"I have a mission for you," says Istivil Bosk, the Venture-Captain of Daggermark in the River Kingdoms. After receiving the assignment from Venture-Captain Adril Hestram in Absalom, traveling for weeks across the Inner Sea and up the lengthy Sellen River, and with barely an hour to adjust to Daggermark’s sights and sounds, the Venture-Captain of Daggermark now paces back and forth across cramped quarters crammed full of maps, books, and adventuring gear.
"Your timing is perfect, friends," explains Bosk, an elderly man with graying hair and a pinched, weathered face. He waves a parchment in his hand. "I received another letter just yesterday." He holds up another stack of letters. “It’s from the Black Marquis—I believe his real name is Bazzak—the leader of a band of brigands surreptiously known as the Pirate Pact. In all of these letters, he claims to need our help and offers us The Memoirs of the Silver Brotherhood, a rare text—maybe the rarest—in exchange. The Society tried for years to track it down and now Bazzaks claims to be ready to give it to us. I’m sending you north to Deadbridge near the Echo Wood to meet this Black Marquis and offer him your help with whatever it is he needs. I want this book, and you’ll get it for me."
The grizzled old man offers no laughs, just pointedness, but at least he's got determination beyond what you might expect from a certain other wizened, old Venture-Captain. "The directions to Deadbridge are in here," he says, holding out a folded up map for you to take. "Are your instructions clear, Pathfinders?"
Feel free to muster now, we'll 'officially' start once everyone is ready to go!
Dawn Verda |
"Makes sense to me. What's the catch? You never trade things away for free." Dawn observes a flower she picked. "I don't want to break the law here- unless I have to."
This elf adds the flower to her hair and grins. Her falchion clashes against her chain shirt. "Foremother always warned me about this stuff."
"...wait. Are we dealing with pirates? I guess we need to make sure they keep their end of the bargain."
Irvine M. Wolf |
Irvine walked about the room as Bosk was speaking, taking in the sight of the maps, books, and equipment and looking for anything that might be of interest to him for his own travels. This particular captain seemed to have a great wealth of knowledge in his possession that could have very well contained the key bit of information to lead him to the next pathway of his own selfish mission. Now of course, wasn't the time and from personal experience, most people in authority didn't appreciate it when you suddenly divert the subject away from what they needed. He would have to wait until another time.
Glancing about in one of the far corners of the room, he turned his attention to the captain, confirming that he was actually in fact paying attention. "Are our instructions clear...?" He repeated in his head to himself with a slight smirk. "Yeah... Meet with Bazzak, this Brigand leader, chuck all morality out of the window and do what he says to humor him to get what you want because it's very important. Am I understanding this right...?" He looked over at the other party members. "I'm not above burning a few crops and robbing a few innocents but I'll be damned if we aren't able to right what we've done and make their lives better for it." he took out his pipe and clacked it against his gauntlet to empty the previously burnt tobacco. "Do we know what this Pirate Pact has been known for in the past?"
Lady Mae |
A small, frog-like creature hops into the room, wiping her sticky hands off on her leather armor. She stretches and leans to try to get a view of the goings on before finally sticking her hands and feet to the wall and climbing up to look over everyone else's heads. "You're sending us to work with pirates? Work FOR pirates? This is unusual." She blinks slowly, licking each eyeball one at a time with her long tongue.
"This man, Irvine, asks good questions. I worry this is unreal. Hard to trust men like that."
Mae is mostly done, need to get the equipment in order and her companion as well.
Dawn Verda |
"Oh wow, a Grippli. You're maybe the second one I've ever met." Dawn looks at the creature on the wall. "And you can just climb up walls? That's pretty useful. Foremother can do that but it's gotta be a tree."
She turns to the human. "Oh, and hi there! I'm definitely not going to rob any innocent people. Unless we're robbing them of bad vibes!" She giggles.

"Hello. I'm Mae. Our people are unusual outside of the deep jungles. I left to try something new, but I miss it sometimes. Sunny helps keep me happy." She cocks her head sideways, trying to understand the Elf's final statement.

