Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship ??????????. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before.
This is a PLAYER recruitment for a play-by-post campaign here on the boards using the new Star Trek Adventures game created by Modiphius. Please note that this is a player recruitment, not a character recruitment. I do not want to hear about your character concepts yet. What I am looking for is a group of players who can post frequently and enthusiastically, who want to play a Star Trek game, and who want to create characters that will develop over time. While there will be plenty of action and adventure, there will also be opportunities to grapple with ethical and moral quandaries and contemporary problems in the finest tradition of science fiction.
I envision the creation of the campaign going like this:

1. Applications and player selection.
2. Players choose era of play.
3. Players design the ship their characters will be crewing.
4. Players design their characters with an eye to creating a balanced crew with lots of opportunities for interaction.

That is a weird order, I know, but it feels like the best way to go about it to me. A starship crew is not a random collection of characters, but is chosen to work as a team.

So, if you want to apply, please submit the following:

1. Why do you want to play in this campaign?
2. Are you willing to buy the rules or do you already have them? (This isn’t a deal breaker. I just don’t want to be the only one who has the rules)
3. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?
4. What is your favorite episode of Star Trek (could also be a movie) and why? (This is not a lore test. I don’t care if you know everything about it, or even the name. You could say something like “the one where Data is kidnapped by Lore and the Borg.”
5. What would be your preferred era of play? TOS, Between TOS and TNG, Early TNG, Post Wolf 359, Dominion War.
6. If you don’t have a high post count on the site and want to submit a writing sample, please do. If you have a good sample of posts here, I’ll just poke around and see what you have written in real games.

1. I like science fiction space opera and the tropes and romanticism that comes with it. I haven't been on these boards for that long (comparatively), but know how much amazing roleplay can come from players who are eager to interact. I'd like to be part of that again but as a player this time.

2. I do not have the rules currently. I wouldn't be opposed to purchasing them eventually, though I would rather wait for a sale if possible to save some extra bucks. As I'm not knowledgeable in the series, I don't see myself picking them up otherwise I become engulfed by the fandom.

3. Currently, my strengths as a player are the semi-regular posting pace I have going. College this semester is a bit easier than the last so I can usually post every two days or so. I also playing off others actions as that gives the narrative a better flow IMO. My weaknesses include a tendency to forget details of scenes, especially there's a flurry of posting before I can get to the boards that day. I also a lack a lot of setting information, but I'm trying to fix that by starting from the first series. Its been on my to-do list anyway.

4. I remember someone telling me about an episode once, though I haven't watched it yet. The plot was a sort of dimensional ripple and all these different Enterprises (I think that was the ship's name) met up from different dimensions. I was just heartbroken about the Enterprise from the dimension where the Borg (killer/assimilating robots?) had gotten to everyone else and they were the last survivors and the fear they must have felt when all the other iterations wanted to send everyone back home.

5. Uh....(there's that lack of knowledge showing) The Next Generation? I think its the happier of the bunch? From the box art on series at least.

6. I've been doing a lot of GMing. Long posts, short posts, great setting starters, minimal effort due to classes, I've got all the good and bad here.

1. Why do you want to play in this campaign?

I love Star Trek and I always have! It'd be a lot of fun to be in a Star Trek adventuring group. I'm currently GMing two other games on these boards, and it'd be nice to be able to be a PC too.

2. Are you willing to buy the rules or do you already have them? (This isn’t a deal breaker. I just don’t want to be the only one who has the rules)

I don't have the rules, but I can scoop them up if needed. I'm sure there's a relatively cheap online PDF available.

3. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?

Strengths: I'm an avid writer and I like to be very descriptive of my character and the setting, and I try to keep consistent throughout so as to avoid character plot holes.

Weaknesses: I have custody of my son on the weekends, and I won't be able to update from Friday night to Sunday night basically ever.

4. What is your favorite episode of Star Trek (could also be a movie) and why?

I really liked Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges from Deep Space 9, because it dealt with strong morality themes about what's acceptable and what isn't acceptable in times of war. Section 31 is also a really cool faction - the "dark side" of the Federation government, disavowed and secretive, but necessary(?) to preserve the peace.

