Some explanation is required:

Okay! Up until now, I've avoided telling you how your success in this mission will work.
You have two clear objectives:

1 - Open the gates.
2 - Kill the commander.

Other than that, it's up to you what you’ll do or will not do.

Your success will be measured in VP (Victory Points).
Each successful action adds to your points, each ‘vital’ action you don’t accomplish, subtract from it.

This is the possible outcome:

Premature Attack - the Bugbears attack much too early and are dealt a savage defeat.
Repulsed - the Bugbears attack and are repulsed.
Hard Fought Victory - Balentyne falls but only at great cost to the bugbears.
Victory - Balentyne falls though there is still some resistance.
Slaughter - Balentyne falls with barely a bugbear slain.

For Perception, Stealth, Bluff, Diplomacy you don't need to worry about rolls. I'll handle then for you, just describe your actions (Remember, you gain 'bonus' from a well-made description) without worrying about rolls.

So (6) guards with 20+ hp, of those only two properly armed and alert, plus their leader, armorless (he was using a full plate, if you remember) and without any preparation. Plus, you are attacking mounted combat specialists while they are off their horses.

Oh, we could have taken them even if they were on their horses. Horses don't have very good will saves vs. sleep and blindness. : )

Not bad at all, just enough to be careful. I'm a DM as well and I also strive to make encounters challenging for my players.

However, it seemed like we're being 'punished' for having been smart about the whole approach/encounter.

Are you saying that if we would have met them on the road and attacked them we would have dealt with rangers that had 10+ hit points?

I don't think that was what is being said. I gathered that they are all about 3rd level and it's going to be easier because we caught them with their pants down.

If it makes you feel any better Fausto, the trend so far, even when the odds are against us, is to beef up the enemies somewhat. DM Aku seems to like tough enemies that last a while. It has worked out fine so far, no Player Deaths or anything.

Though given that I do wonder how he keeps leveling up in that Villain Killer prestige class...

Also, just to clarify the question in the gameplay thread, you all want to know what the rangers who had been sleeping will do, right? Because the one living ranger took his turn to shoot at Fausto.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see if I get turned into a pincushion. : /

That's correct. I assume they're all waking and standing and scrambling for weapons this round, but I don't want to post an action until I get GM confirmation of that.

Okay, I’m not sure what have caused this situation. I have not said anywhere the level of the rangers and their hp. More than that, since the beginning, I’ve described then as strong combatants.

Anyway, if there’s any concern please, speak your mind, and give me the opportunity to make you understand my side too. :)

No problem or 'situation' at all. I was just commenting on the combat scene. People need to lighten up around here. :)

OK, I know the 'written word' is not the best medium to communicate but I am smiling as I write this. I did try to portray that 'mood' in my first post with a 'smile' like :)

Anyway back to commenting...

I really think that if we hadn't done what we did (approach by surprise and at night), we would have been in real trouble. Facing 6 rangers of 20+ hit points plus their leader in a 'normal' situation may just be too tough for our party.

Like I said, no issues with DM or DMing style. Nothing further from the truth.

The previous WotW game I was in got just past this part. We tackled this encounter head on by setting a trap. We staged an attack by bugbears against a "helpless girl" and when the patrol saw it and charged in to help they ran into lifted chains anchored to trees that took out the legs of all the horses.

Then we all swarmed in while the riders were prone and struggling. It was a fun fight.

DM Aku, am I correct in assuming the horses are tied down for the night?

Also, Fausto should now be "Enlarged" for the next 4 minutes (after his attack), but I have no idea how to make his mini 10'x10'.
