Naia enters the water and can hear the chanting finish as Soros casts his spell.
FYI Soros's protective ward is a supernatural ability, which by standard rules doesn't require any verbal, somatic, or material components (I didn't see any house rules to the contrary). Your flavor text had Soros vocalizing it - wasn't sure if this was confusion I've created by having my spellcasting be in bold italics and thoughts in regular italics, or whether you require it to have components. No big deal in our current situation, but I wanted to clarify whether you have house rules on this, as it could be relevant in the future.

ALLENDM |

Ok
I see what you are saying.
And I agree with Naias view of it because that is how I saw it.
so moving onward.
Just so we are all clear and there is no confusion. I have always played oppositional rolls as roll for roll and not one roll against many. This actually benefits the party in most cases and lends to more realism. For instance you make a really bad roll against group 1 there is a higher chance of them spotting you but against group 2 you make a really good roll and there is much lower chance of them spotting you. Granted in this case the high roll was the first one but the field still has some unknowns on it. THere are going to be a lot of combat situations like this with multiple enemies moving around you.... One low roll on a stealth check or bluff check can be a disaster but with multiple rolls you mitigate that risk. This also greatly benefits those that use sneak attacks. A good example is the goblins that didn't see you but saw Rabalar could have been ambushed by D'ogryn because their attention was on Rabalar (Sneak attack applies).
I am totally fine doing one roll if that is what the party wants but it benefits you in the long run to use the multiple rolls of opposition checks. In this case I just kept it to the groups of goblins since they were each right next to each other.
My background was ops in the Marine Corps (12 years and 4 years in agency in the field). I try to make combat as chaotic as possible especially in environments like this so it feels more "real". The guys I play with IRL are all guys I served with (well all except two of our group)and we play by these rules so I didn't even consider the one roll aspect. Sorry for the confusion...

_Soros_ |

I'm okay either way on the one roll vs multiple rolls, though I imagine doing one action roll (ie one Stealth check opposed by many Perception checks) will save a lot of time/effort in the long run. I think one roll probably gives most players a greater sense of agency as well, rather than having the DM rolling additional checks for them. (Which isn't at all to say that the DM shouldn't roll checks for people if it speeds up play!)
On an unrelated note, in review I see that I managed to mis-spell my own character's full name in my most recent gameplay post >:|

Naia Temlow |

Sure, which is way I said "high or low" - you take your chance with the one roll. Being somewhat lacking in common sense, some maths, and a little what we might call contingent causality, it never occurred to me that players, making more actions, might benefit from multiple rolls. Or something. I'm fine with either method, let's just stick to one of them!!!

We can do one roll for the DC check on oppositional rolls than.

...Historically I wonder if harpoons were ever required to go very far, I can imagine that European whalers would have thrown down from a deck higher than the water, and that tribal hunters may have been quite close (given the non-metal nature of their bone/wood tips) and in numbers to bring the creature down/in.
According to my not-in-any-way exhaustive research, boats would close within 20 feet of a whale or less(!) before throwing harpoons. I think that the fact that they're trailing many yards of rope off their tail end probably throws their accuracy way out of whack.
So let's go with 15 feet. It boggles my mind that a throwing axe range is only 10 feet, but then I guess that is the comfortable range, and you can throw beyond the first range increment? Is there a second range increment and so forth? There used to be in ADnD1e...
Ranged attacks take a cumulative –2 penalty for each full range increment (or fraction thereof) of distance to the target. For example, a dagger (with a range of 10 feet) thrown at a target that is 25 feet away would incur a –4 penalty. A thrown weapon has a maximum range of five range increments. A projectile weapon can shoot to 10 range increments.

I have not heard back from Hustonj and it doesn't appear his posting is active. I will let you guys sort out if you would like me to wait a bit longer for him. If you like we can give him until this encounter is complete.
When we get to that point I would like to recruit a new player to fill that hole as you will need a front line PC. However, we can work on that as a group when the time comes.

Naia Temlow |

Ok, thanks for the heads up. I'm happy to wait until the end of the encounter, both in the hope hustonj turns up and in-game verisimilitude.