5. What would be your preferred era of play? TOS, Between TOS and TNG, Early TNG, Post Wolf 359, Dominion War.

I'd vote for immediately after Deep Space 9's Dominion War concluded. It'd be fun to explore what could happen next.

6. If you don’t have a high post count on the site and want to submit a writing sample, please do. If you have a good sample of posts here, I’ll just poke around and see what you have written in real games.

Feel free to check out the two games I have running, I'm having a blast with them currently. Dungeon World is a great system.

1. Star Trek was, to use modern terms, my first fandom. As a teenager, I was obsessed. I was even part of a local Star Trek fan club, where we did everything but actually role-play. A couple of years later, I had my first experience in play by post, with Star Trek, in a usenet group. I've done a lot of online role-play since then, usually in MUSHes but also recently in Roll20 online tabletop, but it is the one setting I've never been able to return to.

2. I own them. I was planning to wait to see if I got in this game, but the QuickStart rules look fantastic, and I couldn't resist.

3. It's hard to judge my own strengths and weaknesses, but I'm told that I make very believable characters. I'm also good at staying in that character's head, after the first few posts that I do (it takes me a bit to calibrate, you could say).

I'd say my greatest weakness was dialogue. A lot of my characters speak with modern language, despite the era that I am trying to play in, though I'm trying to improve that. There's also the fact that I dictate, which means on days that I get laryngitis my posts may be much shorter in order to save my voice. Also, I sometimes miss dictation errors that look very weird.

4. My all-time favourite episode would have to be The Visitor. I admit, I'm a sucker for father-son stories, and this was an amazing one. Seeing how the absence, and then search for his father shapes Jake's entire future is incredibly touching, as is Ben's reactions to the developments in his son's life.

5. Post Wolf-359. I'd say post Dominion War, if it was an option. We really only saw glimpses of that era, in the final seasons of Voyager, and the last couple of movies, so there's lots of room for storytelling freedom. The Dominion War itself, though, would limit the kinds of stories we could play.

6. I haven't been on these forums very long, but I think I've accumulated a number of quality posts in my various campaigns. Little Heroes and Monkeygod's Untitled Campaign are, I think, the best examples of more narrative focused games. However, if you'd still like a writing sample, let me know. :-)

Before answering the questions:

1) they usually refer to their own ships as "her" not "it".

2) what about Voyager and Post-Voyager/Nemesis era? "Star Trek Online" era? Kelvin Timeline?

3) races that would be available?

4) Faction? Starfleet/Federation, Klingons, Romulans, etc?

1. I am a Trekkie...OLD school style! I have always enjoyed the human struggles represented in our exploration of the galaxy and dealing with the myriad moral dilemmas that we run across as well. Not so much the space opera aspects.

2. I would consider buying these rules once they are available on Paizo.

3. I'm a regular poster on these boards with a lot of posting history to review at your leisure. My weakness is I sometimes fall behind on my posting, plus I have difficulty in pushing a game along if it is stalling out.

4. I have a lot of favorite episodes, from the TOS and several TNG ones as well. Plus the Wrath of Khan movie has everything I love, from action to deep moral issues too.

5. It is a tie between TOS, and the TMP era (The Motion picture era).

6. I am a prolific poster, but I could submit something via PM if you like.

1. I'm not sure how to reply to that.

2. Post-Voyager would be viable. I don't know anything about STO. I wouldn't want to throw away everything else to do Kelvin Timeline.

3. Any, with the possible exception of Changelings. And obviously limited by time period.

4. Federation Starship. Type and mission chosen by players.

1. Why do you want to play in this campaign?
I love campaigns that are built around the characters as a unit. I find that they're a lot better for having character development that still ends up in line with the broader themes of the campaign. As for why Star Trek? While I'm not a dedicated Trekkie, I love the optimism that permeates the setting. Even in some of the darker series, you can still see the idea that things can and should be better.

