The Endless Sea

Game Master Koralie

A sandbox game starting out with humble origins. Life on the open sea may be the life for thee.

1 to 50 of 65 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

I have a game I'm starting in conjunction with another GM, and I want to recruit a few players for it.

The gist is you have no idea who you are. At least not yet.

What I want is 5-6 players that would have any reason to start the game on a boat. Anything from crew to prisoner would work, though details don't need to be had just yet.

Here the catch: (there is always a catch)

You don't have a PC class yet. You can start with any npc class you wish, and I will allow you to keep it once we start for free as a gestalt class level, i.e. we'll take the best parts of it and keep that, once you "level up" into a heroic class. The trade off there is I roll your starting stats and we roleplay what adventuring class you become. I will try not to make what class you 'grow' into unattainable.

If you are still with me, then great! I have a few surprises to throw at you guys, and want to see if I can pull this off.

I'll try to answer creation questions below, but if I miss anything please ask.

Creation guidelines:

  • Theme: No spoilers, but you will start on a boat. Your reason ic/ooc may be anything at all, captain, prisoner, monstrous race that was captured, sneaky thief trying to hitch a ride, the cook, a crew member, the local spellcaster that wants to pursue life as a real wizard, etc. Whatever you see fit RP wise is fine. I don't need 5 paragraphs why you are on a boat, I will fill in the rest once we start. But do keep in mind your simple origins, you're starting as a NPC class, which looking it over, still works pretty nice for a jumping off point.

  • Stats: As stated above, I will create some secret rolls for you using 4d6, but keep your stats secret until you become level 1 in a non NPC class. I will make sure you can become said class, and be functional (read: This doesn't mean optimal, it could, but at least functional. The dice can be as fickle as the sea. But this game is about more RP than stats. You'll be fine)

  • Races: almost any. Open to core races, and almost any race that has class levels as a progression method. I have a few monsters as a race books and those are cool. Though keep in mind you start as a npc class still, until you level up.

  • Classes: Any NPC. (i.e. Adept, Aristocrat, Commoner, Expert, or Warrior.) Also make a note what you plan on becoming once you level up so I know what to give you for stats.

  • Gold: 100 gold to buy gear, items, or whatever else you need to start. This is your life's savings to date, so spend wisely, you are heading out on a voyage. Or it was taken from you and stowed on board if you're a monster.. who knows?

  • I expect weekdays to get a post or two in a day, you should be able to do the same. :)

I'll take the first 6 people that are interested, and pick their NPC/Future class combo and post that they are able to join.

  • I am interested, it sounds like it could be a fun idea and like something I would do to my players. So we won't have any stats available to us while we are an NPC class? Does that mean you'll be doing the rolls until we get a PC class?

Correct. You may roll, but you just wont see the modifiers until later.

Stats wont matter too much as an NPC though, however I will jumble what is rolled to fit both classes if possible. The focus is more on the heroic class over the NPC one.

I will say now, you won't be unplayable :)

In regards to the "I want to be [blank] when I level up?" question, are you opposed to us simply leaving that to be decided as things play out?

Not at all, feel free to do that.

I am interested, it sounds fun. Do you need anything right now? Or do you want to wait until you get your 6 people to have us work out the backstory and inventory?

I'm interested. I'll work on a character to out forth and post once again once I have more to show.

This seems really interesting. So for character creation, all you need is a race, current NPC class, possible Player class, and inventory/simple backstory?

A thought crossed my mind. While many modifiers can be kept in the background, how to you plan on handling additional/negative skill points from a high/low intelligence score?

Just need 6 of you to post your NPC class, loose reason for why you're on the boat, and ya...you're in. I'll take it from there.

    Yup.

Good point, though lets just assume stat wise you have all 10's so no bonus/penalty yet. We can always adjust the character sheet after we start and maybe if you got a low INT you took a blow to the head and forgot a skill point :)

I've been interested in randomly generating a character for awhile now so I'm going to give it a try. I'm going to base my rollls around what is currently on the Archives of Nethys website.

    Core or Other Race: 1d2 ⇒ 2 - Other
Other Race, going down the list on Archives of Nethys: 1d50 ⇒ 13 - Ghoran

Adept, Aristocrat, Commoner, Expert, Warrior: 1d5 ⇒ 3 - Commoner

This particular ghoran lived a rather simple life in the land of Geb before being kidnapped by the ship's captain to be used as a replenishing food source. While he misses having the ground beneath his roots, the captain has been sure to supply him with a patch of fresh soil whenever they make land.

This would work particularly well if he has at least a Charisma of 11 so that he gets his spell-like abilities.

I would like to join. I want to play, if possible, a human oracle who lost his divine powers (becoming an expert in the mean time) and wants to regain them. Is that enough to start?

Sounds very interesting. Here is my recommended character.

    Race: Undine
    NPC Class: Adept
Future Class:Cleric (Deity would be preferable to allow access to weather/water based domains.)
Inventory: Will start with just the clothing on his back and the 100gp.
Reason to be on the Ship: He is a young Undine who was directed to go out on a journey in the above world to become a man. A relative managed to get him hired as the ship's medic/healer. Even though he is not a cleric, he is still able to heal and bless when needed to a limited effect.

    Sure.

Future Class:Monk/Cleric (Gestalt right?) Wisdom of course will be important, but will be a Dex-based Monk. Deity would be preferable to allow access to weather/water based domains.

