I could be misremembering but I think the freighters are lead by someone different from the BoP. I don't think they're officers and they've already displayed poor honor. We should tread carefully, but I don't think our co-escorts are necessarily in on this.

True. The freighters belong to the dishonored hose of D'Gor, a Klingon house that suffered discommendation for engaging in financial shenanigans. Shipping cargo is the only way they can continue to support themselves. Pretty embarassing for a Klingon.

The book states that charting hazards or plotting a course is a diff 3 action, but that’s in the combat section. Is it still difficulty three when we’re at rest and I have time to work out a path? Also, am I allowed to know the difficulty of helm to our destination before we leave? All either action does is lower the difficulty of my helm by 1 or 2. If it’s already difficulty 1 or 0, it’d be easier for me to skip the course plotting and fly blind.

Let's go with difficulty 3 for plotting a course and another difficulty 3 for actually flying the ship. This would be something that could be done with "success with consequences." Even if you fail at the check, you can successfully navigate and just gain some new Complications.

Are we committed to pursuing the Jem'Hadar, or did we want to investigate the freighters further?

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Investigating the freighters, I think, barring objections. I just had computer problems today and haven't been able to post. I'll get a post up ASAP tomorrow.

Are those are two best options? Should we maybe devote some resources to helping to repair the BoP or the disabled freighters? We're more or less stranded here, and we're not equipped to battle a Jem'Hadar fleet

Regardless of where we go, we'll need a safe path, so I'll do my roll in anticipation of the orders.

Chart hazard (anomalies), Reason 10 + Conn 4=TN 14. Spending 1 momentum: 3d20 ⇒ (6, 1, 13) = 20
4 successes
aid from ship's sensors (11)+conn (3)=TN 14: 2d20 ⇒ (11, 7) = 18
2 more successes for a total of 3 gained momentum, spending 2 to also add "Jem'Hadar fleet as a second charted hazard, one point to replenish the momentum I spent
Untapped potential: 1d6 ⇒ 3
0 added momentum
Any helm roll to avoid either the anomaly or the Jem'Hadar will be 1 difficulty

Armed with the knowledge of the anomaly's sensor profile and the location of the Jem'Hadar fleet, Eliza tags the threats across her navigational charts. Even if they move or shift, she'll be able to identify and skirt them.

It's been awhile since Momentum has been published, but I think it's:

Also, given the pace of the game, I'm going to roll my helm roll whenever we do decide to go to wherever we decide to go

Go to Warp: Control (11) + Conn (4)=TN 15, Difficulty 1, spend 1 power: 2d20 ⇒ (19, 1) = 20

2 successes, adding 1 momentum to pool

Improved warp drives: 1d6 ⇒ 1
No change to power spent

Momentum 11, Threat 14

Yes sir, engaging course to Wherever we're going at warp factor Whatever she's ordered to set the speed to.

Eliza deftly plots the course against the chart she previously mapped out, sharing the navigational data to whomever is running the communication's station to share with the rest of the convoy. When she has the Bastion pointed in the right direction, she smoothly engages the warp drive and the ship slides effortlessly into faster than light travel.

She sighs contentedly and spins her chair away from the console. I've read so much about the Constellation frame, but this is my first time behind the wheel. She has more kick than I expected, but I...I have some good ideas about her.

Eliza recalled some essays she wrote back at the Academy, essays that no one assigned and no one especially wanted to read. Essays with titles like "Stop fighting physics: Everything you teach about momentum arresting is wrong" or "Evasive actions or firing solutions: Why not both?" or "The Cunningham Maneuver: A six point guide." Essays that were returned to her with comments like "Why would you write this?" or "Please promise me you'll never do anything in this essay."

A ship with redundant warp nacelles? One that can go from full stop to full impulse in less than five seconds? Oh yes. Yes...she had some good ideas indeed.

You'd best be clearing it with me before making any of your fancy modifications to my nacelles, Miss Cunningham.

Frowning, Tobin says, "Do you think polaric energy explosions could account for the subspace distortions?"

He shakes his head, and says, "I see a number of possibilities, and all of them bad. Including the possibility that D'Gor purposely let the cargo be taken."

Before proceeding with any further actions, he looks to his first officer to consult, though his body language seems to be open to thoughts from any of his command crew. "I don't have much experience with Klingons, but my impression is that Captain Akul is an honourable Klingon, and may not have known what the transports were carrying. Do you think he could help get answers from D'gor?"

My thought is there's more polaric weaponry/devices in use already, that getting answers is more important than stopping the one stolen shipment. Especially if following the Jem'Hadar takes us one on many with a Jem'Hadar fleet. :-) But, I don't want to OOCly make the decision for everybody, thus Tobin leaving himself open for feedback here.

