Gecko has 11 hp, and Con 12. Takes 15 hp then takes 8 hp in damage = -23 hp Dead. Compare with: Gecko has 11 hp, and Con 12. Takes 15 hp then takes 2 more lethal damage while also taking 6 nonlethal = -17 hp (dying) and 6 nonlethal. This happens because of instead of slamming into the ground he slams into the slightly softer Garrapata (who takes the same damage in return 2 hp and 6 nonlethal).
GM: Can we say as Standard Operating Procedure, that Alkarion takes 10 for 29 Perception as we enter each room, looking for signs of trouble, traps, etc.? Saves me from having to repeat it every time we open a door. :) Also, he has 60' of Darkvision, so he'll move in to each room behind Raynor and get a look around.
Alkarion follows the knight into the room, and notices the statue. "That's unusual ... Raynor, it seems to like you." He looks back at the rest of the group. "Any of you good at detecting magic?"
That's fine but keep in mind that:
Most Perception checks are reactive [i.e. I often roll for you (taking 10 is fine).], made in response to observable stimulus. Intentionally searching for stimulus [like a trap's trigger] is a move action.
[And]
The DC to notice such details varies depending upon distance, the environment, and how noticeable the detail is.
Also, El Garrapata and Borox are technically the party's normal front line. Obviously you can change that either permanently or temporarily, and at times (like now with Raynor) people can scout ahead while others are doing other things.
Borox walks over to the gecko and after studying it for a bit lays his hand on it and casts the orison stablize on the gecko.
He then attempts to determine if it is alive or not via Perception or Heal (whichever should be used).
If it is alive, I will begin to heal it.
It's alive.

Borox smiles. "I think I know someone who might be a wee bit surprised to be a'seeing' ye, beastie. Now let's get ye back on yer sticky feet."
Borox pulls out his Wand of Cure Light Wounds and begins to use it on the gecko.
Wand of CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Wand of CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Wand of CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
"Come on, ye beastie. Let's get up with the others now."
He puts the wand away and grips his greatsword in his hands. And let's be a'gettin' to work."

And z-plan is?

![]() |

I believe I said I was examining the statue ... did that turn anything up? If not, we should probably advance to the next door.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

The party moves forward with Borox pulling the gecko ahead with him. Prof. Alkarion draws nearer to the statue to get a better look it.
The witch watches Raynor, then turns its gaze on the Professor. An inhuman wolfish smile spreads upon her face. Suddenly she lunges forward at the Wayang! Disappearing like smoke just as it is about to strike.

And pass up a perfectly good Garrapata rump streak or large gecko haunch with a mere 5-foot-step?

Oh, I misread the effect. Yes, he would go for the fresh stuff!
Seeing Garrapata fall to the ground, Alkarion stops next to him and tries to hack off a hunk.

Kaillum cautiously proceeds with the group. He watches the wolf lunge than go *poof* in a puff of smoke. He catches himself yawning, but rubs his eyes as he watches everyone begin to slump over in a heap.
His mouth drops open as he watches his ally’s mouth start to salivate as he rushes over to the corpse and start to devour its flesh. He stifles down the vomit trying to escape his stomach. He rushes over and wakes up the snoring giant in hopes he can help restrain the mad and crazed ally. El Gar

We should make this official.
Borox: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Prof. Alkarion: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Kaillum: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Raynor: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Raynor's gecko falls off the ceiling, Raynor though lands on his feet and out from under his falling mount. Just for the record, remember that detect evil requires concentration.
Spell Duration: Concentration The spell lasts as long as you concentrate on it. Concentrating to maintain a spell is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Anything that could break your concentration when casting a spell can also break your concentration while you’re maintaining one, causing the spell to end.
And that moving mounts count as vigorous motion (triggering a concentration check [DC 10 + spell level]) and galloping mounts count as violent motion (concentration check [DC 15 + spell level]).
Kaillum wakes El Garrapata. Meaning the Professor chooses a new meal. Gecko looks good. *Nom, Nom, Nom, Nom!*
nonlethal gnawing damage v helpless gecko: 1d2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