The free gestalt is just for the 1 level of the NPC class, it's a bonus for starting off as a NPC level guy/girl. You can't keep leveling that class up though. It's a level 1 and done deal. :) and certainly not a heroic class gestalt, that's a bit overpowered for this game.

Ah... okay. I changed the above to Cleric for future class than.

Right-O, Ahoy! Welcome aboard! (slot 3 filled)

    Race - Dwarf
NPC Class - Aristocrat / Future Class - Cleric (if possible Warpriest)
Inventory - Warhammer, Air bladder, Backpack, Bedroll, Belt pouch, Hammer, Mug, Miner's pick, Rope, Traveler's outfit, Ale (gallon), Holy symbol (iron), Flint & steel. My calculation brings this to 26 gp, 9 sp, 2 cp.
Reason to be on the ship - On a diplomatic journey to visit a different Dwarven clan across the sea. He is very devout in his faith to Torag.

Welcome Master Dwarf. Here is your boarding ticket. (slot 4 filled)

    1d2 ⇒ 2
    1d50 ⇒ 45
    1d5 ⇒ 3

Shamelessly stealing TLH's idea with the random character generation.

    Race - Undine
NPC Class - Commoner / Future Class - Let's see what she develops into! Probably something non-martial.
Inventory - Underwater light crossbow, dagger, hot weather outfit, backpack, belt pouch, waterskin, fishing kit, nautical chart
Reason to be on the ship - The ship's navigator and the captain's lover. Chosen by a superstitious captain/crew to bring luck on their journey and intercede with Gozreh on their behalf.

Welcome aboard, here's your boarding pass maam. Ticket #5.

    One more to go.

    Dot!

    Gender: Female
    Race: Catfolk
    NPC Class: Expert
    Heroic Class: Unchained Rogue
Inventory: Rogue's kit, pocketed scarf and 42gp
Reason to be on Ship: Hopefully out of the frying pan and not into the fire

Darn, I was hoping declaring interest would have gotten me a spot before I went to work, but I see now that I needed to add more. Oh well, maybe next time! Have fun you guys.

I can make room, ships big enough. Though you do need to let me know what npc/class you want, and a reason this person is on board.

The dock master looks at your ticket, it looks a little too crisp, but who would forge a ticket onto this trip? Pff. No one. Welcome aboard. Number 6! slot filled.

    Woot =^^=

So how do we build our NPC character?

Seth's profile for his catfolk btw =^^=

This is Kittenmancer's profile for the undine navigator. Random ability scores until we get them rolled.

Whelp. just saw. 10 in everything before racial

I'm considering this character to be fairly simple-minded having grown on a farm as a food source. Now that he has left his home and world behind, he has started to think more while learning how to do things that are completely foreign to him. Instead of giving him a fairly normal weapon proficiency, I'm going to go with a boarding pike as he only learned how to use a weapon after being gang pressed as a food source. Seeing that the plant could be of more use, he started having the crew teach him how to sail and protect the ship.

Claws all the way. eventually going for claw-blades.
She likes to dance. I see her as playful and mischievous
IF we get to pick deities, im going with Picoperri. for background. she is from a travelling acrobatics troupe. Youngest of the family. After getting her paws caught in the proverbial cookie jar, she decided its best not to have her family get in trouble. so she left and try to get as far away as possible

I've narrowed down the potential/preferred classes to four: druid, sorceress, inquisitor, hydrokineticist. I haven't played most of these, so I'm quite excited about trying out new things.

    Will we be using traits?

This is the alias I made for the game. I (partially) filled out the character sheet, but I noticed that the expert class is mostly redundant with the planned oracle class. Would it be possible to start as a warrior instead?

    "The Lucky Halfling" wrote:

    if you want too, yes.

    2. unless you buy more, none from the same list, etc. :)

I would like to join in as a possible cleric/rogue, commoner for now, if spots are still possible. If not, I hope everyone enjoys their time, it looks awesome

Well this is disappointing. A day late and a dollar short I guess. But should you need another:

    Race: Human
    NPC Class: Expert
    Future Class: Swashbuckler
Reason to be on the Ship: Years ago a mermaid saved his life and that of his home, then completely disappeared. He's been hoping from ship to ship searching for her, or any mermaid for that matter, to finally thank her. But her race has proven to be extremely elusive.

Will you allow VMC? Cause i think of doing that with the rogue and getting a few Bard abilities

    This does sound interesting.
What about feats at 1st/NPC level?

The character should be ready to begin (I built it as an expert). I'll hold off on traits until the character and his class are clearer.

I'll put you on the crew manifest, but sadly I got more than enough to start. So if someone has an accident or goes MIA then I'll let you know and see if you are still available.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The NPC level is effectively level 1, so you would start with a feat, if you don't qualify for a feat you want as an NPC, then leave that slot empty until you get your heroic class assigned. Though we are full up for this ride, You could sign on as a cargo sweep or deck hand for now, we could always put some people to work until a guest room opens up on board.

Forgive me, I don't know what VMC is shorthand for. Can you fill me in? :)

I will also add you into the crew manifest sheet, if a spot opens up I'll pull you from the cargo hold. Sadly, I gave out 7 boarding passes, and was planning on 6. So we may be a bit overbooked. However, I hear the cargo hold is only slightly musty smelling, and relatively free of rats and other disease carrying menaces. You should be fine down there.

I mean, if they'll feed me and I can avoid the diseases, I'll work on the deck. Never know when someone goes overboard and you just gotta fill that spot.

    Variant multiclassing

    VMC

Works for me, your hired as crew, background but can talk during "roleplaying" scenes, not active during fight scenes.
