We actually switched from 3.5 to 4e and then when we agreed that everyone hated 4e we made the jump to Pathfinder. I suspect if we end up not liking 2e we'd switch back to 1e; my brother (who is our GM) has managed to accumulate physical copies of every Paizo AP published to date sans the magazine-era stuff like Shackled City so we've got plenty of 1e material to last us if we were to switch back.

I kinda count myself lucky that I play online as much as I do because by doing that I'll likely be able to scratch several itches at once. For example, I still plan to GM and play plenty of 1e PFS stuff on here even after 2e launches.

I’ve started thinking more about trying to get back into AD&D 1e myself. I think that was my favorite era, to be honest. I’ve started buying some old modules and books here and there.

That was exactly the same thing for my group Aleris: 3.5 to 4e, and the tactical nature of the new edition almost drew us in, but there was just too much similarities between classes so we dropped it.

Then there was a HUGE hiatus, and we stumbled upon Pathnfinder.

As far as hardcopy goes, I have a couple of Rulebooks, and had actually made the decision a few months ago to fill up my collection starting with the classics... I grabbed Rise of the Runelords Anniversary edition, then Curse of the Crimson Throne, and Second Darkness (paperbacks were being sold a $5 dollars each on the Paizo site. Didn't even blink) before they go out of print.

Was planning on continuing but now I don't know if I should.

-------------------

Qari I don't know.... I was a BIG fan of AD&D Second Edition. And maybe even more of 3.5 (played Planescape for AGES). But I don't think I could return to first edition - as in 'Elf is a class'? :D

Polux, you are actually right. The AD&D stuff I was thinking of was 2E, not 1E. 2E is where my attention has been heading lately.

As for this edition debate I may dip my toe into the Pathfinder 2E pool but I am not keen on spending a bunch of money on a whole new set of rules. I keep saying I want to start a S&W campaign and since I have a bunch of their rulebooks I could certainly do that! Swords and Wizardry is a 0E/1E clone put out by Frog God Games which is a very good rule set.

Perhaps after I slaughter my players in Rappan Athuk... ;)

Ah, Des. That sucks. Let me hug you, sweetie.

This happens to all groups after a while though. Eventually, you'll likely start up again with one or two new people and a few of the older ones. That's what's happened to me at least.

As for getting to playtest online, yep, we're going to do that. That's why we started a new lodge, Cottonseed. We want to be part of this whole playtest process from the beginning. I suspect that 1e will continue to thrive online long after it disappears from stores.

Hmm

That really sucks Des, I'm sorry :(

I'll echo Hmm's hopes that maybe you can eventually restart with at least some of your old hands and hopefully some new ones, too.

Okay, I should be able to get us moving today again.

On top of the second edition news, I also had some RL stuff going on that made the delay last longer. Last week I started some electrotherapy for depression where they zap my brain three times a week and that's been leaving me a bit discombobulated and less able to concentrate. But I should be able to bump this game forward little by little, I think.

They zap your brain? That sounds both scary and kind of cool in a mad science way. I’m sorry that you’ve been having trouble concentrating though. I also have been fighting off some mild depression this month, and find that exercise — walks, weights and other stuff — can help my moodiness.

It’s good to have you back, Samy.

Fully agree with Hmm and Aleris, and I am going to insist that exercise contributes to well being in ways we don't even imagine, with all the metabolic processes it fires up in our body.

Curiously enough, sunny is where I've lived most of my life - Portugal. Surely enough, it has miles and miles of beautiful beaches, great and inexpensive food and wine, but that's it. It is a good place to spend your vacations, mainly if you are not Portuguese, because we have perhaps the worst wages in Europe (while working perhaps the longest hours - insane and absurd).

So yeah... Good place for vacations, bad place to raise your family, spend time with them, or thinking about fulfilling professional or personal aspirations. As you can probably notice, I am very disappointed with it all, and not because any one thing in particular, but because of the whole. Want more for me and my kids.

I am moving to Denmark - it is not sunny but I've lived there for about 2 years with my family and it was wonderful. We spent more time together than ever, we were better off financially than ever, we traveled more, we LIVED more, and as funny as it may seem, we felt at home there. Back then we left because a health scare in the family sent us reeling, and we just ran away. But we shouldn't have - I have regretted it ever since. The chance came up again, so we are going for Round 2.

