”

"I have a few questions /can't quite put it in words." Soundbyte intoned, before offering Hlaush his hand. "Allow me to demonstrate."

Hlaush extends their hand, albeit somewhat cautiously.

Soundbyte allows the images from his mind's eye to flow into their own. A star in the midst of the void of space with a feeling of awe and love. The imaged craned, and a small blue orb came into focus. As it gree larger in size Hlaush would be filled with the instinctual knowledge, this was their home. Their world.

The images flashed and blinked, showing snapshots of their world. The three islands in each of their splendors from the barren isle to the sight of a strsnge structure. Questions would rise within his mind; Who built this, when did it arrise, where dis it's creator's go? Hlaush would know that this is what thr metal man desired answers to.

The images stopped, and the missionary stepped away to let the native come to grips with what they've witnessed.

Bravo watches the "discussion" with a look of concern on his face.

Weird, didn’t get an update that Soundbyte has posted. I’ve been awake for all of nine minutes so I’ll get a post up once I’m properly moving.

Fragments of the First Battle Maps | Old and Broken Battle Maps | Twilight of the Heroic Age Battle Maps |

Hlaush reels with the telepathic imagery, "How do you carry that power. Are you...are you an old mind?" Their voice trails off as they say with reverence, "The voice that walks! Have you come as promised?"

The iris of Set's oculus spiraled wide open as it stared at Hlaush and Soundbyte. It was both surprised by the development and alarmed. Impersonation of deific or prophesized figures could be dangerous.

Male Human Soldier (Starfinder Forerunner) 4 | SP 28/28 HP 32/32 RP 5/5 | EAC 13 KAC 16; Tch 11; FF 11/14 | F +4; R +4; W +4 | Speed 25 ft. | Init +3 | Perc +4

Bravo's eyes widen.

"Uh-oh," he says quietly in Common to the others. "Think we just stepped in a prophecy. This mission just got a lot more complicated."

Soundbyte holds up a single hand, and speaks in the low soothing tones of his preacher. "Be at peace my child /I am but a humble servant of her Mistress's light. /I serve the Goddess Seranrae, the Dawnflower, praise be to her holy light."

He then holds his hand out flat, and wills his inner faith to manifest a small glowing figurine to represent his goddess. "The power I wield is a gift bestowed upon me."

Krizen raises his eyebrows and eyes the SRO sidelong. "Well, he's definitely a Voice that walks... They got that much right. Though I agree that prophecies complicate... well, everything." Krizen is equally circumspect, speaking quietly in Common as well.

Hlauth's six shoulders slump in dissapointment, "You hold a goddess in your hands? Your power must be mighty."

"Perhaps yes, perhaps no." He commented back, using an entirely different voice as usual.

Hlaush nods, "There is much to be learned of the strangers. So, you wished to know about the trading spire on the island above. It is neutral ground between the cities of this area. We use it when we wish to trade with each other, leaving goods to exchange."

Male SRO Mystic (Solar Disciple) 4 | SP: 28/28 ; HP: 21/21 ; RP: 7/7 | EAC: 17; KAC: 19; CMAC 27 | Fort: +2, Ref: +2, Will: +8 | Init: +1 | Perception: +13; Darkvision | 1st: 3/5 |

Soundbyte grasps his chin, it was interesting information, but potentially irrelevant to their goals at hand. He considers it good fortune to have asked Hlaush instead of proposed it toward the Old Mind. His processor might not've been able to handle that connection without serious damage.

"Captain?" The missionary queries, curious if the shorter SRO had anything else they wished to ask.

Set jolted slightly, looking up, and was relieved to see they weren't about to be spit-roasted over an open fire. Not that there was much meat on an SRO, or one could easily start a fire underwater, but...

"Ah, yes!" It replied with a confidence it didn't quite feel. "A spire on the island? Was it built by the strangers? If so, that may make a more sensible place to check before going to the ruins of their underwater city. That is, if the Karang have no objection to us going there." And, if they do, maybe we just need to find a way to go there without being noticed.

Fragments of the First Battle Maps | Old and Broken Battle Maps | Twilight of the Heroic Age Battle Maps |

I believe the spire that Soundbyte had been referencing was the stone structure on the first island. It's the same one that Hlaush referenced.

Male Human Soldier (Starfinder Forerunner) 4 | SP 28/28 HP 32/32 RP 5/5 | EAC 13 KAC 16; Tch 11; FF 11/14 | F +4; R +4; W +4 | Speed 25 ft. | Init +3 | Perc +4

Bravo shrugs.

"So we going there, Soundbyte? S.E.T.?"

Set shrugged, equally unsure about where they should go or even what was a viable option. It didn't want to offend the Karang.