Also, sorry again for the delay. I've been sick and on top of that now two days of computer issues.

this is a tough one. I don’t think the anomalies are caused by polaric weapons (those anomalies tear holes in space time, according to Memory Alpha). On one hand, can we let these weapons fall into the Dominion’s hand? On the other, is anything gained by investigation in the middle of nowhere. Maybe we tip Akul off en route to DS9 and we deal with them in a friendly area surrounded by Klingon of honor and Federation ships (and, again ooc, one of the greatest investigative minds in the galaxy.

In character, however...

While prior conduct suggests that D’gor would act dishonorably, it also makes him more inclined toward acts of self preservation. If he was responsible for the theft, there’d be no need to damage his own ships in the process of the robbery. I also suspect that the subspace anomalies were in place before our arrival. The Jem’Hadar likely used existing phenomenon as an ambush point, and I can help the convoy avoid them for our journey. Perhaps we focus on repairing the damaged ships and get the heck out of contested space...sir?

Stress 5/10

Are the anomalies consistent with polaric technology?
"Let me double check my sensor readings with that in mind Captain." He taps away on the console.

The subspace distortions don’t show any evidence of tachyons or temporal eddies that would be present in the kind of spatial-temporal disruptions caused by polaric ions. They also aren’t historically out of place near the Argolis cluster. This is a place of strange subspace anomalies going back as far as anyone knows. Which doesn’t mean that no one is manipulating them.

Best guess, the captain of the convoy sold dangerous weapons to the Dominion. The Jem Hadar set a trap, ambushed the freighters and disabled the escorts. We could go after them to get it back, but we’d probably die. We have enough evidence to prove that they were carrying the weapons and circumstantial evidence that the Dominikn knew what they were looking for. That’d be enough for Klingon justice

Jalla nods along slowly before she gives her assessment to Tobin, "Lieutenant Cunningham's reasoning is sound. There are too many potential variables for us to be sure of any judgment, not the least of which is the potential attack of a foe we cannot presently withstand. Let us repair and rearm, and continue our deliberations in safety.
I do agree that Captain Akul's aid will be paramount in appropriately dealing with any subterfuge from these freighters, sir."

Lt. zh’Qjaqir, you’re more familiar with the Bastion’s communication suite than I. I’ve plotted a safe course to DS9, but if some of our convoy is compromised, we might put everyone in danger by advertising our course. Is there a way for us to share the benefits of the navigation without sharing the specifics of our course. Maybe send the navigation in encrypted format so their computer can interpret the path but it can’t be shared?

Stress 5/10

"Polaric energy isn't being used to exacerbate the natural anomalies around the Argolis cluster but it was worth double checking."

Jalla's antennae perk up at the interesting challenge, "Encrypting the data is simple enough, but to prevent any traitors from passing along the information, I'll need to set up some sort of dynamically shifting encryption, where the act of communicating it via subspace transmissions renders it inaccessible.

I've done some theoretical work on some similar concepts in the past; I'll see what can be done."

I think there might be some confusion, so I worked up a composited map in case it is needed. On the map, your position is marked with some a light blue cross hairs and your course to DS9 is marked in magenta. The Jem Hadar are in the Argolis Cluster, which is just "north" of your current position. You aren't in danger going to DS9 along the marked course, only if you want to go into the Cluster in pursuit of your attackers.

I might be misunderstanding the situation, but is pursuit even feasible? I thought we were vastly outnumbered...

Feasible, yes. Easy, no. The battle cruiser outclasses you quite a bit, but there is a lot of cover and the opportunity to be sneaky and limit your engagements within the cluster. I'm not intending to create a situation where you can't choose to be bold and have to turn tail and run. But if you would rather be more cautious, that is fine too. Dramatically, I think it is reasonable to brashly pursue them, to take your time here and figure out what is going on, or to haul what you can to DS9 and come back when you are in a better situation. All of those seem like things that could happen in an episode of Star Trek. Each of those options has risks and rewards.

Tobin nods to Eliza, seeming to welcome the suggestion, but after a moment's thought says, "I understand. I don't want to let them have it anymore than you do, Lieutenant Cunningham, but I have to agree with Lieutenant zh'Qjaqir. It's too risky after our previous damage, not to mention we'd be abandoning our ordered escort duty. But trust me, this isn't over."

Straightening, he says, "Open a secure channel to the Mupwl." Once this is done, he says, "Captain Akul, this is Captain Tobin Dell. I'm afraid I have to inform you that when we attempted to ascertain the status of the transports after the battle, our scans revealed evidence that they had been smuggling Polaric Ion technology under a cloaking field. I'd like to request your assistance in investigating this while we continue on towards Deep Space Nine."

I'm thinking we could do an away team to investigate and do repairs, with Tobin staying back this time, letting some of the other characters take the spotlight. Especially with my sore throat slowing down my posting rate.