2. Are you willing to buy the rules or do you already have them? (This isn’t a deal breaker. I just don’t want to be the only one who has the rules)
I've already got them - I'm all full up on RL games, and I've been hoping for a chance to actually play!

3. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?
I'm a very frequent poster, and can reliably check in at least once per day. I think I do a good job bringing a character to life as a campaign develops, though I tend to start off with broader characterization strokes and fill in their details as I get a better sense of them through play.

As far as weaknesses... My writing style tends to be very beat by beat, almost comic-book panel style. It should be evident if you go through some of my posts. I like it, but if that style doesn't grab you, that could be an issue.

4. What is your favorite episode of Star Trek (could also be a movie) and why? (This is not a lore test. I don’t care if you know everything about it, or even the name. You could say something like “the one where Data is kidnapped by Lore and the Borg.”

(Disclosure, I definitely looked up the name) "The Measure of a Man"

I'm a sucker for discussions of what it means to be "human," and that combined with a great performance by Data/Spiner, plenty of courtroom drama, and the blend of pragmatism and idealism that defines the upper echelons of the Federation makes this one a big win for me.

5. What would be your preferred era of play? TOS, Between TOS and TNG, Early TNG, Post Wolf 359, Dominion War.

Early TNG would be my preference, but I'm flexible.

6. If you don’t have a high post count on the site and want to submit a writing sample, please do. If you have a good sample of posts here, I’ll just poke around and see what you have written in real games.

I don't have tons on this alias, but I'd check out the Masks campaign I'm a part of (actually run by Inxspitter, so a twofer as far as checking out writing styles), or for some shtickier characters my posts as Constantin the Azlant or Narayan Singh. My GM Alias will also have a fair amount of more general posting.

1. Why do you want to play in this campaign? I have heard great things about this RPG and I enjoy Star Trek
2. Are you willing to buy the rules or do you already have them? (This isn’t a deal breaker. I just don’t want to be the only one who has the rules) I would be my local store has the hard copy and I have been eyeing it for some time.
3. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player? I can get into character, this can be good and bad. I tend to give good responses in PbP and cover all bases (conversations, thoughts, mechanics) and I judge those that don't a bit harshly maybe.
4. What is your favorite episode of Star Trek (could also be a movie) and why? (This is not a lore test. I don’t care if you know everything about it, or even the name. You could say something like “the one where Data is kidnapped by Lore and the Borg.” I really like Star Trek Nemesis in its overall tone. Episodes with Q were always fun.
5. What would be your preferred era of play? TOS, Between TOS and TNG, Early TNG, Post Wolf 359, Dominion War. TNG would be my preference
6. If you don’t have a high post count on the site and want to submit a writing sample, please do. If you have a good sample of posts here, I’ll just poke around and see what you have written in real games. I have run a lot of campaigns and played in a few. I actually have 2 accounts because I did not realize that you can not delete aliases and I started to get too many to manage on just one.

GM SuperTumbler wrote:
1. Why do you want to play in this campaign?

Because Star Trek.

I was 1 year old when Star Trek premiered, and my parents were nerdy enough that it was basically always part of my life. Obviously, I remember seeing TOS in reruns through the 70's far more than I ever could the original air dates.

My first hero was Spock.

Willing? Yes. Eager? Not so much. I have an extensive library of RPG material, and the vast majority of it saw very limited use before it hit the shelf never to be pulled out again. I'm leary of continuing to add to a collection of things I don't get to use again.

GM SuperTumbler wrote:
3. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?

Well, as you choose to go hunting for my posts about the site, you'll see that I can write some long descriptive pieces that are inside the character's head, that give a solid impression of who the character is. Check some of the material I've posted as Gudada Purrun for some really nice examples of this.

You'll also see that I don't do that anywhere near consistently enough for it to show as the norm when you review my posts . . ..