I understand the PFS PvP limitations, but I would like to request permission to trip the Prof. to the ground as an AoO before he starts to gnaw on the lizard - as indicated in my post above, I was standing over the gecko to defend him; also: I was on the ground, not on the ceiling, and I detected evil a second time after the gecko fell asleep, only towards the east this time.
Raynor sees the Prof. approach his lizard with mad look in his eyes and knife drawn.
AoO trip at reach with lance vs. Prof. CMD 17; lance +1: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 9 + 1 = 19
If this works and the Prof. is prone, Raynor takes a standard action to wake up his lizard, and attempts a quick mount:

Stopping a dominated PC from hurting another isn't PvP, it's just common courtesy. ;-) Please do what you can to keep me from eating my party members or their animals, no matter how appetizing they may be!

I didn't see a post that said Raynor had "unflipped", but that's fine.
Raynor trips the maddened wayang before he can munch the savory giant gecko and mounts up again.

You're totally right - I forgot to unflip. In any event the gecko is prone as he fell asleep, and I'm assuming they can't sleep upside down.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Sorry to rush, but because I have to report this game in 4 days I'm going to assume that with an upright Garrapata that you can restrain the professor for the 7 or 8 rounds it takes for him to regain his senses and that in that time someone wakes up Borox. This long, high-ceilinged (30 ft) hall is partially flooded with murky, stagnant, scum-covered water. The sound of slowly dripping water echoes ominously throughout. A massive banyan tree has breached a large section of the south wall, and the tree’s enormous invasive roots now extend several feet into the hall. Long sheets of thick moss and other detritus cling to the twisted tree roots, forming a curtain-like barrier.
The room is lit eerily from without by tall slits cut into the spire's walls.
The western half of the room is flooded with about 3 feet of dirty standing water (difficult terrain, or a Swim check DC 10, if you are Small-sized it is automatically a Swim check), and where the room narrows, the floor gradually slopes up from west to east, leaving the eastern half dry. The roots of the intrusive banyan tree cover roughly a 40-foot by 15-foot patch of wall, and stretch up to 15 feet across the room. The roots are slick but sturdy enough to climb (Climb DC 15).

Alkarion's ears perk up, and he holds up a hand. Speaking quietly, he tells everyone, "I hear a faint, rhythmic chanting coming from the the other side ... I can't make out words, just that there a lot of people murmuring together something. Advance with caution!"
Once the front-liners are in, Alkarion will crawl along the wall (thanks Garrapata and Borox!) to avoid the water.

![]() |

Raynor takes point with Mozza, shining lance leading the way while sticking on the west wall.

![]() |

"Huh? What happened? I fell asleep? Damn magic traps!"
"This place is an obstacle course."
Borox takes a firm grip on his greatsword and slides into the murky water. He makes his way to the roots. He double moves to where he is now.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

I gotta back you up a bit. My last edit didn't seem to take, so let me add this to what the Prof. notices:
Spread throughout the murky water there are thousands of leaches, and in the water at the base of the tree there are two in particular that must weigh in excess of 100 lbs each.
Also don't worry about the game timing just now, we'll finish when we finish.

![]() |

Thank you for that additional bit of knowledge because that is going to change what I do. I am NOT going into the water after all, at least not on purpose or willingly.
Not sure what to do here. My climb skill is -2 as is my ride skill. If any of us go in the water, I am certain the leeches will attack. I have a Summon Monster II spell which is the only spell I have that might be able to summon something to help out here, but I don't think an air elemental is going to be able to carry me. The other choice is to summon an octopus or squid, and use it to draw the leeches away while those of us who have to go into the water make a dash for the other side. Suggestions?

