Game Master Meowselsworth

A mafia style game of paranoia and intrigue.

Your town is under attack. What's worse, it's an attack from within. Some of your friends from the same tiny town might just be mafia. Mafia with a grudge against the town of Scrafton. You see, a generation back, one of the most highly skilled detectives lived in this town, and he had managed to get all of these criminals up in a noose. Now, you have to find a way to purge these criminals from the town as they seek revenge.

There are rumours that before his death, Detective Rastley managed to pass all of his learnings down to a new generation of crime fighters. Hopefully they will be able to nip this problem in the bud... If not, it's rumoured that the town will be wiped out in this mafia rampage. Every day, the members of the town assemble in the town square to convict one of its members of membership in the mafia... a crime punishable by death.

The mechanics of a mafia game is that every cycle, one member of the town is lynched by a democratic vote. One member of the town is killed by mafia every night based on a secret mafia vote. This continues until there is only mafia left, or all the mafia is dead. The special roles are assigned at complete random.

The Detective: Every night, the Detective can investigate one person from the town. They have a 75% chance of finding out that person's identity correctly. 25% of the time, they find misleading planted evidence, and an innocent will investigate as a mafia member, or a mafia member will investigate as a member of the town. (There is one Detective plus one for every 11 players in the game.)

The Blood Brothers: These members of the town know each other immediately upon sight. They know that they can trust their blood brothers (or sisters) not to be mafia. They have sworn an oath of loyalty to each other, but in public, may pretend not to know each other at all. (If there are less than or equal to 10 players, there are no Blood Brothers. At 11 players, there are 2. 21 players, there are 3.)

The Vigilante: This masked individual makes sure others in the town are safe at night. The vigilante checks on one home every night, and if there are any unwanted visitors, the vigilante wards them off. If this happens, the vigilante does not learn the attacker's identity, but does know that an attack was made on that person. There are two vigilantes if there are 15 or more members of the town to start. The vigilante cannot protect themselves, but they can protect each other.

The Mafia: The mafia makes up about a quarter of the town's population, rounded up. At night, they secretly decide on one person to kill.

The Crime Boss: If there are three or more members of mafia, there is a Crime Boss who can break ties.

The Butcher: The Butcher killed Detective Rastley in the first place, and was one of his secret apprentices. After being paid off handsomely by the mafia, he or she betrayed the Detective, but retained all of the learned skills... The butcher can investigate one person every cycle in the same way the Detective does, with a 75% chance of success. There is only a Butcher if there are 3 or more mafia.

I'm in any game you run, Ms. Meows. :D Character concept soon.

Boosh.

Clara can haul the bodies off to the burial grounds.

Of course I'm in. It'll be a blast and I know you're brilliant at handling the possibilities.

Now, where to be silly and bring back Dan the Baker, or make something new and different.

I take it all pm's are illegal....except between Blood Brothers? (And maybe exposed Mafiosa) I think we may need a point of no-one may publicly reveal their roles?

And here is my character!

I don't know....no PMs might be the reason the games lost their flavor. It really hinders your ability to play psych out games with your opponents.

EDIT: Removed previous post until we know what era we are playing in.

Yeah, I'm alright with unlimited pm's, (even if I suck at them). Just we did have occasional problems - but with unlimited we don't have to worry about people subtly breaking the rules.

Willard has an astounding amount of difficulty living up to the astounding success of his first novel... perhaps a life threatening situation will provide just the inspiration he needs to get back to the top.

Count me in!

Any particular decade for this one, Ms. Meowselsworth?

She mentioned that it would be in the 1920s, I believe.

Fantastic...

Hopefully we can get more amazing new people in.... like the Studpuffin.

*\o/* 'Go Mafiosa'

Hey, it is good enough to get me back. :P

Thanks for your contribution, but I'm actually waiting for a response from the devs. You know, a real response. [/snooty]

I'd be very interested in seeing a mafia game where Meowselsworth and Studpuffin were both players. Wheeeeoooo.

Oh, scary!

Looks like you're running the next game then...

Gah, my pride! This must be what the rules forums are like!

Not quite like the rules forum. Nobody made fun of "your mom" yet.

Only six so far. We could use half-a-dozen more!

I could play 2 characters?

I think I would go insane with two goats running around. No thanks.

The only way it'd work is if they had the same role (counted as 1 PC).

But we don't want this too become too clique-y. So join us everyone! Got an idea for a character, join us!

I'm not sure how to play a game such as this. Is there a guide somewhere or a rule book or an exemplar?

Yep, we have done a few games like this last year.

RyukosMysteryMurderTour
Wolves Of The Weirwood

Basically, you create a personality. Meows will assign us all a role. And then we do some free-form talking, at the end of a real-time week - one person is voted out. Also the Mafia strikes, removing another player. Generally it's all taken in good friendly manner - although there is a 'winner', we are all winners if we have fun (and then there's the potential of more games).

Hi, mousestalker. It's effectively a pbp version of the mafia party game, which I'd love to play in real life.

This'll be my first game like this too, mousestalker. :)

Thank you. I'll see if I can't cobble something together by way of a concept. :)

Bring along anybody else who likes to develop characters and play all sorts of mind games, mousestalker!

That's lucky then, I ain't got a mind t' play games with.

Have you seen the price of tea in china? My word. I think I'll be sticking to the Pilsner for the time being... *sip*

Potential of 7 so far, and Finwa and Leo may join, I'll have to convince them. I'm hoping to get enough for blood brothers to be active and the special mafia roles as well.

Aye, this is open to anyone. So annoyed that you cannot get a pbp game, join us.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I know with PM's, some of us tried to telegraph that they were occurring (private conversations), while others were completely hidden. If we allow PMing, is there any rule or convention about using them?

I kind of wish that I could enforce any rules with regards to PMing, but there's not really a way to CC me on anything... I think if I were CCed people would be less inclined to use metagame implications. PMs should be IC, I think, as we are playing as characters, not as players.

This sounds fun. I'll give it a shot!

This is my first time too!

I forgot to mention the rules on whether mafia members know each other. I'm inclined to give them the power of collaboration early on as a default, but rounding down mafia numbers according to player numbers. 11 players means 2 mafia, 12 players means 3 mafia... but they all know one another. What do the rest of you think? Otherwise, we will go with the rule that they find out about each other if they attack one another rule.

Malcom Incinerator... That has a nice ring to it.

I'm game for any rules!

So we have nine so far. It would be lovely to have an even dozen and have three mafiosi.

I would be happy to be of service.

I'll start contacting others from past mafia games to come join. I imagine Leo will want to get in on this too. Sorry I screwed up your character name, Doug! It's been corrected.

Leo is in, just needs a character

I could go for a sweet liqueur or a mint julep on a hot day like today. Yes, I know it is snowing... but my father always said it was hot enough for a mint julep.

*sips slowly, ice clanking in glass*

MmmmMmmm, mighty fine, yessir.

"Mint julep? That'd keep thee cool on warm days. I ain't seen all that many of them."

"My days are as cool as t' grave, it's brass monkeys in me home."

*Sups heavily of the pint of best bitter*

Sorry still trying to come up with a voice, failing and falling back on the usual brogue.

"Nothing goes with a Mint Julep than a thin slice of Scrafton Flaming Stone on toast. Would you like some?"

Coraline proffers a small plate with a piece of delicate blue marbled cheese on top of a small piece of melba toast. The cheese looks as though it might be on fire.