I think my biggest weakness as a PBP player is external involvement. Between work and the Boy Scouts, there are weeks where I am hard-pressed to do 3 strong posts in a week. Normally I can do the 5 nights a week requirement without concern. But there are multiple times a year (varies from 1 to 3) where I am out of contact for a week or more for Scouts, and one or two months a year I'll be camping for as many as 3 weekends in the month, doing things for Scouting.

My favorite and my worst are the same piece, actually. Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It was horrible. Terrible. I can't convince myself to watch it when I have so many other options to choose from.

But when they started that (amazingly long) flight scene/camera pan around The Enterprise I started crying. No matter how bad it was, they were bringing it back. Star Trek was back, and there would be more. There was never a question that there would be more. How could that note for the future not be my favorite?

Also high on the list? I can summarize it with one quote. "There are three lights." A marvelous play on inherent human frailty, and how even the strongest and most noble fall completely when stressed far enough. A reminder that none of us are ever as far from behaving in a way we think of as unacceptable as we like to pretend.

GM SuperTumbler wrote:

I'm really pretty open on this. My first knee-jerk is to stick to earlier periods (TOS or Enterprise), but I think that's more about wanting to stick to a cleaner PC/NPC set-up and avoid the later, larger family ships. So, a smaller ship in a later period should do that just as well.

NOT the new movies! They recognize the solid Science Fiction upon which they are based, but they exist as action movies waving at Science Fiction as a setting, not why they exist. They are a lot of fun and great entertainment, but they are Star Trek in name only.

Here is a link to the post history for a character I have really enjoyed.

Gudada Purrun

Combat posts tend to be terse. I assume you will look at one or two other characters.

1. Why do you want to play in this campaign?
I have been a fan of Star Trek ever since I was young. My first real impression was TNG (I had only seen a few sporadic episodes of the original series).

For all that I've never gotten to play in a Star Trek RPG. I have many character ideas depending on the era and focus of the game. Another reason is I want to learn the rules, I picked them up a little while back and have some interest in running a campaign at some point and have started learning but this would get me digging into the rules, properly tackling them. Seeing them in action is intriguing.

There's a lot of potential for co operative storytelling between the players and GM which appeals to me.

2. Are you willing to buy the rules or do you already have them?
I already have the rules and have been idly reading them and trying to get my head around various concepts.

3. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?
Good posting rate
Good grasp of the various eras in Star Trek
On the downside my posts aren't the longest, this can often be more in the case of combat focused games. I enjoy combat but there's only so many ways I can get enthusiastic about saying I swing my sword. However in others this isn't as much of a problem in a social context in character. I find it easier when discussing more philosophical concepts in character, which is a fairly common thing in Star Trek. A good example of this is in a Rise of the Runelords game I am in my character, an Elven Wizard called Azorious has started getting into debates with the group's Cleric of Erastil Wyndel over the benefits of rural versus urban living... my character can see value in both but he's more debating and presenting counter points. A good example of this and the more invested type of posts I want to make is here.

4. What is your favorite episode of Star Trek (could also be a movie) and why? (This is not a lore test. I don’t care if you know everything about it, or even the name. You could say something like “the one where Data is kidnapped by Lore and the Borg.”

It's in the cards-DS9
In some ways you could argue it's an episode of B plots but it works for me. The episode fleshes out so many characters. Julian has a teddy bear since he was a child, but it's not long after we find out about his childhood so this adds weight to his attachment.

Leeta refuses to give it back which shows a different side to Leeta than we normally see. She's usually very nice but this time she's not being nice.

A bunch of the characters get small meaningful developments... Kira's putting a lot of effort into that speech, which she wouldn't have bothered with when the show started. Dr Elias Giger brings some humour to the episode but you can believe eccentric fringe scientists doing bizarre things in Star Trek... I suppose it's deceptively good at world building. That is one of the big strengths of the episode.

It's not the only time we see Nog and Jake up to strange bartering negotiations but the amount of trouble Jake is willing to get into to surprise his father is really nice.

That Bajor's negotiations with the Dominion is the actual B plot, playing second fiddle to the character development is odd but works. That sets up for future developments but in this episode as a stand alone we find out lots of odd details about many of the characters... and it gives us the phrase "souless minions of orthodoxy."

