Ascan pays attention to the survival course eager to get out and eat. As he searches the surrounding area he has enough success that he is able to even pick and choose his favorite mushrooms and vegetation. Keeping an eye on the others he's happy to see most everyone else fed themselves with equal ease.

Hubert sang quietly to himself while he foraged,
"Deep inside the forest is a door into another land, here is our life and home.
We are staying here forever in the beauty of this place all alone.
We keep on hoping that maybe there's a world where we won't have to run,
and maybe there's a time to call our own, living free in harmony and majesty.
Take me home, take me home"

Survival: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27 That's nine extra people worth of rations, if we need them.

At first, Harlow finds the usual leaves, berries, and mushrooms. Then, suddenly, he notices a patch of flowers that he knows have edible bulbs. He digs up more than enough to sate his hunger, putting the rest in his pack for later, or perhaps for someone else, if they need it.

As he forages, Harlow looks for a straight, stout stick that he can use as a walking stick or, in a pinch, a weapon. Perhaps if I figure out a way to put a point on it I could use it as a spear.

Jolly pulls two large books bound in strong leather with colorful pictures. One is the 'Flora and Fauna Guide' written by druids. The other is a book of maps--'Your Kingdom' written by the Royal Cartographer.

Jolly shows you how to read the maps and look at the catalogue of creatures and plants. Some of the creatures, such as winged horses and pixie dragons seem exotic, but Jolly assures you they exist.

He hands you each a quiver of 20 crude arrows to practice with.

You spend the rest of the day hiking well past twilight. The rugged pace causes you to push the last hour in a daze with feet numb.

The final hour of the day's hike left Hubert feeling more physically exhausted than he'd ever felt in his whole life, but that was a good thing. That was why he was here - to get plenty of exercise and build up his endurance. He found a comfortable patch of earth and settled down for the night.

Enjoying the first day's march, Liam thinks, Jolly sets a good pace. Those books were interesting. I wonder if we all get one when we become rangers? Speaking up, he asks, "Jolly, those books you showed us. Does every ranger get those?"

Late in the day, Liam notices some of the others flagging. He slows to match their pace. Stepping over to the Iberion in particular, he tries to encourage them to keep going. "Not much longer now. We'll be there soon. Just one foot in front of the other."

When they do make camp, the young man helps to set up. He make sure that everyone has made it and distributes all of the excess he foraged throughout the day to those who do not have enough before settling down for the night.

"I??? Umm..I did ..well nothing! I was an orphan from a place called Glenrothe in Picta. I was recently given over to the local orphanage and from them to here. I suppose that they felt if I was able to survive on my own for a number of years in Picta, maybe I would make a good Ranger. Who was I to argue with that! What did you study? Ah, looks like we are here...see I told you that you could make it! Now lets set about getting the camp setup!"

Jolly prepares a 'hot camp' with a roaring fire. The berries and mushrooms make an excellent soup with a few spices he has found.

The next morning he scratches his head. "Let's hold off on shooting the bows for now. See what you learned yesterday."

After finally arriving at the grove Ascan looks to Harlow and says,"Well we made it to the grove. We should set up a camp and meet up with Jolly and the others."

Jolly sees everyone at the grove except Liam and Morvas, and they were not far off. He is back with that pair in less than ten minutes.

"Good!"

After more hiking he explains the situation:
"We need to work on your stalking skills. The ability to move unnoticed."

With that, a short, mousy man touches Jonah on the shoulder startling him. The man is wearing a cloak that blends into the grove of trees and some natural foliage adorns the hood of his cloak.

"I am The Wisp. As a member of the Shadows, we provide the kingdom help in areas the rangers cannot. Just like the druids, we are full Auxiliaries to the Rangers. We move around cities and people as comfortably as the rangers move in open spaces. Many of us have led colorful lives and been offered the King's Pardon to work on his behalf. We are going to have you trained to avoid detection. If you can't be targeted, you can't be killed."

The Wisp instructs you on how to stay out of sight. Things you hadn't thought of, like predicting shadows. Which typed of cover will break up your silhouette. How to walk on your toes to soften your step.