"Whoah, what's with all the negativity, man?" Juicy asks as their fellow agents complain about pirates, stepping forward with their hands out in a placating gesture. "Pirates are, like, people too. Most love to sing, some like to dance, and they all tell great stories." They brush a few leaves out of their eyes, rustling loudly and knocking loose a few grapes that bounce off the floor. "Why, I've even heard that when you're a professional pirate, you're, like, always in the best of company, man." They look around at their fellow Pathfinders, and smile. "Hey, we should, like, just meet them before we judge, you know?"
The short vine leshy smiles at Dawn's enthusiasm at meeting a Mae. "That's, like, more like it, man! We should totally, like, remove all the bad vibes in the world..." They seem to space out for a second, the suddenly blinks and refocuses. "Oh, by the way, I'm Juicy. Juicy Green Grapes, and this is Sundew" They gesture towards a long vine that has started to slither across the floor to curl around the feet of all three of the other agents. "Whoah, look, they like you, man! They, like, never usually greet strangers like that."
Dawn Verda |

"Wow, a vine leshy! I'm so honored." Dawn drops to her knees to meet the thing at eye level. "Juicy Green Grapes, is it? I'm Dawn. I haven't seen many leshies since I left the Commune." She looks at the vine. "Wow, an animated vine. It sounds like they follow you around, Juicy Green Grapes. Can I call you JGG for short?"
Juicy Green Grapes |
"Hey, you can call me J for shorter." Juicy says with a smile, extending a wooden hand in greeting. "And yeah, Sundew, like, follows me everywhere. Sort of like my assistant, but I don't like labels, you know?" The long vine gives Dawn a good 'sniff' before moving onto the next agent. "So you've, like, seen other leshys before then? What sort of Commune are you from, man?"
Mr Slithers |
Sundew goes up to Irvine and Mae next, their two 'heads' feeling the other agents out at the same time.
I think I have everything sorted for both profiles now. The archetype and race are too new for my usual tools and had to do everything manually. Hopefully I didn't make any mistakes.
Dawn Verda |
"The Commune has a close connection to the... First World, I think that's what you call it. Foremother comes from there, but she doesn't like talking about it. My birth parents are from there, I think. Everyone kind of takes care of each other out there. Gnomes, fae, elves and of course Humans. Humans kind of show up no matter the environment."
GM Red |
Bosk regards the garden of Pathfinders carefully, looking at each of you one at a time. "Just as you're surprised to be working with pirates, I'm surprised to see something of a vegetable patch and a grippli in my office. It amazes me that Pathfinders come from all walks of life, and all ages," he says, pacing the room once more. "What a marvel."
He rubs his chin. "What has the Pirate Pact been known for in the past? Oh, you know, looting, pillaging, high seas combat. Consistent intake of rum." He stops again. "I don't have specific details, but we need that text, so frankly, I'm willing to take the risk."
His patience wearing thin, Bosk nudges his head in the direction of the doors. "Now then, the Black Marquis awaits. Safe travels!"

And so the mission travels north along the Sellen River, to the aptly named village of Deadbridge, a rundown hamlet partially built on wharves. It is there, in a rundown antique manor house where stands Urdul Bazzak, the Black Marquis.
"I rule the Pirate Pact and with it the stretch of the Sellen River between here and Numeria," proudly states the portly little man. "The waterways are the lifeblood of the River Kingdoms, so you must understand that any menace to the river is a menace to the balance of power." The Black Marquis stops and quickly looks to his left and right before leaning in and continuing in hushed tones. "Unless someone deals with this threat soon, I could lose everything. Normally I would rely on my most trusted lieutenants, but …" Bazzak sits up, regains some composure, and resumes. "The book I’m willing to trade for your service—The Memoirs of the Silver Brotherhood—contains information about an Azlanti treasure vault deep within the Echo Wood. That’s where I sent my most trusted lieutenants. Only, on their way they were waylaid by spiders and abominations and only one returned alive. Lady Riverbane sent out another ship upon her return, the Hanspur’s Luck, to search for my men. The Luck hasn’t returned either.”
Bazzak points to the only other person in the room, a raven-haired beauty standing in a corner. "Lady Riverbane is my most trusted second, and she will take one of my best ships and guide you back to the Azlanti vault. Rid the river of these monstrous spiders and their abominations, find the Hanspur’s Luck, and uncover the whereabouts of my men, and the book is yours. Do it quickly, do it quietly, and do it before the rest of the Pact realize I’ve sent my best men on fools’ errands that may have killed them all."