Runners up were-"In the Pale Moonlight" (DS9) as well as "Treachery, faith and the great river." (DS9), "Alliances" (VOY) and "Conundrum" (TNG)... I had to look up most of those names.

5. What would be your preferred era of play? TOS, Between TOS and TNG, Early TNG, Post Wolf 359, Dominion War.
I would suggest post Dominion War, after at least DS9 but possibly after Voyager and Nemesis. I'm not saying leading into Star Trek online, my own knowledge of it is hazy, but if it's after these then we have undiscovered country before us. It could be a few weeks, months, years or decades after the end of the Dominion war but there wouldn't be anything restraining the game to not 'break with the plot' as this can be a problem in some licenced games with a timeline.

In broader strokes I'd prefer TNG over TOS but the wild west days of the alpha and beta quadrant have their own charm.

6. If you don’t have a high post count on the site and want to submit a writing sample, please do. If you have a good sample of posts here, I’ll just poke around and see what you have written in real games.
I submitted one up above in part 3, I do think I have a good posting rate but the length of posts can vary significantly.

1) Not a question, simply an observation.

2) K. STO is post everything else, but it disregard the Kelvin Timeline.

3) Borg? Androids?

4) K. Guess Bird of Prey/War would be too "weird", not going Into Borg stuff.

1. Why do you want to play in this campaign?

1. I love Star Trek (not to any extremes).

2. Are you willing to buy the rules or do you already have them? (This isn’t a deal breaker. I just don’t want to be the only one who has the rules)

2. I would be willing to buy them.

3. Hard to say as I kinda lack experience.

4. Kinda liked Best of Both Worlds, Generation and First Contact, as well as the Kelvin Timeline movies. Mainly for the setting and characters developments, as well as the characters' actions and interactions.

5. What would be your preferred era of play? TOS, Between TOS and TNG, Early TNG, Post Wolf 359, Dominion War.

Voyager/Post-Voyager/Nemesis, TNG (pre and post Wolf 359), TOS and Betwwen TOS and TNG (in order of preferences).

Kevin O'Rourke 440's not kidding about the philosophical debates between Azorious and Wyndel. Both players really get into them. Not really Gudada's kind of thing, but he hears it all . . ..

There aren't specific rules in the Core Book for Borg or Androids, but I think there is an official write up for Data, so something could be reverse engineered.

10 people already. Surprised there is that much interest. Yay!

...obviously the runners up get to play plucky young ensigns to aid the department heads... if only it weren't too ungainly that way!

We could be a party of Klingons, their culture lends itself well to murderhobo-ing. :)

In all seriousness, I'll probably want to play an Earthling Human if accepted. (and if it makes sense for the faction we go with.)

In order to make learning the rules easier for myself, I'm going to be relying heavily on their published adventures. They are all written for a Starfleet crew, so that is the one thing I will have to have. That doesn't mean there can't be some non-Federation folks in the crew.

For those (probably most) who haven't read the rules, one thing that is really cool is that it is set up so you can have only a couple main characters in a scene and some extras played by the other players. It is also possible for a player to take on the role of the episode's guest star.

1. Why do you want to play in this campaign?

Because good Sci-Fi rpg campaigns are few and far between for me, and because I truly enjoy space opera. My favorite TV show of all time is Farscape!

2. Are you willing to buy the rules or do you already have them? (This isn’t a deal breaker. I just don’t want to be the only one who has the rules)

I will purchase a copy if I am selected.

3. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?

I show up, I try to engage with the other players, I try to make memorable characters, and I haven't dropped from a PBP that wasn't dead.

4. What is your favorite episode of Star Trek (could also be a movie) and why? (This is not a lore test. I don’t care if you know everything about it, or even the name. You could say something like “the one where Data is kidnapped by Lore and the Borg.”

I don't remember the entire episode, but for me I have two scenes that are iconic in my mind. The first is the fight between Spock and Kirk. It is iconic and when I was in college a friend and I recreated it in the park blocks. The other is the time on TNG where Picard got stabbed in the heart and laughed.