![]() |

"Oh my, that water is just swarming with leeches ... Raynor, if I gave Mozza a potion to increase her strength, could you ferry people over along the wall?"
I have a potion of Ant Haul that would triple her carrying capacity for an hour. That should let her carry an extra person while you hold them into the saddle. What do you think?

![]() |

"Mozza needs no potion! I've seen him carry 700 pounds' worth of sandbags up a 90-foot cliff once!"
Raynor and Mozza ferry people back and forth beyond the wet area. When everyone's on the other side he sees if he can spear the big leeches out of the water...

![]() |

"Aye, laddie. I be acceptin' a ride o' yer lizard as well. Them leeches look hungry. Maybe we coulda tossed them a cannibal or two to distract 'em, but we ain't got none o' them...yet!"

The World's Most Interesting GM |

With a few trips party makes their way over and around the walls on geckos avoiding the leech-filled water.
Borox: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Prof. Alkarion: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
Kaillum: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
Raynor: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
While passing along the walls Kaillum and Prof. Alkarion both spy a soggy bit of leather caged amid the roots of the banyan tree.
Beyond, up a couple of steps on the dry side of the room, is rotting iron bound door. A faint but building chant can be heard from some large echoing space beyond it. The chant is nonsense, or a name, or magic pronounced over and over Rajhan-Vol, Rajhan-Vol.

![]() |

"Ho there, that looks like something!"
Alkario makes his way up the wall, across the ceiling toward the tree.
If he can reach it from the ceiling or wall, he will simply take the leather; if not, he will lower his grappling hook on a rope and try to fish it out of wherever it is.
Also, remember that Alkarion has the Elixir of Vision bonus, so his perception is +19 (the value in the parentheses in his header). It didn't matter for this roll, but it could for a future one.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Yeah status effects have a very short shelf-life in my memory pantry (most folks have palaces).
By climbing along the trunk of the tree you can hook the bit of soggy leather and pull it up safely. Feel free to unspoil that spoiler above.
While we're at it, just in case I can get Game Day Boons for this table, everyone give me a 1d20 roll.

World's Most Interesting GM's Hall 4-5 Boon Roll Raynor Cordite: 1d20 ⇒ 5

Alkarion retrieves the scrap and brings it back to the group.
Spoilered text from above, for convenience:
Within is a a steel amulet without a cord and a watertight scroll tube made of horn containing a scrap of parchment with a hastily scrawled note: “We lost Gavreth, Kehm, and Nars in the Hall of the Flesh Eaters. Before he died, the wizard claimed the horror is a work of necromancy. I know it at least responded to holy water, so that means we should be able to—“ The rest of the note is smeared and illegible.
"Oh my ... "Hall of the Flesh Eaters" .. sounds ominous, though with the cannibals above I guess we shouldn't be too surprised. Necromantic horror, eh ...?" The wayang checks his magical pack and nods. "I have two vials of holy water, anyone else? I also have fire ... most things burn."
With that, he takes a moment to inspect the room ahead, and tries to find the chanting sound he heard earlier.
Boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 5

![]() |

"Hmm... didn't bring holy water this time, but I can infuse my lance with that nice holy balm. It's good for only one strike per application though, so the idea is to make it count!"
Raynor applies the holy weapon balm to his lance and moves forward. "Borox, ride with me if you will," offers Raynor, sliding forward on the exotic saddle to give room to the dwarf. "Just hang on and I'll do the riding. I'll stay on the ground for now, and if I take to the ceiling I'll wait until you've been dropped off safely."

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Borox sheathes his greatsword so he can climb up behind Raynor whereupon he takes a firm grip on the paladin's armor.
"If'n we get the drop on the buggers who be chantin' unholy lyrics, I gotta little spell that'll "light" up their lives!"
Borox begins to laugh as the prospect of a pitched battle with evildoers brings joy to his face.
"Dinnae be worried about droppin' me off safely. If'n all else fails, I'll become a dwarf from the sky n' crash into them!"
