Lavode fires another bolt of fire at the giant but the beast's frantic failing is hard to predict and the bolt flies a little too far to the left.
Missed due to melee

Boswick takes advantage of the Giant's flailing though and waits for an opening to strike. Timing his attack perfectly his is able to step in and sever the giant's leg at the knee. As the monster falls to the ground the Paladin knocks its arm out of the way and brings his sword down again this time driving it deep into the creatures's neck. The Giant is dead before it could hit the ground.

Among the wreckage you find evidence that one of the many caravan's was the missing Pathfinder caravan. Also interestingly enough there are a number of signs pointing to a recent battle here. Quite a few arrows litter the ground and some of the bodies seem fresh. In the pile of broken burning wagons there is a strangely mutilated body. The only item of obvious worth that remains is a pair of finely carved ivory tusks that were hidden by an overturned wagon.

Survival or Heal DC 25:

A few of the bodies, both giant and human, are marred with claw marks inconsistent with either giant or the human combatants. The deformed skeleton in the fire is that of a harpy, its skull has been crushed in by a single massive blow.

GM, any idea how long since the first caravan was destroyed? How long since the most recent was destroyed? Any tracks indicating a direction of travel for the winning army?

The Veteran's Vault: MAP

Hard to tell without a decent Survival check. Your best guess would be that the oldest is a few months old while the newest is a few days. The missing pathfinder caravan would have been through here about a week ago. The Road to the base of the stairs seems the best bet as far as finding the "winning army".

Almost forgot, does the number of bodies look roughly correct for the number of wagons and guards which could be expected or does it look like there could have been many captives which might or might not still be alive somewhere?
.
Other than that, I can't think of any more questions.

Knowledge Nature

DC 14:

harpies are CE Medium monstrous humanoids

DC 19:

harpies have captivating songs:
Captivating Song (Su) A harpy's song has the power to infect the minds of those that hear it, calling them to the harpy's side. When a harpy sings, all creatures aside from other harpies within a 300-foot spread must succeed on a DC 16 Will saving throw or become captivated. A creature that successfully saves is not subject to the same harpy's song for 24 hours. A victim under the effects of the captivating song moves toward the harpy using the most direct means available. If the path leads them into a dangerous area such as through fire or off a cliff, that creature receives a second saving throw to end the effect before moving into peril. Captivated creatures can take no actions other than to defend themselves. A victim within 5 feet of the harpy simply stands and offers no resistance to the harpy's attacks. This effect continues for as long as the harpy sings and for 1 round thereafter. This is a sonic mind-affecting charm effect

The Veteran's Vault: MAP

The ancient ruins at the base of the stairs lurk in the perpetual shadow of the monstrous cliffs known as the Storval Rise. The stairs form a fifty-foot-wide cleft cut deep into the cliff. The stairs bear the weight of the millennia lightly; though rounded with age and cracked in a few places, they remain level from end to end. Each ponderous two-foot-deep step stretches two feet upwards. Massive landings flanked by monstrous structures obscure the top of the stairs from the bottom. The angle of the sun means shadows blanket the entire length of the Stairs, and will probably do so all day except for a short period around midday.
Massive statues flank the stairs; they rise three hundred feet above the base of the stairs and proudly looking out over the surrounding countryside as if standing guard. Each statue holds an immense tome in one arm and a deadly looking glaive in the other.
On either side of the statues, buildings carved directly out of the cliff face rise from the valley floor. The gargantuan proportions of the structures make it difficult to judge their height. They rise nearly to the top of the plateau, four hundred feet above the valley floor.

DC 20 Knowledge(history):

The statues represent Karzoug, the Runelord of Greed.

The Party does not see any movement on the stairs but Oily black smoke pours from a large central opening on the north side of a landing almost halfway up the steps. You feel like you can make it there in a few hours by climbing.

Movement on the Stairs:

The stairs are built for giants; each step is 2 feet high and 2 feet deep. The stairs counts as extremely difficult terrain for the purposes of ascending or descending; movement by Medium or smaller creatures costs 3 squares of movement per square traveled, or 4 squares of movement per diagonal square traveled. Medium and smaller characters cannot charge or take a 5-foot-step up or down the stairs. Large or larger creatures treat the stairs as difficult terrain as normal.

"Let's go!"

Boswick begins climbing the steps toward the middle of the stair.

Muttering under his breath, Lavode follows Boswick up the Stairs.

The Veteran's Vault: MAP

Sorry meant to have this up yesterday

The stairs cut deep into the cliff at this point, and walls tower fifty feet or more overhead on either side. A massive landing, fifty feet to a side, offers a brief respite from the relentless climb. To the north and south, large hewn caverns with elaborate facades plunge deep into the solid bedrock of the cliff, three to the north and one to the south. Though the sun shines in the sky above, the landing is in the shadow of the walls towering on either side.
A macabre scene of torture and ruin defiles the landing. Flies swarm around four human-sized corpses held vertical by impaling stakes. Another lifeless body is suspended twenty feet above the landing, its limbs dislocated by the merciless pull of taut ropes affixed to hooks in the walls.
A pair of tortured hill giants completes the display. One is barely alive; she is hog-tied, and lurches and convulses as she tries to tries to free her broken limbs from the sturdy ropes. Her companion is similarly bound, but is dead, with vultures picking the meat from his bones. The wreckage of several wagon beds lies near the northern caverns.
Oily black smoke pours from the large central opening on the north side of the landing, carrying the putrid smell of burnt hair and decomposing flesh. A loud whimpering sound and a man’s terrified scream fills the air from the cave.

Room D is towards the North and has the smoke and screams coming from it. Each square is 10ft x 10ft so use the corners.
You all have 1 round worth of actions.

The hastened Boswick checks to make sure his earplugs are securely in his ears, then immediately moves toward the sounds of chaos, drawling forth his +1 Shock Adamantine longsword. As he goes, he motions his comrades to follow.

Move toward Room D

Boswick eyes squint as shadow and light mix and he attempts to see the cause of so much suffering.

The Veteran's Vault: MAP

What grand purpose this huge chamber once served is lost to time. Now it is the common room and kitchen for the hill giants of the Storval Stairs. The ceiling of this central chamber rises fully fifty feet to a cathedral ceiling, and balconies on either side open out from second story rooms. The once grand carvings decorating the walls are blackened with thick layers of soot, and the worked stone tiles of the floor are chipped and covered in piles of trash. A large stewpot hangs over a cooking fire in the southern end of the chamber, simmering with an unknown liquid filled with bits of meat of dubious provenance floating on the surface.
There Giants lean over the boiling pot grunting and laughing. On the floor near the fire is a bound man pleading for his life.

Lavode, Kynrac, and George still have a full round of actions. We'll call this a "surprise round". Once those guys post we'll move into initiative.
@ BOS, I moved you on the map but feel free to move yourself on your turn.