5. What would be your preferred era of play? TOS, Between TOS and TNG, Early TNG, Post Wolf 359, Dominion War.

Kirk is my favorite captain. hands down. That being said, I would like to go with newer tech, so I would say either TNG or Post Wolf 359

6. If you don’t have a high post count on the site and want to submit a writing sample, please do. If you have a good sample of posts here, I’ll just poke around and see what you have written in real games.

Please feel free to. I am in one of your games =)

I love it when systems do their best to mimic storytelling rather than simulation!

I'm not going to drag this out. I'll wait until Thursday evening to see who else is interested. Then I'll make a decision and we can get to talking.

Do any published adventures have anything on them?

Nothing official that I have seen.

This blog has a lot of unofficial materials. Data type Androids would be tough. They have a lot of narrative power. I mean, Data can basically take over the Enterprise with impunity whenever he wants.

Not all androids are Soong type, throughout the various shows we've seen several androids of varying ability. If GM SuperTumbler allowed an android a different pattern which might be less advanced in some ways could be easier to fit in. Which could be a good balance. Or maybe someone in Star Fleet tried their hand at reverse engineering a Soong type but it hasn't worked out as effective as Data.

I have some odd ideas but I wouldn't be surprised if most GMs would shoot down a Soong Type Android, Changeling, Augment Human (I am saying Augment, mild genetic engineering like Bashir by comparison could be relatively easy to work with), Angosian soldier etc done straight would be hard to balance. A bit of spin to mitigate their potency could work but I imagine whoever get's picked will be tossing out a few oddball concepts but that's for later down the line as far as I'm concerned.

...not that there's anything wrong with playing a human from Earth, plenty of interesting character concepts there.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Hold on, GM, you're saying that a character that has

* Perfect memory
* Greater strength than a Klingon warrior
* The ability to instantly calculate complex math problems in his head
* No sensation of pain or emotions
* The ability to continue functioning solely as a head
* Flawless imitation of any sound or voice
and
* The ability to directly interface with computer hardware

Could cause game balance issues? NO WAY! :)

I think what I am saying is that Data's player was clearly dating the GM.

1. Why do you want to play in this campaign? I have been looking for a good play by post game, and I love Star Trek. I heard about this system on a podcast awhile ago. I thought it sounded like fun, but my in person group would never go for this game. I'm also excited for a game that captures the feel of Star Trek. Combat is great, but a pen and paper rpg gives more room for exploration and interpersonal stuff too.

2. Are you willing to buy the rules or do you already have them? I don't have the full rules. I have the free sample PDF from Drivethru RPG. But, if I get into this game, I will definitely buy the rulebook.

3. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player? My main strength as a player is that I am interested in keeping things moving. It's fine to take time to plan, but I am the one that takes action when my party is stuck. I'm not sure if this is a strength or weakness, but I like to play with my surroundings. My Rogue in my in person D&D game tried to make a flamethrower. It only worked a little, but it was so much fun. That's what happens if you give me an empty wineskin and some cooking oil in the same loot drop. My biggest weakness is that can be a little impulsive and get the party into trouble.

4. What is your favorite episode of Star Trek (could also be a movie) and why? (This is not a lore test. I don’t care if you know everything about it, or even the name. You could say something like “the one where Data is kidnapped by Lore and the Borg.” Darmok. I like languages, and I like weird aliens. I love the idea of potential enemies becoming friends by forming shared narratives.

5. What would be your preferred era of play? TNG is my favorite Era. I'd love to play one of the Luna Class ships from the Titan books. But, I'm open to alternatives.

6. If you don’t have a high post count on the site and want to submit a writing sample, please do. If you have a good sample of posts here, I’ll just poke around and see what you have written in real games.

