I played a Bard based off of the Doctor (10th) from Doctor Who. I think I was 10th level with +24 to Diplomacy, Sense Motive, Bluff and Intimidate.

It was ridiculous being able to declare "42" for my diplomacy rolls. Oh, yeah, that only takes the entire hostile encounter from hostile to indifferent. That's fine. :P

Heh. I don't mind characters like that--after all, Diplomacy doesn't work in combat, with non-intelligent creatures, if your targets can't understand you, or if your opponents intend to cause you harm in the immediate future. That's plenty of situations where it won't work.

And even where it does, it only lasts 1d4 hours; irritated people might come back for revenge if they can find you--unless you're mind blanked you're only ever a discern location away (or lower level spells where appropriate). I think it would be exceedingly rare to find a party that could go around 'diplomancing' at will without serious repercussions at some point during their career. : )

...rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb...

All right, now get over to the gameplay thread. I've got you all back to the house (with the exception of Raj, who I expect will be along shortly), and now it's time to make a decision on what's going to happen.

I will give you the following undertaking: don't consider the size of your group when trying to work out what to do.

Let me give you an example.

A group of four people (standard D&D party size) breaking into a crypt might draw a certain amount of attention. A group of eight would likely draw more attention, except that I won't let that happen. In all things, consider your group to be 'normal' size. Since I am the one who is responsible for the group being so large, I must also shoulder the responsibility for making it work within the confines of the AP.

You should also assume that I am adjusting encounter sizes on the fly to provide an appropriate challenge. The adventure as written has only 10-12 thugs show up at the funeral. I had 20. You can expect the same from the rest of the adventure, so if you only sent a small 'strike team' to the crypt they might find themselves quickly overwhelmed.

Things to do
1. Decide whether or not to visit the crypt tonight.
2. Talk to Father Grimburrow about the crypt in the morning (presuming you don't raid it tonight).
3. Talk to Iona Geryn about access to the Temple archives.
4. Talk to Sheriff Caeller about the actual circumstances surrounding the discovery of Petros Lorrimor's body.
5. Talk to Sheriff Caeller about the investigation into the bloody 'V' on the monument.

You know the Sheriff is awake, and you can go to the crypt now if you want. Otherwise, tell me you want to take a nap for the rest of the night and we'll get started with the new day. I'll even accept the majority opinion from a group vote if I must, but I'd rather some consensus.

One last thing: there are no 'wrong' answers. You know you're going to have to plunder this crypt at some point. Whether you ask Father Grimburrow or not, you'll still make it there in the end; in other words, the path will vary, but the destination will always remain the same.

So feel free to throw caution to the wind and take a chance on either telling the church hierarchy or ignoring them. We'll see what happens either way. : )

Are they back at the house? It reads like they could be in the square. That's cool by me.

I'm actually cool on the group doing it now... If there is combat I'd be helpful (was built to fight) but with Kendra there to assist you've got 8... And hopefully the right mix for any encounter. I've a religious direction in mind for Dragomir... While at this early stage he's a long way from there and could likely do this without breaking character and only bending his atrophied faith, it's one less thing he'd need to repent of later.

I didn't plan it this way but it now works for me. I say go for it.

I may go for a walk and talk with the sheriff. I bought TWO bottles for a reason :) I'm not boasting a high diplomacy but if I got a circumstance bonus for giving him respect earlier and hopefully another from the bottle (different sources can stack) I may be able to do an okay job of getting the Lorrimor info AND still be in the game - if nothing else, keeping the Sheriff busy.

Fate has put the party in this situation where everyone is where they need to be on a night they likely won't be disturbed. Go for it.

Male Human Oracle 2

While Walter would like to be nice and let the Father know, I the player hope that we raid it tonight just to get some raiding in. :)

Heh! I the GM just hope we make a decision. Looks like we're heading in the direction of asking Father Grimburrow for permission, which is cool. That will only delay the raid by a day.

And as for Dragomir, don't worry, I have a reason for him being along on the raid--a reason that will take him in the direction you want to go.

It's all good!

Male Halfling Cleric (Evangelist)/ 2

I don't know, Cyn, it looks like as a group we're leaning towards the no-permission route.

If I've misconstrued something let me know, but I think the count is:

Theron--wants to go tonight
Rose--prefers to not tell church
Karrik--seems to want to go tonight but wants to wait for Raj
Dragomir--seems indifferent

Raj--unknown as of yet, but I assume he wants to break in

Flori--unknown

Walter--wants to tell Grimburrow
Lem--would prefer to tell Grimburrow but isn't dead-set against breaking in (though would rather go to the crypt tomorrow rather than tonight.)

Still, Lem will go if that's what everyone wants. After the coin thing, the RP might be fun as he'll get all preachy :-)

You lot must have had some seriously tortuous DMs/GMs in your time. : )

Besides, that was a grin, not a smile...

A word of warning--eight level 1 PCs make (in my estimation) for an APL3 group, but because you are all rather squishy and have a limited number of hit points, a CR2 or CR3 encounter can cause an awful lot of carnage before it's over--one decent hit and some of the lower HD members of the group could be out for the count.

Plan your tactics accordingly. I gave you the acid, alchemist's fire and oils of command undead for a very, very good reason... ; )

(Okay, now you can worry about the smiling.)

That was mostly my job (and I have a few stories). But I have played under some extremes. One particular DM enjoyed Contingent Delayed Blast Fireballs on his drow (like EVERY drow) to destroy all their magical equipment so we wouldn't get it. He thought it was funny to punish us for looting corpses.

~~~~~~~~~~~
As far as the Crypt goes, Rose would prefer to tell Grimburrow, but doesn't think it's safe to do so yet.
HP:16 | AC:16 ; T:14 ; FF:12 ; CMD:16 | Fort:+3 ; Ref:+6 ; Will:+4 | Init:+4 ; PER:+7
I don't know if Karrik was for or against going. I think he just wanted Raj in on it if a raid was to happen.
Here's my bottom-line. I see this as an either/or - we either raid this place and never tell Grimburrow about it OR we ask permission and we don't touch it until he gives us permission. My logic is this - Even if we can break in successfully, we probably can't cover our tracks well enough that Grimburrow wouldn't find out there was a break-in. If we want to gain his trust, we have to play this totally above-board... which is a risk in that we may not get the equipment we need.
As for Raj... you guys may be delightfully right or decidedly wrong about how I'd vote. :) It depends on which hat I have on.
IF I was playing in a brutally realistic campaign or with a conniving, evil DM I'd say tonight would be the wrong time for a raid. Most of the folks who should be asleep right now are awake. Maybe they are freaked out or worried about what happened with the statue - that means more folks who could potentially see us. We've also got a sheriff roaming around. And whatever we find, we have to carry it back through town with dawn approaching at some point here.
IF this is a more friendly and less stacked-against-the-characters campaign then yeah, I can see the point (and fun) in making the run. It sounds to me, based on what Cyn is saying... that this is closer to what he has going on. So, if you guys are hot to make the raid tonight, I'm down with it. :)
So, I kinda gave you both answers there, didn't I?