Hello.
Common message for all the games I was participating in:
I know I vanished without warning. Trust me, it wasn't planned. My wife had a new medical condition flare up, and I've been going to work, doing my job, coming home, doing bothe her chores and mine, taking care of her because she's had extermely limited mobility, taking care of her service animal, covering chunks of time that she had pledged towards watching our grand-daughter, and then still trying to keep up with my existing Scouting obligations.
I was suddenly very busy.
She's been better the last couple of days, so I've built the time to craft this message and distribute it. Today she started having a reaction to the medication that was helping her be better, so that bodes poorly. She also has a procedure tomorrow that is part fo the continuum of care for her problem (as required by insurance companies), but her doctor doesn't think is actually going to address her cause. He said tha's another 3 procedures down the list, but the insurance won't approve him skipping down the list or trying multiple things in quick succession.
I want to apologize to everyone for the impact my real-life has had on your entertainment. You at least deserved to hear from me sooner, honestly.
Now you know why I vanished. And why I don't know if my availability is actually going to get any better in the short term or not.
This is one of the two or three games I've really been enjoying. It seems kinda mean to the other players for me to try to push you to see what happens with my time, though.

I am fine with it and totally understand. We were waiting for you and the party already subscribed to waiting for this encounter to conclude. So on behalf of everyone welcome back! If you need to drop off just let us know when you can and I can bot you between stints.
As luck would have it your turn is up as Edan has just moved (group 2). Will let you get caught back up and you can post. Glad to have you back :)

Naia Temlow |

I hope things improve for your wife and family hustonj.
We are fine, almost all wounded or incapacitated, and should weather this just fine. Or not.
But none of it it because of your actual, real life absence which takes precedence.
Post if you can, we will be here. Take care!

I'll have to read through the thread while I'm waiting on her procedure today, and can post after I've caught up.
2 hours of work this morning before I head back home to get her to take her to the doc.

Greeting to all,
I am giving some advanced noticed that I will be out of town for sometime on vacation. I will not have internet access for most of that time but will try to check in on the game when and if I am able to do so. Please bot me as needed.
The dates I will be out of town are June 13th till July 3rd.

ALLENDM |

Morale has taken a turn for the goblins. I had a rule set up if they lose at least two of their force the regular goblins would break and there was a slight chance the leader would break... The two that dropped in the pool was enough to break the group and the leader failed his morale check.
I decided in this encounter to not use the auto-crit (hit roll only). I am glad I didn't because several of the goblin's hits would have been crits. Our next combat encounter will use one hit crits...I figured this encounter would be a good one to sort out wound thresholds for those that hadn't used it before.
Once we get this encounter finished...depending on if you give chase or not and such I will disperse experience and we can discuss anything about the encounter.
A quick note - I gave the bonus for an elevated position as +2...I didn't have the rule in front of me but normally it is +1 for melee only. That was a mistake on my part but once I looked it up I decided to just roll with it since I had used it twice already. D'ogryn's hit would have gotten a +2 as well. Just thought I would mention that too everyone.

ALLENDM |

Hey Me'mori,
Just an FYI you have the traits:
Comprehensive Education: Humans raised with skilled teachers draw upon vast swathes of knowledge gained over centuries of civilization. They gain all Knowledge skills as class skills, and they gain a +1 racial bonus on skill checks for each Knowledge skill that they gain as a class skill from their class levels.
Piety Humans: place great trust in the gods to protect them. Humans with this trait receive a +2 racial bonus on Knowledge (religion) checks and Knowledge (religion) is always a class skill for them. In addition, once per day before attempting an attack roll, saving throw, ability check, or skill check, such a human can call out to his deity in order to receive a +2 racial bonus on that roll; he can use this ability only if he is able to speak.
If you intend on using it let me know when you make the roll.

Hi everybody. For the next few weeks my work/life balance is going to be very out of whack from the norm, and my posting will most likely be spotty and/or brief. I apologize for the disruption, and please feel free to bot me whenever necessary. My hope is that by the end of June I'll regain some equilibrium and be back to my regularly scheduled posting.

ALLENDM |

Team,
With Goodwicki and Jovich being absent for some time I really need everyone else to push their posting up to keep the story moving along.
Make sure you stay on top of what is going on. There are several critically wounded people in the party. D'ogryn is on the western side of the glen up top and Naia is in the pool area.
Make sure you move your PC on the map to represent where you moved during this time period.
I will bot D'ogryn and Soros in the meantime.

