Dammit, the goblins ate my post ...

Alkarion draws his terbutje, a vicious looking club covered in shards of metal and glass, and moves forward as well, keeping his enhanced senses peeled.

"I heard movement up ahead, to the northeast. Be ready for cannibals. And remember to save one for experimentation!"

Raynor still senses evil out there.

The forest explodes with wild inhuman cries and the frenzied sound of beasts breaking cover from the jungle!

Suddenly there are savages nearly in the party's midst! They are Kuru in the flesh this time. Crimson tears of fresh blood streak their faces which are twisted into horrible masks of hunger and insanity.

When your character can actually see one of the savages: Heal (DC 15):
These beings are starving and fatigued.

Conditions
Dim lighting The thick jungle canopy and the mists conspire to darken the area. In an area of dim light, a character can see somewhat. Creatures within this area have concealment (20% miss chance in combat) from those without darkvision or the ability to see in darkness. A creature within an area of dim light can make a Stealth check to conceal itself.

The vapor obscures all sight beyond 20 feet.

Another Kuru falls in the forest... but no one can hear it happening because of all the screaming.

One savage (black) shrouded in a whirling nimbus of visible chaos hurls what sounds like curse in his course tongue. He points at Raynor and the light around the knight seems to dim. His breath catches--first, in a sudden indescribable cold that freezes his sweat-drenched clothing to his skin, and second, when he actually sees his breath come out in a puff of winter mist and realizes that what he is experiencing is real--he is freezing to death!

The Kuru with the madly spinning aura begins to chant out another spell.

Kaillum fires!

forest concealment 30% miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 47

entropic shield 20% miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 16 miss

black cast defensively (combat casting, DC 21): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

El Garrapata gets an AoO vs black.

Forested terrain with heavy undergrowth. (all that dark green stuff)

The vapor obscures all sight beyond 20 feet.

Note about unconscious people Unless they are really big (huge creatures, creatures whose volume fills the entire space, like gelatinous cubes) downed creatures don't even count as difficult terrain. So walk all over them.

OK, since Orange went down, Alkarion would instead have taken a double move through the undergrowth; this round he makes another double move to reach Blue. I have indicated his path in white for last round and yellow for this round. He would not have maintained his rage, so he was fatigued last round and this, and will recover from the fatigue next round.

Watching the group quickly dispatch the cannibals, Alkarion breathes heavily as his muscles return to normal. He pushes through the bushes to reach the last one and stands over him with the wicked club, saying "I believe we have you finished. Would you care to surrender, or shall I simply kill you now?"

END COMBAT

Beyond the foliage the party finds a crude, weeks-old camp. Amid the detritus, on a litter lays a Kuru man.

Prof. Alkarion wrote:

The Kuru lays there unresponsive except for his eyes, ringed in moats of blood, which stare up at Alkarion.

sense motive (DC 15):
The stare is... inhuman. In fact it is totally malignant and alien. Nothing that walks on two legs could look at you like this. Whatever mind is guiding or housed in this Kuru's body it is as divorced from humanoid kind as you are from sea krill. What you see before you is mere puppetry. The body is only alive physically and the mind that is looking through those eyes is monstrous, is something that is altogether beyond the pale.

Upon your character realizing this, the edges of its mouth slide upward in the parody of a smile, more blood wells from its tear ducts and runs down its face.

Scattered about the camp lay little bits of bric-a-brac, clumps of strange silver jewelry like metal lace not at all similar to the leather and bone jewelry the Kuru are wearing.

Looking at the helpless Kuru and the evil inside stuns the paladin. He drops his Lance looks pained.

Raynor looses concentration on the spell.

Alkarion looks into the kuru's eyes. After staring a few moments, he says, "I've never seen anything like this ... the body is human, but whatever is moving it around is not. Either this is some alien creature shaped to look human, or he is possessed by something. Either way, it might be best to end its existence. Does anyone disagree?"

The Kuru lays unmoving except for the eyes which lock on Raynor's, and a slight tugging upward at the corners of the mouth.

Raynor coup de graces the kuru to death with one thrust. It dies and you daze a CR 23 "thing" somewhere on this plane that knows what you all look like now. It even has a name to think about--the name of 'Garrapata'.

After a while.

Following the path pointed put by the camp's horrible scarecrow (which El Garrapata discovered) the party comes to a crack in the earth. Most of it covered by thick weeds and the roots of a huge strangler fig tree. There are several gaps between the roots through which an adventurer might squeeze. Below the tangled roots is a deep shaft that descends into the gloom.

Map Updated.

The thirty-foot-long, root-covered crack extends deep into the black stone of the Gloomspire. Numerous gnarled tree roots creep down the sides of the shaft, a few of them hanging almost to the muddy floor 40' below.

Dozens of shallow niches are set at irregular intervals down each of the four walls of the shaft. Though some are empty, most of the recesses hold squat, four-foot-tall stone idols of leering, horned fiends.

The strangler fig’s entangling roots lace the insides of the crevasse like cobwebs.

DC 15 to free climb the crack. Using a rope in the confines is a DC 5--knotting a rope won't help any more here. The crack extends 30' deep. Then the crack opens into a stone ceiling 10' above the floor. So a total of a 40' drop.

A Medium creature can easily squeeze past the roots at the top of the crack, and a Small creature simply treats the opening as difficult terrain. Large creatures will have to clear some of the roots first.

The lighting remains dim throughout the area.

GM, would either acid or alchemist's fire assist in the clearing? I'm not sure how much effort it is or how long it will take to make the opening big enough.
