Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Hearing somebody shuffling about above her, Cala quickly looks up and scans the stairwell. Waving her right hand towards herself, Cala motions for Aereth and Talon to approach her while using her left hand to point upwards.
In voice loud enough that they can hear her, but not yelling, Cala speaks urgently "It's the Warden, above us. Careful, he's clearly a capable magician."
While waiting for Aereth and Talon, Calawhen reloads her crossbow.
Cala will delay until either or both Talon and Aereth go ahead of her. Her defense is far to lousy to be the first up the stairs.

I'm going to prepare my move to counterspell if i can
counterspell, that's cool! I don't use that enough. However, the other guy is quite a way removed from you, so I'll allow you to move to the point where the balcony meets the stairs, but not onto the stairs; this way you can look up and hopefully see your opponent and identify his spell. Moving onto the stairs would require a 2nd move action and stop you from counterspelling, and that would suck.

Mathias Richter thinks to himself: Hmm, it would seem that the necromancer and the unholy fighter are attempting to pass each other on the stairs. Yeesss, It would be quite prudent to act upon this promising opportunity.
At the exact moment Caladwhen and Aerent are passing eachother on the stairs, you all hear "Globus Ignatus!" from the floor directly above. They quickly turn their faces, just in time to see a great ball of fire roll towards the stairwell at great speed!
I'd like the spell to target the square both Caladwhen and Aerent are in, while Aerent is moving. I don't think this is even remotely appropriate according to the rules, but I think it's more spectacular i.e. fun this way. Hope you don't mind me breaking the rules in my favor, but let me promise you this: if it goes bad because I broke it, I'll fix it.
Aerent, Caladwhen, would you please roll a reflex save vs DC17?
Caladwhen
Reflex: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Well, with 6 HP, this could be ugly. My only thought IB is that Cala is delayed... assuming she has line of sight she could take her action and fire at him before he gets his spell off, forcing a concentration check at the very least? I'm also wondering why he gets an interrupt action when he's lower than Cala and Aerent on the initiative. Not trying to 'rules lawyer' this, just trying to save Cala from baking lol

fair enough, fire away. concentration check:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Also, since you both failed the reflex quite miserably, you two should probably look at the GM notes above now...I won't let that happen though, I promised to fix it ;)
As they look at the incoming ball of fire in fear, Aerent and Caldwhen bump into eachother as they try to get away from the danger. The fireball catches up with them though, and as the spungy substance bumps into them, both wriggle in pain as their skin burns quite badly. Luckily, the ball doesn't hit either of them full on, or this could've been much worse.
Caladwhen damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Aerent damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Caladwhen
It was worth a shot, no pun intended...
Attack roll: 1d20 ⇒ 15
Damage if applicable: 1d8 ⇒ 8
Hold up, that's a great damage roll. If it hits, that might be enough to make him screw up? No wait, scrap that... it's still shy. Damn his good roll!
Caladwhen
Though successful at getting the shot off, concentrating on her aim caused Cala to be a bit slow to react to the ball of fire that fell between Aerent and herself.
Upon feeling the scorching flames, Cala cries out in anguish and does her best to move out of sight from the Warden. Gripping her burnt arm, she looks directly to Talon as he makes his way past her. In her eyes, tears of pain and hostility replaces her normally cool repose. In a panting voice as she tries to catch her breath, Cala speaks in the infernal tongue:
Talon Dalkar
Talon howls a war cry and charges him, launching a ferocious assault and keeping up a battery of blows, hoping not only to defeat him but also to badly disrupt his concentration. If he can he tries to push him back towards a wall
Charge Attack1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 4 + 2 = 21
Damage1d6 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Aerent Sephim
I'm confused - the wizard interrupted Aerent's action, then Caladwhen went, then the wizard cast his spell. So does Aerent get to continue his action and make it to the top of the stairs? And where is the wizard standing? Do we see him?
increddibelly
|
Talon, there's a great ball of fire on the stairs in front of you - acrobatics DC10: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12...but that does not appear to be a problem for you, so never mind!
Cala's brave shot digs deep into the right arm of the wizard, nearly breaking his spell. Yet, somehow, he manages. He starts bleeding like a stuck pig, though.
And then, suddenly Talon is there; He jumps between the two burning villains, over the fireball, and ferociously strikes at the wizard. It's quite impressive the warden can remain standing after the magus' barrage.

Aerent, I agree, it's become a little messy. This sort of improvisation doesn't seem to work as well in a PbP as it does on tabletop :) Your move may end at the top of the stairs, if you so desire. I'll describe the room (22) in a minute.

