Sten cusses a bit as he retrieves his weapon from the snow and swingsit around again to try and smash the beast off his companion.
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 Ok, now we are cooking.
1d10 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

It is still alive after that hit; Alistair, the CMD roll was for it's turn; you can elect to try various things on your turn.
See this HANDY GRAPPLE CHART for some options.
Keith S.
Taryn is on the ground but can crawl away. Alistair escapes the grasp of the thing.
I think we need Victasys and Ianto to go (but sometimes I lose track when we move to a new page).
Keith S.
The creature lets out an odd sigh and flops into the snow, dead. Dark red blood stains its fur.
You have just fought a Tatzlwyrm - a snow based variety. I did tone it down just a tad, as it seemed pretty tough for a few first levels to deal with early on in an adventure.
Out of combat time now. What next?
Keith S.
You find nothing of value (either with that roll, or a much better one).
Healing before you move forward? Camping?
Keith S.
The party continues to trudge through the snow, fat flakes still falling heavily. The ground off the trail is better than 6 inches deep with snow now. With full dark upon you, it is cold. Very cold.
[soon you will need to make a survival check against cold or risk becoming fatigued]
You come upon a tree. It is an oak tree, but has lost its leaves. Strange feathered bundles are hanging from the branches, swaying and shifting with the wind. Some snow clings to them as well.
The tree is wide, with a trunk over 3 feet in diameter.
Cadell
|
Cadell looks the tree and its odd feathered features. He detects magic first then inspects the feathers looking for clues to why its leaves are no longer present.
Survival Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
It is getting colder, if anyone is chilled under their cloaks speak to me. I have ways to prevent you from freezing to death.
Cadell cast endure elements on himself.
Alistair, the Winter Wanderer
|
Chilly, HA. I think I'll be alright. Alistair waits for information from the party members more suited for the task.
Pretty sure I auto succeed any Fort check due to cold weather. Unless it's really, really cold.
Keith S.
The party shivers and stares at the tree with the odd fetishes.
BoulderShoulder
Sten finnaly stumps his way up with the rest of the group."Unless they shrunk the young lady down ta a more manageable size ta hide her in dem trees, I think we should hurry along."
Keith S.
Ianto also detects a dispersed evil around the tree and in this area in general.
Which I neglected to type earlier.
Keith S.
There is simply a general malaise of evil about the area. The weird feathered bundles seem to be some of the stronger evil, but there is also evil in the wood around the oak tree.
As a herbilogical note, most of the trees are ash and oak, and have lost their leaves. A few cedars dot the wood as well.
BoulderShoulder
"Well we had better make up our minds soon. I don't like the chances of finding the trail should we take to much time."
Keith S.
The trees are not likely mutated; they have lost their leaves in the snow and cold.
I am going to make the leap and assume one of you studies the bundles a bit closer. They are actually the bodies of crows, pierced by many small arrows and then hung in this tree.
Keith S.
And as you stand there in silence, you hear an odd TINK sound and BoulderShoulder notices a small arrow stuck in the tree, which had apparently just deflected off his armor.
Keith S.
It is the players turn to do something. You do not see any foes.
You can make perception checks to try to spot the enemy, or do something else if you wish.
BoulderShoulder
"Well this is going to be annoying. Anyone have a bottle of fire for these trees?"
Sten will loose his form from his waist and look around.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 10
Keith S.
Alistair, as he looks about, spots a small figure, perhaps a foot high, standing on a branch 30 feet or so away. He is aiming a small bow at Alistair, as a matter of fact.
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16 to hit Alistair
and 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15 to hit Ianto
Alistair is hit and takes 1 pt of damage, and needs to make a DC11 fort save against numbing cold, or be staggered for 1 round.
Keith S.
@ Alistair - your stat sheet shows a +4 vs cold conditions and +1 saving throw against cold effects? And a +2 against cold climates?
I would say this is a cold based magic attack, not cold weather conditions.
@ DaWay...what does that mean to say Faeries time to sleep?
Perhaps a spell name would help?
Keith S.
Yes. My point is it is useful to me to post things like area of affect, type of save, or etc.; maybe even a link to the effect, so I can figure out what it is a bit easier.
Keith S.
Sprite saving throw 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6, and the sprite tumbles off the branch, falling gently into a snow bank and slumbers away.
The wood is quiet again.
For the moment.
Characters may take a round's worth of action.
