GM Netherfire |
Henry, do you mean what is holding up the statue? I'll leave some better detail here:
The stone under the statue raised upward, resembling a high stone platform or block on which the statue stands. In the stone block, there is an entrance to a spiral staircase, facing the doorway the four of you already passed through to enter the large room.
Sorry for lack of clarity. Remember, Perception is what helps you spot traps!
And Gorim, other than what Quick spotted, there doesn't seem to be anything else unusual about the large room.
GM Netherfire |
That's ok Gwath. While they do that, you can do something else, like venture into the hidden staircase or check out the corridor opposite to the one you guys just explored.
Quirel |
I'm back but I'm unsure of what I should be doing to be useful or interesting with no magic skills.
Hey, Levi, sorry if it felt like I just ignored you, but I assumed that Quick had a reason for wanting Gorim around.
And yeah, you're on to something. Fighters are handy in a fight, but there's not a lot they can do outside of combat except roleplay. My whole schtick about taking charge of the group is basically a preemptive scream for relevancy. But now... well, I guess we fighters don't have much to do except stand around and jack our jaws off.
Heh. And you guys think you have arguments. I just got one of my weapons thrown in a river!!
One of your weapons. One. And it's probably not even an heirloom weapon.
GM Netherfire |
Aye, fighters are at a bit of a disadvantage for utility outside of combat, but to be fair, they are reliable damage dealers. Unlike barbarians, they need not fly into a rage, and unlike paladins or rangers, they need not to fight evil or favored enemies to be at their best. It's easy to take their reliability for granted, and while they might get the lions share of combat feats, they are shorted for skills or other abilities out of combat.
I like what Henry did with his Crafting skill. If he throws a skill point in there every once in a while it could be a real handy thing. Crafting, in general, costs half the market price, plus time, and is a great rp device as a hobby or pastime.
If you're looking for recommendations on skills that would help the party in non-combat situations, any of the Knowledge skills are good way to go, but you could also rank up Diplomacy (to help npcs like you), Disable Device (pick locks and bypass traps!), Perception (to spot sneakers), Sense Motive (know when an npc lies to you), or Use Magic Device (use wands and scrolls!). In time, you might be the "trap-disabler guy", the "engineer", or the "eyes-in-the-back-of-your-head guy".
Let me know if you guys want to do something like that and aren't sure how, I'll be happy to answer any questions.
GM Netherfire |
So... are you guys gonna roll Stealth down the secret stairway? Or just charge down and "deal with the sacrilege"?
GM Netherfire |
Henry can see the pile of treasure and I've updated the DG map. Rearrange your icons if where I placed you is not correct.
GM Netherfire |
Do you guys have any questions about the current scenario? Unsure what do do? Or are the lot of you just busy right now?
Gwath Gil |
I have a hard time coming up with anything for Gwath to do in these situations, plus I'm still wrapping my head around the dungeon experience. It's much more contained and directed than worldly exploring and I'm still not well-rehearsed with the options at my disposal. Still timidly learning where the game master ends and the players begins, if that makes sense.
GM Netherfire |
That makes sense, Gwath. Play-by-post roleplaying games can be a bit fuzzy that way. If you ever have an idea on what to do go ahead and try it out. I might ask for some rolls after-the-fact, which is totally fine by me. I wouldn't want any of you to be afraid of "doing it wrong". If you want to try to figure out the rules before posting, just say here in Discussion what you want to do and I can tell you what checks (if any) it would require. In the words of Miss Frizzle: Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!
GM Netherfire |
Understood.
I'll be out of town for the next day or two. If I can post, I will, but otherwise I am sorry for the lapse in regular posting (or approximation thereof).
GM Netherfire |
You guys might want to explore the rest of the temple before drawing lines in the sand. Just sayin.
GM Netherfire |
If you want. Though I read Quick's last sentence as removing his hand from the sword hilt, not drawing a weapon. It makes little difference, I still like that you guys are very thoughtful in your actions/decisions/motivations.
Currently, there is an upstairs (at the end of the corridor explored by Quick and Gorim) and the great stone double doors to explore in the temple.
Henry Southgard |
That's Lawful Neutral for you. Just because you don't know the rules he's following doesn't mean that they aren't there.
-Henry Southgard sees himself as the leader of the group, which comes with obligations. He is loathe to order his perceived subordinates to do something that they are morally opposed to, but they were turning down valuable tools at a time when they were in mortal danger. In particular, the party wanted to leave behind a sword he knows to be effective against fey and demons, and he (erroneously) believes that Drow are fey.
-The best defense is a good offense. He can't prepare for a hostile ghost or see it coming, so shutting it down now sounded like best option.
-Quick basically laid both of those concerns to rest. It seems plausible that the spirit may be guarding the crypt instead of murdering everyone who sets foot in the temple. He also left the possibility of claiming the miniature hoard on the table.
Basically, that was enough to change Henry's mind. He still hates leaving the weapons behind, but knows he can't take them without breaking the party.
GM Netherfire |
Let me know where in the temple you guys rest. If you would like to set up watch shifts, also post Perception checks for your watch. Remember that there is an upstairs of the main temple that remains unexplored.
Gwath Gil |
I'd be honored to toss you anytime. With your permission of course!
By the way, I thought I'd give a heads up: I'll be out of town Friday and Saturday, and then on a little vacation next Monday through Thursday. I may have internet access at times during it, though, I'm not sure.
GM Netherfire |
Protip for Gorim: Preparing and casting Read Magic will automatically identify the scrolls you found.
Henry Southgard |

Looks good Gorim! Sorry I haven't posted in awhile. I thought I would be able to this morning but time got away from me. Continue on to the ledge or the library or whatever you guys are doing, I probably won't be able to post til Wednesday.

It's roleplaying time.GM Netherfire |
Nice, Henry!
Ball is your court, fellas. If you go to the ledge, say so. If you jump, roll for it. However, as Henry's list reminded me, you guys never identified the magic thing in Henry's pack, or tried to identify the other mystery magic items. Nor have you distributed gold, if that was something you wanted to do. Just throwing ideas out there.