It looked at Soundbyte at Hlaush, "Is there an interior to the spire that we can explore? And, alternatively, are they willing to take us to the strangers' underwater city?"

Male SRO Mystic (Solar Disciple) 4 | SP: 28/28 ; HP: 21/21 ; RP: 7/7 | EAC: 17; KAC: 19; CMAC 27 | Fort: +2, Ref: +2, Will: +8 | Init: +1 | Perception: +13; Darkvision | 1st: 3/5 |

Soundbyte resumes his role as a translator and relays his captain's questions using his unique flair of speech.

Hlaush nods, ” I can guide you to the edge of the depths, but to venture deeper is taboo.”

Krizen shifts from one foot to another, unsure how to attract Soundbyte's attention before remembering his tecnhopathy node. Soundbyte, can you ask if the taboo is only for themselves or if we would break it too? I'd hate to have to battle our hosts to pursue our mission...

Just want to make sure I’m not missing something. I had thought the structure on the island was more squat than spire-like. (We landed on the island without evidence of a lot of civilization but lots of fauna and flora, if I recall.) If it was larger than just some pile of ruins, it might be worth investigating. Or we could go to the island with all the people first, as I don’t think we’ve been there yet. Or go to the pit. Am I missing something? The one down-side is PvP is it’s easy to lose the track of things over time.

Fragments of the First Battle Maps | Old and Broken Battle Maps | Twilight of the Heroic Age Battle Maps |

The structure was basically a monolith used to signify a trading post. I don't think I mentioned an island with people.

Ooooooh! Wow. I am going to have to go back and re-read. I thought there were three islands: one populated and with structures, one without people but with flora/fauna, and then a barren island. Sorry. I will re-read this in the morning and get better oriented.

Fragments of the First Battle Maps | Old and Broken Battle Maps | Twilight of the Heroic Age Battle Maps |

You were almost right. One had some life with the structure, one was lush with flora and fauna, and one was barren.

Krizen waves a hand at Bravo, a slight gesture, and replies softly. "I'm fine, just letting Soundbyte hold their attention... cooks and kitchens and all that. I think we need to investigate this underwater city, but we must also respect the inhabitants customs."

When Soundbyte translates, Hluash is quiet for a moment, "You may enter the depths. The old mind warns us that only death lies in the dark waters. You may do as you wish though. You are not one of the Karang."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19

The S.E.T. quivers with anticipation but, miraculously, seems to remember itself and the importance of some decorum even in the face of untold booty lost over the ages. "Hlaush, the Old Mind is wise and we will exercise caution. Thank you for sharing the warning with us. While it may have been an accident of your hunting expedition, this one is grateful to have met you."

Soundbyte makes to try and aid his captain even just slightly more by editing his words in key areas, though his impact might be minimal at best. He follows up with words that will never quite be his own, "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."

Male Human Soldier (Starfinder Forerunner) 4 | SP 28/28 HP 32/32 RP 5/5 | EAC 13 KAC 16; Tch 11; FF 11/14 | F +4; R +4; W +4 | Speed 25 ft. | Init +3 | Perc +4

Alrighty then, where to?

I agree that we should take STEVE back to the Dream, sleep, and then go directly to the underwater city the next morning. That'll be the safest place for us.

Sounds good!

Set looks at its organic compatriots, then thinks of the state of Steve. They'd done some quick repairs on the submersible but, given the lack of poles, invisible or otherwise, Set wasn't confident it would maintain integrity at depth without further repairs.

"Let's head back to our ship, rest and repair, then visit the place of ancient booty tomorrow."

"Roger that."

Bravo takes the lead in returning to STEVE to get it all fired up to return to the surface.

The party makes it back to the ship without any difficulty. Repairing STEVE is fairly easy with the materials provided by the Society, and come morning, the team is ready to head out.

Hlaush meets the party at the edge of the city, and in a few hours the group reaches the edge of a steep marine cliff. The water is dark, the light from the surface quickly tapering off with the depths.

Assuming someone talks to Hlaush, Soundbyte is able to translate the karang's statement, "There, the depths. I must warn you, dark things lurk there. It is long taboo to the karang, but that may not prove an obstacle to you."

Fragments of the First Battle Maps | Old and Broken Battle Maps | Twilight of the Heroic Age Battle Maps |

The party departs Hlaush, waiting as the party fades into darkness.

As the sunlight fades, STEVE's headlights kick in. Pallid crustaceans swim past the party, flinching away from the light. A large school of creatures swims in the distance, only visible thanks to faint red bio-luminescence.

It's about a half hour of travel before the scanner hit on something. A large structure is below the party. No life signs are visible.
