DM Darkvision |

Kentaur, Quinray and Milo turn the bandit on the platform into a human pincushion with Milo's arrow taking the man through an eye. His body slumps over, partially hanging off the platform.
Quinray indicates that he thinks he heard movement of others somewhere through the trees ahead. But everything seems quiet after the arrows stop flying.

Tirnel Stargazer |

Seeing Quinray and the rest move forward Tirnel quickly casts message on the half-elf before he disappears into the cover.
I must say that advancing into unknown dangers seems most ill-advised Quinray. Perhaps we should pull back and face the foe on ground of our choosing versus their familiar camp area. Fight on our terms, not theirs.
Tirnel is ready with a bow shot or daze just in case.

DM Darkvision |

While Milo and Tirnel stay behind seeking cover in the forest, Quinray moves forward followed by Ibram and Kentaur.
Unfortunately, Quinray fails to spot the pit trap beneath him and tumbles 20' down to the bottom taking 4 points of damage.
reflex save to avoid fall: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Luckily, Ibram and Kentaur were just far enough behind Quinray to avoid falling.
DC12 climb check (DC7 with a rope) to make it out of the pit, will take 1 round to climb out.
Ibram and Kentaur are next to the pit. Milo and Tirnel are about 30' back.
The forest is now eerily quiet.
Party action.

Tirnel Stargazer |

Tirnel chuckles to himself mirthlessly, 'Have you ever been in the front?'; better to sound like an ass than be one.....
Getting serious he sighs, Are you OK Quinray; can you make it out?
The elf dolefully moves forward to within 15' of Ibram and Kentaur, trying to take as much cover as he can in the trees; ready to fire an arrow or cast a spell.

How did I do this? Falling into a put. Guess I will let everyone else go forward. I will just lay back

DM Darkvision |

As Quinray reaches the top of the pit the bandits spring their attack, shooting arrows from out of the forest about 30' beyond the pit. The party is caught flatfooted, no dex to AC this round.

DM Darkvision |

Quinray dives behind a tree and keeps his head low. Ibram advances to the side of the pit and hurls a javelin which misses. (The coming round Ibram will be close enough to advance to melee and attack in same round if he wants). Kentaur lets fly a bolt from his crossbow which sticks into a tree near the shoulder of one of the bandits (Kentaur is within channel distance of all his companions, but out of range of bandits). Milo advances close to Tirnel and fires an arrow into a bandit wounding him pretty badly. Tirnel also wounds a bandit to a lesser degree.
The bandits are spread out in a line with about 6'-8' between each of them, and they let fly a particularly effective volley, striking 3 of the 4 party members that are still in the fight. One precisely aimed arrow takes Tirnel in the chest, dropping him immediately unconscious.

Tirnel Stargazer |

Tirnel surveys the field thinking to himself about how to crack this stalemate with the bandit archers. Feeling a harsh sting in his chest he looks down to see an arrow protruding from right around where his heart should be.
Well THIS certainly wasn't part of the plan.... he thinks as he collapses in a heap.

Everybody in battle has cover, if anything the bandits have better cover from prepared ambush spots, if you want your attacks to have a chance to succeed then you are going to expose yourself to return fire.
