Earth 673X
Superheroes aren't a new concept in the world, and neither are mutants, per se; Captain America fought alongside Namor in World War II. But with the death of Captain America and Namor's return to the sea, the world has all but forgotten them, putting their existence down to urban legends and the Mythification of War.
Still, there've been reports of some guy in a Spider-themed costume flying over Manhattan, people hear about a giant green monster terrorizing the midwest, and no one can deny the odd powers gained by a quarto of adventurers whose space flight exposed them to interstellar radiation. Indeed, people worry about the effects the bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and subsequent power plant and environmental accidents may be having on their children, especially with the rumors of birth defect rates increasing a hundred fold- some even speak in whispers about children born with odd-colored skin, feathers for hair, or even more bizarre mutations.
The new Age of Heroes on Earth 7673X did not start until 1982 with the creation of this world's Fantastic Four. The current year is 1985, and a young Spider-Man made his debut earlier this spring. Avengers? Never heard of them (Captain America may be truly dead, or maybe Loki, Thor, and Asgard are not part of this world.)
Enter the X-Men, teenagers who have suddenly found themselves capable of what no human should be. Confused, maybe afraid, they have been approached by Professor Charles Xavier, a teacher, and a mutant, like them. They have been offered a chance to learn to control these new powers and harness them for the good of all mankind, even those who hate and fear them. They have accepted, and now they are arriving at The Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, a private institute in Westchester County, NY.
