its great to hear from you Lyn :)
I can just imagine that it would have taken another 4 years of real time play to finish all that up, too.
I'm sorry your health isn't the best, and wish the best for you, and thanks to you and the other GMs that kept this going as long as it did.
I guess I have a few questions...
Did you plan for Agartha itself to not survive the conflict?
Who takes over the Empire?
Any main character deaths you planned for?
I guess thats it for now.

I'd love to know what happened with Michael and Kitty. ^-^
Alton would have quietly left once everything was safe... and the fire rats he constantly worried over were going to be revealed to be the clones of clones of clones (you get the idea) of polymorphed red dragons the firebird leaders of way-back-when had used to power their spacefaring.
Anthony would have ended up part of a city guard/forest ranger back home.
Belyu would have eventually gotten some much needed therapy as she was a hive mind colony posing as the human it subsumed. She was also the leader of Triad, which did in fact have more than three members.
Gareth was going to be language teacher at Avalon.
Ryo would have eventually settled down and remarried. His children would have been quiet happy about this and end up becoming teacher aides and later on professors in their own right.
Merihk, who I didn't get to use much, was Lysander's reincarnation from when Balance's Champion put him back in his proper place in time.
Oniero would have gotten some sleep! He's done this now in two different yet similar homebrew settings, one of which Lyn played in (he went by the codename Mache in that one).
Pyrrhos would have caused an uproar when it was discovered his father was a sea elf and that's why he didn't have any firebird mutations or afflictions like the others.
Pyry was probably gonna end up just moving somewhere cold and living out his days there. Making clothes out of ice for people, most likely.
Taika was always gonna end up one of the better magic item crafters, especially since she worked on her own skeletal system and replaced parts of it with extra magic items slots. Its why she is heavier than she looks.
Others I had would probably just stay on as professors.

It's good to hear from you, Lynora!
I honestly don't have a lot of questions, since I was always more playing an NPC anyways and I was fairly separate from the "main storyline". For my part, I think I'd planned for Fear to be a sort of minor antagonist, with Lyn's permission, though I think I'd honestly probably handle it a bit differently nowadays. Fear really strongly embodied paranoia, a willingness to meddle and tamper and hurt others in the interest of staying safe, keeping everyone afraid of you. Fear was sort of cheating at the whole game, and its champion was going to be this unsettling derro who happened to be an old war buddy of Vakkler's.
But honestly, as I fell further behind the many scenes going on, I think the conflict of Vakkler himself went from "doesn't see himself as a part of things so much as a necessary hindrance to former enemies" to "has no idea what is going on". Maybe Discord could have been good for this game--a subchannel for every area, so you'd always know, "oh, that's happening in the library, that's the stuff my character would be aware of and could get involved in". We're just glad you're still around our corner of the multiverse, Lyn - 'radio silence' over these last few years has taken on some really scary connotations, so it's very, VERY good to hear from you!!! (^-^)
(But I'm also first to admit to never using much social media to keep me more in the loop on RL, so me culpa, heh.)
As far as my warped opinion on this...I honestly figured that the 'founding' characters from Realms of Agartha would finally fall fighting the Empire, with all of them and the School going down in a blaze of glory saving our main Avalon student characters, who then go on to finish what was started and free the galaxy, yada yada yada.
Not that I have any problem at all with a much happier ending - just figured it might be time to 'pay the piper', as it were...
| Kobold Catgirl |
I think both endings sound really cool and powerful! I actually went back and read the kobold worldbuilding I wrote way back when, and I think it might have been fun if some of those other surviving kobold colonies could have allied with Agartha against the Empire, finally avenging their creator against the Empire and making peace with their neighbors.
The idea of an open-enrollment fantasy rules-light high school RP was always really cool, albeit probably very overwhelming to run! In hindsight, I wonder if it would have been easier on Lynora if there'd been multiple main GMs managing different parts of the school, with the rest of us skittering about helping them play out storylines like "school dance" and "battle for the future of Time itself".
It was fun! I'm really glad the whole OTD Roleplay Maelstrom came to something in the end. I wasn't ever the best contributor to those origins, to say the least, but it was really nice to see the story indirectly make it to a much better place.

So the Empire carries on. I feel like the grandfather in the princess bride explaining that Humperdinck doesn’t die at the end. :P
They lose a major portion of their fleet in the battle and the appearance of functioning battleships from the other gem dragon worlds is certainly enough to drive them out of that section of space. As an after effect of this victory many other worlds are able to break free of Empire control and create an Alliance with the gem dragon worlds. The Empire is reduced in both power and territory and there is a constant battle going on along the borders of Empire and Allaince space. But no, they don’t just magically disappear. :)
I don’t think I planned for any main character deaths, no. Doesn’t mean none would have happened. Miss Jones was definitely going to sacrifice herself to save her students and then not choose to come back because that was her penance finally served in her eyes anyhow. But other than that, no, most of them were planned to live through things.