I definitely don't have a high post count. This is my second post on the site. I fully expect to be able to keep up with a pace of 1-2 posts per day. Here is a writing sample:

"Empo’ee, the third watch helmsman, sat at his post deeply regretting the policy that did not allow drinks on the bridge. He needed coffee if he was going to be up all night. Especially nights like this, when nothing was happening. Then the Romulan ship decloaked. As the Captain tried calmly to engage in peaceful conversation, Empo’ee began preparing several different navigational options. He plotted a course for the nearest star base, he prepared three different kinds of evasive maneuvers, and he plotted a course that brought the Romulan vessel into range for all of their phaser banks. Then he waited for orders.

1. Why do you want to play in this campaign?
I enjoy roleplaying, and love sci fi, but haven't had many opportunities to put them together. Currently I'm scratching that itch with Starfinder, but I've been looking into Star Trek Adventures and it seems quite interesting. I enjoy learning about new rpg systems and trying them out. In fact just this week I was watching YouTube videos on Star Trek Adventures and looking for any pbp games out there, but didn't find much. Your timing is impeccable, heh.

I also like the approach of selecting players and then building a crew of characters together. From your game introduction it sounds like it will be engaging and fun.

2. Are you willing to buy the rules or do you already have them?
I don't have them currently, but would buy the pdf version if I get to play in a game.

3. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?
I am active on these forums on a regular basis, usually able to post every weekday and often checking in multiple times throughout the day. That being said, I do have things come up in my life that occasionally leave me unable to post for a couple days, without knowing in advance that it will happen. That's not too frequent, and depending on the pace of the game may or may not be a problem.

In terms of playing, I enjoy coming up with a character and then interacting with the others in various ways as we tell a story together. I think I'm a decent writer, but you'll have to judge that for yourself, I suppose. I tend to be more reactive than proactive, but that's something I working on to become a more flexible roleplayer.

4. What is your favorite episode of Star Trek (could also be a movie) and why?
I'm going to cheat and give two... First is Darmok - as a person with a passion for linguistics and different cultures, I couldn't help but love that episode as soon as I watched it. Pretty much exactly how I dream it could go, to meet and interact with an unknown race.

The second would be the series finale of TNG. It has Q (any Q episode gets bonus points in my book), Picard being his charming self, and great questions about humanity and where we belong in the universe. We recorded that episode on our VCR and I got a lot of replay value out of the tape.

This is a really hard question, by the way! There are so many other great ones.

5. What would be your preferred era of play? TOS, Between TOS and TNG, Early TNG, Post Wolf 359, Dominion War.
I have no strong preference. Early TNG is closest to my heart, but I'd be willing to try any of them. I've historically watched Star Trek episodes in random orders, often mixing up series, so my sense of proper timeline is not great. But I can refer to wikis with the best of them!

I've been posting and playing on this site since summer last year. Feel free to look at my aliases to check posting style and frequency.

I think what I am saying is that Data's player was clearly dating the GM.

Then I wonder about the players of the Voyager's crew.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

They were total power gamers, and the GM was so fed up with their shenanigans that he set the campaign in an area of space where he could change basically everything so they won't use OOC knowledge.

I'm excited to announce my first Star Trek Adventures crew.

We will be starting a campaign right at the end of the Dominion War or right after the Dominion War. Head over to Discussion and we will start designing our ship and characters.

Everyone else: I think if this goes well I will try to also start up a campaign around the time of TMP or TOS. Let me know if that sounds appealing.

Have fun!

But they ended up turning the Borgs into clowns...

TMP?

TMP?

The Motion Picture. Basically the period right after Kirk returns from his original 5 year mission and when the Enterprise received its refit.

Cool! Thanks, let us know when the gameplay thread is up!

V'ger.

It's up, though since we don't have aliases yet it's hard to dot for tracking. The discussion thread is up, though, with a discussion on starship class and mission role going on right now, with a bit about characters as well.

You can dot as your regular aliases if you like just so you have the campaign in your campaigns. Or you could create an alias with the intention of changing your name before you post ten times.

Have fun! I'll be watching for any future opportunities. If nothing else it's encouraging to see so much interest for the game on these forums. :D

Although I have not got this set of rules I have played older variations and wonder if the ship has need of another crew member?

