Annoyed, Uori snatches the damp sheets from Hayden's hand. He produces a large, glass lense that was once the bottom of a bottle, and reads the papers through it. He ocassionally glances up at the party, possibly disappointed to find them all alive and well. "Well, that is something, I suppose."

After a thirty minutes and number of dead ends, rubble-choked passages, and cul-de-sacs the narrow, bluish-fungi-lit main tunnel broadens to reveal a shallow river that bisects an immense tunnel stretching to the north and south. To the east a small passage exits the chamber at a steep upward incline.

Furtive shapes slink about the far side of the cavern. Three are humanoids, one is a sort of crawling snake-like thing.

The cavern stream is slow moving, a foot deep, and treated as a shallow bog for movement purposes.[ooc]

Three of the creatures, the humanoid ones, appear to be mites! Small, 2-foot-tall, wizened, blue fey creatures descended (and if you are a gnome this sort of sickens you to say) in much the same way as gnomes. They are the descendants of smaller, prettier, and more powerful First World beings. Life on this world has twisted them for the worse giving them huge, ugly pumpkin heads and tiny little bodies. In the Darklands, they rank less than kobolds, and survive by skulking about out of the way of larger monsters. They congregate in groups for safety but are dangerously mischievous, sadistic, and insane by normal surface-dweller standards.

If you beat the above and are a gnome:
Mite's hate gnomes, the way dwarves hate orcs. It must be jealousy.

knowledge (nature, the three humanoids) DC 15+:
Mites can see in the dark quite well, and have a highly developed sense of smell, but are not well adapted to bright light. They can clamber over almost anything.

knowledge (nature, the three humanoids) DC 20+:
As creatures of the fey, they have a number of minor magical abilities (akin to prestidigitation at will). Once a day they can influence a person's luck to the bad with a kind of 'evil eye' (like the spell doom). They also have a sort of affinity for insectile vermin, and any gathering of mites is sure to have a few giant varieties around as pets, guards, or mounts.

knowledge (nature, the three humanoids) DC 25+:
Despite their relatively weak frames, they are slightly resistant to damage like madcap puppets in a Punch-and-Judy show. Only cold iron seems to harm them consistently.

With all of its legs this sort of insect can climb very quickly, and seems to never be tripped up!

Many are quite poisonous. This one for instance has a bite that causes eventual paralysis of the limbs, allowing it to incapacitate their prey for easier consumption.

The light-bearer, Hengistbot moves forward allowing Balgrym to once again spearhead the group's diplomatic efforts.

Surprised, the mites shriek and clamber up the eastern wall like awkward spiders. They draw ugly-looking darts and prepare them to throw.

They all shout competing snatches of gibberish down at the centipede, while clanging their darts.

That sounds a bit more like intimidation than diplomacy--at least the way the skills are described. What specific sub-ability/effect are you attempting? Note there are time constraints to some actions. Most negotiation-like effects take a minute (10 rounds), or more to accomplish.

You're right, Intimidate fits better. I'm really just trying to get them to leave--call it an attempt to demoralize one if that works best for you. The roll is the same, mechanically, for Hengist.

If that's what you'd like. And actually half-orcs normally get a +2 racial bonus to intimidate attempts.

The dwarf's approach triggers a whole slew of actions.

The centipede moves in close to the dwarf as he emerges from the mud, and goes to bite him triggering Sir Hayden to loose his arrow. Killing the beast in one go.

"MHARAIGH SIAD FLUFFY!" Shrieks one mite.

"THEY KILLED FLUFFY!"

"TÚ BASTARDS!" Shouts another pointing an accusatory finger at the party.

"KILL AN DÚR SAILL GNOME!" Yell the third.

Ready for the invaders' violent approach the mites let fly with their darts at Balgrym.

Balgrym and Hayden fire warning shots(?) at the stone walls around the mites, who continue cursing and tossing their barbed darts at Balgrym. They score another awkward to reach hit, this time upon his shoulder.

Karayan, just a heads up, the crossbow you found did not come with any bolts. You might have to bum them off of someone else, or perhaps toss it as an improvised weapon. That sort of attack always made George Reeves duck.