Oh, yeah, that is a great idea too. Probably where Adsila and Razule would have fallen, for sure. Ormarr, in a grieving rage over the death of the people that was essentially his sister and little brother, would have soon followed. Though he would have gone full Progenitus Hydra doing so.

Ahh ok I missread some of that then, good to know!
With Ephebe being Kronos 2.0, how much freedom would she have to be present as a mother? Would that be a permanent good bye situation for Krays and the kids?
How would the Ryuzo/Nala situation pan out, assuming neither of them dies? I know the Others really freaked her out, more than most...
For my characters...
Krays' future is entirely dependent on how far he'd feel he had to go to protect anyone in his family, but especially Ephebe and the kids. I could see him going a bit darkside on our enemies, Ephebe is always able to pull him back though, so it would not have been for long.
Ghalen would have stuck by Tyrrin's side no matter what. After Ehos' death...I had planned for that to shake him a bit, enough for him to completely lose his hesitance in fighting against the Empire directly. He was already working with Jiminy a bit, but he would have gone all in, and lead spec op units against IPSD incursions.
Unless Keme would have wanted to stay and fight, Gennosuke would have tried to get him and Alys as far from Agartha as possible. If he faced any pushback, or either of them refused to leave, he would have called in the rest of his clan to directly aid in the conflict, and fought hard.
I think most of my other characters were pretty much retired, or became NPcs to an extent.

Kitty would have reconnected with her family, which would be very helpful in her trauma recovery, although that was still gonna be a process. Ultimately, obaa-sama was gonna agree to fund their business and they would have moved to Michael’s hometown as planned. Eventually. After the whole war thing. But yeah, I had intended for them to be able to achieve their plans in the end, even if it was with a lot more emotional scars than either had anticipated at the beginning.

Yeah, sorry for worrying you guys! I kinda had a mental breakdown fueled by health problems + major life stress and sorta lost language for a while. Autistic reactions to extreme stress are kinda wild like that.
I won’t say I never considered a more tragic ending, but honestly, I have been so frustrated with tragic endings basically being the default every time I start to like something and decided screw that. While there are tragedies and not everything is happy happy, I wanted to give this a more hopeful ending where it felt like all the crap along the way was actually worth it. So the beauty of being a non-linear existence is that Ephebe can pretty much continue her “mortal” existence as long as she damn well pleases. While still also being every when at once doing her job as Time. I had a bad moment at first when Krays and Ephebe got together when I was all like oh no, is this gonna end in a terrible tragedy? But then I worked through the actual logic of it and realized that it totally didn’t have to be. Also, Ephebe would be unphased by Krays going any amount of dark side. Honestly, I think it’s easy to forget that An is the one who was raised by Tam and Aananda. Ephebe was raised by demons. You really can’t scare her off with this stuff. :)
Oh, I remember that stuff. The whole "im not really her" convo was a kind of a bomb drop. I mean, she was who Krays fell in love with so it really didn't matter to him. But in the past the couple of times he started slipping, she did draw him back.
Oof. Nala is the character I genuinely feel the most sorry for in all this. There is no truly happy ending for her. She inherits the mantle of Winter Queen when the Others take out her mom. She can’t get out of it. Especially when they need to fight the Others. Even after the dust settles, she’s stuck as the winter queen. I’m assuming that Ryuzo would at least try to stay with her. But yeah, it totally bites and there’s not a way out for her. The best she can do is try to reform the system as much as possible, but like, honestly she has a not great ending. :(
Damn, that is sad. And like the complete opposite of what she wanted. I hope at least that by that point, she had gotten her other issues resolved so she could handle that without fear. As far as Ryuzo...he would have stayed as long as he could. He would not, however, fulfill the roles of the Winter Knight. He wouldn't be able to live with himself, no matter how much he loved Nala. If she was able to change the system, then it's more likely he'd remain with her.