Making this decision, I've also figured out that I would not make a good captain in real life. Here I am, hedging over this decision for the last couple of hours because I'm worried I'll make the game less fun for everybody if I make the wrong one. I can only imagine how difficult these decisions would be if real lives were in the balance.

Eliza nearly opens her mouth to argue, but thinks better of it. After a beat, her response is uncharacteristicly clipped.

Of course sir. Readying a course to Deep Space 9 on your order. We can use my warp roll when you’re ready for us to leave

I had such a good idea too! I was going to suggest we use our limited ability to generate these anomaly waves to trigger the Polaric material and then book it out of there before a hole is ripped in space-time.

Akul appears onscreen, his forehead now bandaged. The bridge around him is in better shape than previously, at least it is not venting gases from damaged systems.

"Captain, I'm disappointed to see that you have chosen not to pursue our attackers. But what you say of Polaric Ion technology is troubling. Polaric Energy research has been banned for a hundred years. I will order the crews of the freighters confined to quarters and replace them with members of my own crew. And since we are in Federation territory, I will concede the investigation of the freighters in question to you."

This sounds like a new scene.

Captain's log, supplemental: We are dispatching an away team to investigate the signs of Polaric Ion energy on the Klingon freighters. Because of the ongoing subspace distortions, I have dispatched the a shuttle to transport them.

I assume Eliza will pilot the shuttle and our Andorians will go to conduct the investigation. Whether our Captain, Doctor, and Engineer want to go, stay back, or send a supporting character (an option I would love to explore if anyone else would be up for it) is up to them.

Eliza cedes control of the helm to an ensign. I presume you want me to fly us to the “empty” freighter? What, precisely are we looking for? There isn’t anything harmless that leaves these traces and the Jem’Hadar knew exactly which ships to target. If you don’t mind me saying, it’ll hardly take an Android in a deerstalker to get to the bottom of this one.

She takes a deep breath Perhaps I can bring someone from the engineering department with us? If nothing else we can speed work on repairing their damaged engines.

Given that Captain Dell is on reduced posting while he’s sick, I’m just going to assume he’s ok with that and head to the shittlecraft.

She settled in behind the helm of the shuttlecraft, comfortable behind the helm of the small craft. When everyone was on board, she jaunted over to the empty freighter.

Do I need a roll here?

You don't need a roll, but you can make one. Moving the short distance between the Bastion and the freighter is a Difficulty 0 check, but you can make a check to bank momentum. Also, note that Momentum goes down by 2 when we move to a new scene. So we are at Momentum 9 Threat 14.

As an invited guest on a ship recently commandeered by the Klingon military (our partners in peace), Eliza didn’t think it prudent to enter the ship with her phaser drawn. She takes point as commanded, but does so as an ally to the Klingon soldiers who now control the ship.

Did Akul tell us who is now in charge?

As you lower the exit ramp of the shuttle and enter the hangar bay of the Klingon freighter, you see three Klingon warriors, each wearing the typical grey brown armor. While they wear disruptors and carry D'k tahg daggers, they hold no weapons in their hands.

"I am Surgh, second to Captain Akul. We have secured the crew of the freighter. They will not cause you any difficulty in your investigations. I have been ordered to cooperate fully with you. Follow me to the cargo bay."

You notice a small puddle of orange blood congealing on the deck behind him.

Surgh turns on his heel, not waiting for you. He is an impressive individual. You might be cowed by his size or intrigued by the idea of facing off against him, but you can't ignore him.

The cargo bay is adjacent to the hangar bay, so it is a short trip. The doors split in two and slide open. As expected, the cargo bay is empty.

Like a space cargo ship, the ship consists of a small bridge, some spartan crew quarters, a hangar bay, and a small engineering section. Most of the ship, amidships, is the cargo section.

Gareb doesn't waste any time and starts scanning the cargo bay. "Hill, will you have a look at what augmentations have been made to the cargo bay. If everyone else has a poke around while I try to clear up these readings."

1. Does it look like the polaric energy was being focused towards being weaponised or for utility purposes? 2. With a good scan of the trace elements here are there any ways to make it unstable, modulating the phasers to a particular frequency or augmenting a photon torpedo? 3. Is there a unique identifier that would easily let us identify/track a ship carrying the polaric energy that was in this cargo hold.

What you have here are just traces of polaric ions and probably something that generated them, so lets call that a polaric ion generator. Let's compare it to uranium and say that this appears to enriched, though that isn't the word that I would want to use in game. Maybe the right word is highly energized, or you could come up with something. You want to make the missing ions unstable when you encounter them? If so, you could use a photon torpedo, which would increase Threat. Let's say that the energized polaric ions actually create nanofractures in subspace all the time. You could modify a photon torpedo to deliver its yield into those fractures, making them larger.3. Those nanofractures are unique enough that you could use them to track a ship carrying them, but they heal pretty quickly, only lasting for a few hours.