And guess what, we'll still spend a good part of our vacations back in Portugal. Yep, it's a GREAT place for vacations :D

(Apologies for the long rant :P)

Wouldn't it be more difficult to cycle often in Denmark than in Portugal? I love cycling but at least here in Finland it's a massive pain in the butt half the year when the snow on the ground alternately melts-freezes-melts-freezes into a hellscape for cyclists...

The brain zap has been an interesting experience if not much more than that yet. Haven't noticed any significant improvements in mood. But I've never had anesthesia before and now I've already had it four times in the past little-over-a-week, so it's been super fascinating from a "new experiences" angle.

Des, on that you got me beat - apart from a few moments of respite, in Portugal the weather is always hot..

Samy, it actually doesn't snow THAT much usually in Denmark - say maybe 3 months a year on and off... Rest of the year you are pretty much free to cycle at will :D

In Portugal the weather is way more forgiving, BUT cities are completely unprepared for it, with only a really small portion of the capital city having cycle ways. Also most cities have a lot of ups and downs, which makes everything way more difficult.

In Denmark I will live about 20 minutes from the city center (by train), and the area is perfect for cycling, with not only cycle ways in the road, but also rough forest trails.

In Portugal, if you want to live close by the main city, you will be drowned in overpopulated urban areas where the quality of life sucks - that and the lack of appropriate infrastructures mean you can forget about cycling, and also your commute will eat up a good portion of your life so... Unless you can find a decent job also outside of the city, which will not happen :P

Have you tried intense exercise, the kind that wears you out completely? Has always been a good thing for me if my head is too filled with stuff threatening to bring me down.

I don't remember if we've discussed this possibility in the past or not, but.

Do we have any possibility to run spurts of the game (not moving the game entirely, just occasional small segments) over any sort of chat system? Facebook Messenger, Google Chat, Whatsapp, Skype, Fantasy Grounds, Roll20. Do any of those platforms have the possibility of featuring all of you players?

I don't recall any such discussions, but it may have happened before I joined the game.

I would expect timezones to make it difficult for us to all be on any of those platforms at the same time. I have accounts for Google and Roll20.

I feel like there's gotta be a way in a world of 6 billion people for someone to figure out a solution that's a little more immediate than forum posting, without needing to go all the way to "everybody online at the same time live chatting". Somebody needs to solve this and get rich off it.

I'm on US Central (GMT -6 I believe) and do hang about on Google Hangouts; I've also got Facebook and some of my other games on the forums use Roll20 for mapping and the like. However, my schedule is all over the place and is rarely consistent from week to week. I'm also not in a position to be able to chat/post at the drop of a hat while at work due to to the nature of my job :\

Out of curiosity, why do you ask Samy? Is forum-posting for games starting to feel a bit too sluggish/cumbersome?

Yeah it's definitely getting tougher for me to remain mentally connected to the games, I easily forget for a week that a game exists.

Without a web interface, you have the problem that it isn't available everywhere and may require separate support for each new device or operating system.

With a web interface, you are limited by what can be done within that interface.

There is also the problem that some people (such as myself) don't like having too many different communications channels. Each channel is another place to look, which takes time and is generally a distraction. I don't know of any good aggregating tools that would allow you to automatically collect, sort, and prioritize the messages. If there is one, it will still have the problem of different interfaces.

If it would help, I believe it is possible to set up an RSS feed for Paizo boards. Sorry to say that I tried RSS a while ago and didn't like it, so I don't have the information handy. I expect that a search of the boards would turn something up though.

The person who will get rich is the one that can create a real digital assistant that can do the aggregation, sorting, prioritization, and proper notification of the various communication channels.

Well it was really fun to be a face-to-face player for a change. I don't think I've been anything other than DM in f2f games for more than 20 years, so that was worth it alone. All the new rules are a little annoying because I don't really have the energy to learn a new system, so all the "what is always available and what isn't" and all those tiny special rules were a little mentally exhausting. I really dislike the racial limitations because they cut out pretty much 90% of the races I want to play. All the tiny end-of-scenario boons are exhausting to keep track of, they're so tiny I just throw them out of my mind and forget about them. Keeping track of the end-of-scenario printout in general is a little annoying too, I would prefer just having everything in my character sheet and be done with it rather than having to keep a folder of everything which is exhausting. So there was a lot of annoying small things, but overall it was a positive experience because getting to be a player outweighed it all.