I think the most important question I have is,
What happens to/with the coffee demons?!? lol
Honestly, I think my main questions are mostly what happens to the various characters my PCs were involved with, first and foremost being Ginni.
Ace is an interesting character. When I originally made him, he was based in part on a mashup of Taskmaster, Darwin(from X-Men), and like one other character I can never remember, lol. His core concept was to be able to adapt to or evolve in such a way as to overcome almost any obstacle, problem, or circumstance.
I also made him incredibly skill based, and gave him class features that weren't all magic/supernatural. Obviously, he has plenty that are both, but the idea was for him to function just fine without them.
I could easily see him taking the fight to the Empire, and truly wrecking havoc all by himself. **Especially** if he started using his Consume Identity ability, eating the brains of fallen officers and important enemies, and completely duplicating them(including their special abilities). He can store up to 16 such personas.
However, as he grew as a character from my playing him(and as I grew as a roleplayer), he formed many friends, got a girlfriend, etc. If it came down to it, I could easily see him making the sacrifice play to help save them. Idk if he would come back or not, after that.
As for Silinrul, I would like to think he would be able to help rally all the lycans, lycanthropes, weres, shifters, etc to take the fight to the Empire. Idk even know if that's a possibility, or where Lyn wanted to take that story arc, but if he was able to, I think that would have been really awesome.
I honestly have no idea what may or may not happen with Serrin, and her being the champion of Darkness. I suppose a lot of it would depend on what Darkness wanted from her when the 'final battle(s)' happened. I could potentially see her becoming a villain or being a *very* reluctant hero.

Oh I guess these thoughts lead to another question:
Would everyone who was still a champion remain a champion after it's all said and done? I think for Krays, the answer is most likely yes, but curious about the others...
And who would Ephebe take as Time's champion?
Yeah, the whole champion thing is still a lifelong commitment and all that. Some of them might have given their champions a chance to back out though because they all picked who they did because they needed to have their people in position when the Others arrived. But mostly they stay with who they picked and that’s that.
Ephebe already picked. That’s literally why An is back. She felt guilty about unintentionally stealing An’s life, so that’s why she rezzed her in the first place. And Kronos 1.0 was like, *shrug* whatever, not my problem, so there wasn’t anyone to stop her. And An never had a problem with being a champion, but boy howdy is she gonna be weirded out about her patron being an alternate reality version of her. After all, if you want something done right,…. ;P

I have a rather crazy pants idea:
What if we rebooted(and re-opened for recruitment to new players) Avalon as a truly Living World game? It's sorta always been that way, but as noted, Lyn was more or less the only GM. If most of us here were willing to take up that mantle, Lyn could have as much or as little involvement as she was able to.
I've found that living world games are quite popular right now, with several *big* discords having dedicated recruitment channels for them. We could have the main thread still here on Paizo, but as suggested above, use discord for specific rooms/areas.
Plotwise, we have a few ways we could take the game:
1) Keep the main plot the same, but the 'end game' is pretty much always in the future. The game already moved fairly slowly in universe(it was just a few weeks into 'September', despite several IRL years having passed). Maybe Ephebe/Time is deliberately slowing things down?
2) Rewind time, to the first day of this current semester. This could either be a literal in game rewind by Ephebe/Time or it could just be us stating out of game that we're moving things back for the reboot.
3) Skip to the next semester, which would allow new students(players) to easily join.
4) This is the truly bat-poop idea: What if Avalon has secretly been a spaceship/station ala Castle of Lions from Voltron: Legendary Defender, and Ryo transforms the school into a battleship to take the fight to the Empire ....IN SPACE?!?
Now, Avalon was run using PF1 rules, but several have made it clear you no longer really like/use that system. While I still love it(*Especially* if Spheres was allowed) I would never force or even suggest people use a system they don't like.
Thus, I propose one of the following(yay more list! lol)
A) Keep with PF1, if everybody is okay with doing so for a game we all dearly love and have put much effort into.
B) Switch to Fudge which is a rules light system focusing on roleplaying. Hmm, what does that sound like? lol
C) Use Starfinder! This would work especially well if we go into SPACE!! and battle the Empire.
Anyways, I realize this might be a pipedream, ya'll having basically moved on, but dang it, this was one of the absolute bestest best games in the history of games, and I can't let it truly die without at least attempting to 'save it!'

