Slyph Silvar
|
Slyph eyes the tracks closely, and after consulting with his leaned companions grows noticeably more pale. He mumbles to himself, "Perhaps those distasteful words will be of more use than I thought..."
Megferra the Rose
|
I love getting that 0 on my Perception checks. Meg is too cool for tracks. 8)
Meg shudders, not so much from the chilling wind and rain, but from Matteo's revelation of the creatures that left the tracks. "Didn't we fight some babaus before, Matteo, at the wedding? I'm not looking forward to meeting these creatures, but it would be best if we get rid of them."
Turning toward the manor and squinting against the dark and the rain, Meg pushes on, drawing her magical, golden scimitar. "We should get inside--and get ready for whatever guardians await us."
| Cedric Thargayrian |
Well the most important things are that you will need some good aliened or cold iron weapon and that they are probably resistant to magic and well protected by most elements. So burning them with fire won't be much of an option.
Ezren will tell the party about the difference between them. (see DM post)
Omrax the Bold
|
"If we do encounter the demons, I am sure the might of the Inheritor will break their defenses. Lady Megferra, I think you would agree. When fire avails not, the strength of cold steel will prevail."
Megferra the Rose
|
"I think we should check the stables first," Meg suggests. "Maybe we don't have to say that awful pledge to Asmodeus when we're only in the stables, and I'd rather not have some big spiky demon howler sneak up on us once we're in the manor."
Matteo the Arcanist
|
For future reference, Matteo always relays information from Knolwedge checks, unless I state otherwise :)
Matteo's face turns grim as he studies the tracks. "Babaus... [insert babau description here.] And howlers too, it would seem. [insert howler description here." He turns to Meg. "Indeed, these are the creatures that we encountered at the wedding. I hope you all have cold iron weapons, or other means of harming creatures from the Abyss. Keep in mind that Babaus have an innate resistance to magic, as do many other Abyssal denizens."
At the suggestion to stay in the stables, Matteo grimaces. "You would have us rest in such a filthy place? All so you may not have to utter simple words?" he rolls his eyes in annoyance.
Megferra the Rose
|
"Oh, I don't mean to say we should stay in the stables to hide from the storm," Meg says, making a face and sticking her tongue out at the unpleasant thought. "That would be icky. I meant we should go in to kill the howler."
It sounds like 2 votes for the stables, 1 for the manor, and 2 for whatever. To the stables? Meg will offer to go in first!
Slyph Silvar
|
If people start going to the stable Slyph will follow glumly, if no one moves Slyph will pull his hood up tighter and walk towards the manor.
| GM Helaman |
It sounds like the stables...
The howler tracks lead to the stable by way of the shattered wagon—its surface is marred by rents from the beast’s savage claws.
On the stable’s outer eastern wall, a narrow staircase rises toward three doors, likely to rooms rather than a hay loft entry.
Map is up... let me know how you are approaching, if you are going upstairs first or into the stable proper. I will be in a world of crap at work for the next 24 hours. Posting will be sporadic for the next day or so
Omrax the Bold
|
Omrax will join Meg heading into the stables.
"Aye Lady Megferra. Destroying the evil howling creature will be a good start. If there are other fiends around, we will hunt them down as well."
Megferra the Rose
|
I'm gonna go ahead and adjust my daily Paladin resource count--I don't want anyone to get confused when Omrax and I start using our abilities and the numbers go in different directions. :P
1d2 ⇒ 2
"We should check upstairs first. If there are any people around here, I think they'll be up there, and we won't want to leave them alone with these monsters on the loose." Meg keeps her sword drawn and makes her way up the stairs, slowly pushing open the door and looking inside.
Megferra the Rose
|
Meg is going in first, unless someone rushes past her or something. This feels like a stealthier moment for her: let's see what I can do:
Stealth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Omrax the Bold
|
Omrax will follow along-side or closely behind Meg, making no attempt at a slow, stealthy approach.
"Lady Megferra, I have been accused of many things, alas being sneaky is not one of them."
He draws his blade and heft shield. If Meg continues to step quietly, he will pause momentarily to detect evil ahead of her.
Megferra the Rose
|
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Meg's feet start to slide on the slick stairs, but she elegantly moves with the motion until she can steady herself. She smiles widely at the turn of events. She whispers, "It seems that Shelyn smiles on my grace today. Let's hope it keeps up!"
Omrax the Bold
|
"I am sure Shelyn provides you more grace than Iomedae will provide me. Those stairs look icy more than just wet. Do you want to throw down a rope or suggest we try another route?"
Omrax the Bold
|
Omrax sheathes his blade and reaches into his haversack to pull out a coil of rope. He knots it and tosses it up to Megferra.
"Lady Megferra, please see if this will suffice. "

| 1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
"I find that talking does not usually aids one's endeavours in being stealthy..." Matteo whispers. "Also, I have always found it interesting how much blame people put on their patron deities. I myself prefer to worship the All-Seeing Eye, but I would not accuse him of not having grace on me if I failed to ascend these stairs. I also would not grant him thanks for allowing me to not slip..." He continues on this rant for a few moments.
| GM Helaman |
With care and with the rope you are all able to ascend without further dangers.