Pausing, she continues. "So, what kinds of threats did your allies face again? Hopefully they are weak to lightning."
Lady Mae |

Mae climbs up the wall a bit higher as the crawling vine comes for her "Please call off your pet my Leshy friend. I haven't met many vines that weren't always hungry...in some Grippi villages they are quite the scourge, able to snake their way up into our tree top villages."
She climbs away a bit more before continuing the discussion with Dawn and the Captain "I'm lucky to be with so many open minded and nature conscious agents. I look forward to you meeting Sunny on our boat trip."
The River Trip
It takes some level of convincing, but Mae finally gets Sunny on board the river boat "Sunny, this is a river, not the burning ocean. Try the water yourself." She sucks up a mouthful of water and gently spits some on Sunny's flank. Sunny's eyes quickly shut, and a nervous quiver ripples across her side, but she calms down and makes her way on board. Mae takes a mushroom out of her pack and helps convince her the trip will be worthwhile. "Watch your step, Sunny can leave a mess after she's gone through. And please, for your safety, don't try feeding her."
Dawn can tell Mae is a bit quiet and doesn't get too many of her jokes, unless of course they deal with nature in some way. She doesn't have the breadth of experiences to make the connections otherwise.
Pie-Rat 'Strong'Hold
Mae heads inside, leaving Sunny tied on board the river barge, out of reach of anything too delicate. "Spiders and abominations? What is an abomination? Spiders are just one of Golarion's hungry creatures. But I must admit, they can be quite angry and aggressive when defending their territory. I will see if I can not convince them to move on. Maybe there are some orc or goblin camps near by they can resettle to feed on?"
Mae smiles and lets out a low, drawn out croak as she hears Dawn's joke on Rivers and Oceans. "You are a very funny Elf woman. I enjoy your short tales greatly. So does Sunny, once I explain them to her at least."
Irvine M. Wolf |

Irvine was hardly swayed by the captain's explanation or lack thereof of the importance of the text they were to retrieve. He raised hand to the side of his mouth to hide it then leaned over to Lady Mae. "He's willing to take the risk? Sounds like he's more willing to risk us, otherwise he would be coming along..." he said with a smirk and a hushed tone that only she could hear.
=====
Once they arrived at the Bazzak's Manor house, Irvine listened to the portly little man's spiel. He couldn't help but question his motives. He didn't trust pirates, brigands, or anyone that profited from other's misfortune. Long ago he had been a victim of such people and also had been the cause of much misfortune himself so his knowledge of how individuals such as the Marquis operated was quite expansive... even if how they operated was fairly straight forward.
Irvine nodded as he listened, his eyes starting to glaze over at the mention of spiders. He hated spiders... "Spiders and-...abominations...?" He blinked several times. "You sure are tending to leave out some fairly important details here...Exactly what type of abominations?" He was getting a fairly bad feeling about this already. There were too many unanswered questions for him to feel confident about what was really going on.
Looking about at his party members, he took a few steps over to Lady Mae, being obviously cautious as he stepped around Sundew as if unsure of the vine's own being since he had never seen one before.
He stepped close enough to Lady Mae to have another private conversation. "None of this is sitting right with me..." he said in a hushed and slightly off-put tone. "Abominations? A Fool's errand? not only that but it needs to be done both quickly and more importantly quietly? What exactly are we getting ourselves into. If those are 'details', then I'm not sure even he knows why he wants to be there. His men? Surely they're not that important to him..." His eyes fell low with soft groan. "I need a stiff drink..."
Maybe he was overthinking things. But Irvine didn't much care for unknown "abominations". He liked, knowing and having as much information as possible. He didn't want to get himself into another situation that he couldn't get himself out of. Not before his own personal goals were accomplished.
Juicy Green Grapes |
In the briefing...
"Whoah, Mae? No worries, but they're just being friendly, man." Juicy says stepping towards Sundew, pulling out a dead rat from their pack. "Here Sundew, it's, like, dinner time..." The vine stops slithering after Mae and starts following Juicy to the other side of the room, where they start curling tightly around the rat until all you can see is the tip of a tail poking out.
The river trip...
Juicy is rather anxious to find that Sunny is actually a giant slug, and makes sure that Sundew on the other side of the deck at all times, not to mention a few fears for their own safety. It's, like, a good thing I don't sleep man. They think to themself. I might wake up bald. They seem to enjoy the company though, smiling at Dawns jokes and probing everyone for stories from their homelands.
Now...
"Yeah, that's, like, really vague man." Juicy says, echoing the concerns of their fellow agents, before following up with some questions of his own. "So, like, if we find this treasure... Does that belong to the Society too? That is, like, assuming you're men haven't already laid claim and stuff. Oh, and how many people have you lost, man?"
GM Red |
The plump Black Marquis folds his arms together. "Monstrous spiders and their abominations. Their abominable offspring. Tiny spiders. Hundreds of them," he says.
Lady Riverbane emerges from the corner with a muffled laugh. "That was pretty good, friend," she flashes a smile at Dawn. "I'm Lady Riverbane, the friendliest captain this side of Deadbridge. Don't ask me how it got its name. I don't think you want to know." She winks at you. Her long black hair falls over what seems like a purposely low cut tunic. She's quite dashing.
"At least six were lost in the last trip to the Echo Wood," Bazzak adds. "And that's why I've hired the Pathfinder Society for assistance."
When asked of the treasure and its rightful owner, Bazzak glowers. "We located the treasure, and it belongs to us! ... However, I am a reasonable man, despite what you might think of pirates." He grins, pacing the room. "Half. I'll let you keep half of the spoils. Do we have a deal?"
___
"Bazzak, we'll be leaving now, don't wait up," Lady Riverbane smiles, turning to lead you out into town.
"You two might draw a little attention. Or perhaps you'll blend right in with the trees," she quips at Lady Mae, Juicy Green Grapes, and her pet as you head down a road towards the docks.
"Those swords of your will come in handy. Keep them at the ready, will you?" She says to Irvine and Dawn.
"Like Bazzak said, there are likely going to be spiders. Lots of spiders. Swarms of them! If you need any provisions knowing this, now's the time. The Scrag Fisher is my ship," she says with pride, "And the ship we'll be taking."
Any purchases to make before we head out?
Dawn Verda |
"Swarms? I have some vials of acid and a little bit of alchemist's fire. I think I'll be alright." Dawn checks her gear.
"Sunny and Sundew. You two make quite the pair." Dawn grins and follows Lady Riverbane.
Juicy Green Grapes |
"Swarms, man..." Juicy says, shaking their head as they root in their pack for a coin purse. "They, like, get in all my cracks. I'll have to get some supplies for that." They open the purse and a moth flies out. Sighing they search the merchants for something a little cheaper than alchemist's fire as they follow behind Lady Riverbane with the others. "You'll be surprised, man. People tend to ignore the shrubbery." They say to friendliest captain this side of Deadbridge.
Bought some vermin repellent and a flask of acid.