22. Richter’s Library
This is the warden’s pride and joy – Against every bit of wall of this circular room, a bookcase is placed. Each case holds a collection of books and scrolls across a wide range of subjects.
The floor consists of large slabs of solid stone, and there's a single comfortable chair near a lantern in the northeast corner.
Dimensions are the same as the floor below, except the ceiling isn't so high.
The spiral staircase in the center goes up another floor.
The warden stands 15ft south of the spiral staircase.

Aerent channels his inner anger and charges at the warden, attempting to slay the man where he stands!

Cala, before I anything else; there are a few abbreviated volumes of the "Encyclopediae Arcanae" on the shelves - I'm sure you'll find one that has an interesting selection of spells for you.
Talon, your own spellbook is not here, though.
the library:
The most common items in the library are the “penny dreadfuls”. These poorly printed compilations of lurid tales range across the whole gamut of adventure genres. However, the one genre over-represented is bawdy tales featuring amply endowed young maidens in grave peril.
This collection is of no real value.
In the more scholarly section, there are fifty five books on subjects ranging from magical theory, history and astronomy. Most of these are common books and tomes worth an average of 3 gp and each weighing a
pound.
However, some of them are very valuable:
“Astra Mysterii” A rare treatise on astrology written by the mad monk Clivarus, worth 75 gp.
“The Travels of Titus the Mendicant” by Artus Vellor. A valuable first edition of a popular title published before the author was well known, this book would fetch 120 gp amongst collectors.
“The Floralegium” by Branthus Hart. An imposing tome of no small age, this beautifully illustrated book of flowers is obviously something special. It is worth 250 gp to collectors.

assuming you take a look upstairs, while you're here:
(23) The spiral staircase up ends here at this stone landing. The stairway once continued up to the roof of this tower but now the roof is closed
off. This chamber is lit by a single torch on a sconce. To the north is a door bearing a plaque that reads
“Office” (it opens to room 24). The southern door has a similar plaque
that reads “Private: Keep Out!” (it connects to room 25). It is otherwise empty.
(24) Warden’s Office
This is the Warden’s office. Tastefully adorned in hard wood, the office is dominated by a massive oak desk.
The desk has one locked drawer (secured with an average lock; DC 25).
(25) Warden’s Private Chambers
This is the warden’s well-appointed private bed chambers. There is a fine four poster bed, a full length mirror and an oaken wardrobe. Though the furniture here is of high quality, there is no easy way to get it out. More portable is the Warden’s wardrobe including no less than five noble outfits (worth 375 gp in total). This collection of noble finery is mostly elegant silk robes and could fit most anyone.

Though still in pain from her brush with death, Caladwhen winces and heads up the flight of stairs. Happy to see the Warden's head no longer attached to his body when she reaches the top, a slight grin of satisfaction appears on her face.
"Good work gentlemen."
Moving alongside Talon, Caladwhen observes the book he is flipping through and nods "Indeed, though it's ours now. Nevertheless, the Warden was in possession of an impressive Library, save for all the bawdy tales." Giving her eyes a roll, Cala muses with Talon "He was a dirty little man as it turns out."
Slithering down the isle whiles running her index finger along the volumes, Caladwhen stops and pulls a book off the shelf, reading the title aloud "The Travels of Titus the Mendicant. Some of these books have value. This one is worth at least 100g."
Finally making her way into the Warden's quarters, Cala quickly looks over his possessions, identifying all but one of the scrolls. "It's illusion magic of some kind, which I never favored."

Talon takes a moment to look at the scroll only to react much the same as Caladwhen "I agree, never cared much for illusions." However, he tucks the scroll away anyways "Lets see if we can get it identified, if nothing else it will be worth something"
Talon approaches the desk then realizes it's locked. Frowning, he puts on hand on the desk then attempts to rip the drawer out

Heh, nice solution to the locked drawer :) your roll is a little on the low side to allow it, though. However, you do get the impression that the drawer wouldn't last for much more than about a minute, if you were so motivated to apply sufficient violence to either desk or drawer.
We're out of initiative, and the time is 01:05 AM. With all the commotion, and a few minutes spent looting, you have no idea if the guards are still drinking, playing poker, or stumbling across the courtyard towards their lifeless bunkmates in the barracks.