Female Human NG Witch 4 | Wand CLW 2/50 | HP 23/23 | AC 14 Tch 10 Fl 14 | CMB +2 CMD +12 | F +3 R +1 W +4 +1 vs fire +4 heat | Init +0 | Perc +1, +2 when Thera near | Speed 30 | Spells: 1st 5/5 2nd 3/3 | Active Conditions: Mage Armor

Which scenario did you play?

I agree that there is more bookkeeping than I would like. I don't consider it exhausting, but I know a few people that decided it just wasn't worth it.

I generally do forget about the boons on a character unless they are something that immediately changes something for the character. The boons that do get remembered are those that allow access to a different type of item such as an intelligent item, familiars, or something that gives an in-game title. You can do just fine ignoring the various boons if that is what you want to do.

The folder per character is how I do it, although I am still looking at how to take it all electronic.

Something you didn't mention that has been a big advantage for me is the scheduling flexibility. When I have something open up in my schedule, I can check if there is a game available. If my schedule changes a couple of days before the game, I can just back out and it doesn't generally cause the game to collapse.

I also have enjoyed it because of the people I've met.

I hope you find a way to deal with the paperwork that allows you to enjoy the game!

Liberty's Edge

Female Human Commoner 1

I played

#6-98 Serpents Rise
Gallows of Madness (A Foul Breed)
#8-99B: The Solstice Scar Version B
#3-02: Sewer Dragons of Absalom
and as a further addition just now today
#8-10—Tyranny of Winds, Part 2: Secrets of the Endless Sky

I have them listed under the character that got the credit.

You make a good point about the scheduling flexibility. Now that we're adults with real lives and not teenagers anymore, it is a real godsend to be able to just drop in and play, or drop out and not cause things to collapse.

I didn't really get to know the people so much yet, but I can see how that could also be a benefit in the longer run.

Oh one thing that was cool was my wife also came along for a few games, and she won a $10 voucher out of one of them, and since she doesn't collect RPG products at all she passed it on to me, and now I have Occult Adventures PDF so I can make a psychic in PFS.

(Although with the race limitations of PFS, it's a pain building an Int/Wis or Int/Cha character...I guess I have to go with a dual talent human...)

Samy, I'm glad to hear that you (for the most part) enjoyed your PFS games! If you've got a local location that runs games then it'd probably be easier for you to play that way but of course there's also the Flaxseed Lodge here on the forums for people who want to play PFS/SFS online :)

Out of curiosity, which races do you prefer (that currently aren't open without a boon) to play?

Liberty's Edge

Female Human Commoner 1

I'm a huge fan of:
aasimar
tiefling
changeling
samsaran
lashunta
android

(First I thought about separating into two lists, those who have existing boons and those who don't even have possible boons, but then I realized I don't really know which are which.)

And still a fan, but less so, of:
shabti
ganzi
dhampir
catfolk

I will literally not play any of the core races except human. So thank god the geniekin and eastern races are opened up, because I do like the sylph at least, and starting this weekend I've started warming up to the kitsune a little. (Especially thanks to Keen Kitsune, although I do still need to buy Blood of Beasts for that.) So that gives me three race options: human, sylph and kitsune. I'm sure I can work with that for a while, since I can always use the human for any ability score combination I need.

I loved both Sewer Dragons of Absalom and Gallows of Madness!

The others are also good, but those two stand out for me.

Tyranny of the Winds works best if you can play the whole series in order to get the full story.

The scheduling was what convinced me I wanted to do PFS. It really is great that you can drop out for months, and they will still welcome you back when you have time again. The other thing that gets some people is that you can find a game when out of town. People who travel a lot can sometimes connect with the local gaming groups at their destination and just drop in.

There is one tool I’ve used a lot to help with the record keeping. It is the PFS Session Tracker. It helps you track what scenarios you have already played. When you first start, it really doesn’t seem like a big thing but it doesn’t take that long to get to the point where the tool helps. If you stick with it, try that tool to help you track what you’ve played.

Here, we also use it as organizers to try and see what scenarios to run..

I will definitely look into that session tracker, thank you for the tip!!

Sewer Dragons was a lot of fun plotwise!