Lady Mae walks along, tugging a leash with Sunny attached at the other end. The progress can be slow at times as she gets distracted by any sort of greenery along the way. "JGG, would you mind walking about 10 paces in front of Sunny? She seems to like you, it'll keep her moving along quickly." Mae continues to hop along "Oh, and don't stop or let her catch up, I'm not quite sure what she'll do just yet..."
As the talk focuses more and more on dealing with swarms of small spiders, Mae lets out a slow, low croak "Please let me speak with the spiders if possible before you try to destroy them. If they can't be reasoned with then we must protect ourselves." She'll join with the group in purchasing some alchemist fires and acids as well. 2 each
Irvine M. Wolf |
Irvine nodded, staying closer to Lady Mae than anyone else since she seemed to hold the same ideals but was skeptical at her request. "If you can talk these spiders out of trying to kill and crawl around me, that would be something I would pay for. I might just buy you a drink." Just thinking about the prospect of spiders was giving him a sick stomach. "In fact, I could use a drink right now...anyone else want a drin-...?"
He turned in Juicy's direction with a sick look on his face at the thought of spiders but paused in sudden thought, staring at him blankly. "I-...I don't know what Leshy's drink...Water? Sunlight?"
Lady Mae |
Mae smiles, or you think its a smile. Frogs have unusual faces when compared to regular humanoids. She reaches into her pack and pulls out a jug and hands it to Irvine "Here, try this. Very common and good drink from the jungle." She hands him a small jug, about 1/2 full of bufo.
GM Red |
"Speak with spiders?" Lady Riverbane looks at Lady Mae inquisitively. "It takes all kinds, doesn't it?"
After finalizing your purchases, you board the Scrag Fisher, a 50-foot long, single masted vessel rigged with a lugsail.
Lady Riverbane calmly marches towards the helm, where six sailors await. "Andrezi, these Pathfinders will be accompanying us as per Bazzak's orders. Bring Esmerelda with you and wind in the anchor. Tormer, Viorel, gather rations and rum and haul them up here, we've got a few days ahead of us. Fox, Thorpe, you two open the sails. We embark immediately!"
"Aye, captain!" The six pirates reply, scattering across the ship.
___
Since it left Deadbridge, the Scrag Fisher has been cutting a straight furrow into the lazy waters of the Sellen River, making good speed thanks to its industrious crew actively manning the ship’s sail and ropes. Deadbridge is already far behind when an exclamation rises.
“Sail Ho!” One of the robust sailors points ahead while turning toward Lady Riverbane standing at the helm.
"It's a cog, Milady. And it flies no colors—should we tender these trespassers?"
Looking at the incoming vessel, Lady Riverbane answers in a stern voice. "Nay! Not today, man. We have our mission. We’ll stick to it."
Without another word, the crew gets back to working the hawser and lanyards. As the two ships draw closer, the other craft's pitiful state becomes obvious. With planks and riggings missing in places, sailors frantically move about the deck and appear to have difficulty steering their ship.
As the two ships avoid collision and pass alongside each other, a shout rises— "Now!" —followed by a volley of grappling hocks from the other vessel. The Scrag Fisher is under attack!