Lol, funny you should ask about the coffee demons….so, I had this idea stuck in my head that the quietest, shyest, most utterly timid one of Ephebe and Krays’s kids was gonna basically get picked by them to take over the crossroads since Ephebe can’t do it anymore now that she’s officially Time. And the idea of this very soft spoken little girl being in a position of power over demons and devils amused me no end. So yeah, that’s how we get the Most Unlikely Demon Lord. :P
And I think that Ginni would probably be willing to go out and work as a spy with Ace, presuming he comes back after the big battle. I mean, a succubus with a soul has a lot of possibilities there, especially once she gets control of her shapechanging abilities. And I think that she would be able to ground him a bit, keep him from going dark side even though it’s a pretty morally grey line of work. But helping free people from oppression would be a noble cause that she’d be up for signing up for.
So I never really got to play it out, but the plan was for Jaiye to make her power play during the lead up to the big battle, basically slowly defeating each lycan clan leader in combat to take over until she had them all. It was gonna be difficult, but that was the plan, and I figured Sil would basically be the right hand of the queen in that scenario. Basically Jaiye was gonna be focused on leading her people and raising her adopted daughter (Ehos’s succubus child) and there wasn’t really gonna be room for anything else in her life. But that’s a lot really and she would definitely be working hard to create peace between the lycans and the elves. Set up a sort of sports competition for settling disagreements, that sort of thing. Basically trying to bridge the cultural gap without making either side give up their identity.
Well, keep in mind that like all patrons, Darkness is morally neutral. Good, evil, it’s all the same to him. So she would have had complete freedom in matters of morality, same as all champions.

how would Tyrrin and Ghalen fit in there?
Honestly, they would be my pick for special envoy to the other gem dragon worlds and would likely have been/would be (Ephebe makes her nonlinear perspective everyone’s problem) a big reason behind why the cavalry showed up when it did. Not set in stone or anything, just kinda what I pictured for them post big battle.

Honestly, if we were to reboot the concept, I'd be totally down--but I'd vote for a new school, new setting, new story, new storylines, fresh start. Just, you know, the same genre, similar structure. I'm probably biased by having totally lost the plot in the current storyline, but I think if you're gonna do a reboot, you gotta do it right. I feel like it'd be easier to split up responsibilities that way, too. Lighten the load.
A high fantasy superpowers high school game is a really fun idea. I think you could spin that top twice. I don't have much opinion about which TTRPG would be best for it, though. Definitely not rules-less, but I think between rules-light PF1/PF2 and normal FATE/PBTA/FUDGE, each option has plenty of upsides and downsides.

Honestly, I would be okay with a total and complete reboot, but then, I wasn't super involved in all the mega plots. Idk how those who were might feel about totally abandoning them.
I'm pretty sure it's very much *not* rules light, but I'm curious how Avalon would be if it was a Mutants and Masterminds game?? **Definitely** not suggesting that(though would be open if others were), more just an idle musing.

I think "Allegedly PF1" was fairly fun, honestly. It wasn't, like, good at handling conflicts, because PF1's strong point has never been balance to begin with even when you're following all the rules (:P), but it was good for handling the less high-stakes scenes, and the high-stakes scenes were better reserved for free-form anyways. It was a fun framework.

As far as a possible reboot goes, I don’t know how much/if I would be able to participate. The spirit is willing but the meatsuit malfunctions a lot, yadda, yadda, etc.
That said, I can offer some advice. Don’t try to retread old ground. If you do this, either move the timeline or the location. So, you could set it on one of the other worlds and bring in current characters as exchange students OR, and this is the option that probably works best since it preserves the setting, fast forward about 25-30 years. Let it be its own story in a slightly altered but still recognizable setting a la Legend of Korra. That way everyone gets to start on an equal footing and you’re not stuck with a too big kinda clunky plot. Because if there’s one thing I learned in the process of playing this game, it’s the little plots that people actually get excited about. You don’t actually need some big doom crisis lurking on the horizon. Adolescence manufactures enough doom crises on its own. :P

My thought would be continue as if things played out as Lyn described, and continue on Agartha at Avalon. Keep some of the NPCs for familiarity.
This way, if folks wanted to pop in from time to time they could without committing over much.
We can brainstorm, outline what did or didn't happen, then move forward.
Or this could be too much nostalgia speaking, lol. It was 11 years we played this, after all.
| Kobold Catgirl |
I think that'd be a good approach, yeah. A Thirty Years Later. Characters we're done with can have died or moved on, characters we want to come back can, and it's easy to bring new characters in.
I 10000% agree about small stories. That's the whole strength of a storyline about, well, kids. The small stuff feels big.

I dunno about 30 years...maybe 10 or 15. Some of us might want to play our in-game progeny ;)
If the progeny in question is draconic they uh, hit their ‘teenage’ years around age 26 :P

30 years in the future would be fine by me! Ace & Silinrul should still be around, if I wanted to reprise them in any form. They would only be in their '40s'.
I definitely wouldn't want to even attempt this without Lyn's blessing, even if she isn't able to be involved. This is her baby after all.
To quote one of the best movies, The Crow: "Little things used to mean so much to Shelly. I used to think they were kind of... trivial. Believe me, nothing is trivial."
The 'little' plots were some of my absolute favorite stories!