ALLENDM |

Team,
I am thinking about having Licitus do a cameo for us with a PC he has while we have Goodwicki and Jovich being out for a bit. It will help us with pushing the story along. If no one has an issue I think it will help. Waiting for his response back, he sent me note a while back letting me know he would love to do a cameo if we had a need and I see need here at the moment. Let me know if you have any objections...it is our story so I am all ears.
SD

_Soros_ |

I'm down but not out :) I should be able to check in at least twice a week. Still feel free to bot as needed to move things along!

Me'mori |

Apologies, I was counting the (Out of Combat) as not needing the map anymore, but Edan would have crossed the river.
I do not think he can sacrifice a spell slot for a CLW, like clerics do, and it is something that he has not (and potentially will not) routinely prepare, as the convalescing time is good for reflection. At this level, he cannot channel, either.

Naia Temlow |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Naia is a fighter, so beyond fighting, she has ranks in Attitude, Cursing and Post-teen Social Awkwardness as Compensated by More Attitude.

Thout |

Hey everyone! This is Thout. I've read the gameplay and discussion threads, and I am excited for this cameo. There's been some great RP, and the combat style seems really fun. Please feel free to review Thout's background, but the basic idea is he is a fighter interested in alchemy. It just so happens (wink, wink) that he is related to Geolin Ironteeth and has come for some additional training from his uncle. If he were aware of you, I'm sure he'd be anxious to meet you!
Really looking forward to be part of the story... And to exploring the alchemist's house. Out of character, I'm not too familiar with the Greyhawk world, so I'm enjoying the chance to play a character in it.

Thout |

I reread the interaction between Thout, the inside guard, and the outside guard. I believe I misunderstood and thought the door was opening to allow Thout in, but it seems that the inside guard was just having a look. Thout would have said the same things I wrote earlier, he just still has his pack on and is still outside talking with the original guard.

Sorry for not posting last night. I had a late night as my older son was signed to play on a national soccer team so that stole the show. Looks like I will be doing a lot of traveling this year to watch soccer games all over the country. I will have some posts up tonight for us so we can get the story moving along.

People need to stick to playing games they enjoy. I hate to see her go, but I can't really argue with her about the choice.
The part that scares me is she had our only healing . . ..
Topic change:
My Scout Troop goes to Summer Camp the week after the 4th. I'll have my phone and a place I can go for wifi, but I don't know how much time I'll have to read and post. I'll hit the road on 7 Jul and get home on 15 Jul. We're driving from San Antonio to the Arkansas Ozarks (Camp Kia Kima).

Absolutely, I was enjoying Zove and Okware and they will be missed.
Understood about the travel and the vacation. We will be leaving at the end of July for my youngest son's travel baseball team. They will be in Atlanta for the week playing baseball making the drive from Fairview, TX. I will have my laptop and plan to post but it might be slow. The next week we are at the beach house for a week in Florida and I plan to pick up the posting while lounging around trying to do nothing but fish, dive, and spend time with the family eating at as many restaurants as we can :)

Naia Temlow |

I'll miss Zove too - but in character I really understand. I was half of a mind to drop Naia out and roll up a new character given the beating she got from that trap. But those Temlow's are made of stern stuff, if not the wisest.

Naia Temlow |

@DM - congrats to your son. I grew up playing soccer here in Oz, even though it isn't anything like as popular as any of the other three barbaric football codes... I still play indoor (on a team with my brother and 17 y.o. niece!), seven-a-side in summer and am the President of my local football club. Still trying to get the band back together for full sided games, but the competition is in recession...managed to get the women's competition restarted after a few years hiatus...

Rabalar |

Been waiting for Edan, Soros, or D'Ogryn to post something. Forgot two of them are out of pocket.
Was going to wait until late on Monday before posting again. Still will, but now I feel more like I'm holding things up than waiting on the others for signs of life.

Me'mori |

If I am reading correctly, that encounter between Rabalar and Thout is taking place outside of the residence a... day(?) after their return, so Edan is tending to those that remain. A full day of care is wearying, so he's not going to be too enthusiastic/energetic until a day after that.

ALLENDM |

Me'mori,
I only counted the time elapsed from the night you got in into the morning so it was only eight hours or so. Now if you want to do another full days rest I will count that on the next for you. So you only did eight hours of care and Zove assisted.
It is currently the next morning from when the party got in from the Glen.