- You can attempt to jump across to the other ship with a DC 10 Acrobatics check - this is lowered to 5 if you get a 20 feet running start.
- If you fall off the side of the ship, you can roll DC 15 Reflex to grab a lanyard before hitting the waterline. If you end up in the waters, it's a DC 10 Swim check to stay above the waves, and a DC 15 Climb check to get back on board.

"The plank, you idiot! Get the plank!" The red-eyepatched one replies.
Green acts first, and extends a flat plank across the two ships, while red charges forth over the new footbridge. He makes it to other side but doesn't see J's glaive coming, and takes a lethal stab to the side. The thug at the helm watches his companion fall overboard, and tries his shortbow instead. "Yar, cut the ropes or not, we'll just keep peltin' ya damn bastard with arrows!" The pirates taunt. One decides to try his luck and jumps across anyway. As he lands, he's quickly cut down to his knees by JGG's glaive, screaming in pain as Sundew then wraps around him and squeezes the life out of his body.

- Botting Irvine -
Irvine swings his greatsword across the final rope connecting the two ships, and the river current immediately takes hold of the enemy ship.
______________
"They've cut 'em all! Keep rainin' arrows upon 'em, ya mangy mongrels! We kin still kill 'em!"
Lady Riverbane continues watching from the helm, calling over only to cheer on your apparent success.
Regardless, the determined enemy pirates aim their bows high and release two more arrows.

With all six fastening ropes now cut, the ships drift apart five feet.
The ships are now 10 feet apart and will continue to drift apart 5 feet per round with the ropes cut.

A look of what can be best decribed as 'passive slug anger' washes over Sunny as an arrow zings towards her Froggy friend. BLOOOP BLOOOOOOP! Goes through her mind and her eye stalks wave around furiously. She rears her head back a step and lets a gooey loogy fly at the blue pirate. A few tendrils drip down her cheek and onto the deck.

Mae frowns "Now you've done it. I won't be able to get her calmed down for days." Mae draws out a sling and loads it.
Dawn Verda |
"Man, you guys have terrible aim-" An arrow almost goes through her face. "Well, if that's how you want to play it."
She draws her longbow and fires back at whomever shot her.
Longbow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 2
Juicy Green Grapes |
"Whoah, man!?" Juicy exclaims as they drop their glaive onto the deck next to Sundew, who is currently wrapping more and vines around the poor pirate, slowly digesting him. "Why all the anger?" They draw their longbow and attempt to fire off a shot back towards the pirate with the yellow tunic.
Sundew skip it's turn and will just continue eating the Pirate since it can't do anything else. :)

Sunny's toxic loogy lands on the blue-booted pirate's head, burning through his hair and frying his scalp. The black eyepatched one take a painful arrow to the knee care of one Dawn Verda. JGG misfires, and hits the enemy ship's mast.
"Terrible aim? See how terrible THIS aim is!" Yellow taunts. Continuing the projectile exchange, he nocks another arrow and lets it fly towards Juicy Green Grapes, but it skirts just past the vine leshy.