Love the approach taken with her build. Its a great character
The three rooms located above the stables are littered with mundane trinkets and clothing. A general look around reveals 12 diaries written by different people. These memoirs all have similar last entries (from various times over the last few months) describing their incredible “good fortune” at stumbling upon the isolated manor during cruel weather, and their intent to wait the storm out within its walls. The most recent entry, only 2 days old, belongs to Benn Anders.
This damned storm ain’t relenting. My wife Marta, caught something fierce, and through her rasping coughs begs me to let our family rest in Ostergarde. I’ve told her over and over that only evil lives there, we’d be better off to die in this storm.
I can’t delay any longer. My wife hallucinates and poor Tilly shakes violently. Young Tarcey holds strong, but I’m afraid we’re going to die in this weather if we don’t get warm, and fast. Damn it! I’ve made up my mind—I’m taking my family to the stable by the manor, to get out of the weather. Surely we’ll be safe if we just avoid the manor itself.

"Well, either he met his demise here or wandered to the manor and met it there. I doubt he left without his diary intentionally. Him and many others. I wonder how long this has been the case? " the knight tries to find the oldest diary or other clues.
search : 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Great, that is probably the only 20 I roll on this mission . :-(.
Megferra the Rose
|
I love how grumpy Matteo is. :3
Meg smiles at Matteo as he climbs up the rope she holds. "Well of course you wouldn't thank the All-Seeing Eye for helping you not trip! We don't walk with our eyes!" Meg declares quietly. "Shelyn requires that I perfect an art, though, and I doubt I could have kept my balance if I were not practiced in dance! Also," she adds cheerfully, lightly tapping her eyepatch with one pointer finger, "I'm not exactly the one to be All-Seeing, you know?"
---
"This is from just two days ago..." Meg thinks out loud after reading the diary entry, with a look of concern. "This Anders family should be here--except for those tracks..." the paladin trails off, not wanting to dwell on what may have happened here. Meg sighs, then assumes a more determined resolve. "Omrax, I think we should check for any presence of evil in this place," she suggests, calling on Shelyn to reveal any fiends to her. Casting Detect Evil and scanning the barn.
If we do look around the lower part, are there stairs down from the loft or anything?
Slyph Silvar
|
Assuming Meg shares this...
Slyph grows tense at the new of evil underfoot. Speaking softly to try and not be overheard by what ever is below them, "Do you think we could pry up a few of these floor boards at dispatch it from up here?"
Megferra the Rose
|
"I'm not sure," Meg murmurs, still focused on the spell. "Let me see if I can tell what we're up against." Meg concentrates, trying to determine the nature of the evil beneath them.
Matteo the Arcanist
|
Matteo can't help but laugh begrudginly at Meg's retort. He says nothing, but instead makes some notes in a note book.
At the mention of something evil beneath them, Matteo straightens, and moves himself into a corner away from the aura. "Is it extraplanar?"
| GM Helaman |
Map updated - Purple line indicates your current position relative to map - map has 4 'x' on it to indicate APPROX position of the sources
It is a strong aura of evil - While the ability doesn't discern between undead, clerics and outsiders, just helping you feel those sources more strongly, it is unlikely that the sources of evil are commoners or simply aligned creatures. After concentration you believe there are four sources in the stables beneath these rooms... maybe 10 feet or so beneath you.
Slyph Silvar
|
I would have placed myself in the bottom left square near the cart but, I'm currently unable to move icons on the map. Slyph will drink a Bombers Eye.
Omrax the Bold
|
I tried to move Omrax and Slyph icons, but cannot either. If Slyph is lower-left, then place Omrax at upper-left on the purple square.
During the approach, Omrax will call a divine bond spirit into his blade (becoming +2 longsword).
"There is no time like the present when evil needs to be destroyed."
Megferra the Rose
|
Do we have a light source? I imagine it's pretty dark in the storm. I also took the liberty of moving Omrax and Sylph to the spaces you said you wanted to be in.
"Let's cleanse this ugliness," Meg agrees, taking out her Shining Wayfinder with her free hand and activating its magic.
Casting Protection from Evil (CL 3rd) from my Shining Wayfinder.
| GM Helaman |
The stables seem empty enough. There is a large hay pile in one corner and some closed stalls... but they bump slightly in the wind indicating they aren't locked.
There is a slightly fetid musty smell coming out of the place. If there is something in there then its waiting for you.
Moved the others down
Megferra the Rose
|
"I think they're hiding..." Meg whispers. She puts away her Wayfinder, and pulls out a flask of holy water. She passes it to Sylph, since he is better with such weapons, then pulls out her potion of Darkvision, keeping hold of it in case of any demonic tricks. She maintains her Detect Evil, and points to where the evil resides, saying: "Sylph, throw this at the hay pile--that ought to teach them!"
