Lloyd Alexander

Books

Another amazing influence on my life passed this morning. Lloyd Alexander wrote the Prydain chronicles (and the Westmark Trilogy and "The cat who wanted to be a Man" among a bunch of other things). The Prydain books are about the only thing I have read more than 3 times. I read them when I started learning D n D. I go back to them every once in a while to remember what it was like to be 12 and have such an easy life compared to the 'adult' troubles I have now.

Rest in Peace Sir.

I think I will treasure my signed copy of one of his books more than ever now... :'(

This makes me very sad. I loved the Prydain books more than the Lord of the Rings. There was a short story about Dalben that completely changed my perspective on life when I was an early teen.

I will have to go back and read them again. And more of his work; I didn't realize how much there was. I've only read a few other than Prydain.

I missed this post last week, but I did stumble across the news last night. I ordered hard cover editions and I am waiting anxiously to reread these stories.

I think that Alexander is one of the greats to introduce fantasy in general and Welsh mythology in particular. The Prydain series explores honor, sacrifice, and friendship. His distinction between nobility and "noble worth" is wonderful.

My handle here, F.F., is my favorite bard of fantasy. Here is a good introduction of the character http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fflewddur_Fflam

This website helped me track down the hardcovers' ISBNs last night: http://www.lloydalexanderbooks.com/

Damn, that sucks. And to think, he lived right here in Philadelphia. I could have been stalking him these last few years that I've lived here.

Hey F.F.- Saw your screen name a few weeks ago on another thread and wondered of you had heard the news. Of the main characters, Fflam was my fav. His description in the books is way better than what the Disney people came up with. Of course, Gurgi was my fav the first time around (sue me, I was 12).

And zombie, don't feel bad. Im sure he was all locked up in a compound or Hospice care or something. Im not sure seeing him in the last few years would have been anything but a letdown.

...hmm, in all truth I thought he was already dead...but still, sad to hear, I also remember Prydain books fondly.