I would love to get in a TOS/TMP STA game at any time. :)

I have one more crazy week of work next week and then my life gets back to normal for a while. I'll probably spin up a new recruitment for a game set during the movies after that, somewhere around the beginning of May.

Cool!

Free quickstart guide from the publisher, for those who want to peruse the system.

Posted a New recruitment for a campaign set during the movie era. Anyone interested please post over there.

Is there any room for a new crew member? I'm not terribly fond of the TOS era (but I'll throw in for that one if there's no room here) but I LOVE the Dominion War era (which I assume is when you're playing based on the date of 2375 for the Bastion). I'm an active player and a quick poster.

If I can get in on this:

Tomas Von Passlefoot had grown very fat since taking a leadership role in the Technic League. With these new WarMechs handling the basic foot soldiering, he had little to do than give orders and eat vast amounts of little sweets.

He licked the chocolate off of his fingers as he crumpled up the bag that he had ripped from the orphan's hand.

A lovely offering, but it's a far cry from what's actually owed. He turned to the orphan-master. Can you pay?

The orphan-master shook his head sadly. Von Passlefoot shook his head sadly. Only one was sincere about the gesture.

Send the children inside. We'll discuss this man to man.

The orphan-master shuttered the sixteen young children into the orphanage. He turned back to Von Passlefoot, only to see the Technic Leaguer flanked by four hulking WarMechs, their girth eclipsing Von Passlefoot's own.

Von Passlefoot blew into a brass whistle and the robots lifted their arms, long jets of flame emerging from their palms. All but one. The newest version, who had been gifted with limited command intelligence. The Mark V stepped in between the orphan-master and Von Passlefoot.

All life is precious he intoned, using his voice for the very first time. I shall never be used for violence again.

Von Passlefoot stood mouth agape, but only for a moment. He hadn't risen so far in the League without being able to think fast on his feet.

Then we'll melt you to slag and go around you he said, haughtily.

Mark V, who no longer thought of himself in terms of a number or a version thought for a moment. The gears in his head turned and just as quickly as he devised his original philosophy, he revised it.

Some life is precious. He cracked the knuckles of his pressure-driven gauntlets, steam escaping from the joints. I shall be used for violence as circumstances dictate.

The Mark V was VERY advanced, compared to the Mark IIIs that Von Passlefoot had otherwise been trusted with. When he was done with them they had been torn into so much scrap it was impossible to tell if it assembled into three robots or four. He scattered the chunks of metal over the ruins of the orphanage, over the ash that could have been made by sixteen young children...or one very fat man.

I'll check this thread occasionally, but if you don't mind dropping me a PM one way or the other, I'd appreciate it.

How embarrassing! I just realized I didn’t post my application, just my writing sample!

1. Why do you want to play in this campaign?
I'm a big Star Trek fan, I've been terribly interested in this system, but I don't have enough meat friends who like RPGs to support more than one game)
2. Are you willing to buy the rules or do you already have them? (This isn’t a deal breaker. I just don’t want to be the only one who has the rules)
I am willing to buy the rules
3. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?
Strengths: Imaginative, team player. Weaknesses: If the game goes idle for too long I get confused about the plot. I can post from my phone 7 days a week, but I can only write long posts on my WFH days, Tu/Th
4. What is your favorite episode of Star Trek (could also be a movie) and why? (This is not a lore test. I don’t care if you know everything about it, or even the name. You could say something like “the one where Data is kidnapped by Lore and the Borg.”)
There's a lot of DS9 episodes that I'm really fond of, just about anything with Garrik, but really my absolute favorite episode is the one with Wesley Crusher and Ashley Judd fighting against a mind control AR game. It was one of the first episodes I saw and I was absolutely fascinated by the show. From that point on I was totally hooked on TNG.

This is a re-recruitment for an engineer for a TNG era Star Trek Adventures game. Take a look through the thread and let us know if you are interested.

I am interested. We gamed together before I would enjoy gaming with you again.