Talon Dalkar
Yes I believe we're continuing with that plan. BTW I add 8 to spellcraft so I think I got that one lol
Talon leafs through the spellbook, then motions Caladwhen over "Not now, but we can copy and use some of these later. A few of these spells are beyond what I know, but with time I can decipher them" he puts the book away and takes a final look around the room "As long as Sindran doesn't think it's too funny I believe we should be getting to killing the other guards"
Sindran Eithe
"Oh, I think it's hilarious," Sindran says, appearing from behind them. He's lugging around his picnic basket where it seems he's placed the disembodied head of the warden (thankfully well away from any of the food). "Don't you think?" He looks at the warden's head.
He hasn't bothered looking at anything, feeling too restless to sit still and browse. The half-orc catches sight of himself in the full-length mirror and adjusts his clothing, trying to make himself look more presentable.
Hey, how much HP does Caladwhen and Aerent currently have and how bad do they look? Sindran needs his meatewalls!

From below, you hear an Ogre's attempt at whispering. It's actually pretty clever of the fellow, but the effort goes pretty much wasted due to his total incapacity of any sort of subtlety whatsoever.
"ERR...LITTLE GREEN MAN?," he whisper-yells from below; presumably at Sindran, who can only be considered little when compared to say a tree or a house, "THERE ARE 2 MANS OUTSIDE AT GATE"
poor Ron, even the Ogre has one up on him.
Sindran Eithe
Hahaha. Well, I'm sure Aerent can rock the guard look with those Ugg boots.
"Thank you, Grumblejack!" Sindran whisper-yells back. "I'll be down in a moment!"
"Oh, I'm not planning on eating it. I just wanted to give back a little for all the laughs he shared." He takes out a full pack of matches from his basket, striking a stick to test the batch. "Speaking of which, if you've all gotten everything you wanted, I'll be setting fire to his tower now."
Caladwhen
Leafing through the books, Calawhen nods upon overhearing Jack's "whispering". "We've lingered too long here, we'll have to take what we can and go."
We'll take the magical loot, and a couple of the valuable books. Sindran can burn the rest. As far as Cala goes Sindran, she is at HP 5/10, so could stand some attention.

I'm assuming everyone has taken what they want from the tower.
While you wait for everyone to finish their business inside the warden's tower, you linger for a couple of seconds on the battlements; just to watch the sea crash into the sharp rocks some 100 ft below, to listen to the gulls, to taste the salty air - ah, freedom...Not much longer, now.
Then, a dull 'whoooff' sound tells you that Sindran's task is complete. As you look up to see that the prison tower has been converted into a lighthouse proper, you feel this country has not improved from the revolution, now decades ago, when the self-righteous Sarenraeans took charge.
They allowed only those with the 'correct' religion to take up positions of command. And look what that decision got them : these days, incompetence, greed and stupidity rule. What's worse, the inquisition became too powerful, to the point where a Sarenraean inquisitor could hunt and judge just about anyone, simply because they objected to having a d in the day.
This is wrong.
besides, there's only one right religion. Hail Asmodeus.

The guards are standing in a corner of the north-eastern-most tower, relieving themselves from some of the night's consumptions. This means that currently their back is turned to you. It's also quite some distance away from where you're standing now.
there's no line of sight from the battlements near 21 to where the guards are taking a leak, but it's impossible to not notice their drunken blathering from anywhere near 6a.

woops, looks like I wasn't clear... I meant that normally, 2 guards patrol from 3c, all the way across the battlements, then 3b, and back all the way across the battlements, and to 3c. and forth. and back. But you know there aren't any guards left to do that - you've cleaned house. So, if you wanted, you could pretend to be the patrol, and the guards would not be surprised much if they heard a pair of footsteps on the battlements. sorry for the confusion.

15. Sergeant’s Quarters
At first glance this appears to simply be the well-kept bed chamber of the sergeant of the guard. There is a bed, a small table and wardrobe which contain Blackerly’s personal effects which are by in large worthless.
However, under Blackerly’s bed is an iron strong box with a good lock. It takes you about two minutes to crack, but you manage in the end.
Inside that box is a case of rotgut whiskey (a dozen bottles worth 5 gp a bottle) and 1235 gp. This is the lion share of the money that Tomas Blackerly has stolen from the prison treasury (or at least what he hasn’t yet spent). It's obvious that this is a larcenously huge amount of money to be possessed by a common sergeant.
Blackerly sometimes has trouble sleeping and so in his wardrobe has a flask of rotgut whiskey mixed with sleep-inducing herbs – his ‘medicine’ as he likes to call it. Blackerly has been taking it for years and is nearly immune. However if anyone else drinks it, treat it like a poison. The flask holds three doses.
And, of course, his personal diary. The sod actually took notes of how much he stole and when...Amateur! There's a pen and plenty of empty pages here.
