DM Luke |

Shalelu leads you out of the cave mouth and into some brush that grows on the bank of the tiny stream. Just downslope, there's a babbling brook and Shalelu begins to pad her way down to its banks. Yod tags along, staying just behind her. Cha, Sari, Ishah and Eberk stay huddled just outside the cave mouth. Cha raises his head above the brush and scans the forest for dangers. Behind him, Eberk and Sari whisper to one another. The forest seems unnatrally quiet, like it's waiting for something to happen.
Suddenly, there's a shout from the trees south of the cave. Cha sees a burly-looking goblinoid, well-hidden and armed with a longbow. Figures are moving in the bushes in several different directions. It looks like Shalelu has led you into an ambush!
It looks to be just over 100' to the one with the bow.
I need an initiative roll from everyone. Cha is the only one who will act in the surprise round - well, I should say the only friendly.

DM Luke |

Okay, don't need Eberk's init to continue, since he won't act in the surprise round.
The burly goblinoid draws and fires the bow. Cha calls out to Shalelu but it is not enough warning for her to avoid the arrow. It plunges into her shoulder almost to the fletchings and she cries out in pain.
Suddenly another of the squeaky female goblin voices takes up the goblin song. The brush rustles menacingly in several directions and other voices take up the tune.
New map on the way. The new initiative order is...
Goblin Archer
Yod
Cha
Shalelu
Sari
Other Goblins
I'll insert Eberk when I get an initiative roll. Right now, the archer has won initiative and will act first in the first full round unless Eberk has a fantastic initiative roll.

Yod Akarn |

My intent is to take a shot with the crossbow at the goblin with the bow atk roll 18 + 4 total 22 damage if a hit d10 roll 9 piercing, then move to the elf and see how hurt she is, if i need to take her back to cha for healing or if she is ok to fight
if thats not ok it will have to wait till we get back to change c-ya

DM Luke |

The brute with the bow looses another arrow. This one follows the first almost exactly, slamming into Shalelu's upper arm and going all the way through. He cackles madly and reaches for another arrow.
Shal has not lost consciousness, but judging from her bleeding wounds, you're not sure how she's still standing.
Yod's bolt plows into the bushes that the goblin is using for cover. There's a guttural scream of pain to tell you that the bolt found its mark. Yod is able to cover the distance to the elf. You need to make a healing check to determine how many hit points she has left, but you judge by the ashen look of her face that it is not alot.
Cha chants in the secret magical language of the Shoanti druids. A bright ball of fire the size of an apple erupts from his palm and dances there. Cha, you still have your move action if you want it. That spell costs you 2 spell points.
Eberk runs out into the open to (23,22).
Shalelu winces as she fires her bow at her attacker. It is a surprisingly good shot, but not quite good enough. The arrow pierces the trunk of a small tree and stands there vibrating.
The updated initiaive order is:
Archer
Yod
Cha
Eberk
Shalelu
Sari
others
It is Sari's turn.

I thought I was still in the suprise round. Was planning on throwing it in the first round and taking my move action then, but looks like I lost my suprise round action?

DM Luke |

crap! You're right, you were supposed to act in the surprise round. Go ahead and roll an attack out of sequence for your first round action.

Sari |

So, did you take the cats to Disney with you? Just kidding....hope you had a nice time.
I yell obscenities at the goblins as I hurl a magic missile at the archer.
My roll is a 4 +1 for a total of 5, and I think I have 7 spell points left.
"Shut that infernal singing up.....I can't hear MY song!"
Next.

DM Luke |

Sari's missile winds its way across the battlefield and disappears in the brush. Though you cannot see the effects of your missile, you have moral conviction that it found its target.
I still owe Chris an attack this round. Once he's acted, I'll update the map, send it out and continue. I also need an initiative roll for Ishah, and an initial command.

Cha tuk |

Cool...thought I screwed up again. Roll is 16+0(?)=16. Damage is 3+2(1/level)=5. I cast my fireball at the archer as well. "Ishah stay," and I point towards Sari's feet. I move to 18,26. I think this provides me cover? The way I read it, another fireball will automatically appear for next round.

Yod Akarn |

Oh my I guess I can't leave for a day now can I.
Anyway we were ambushed at Disney, we parked out in daisy took the tram in then had to take a BUS to the park because the mono and boat were so backed up!!! We watched the parade road the people mover had lunch used our fast passes to Buzz then left for the Lego store Small world was closed for cleaning Ryan was not impressed!! "I don't like it, That makes me mad!!" But he got over it. Many sales at the Lego store had to use had to have a good will save for sure we only got 2 things the boys spent thier X-max money on lego vehicles of course.
So were back alive anyway. The cats are quite bored by the way

DM Luke |

That roll places Ishah after Shal and before Sari in the initiative order.
Cha's flame ball streakes over toward the archer, who once again dives down behind the bushes. The flame plows into the foliage, setting it alight. He screeches in anger and flees his cover. Another goblin, this one apparently the singer, scurries from the same bush in the opposite direction. After just a second, another of the dancing balls of flame erupts in Cha's hand.
Cha is only able to get to (19,26) with his 30' movement. Neither of those squares provides cover from the archer in (17,10).
Common goblis burst out of the surrounding shrubs in several places and the fight is joined! Two come from Eberk's left but are unable to attack effectively this round. Three others are forced to jump the brook and are not able to close the distance this round.
The archer was apparently displeased with Yod and his crossbow bolt, as he selects Yod as he target of his next arrow. This shaft flies errant.
New map is on the way. Fire effects are no charge - Peter Jackson's got nuthin on this game!

Cha tuk |

Gone fishing tomorrow, so I'll post tonight.
I cast my last fireball at the archer(if he's still alive when Yod's done, if not, I'll take the singer.
Roll is 17+0=17. Damage is 2+2=4. If the archer is still alive at the end of my turn, I want to move to cover, but still be in a square next to Shalelu if possible. If he's dead I'll stick where I'm at.
"Shalelu, stay close to me and I'll see what I can do about those arrows."

DM Luke |

Shalelu's lost alot of blood. She has 1 hit point remaining.
Yod, you cannot reload and fire a heavy crossbow in the same round. I did not realize this was the heavy variety in the last combat, so I think you my have gotten away with one last time. This weapon requires a full-round action to reload, and does provoke an AoO. You still get your 5' step.

DM Luke |

No AoO right now. If you attempt to reload that monstrosity with an enemy in your face - I was speaking (typing?) in the general sense.
Cha's second ball of flame speeds true and smacks the archer in the chest, leaving his leather breastplate and mangy fur smouldering. By his expression, you think you're really starting to piss him off.
His shouted attempt a common sounds more like a series of barks than anything else.
'Your friends won't save you Elf. Your blonde scalp is mine!'
Eberk's turn.

DM Luke |

Eberk does his best dwarven cuisinart impression. Two massively bloody blows later he is standing by himself in the open again.
When we get back from vacation, I'm sneaking into your house and stealing those f#&%ing loaded dice you have. Oh wait! I have a key...
It is obvious that Shalelu should be attending to her wounds, but instead she draws and fires another arrow at your now-smoking opponent. Like the last, this arrow misses, sailing off into the forest never to be recovered. She screams in frustration.
Ishah stays.
Sari's turn.

Sari |

Don't worry Melissa, I have the key and he won't get it from me willingly...
I am sick of seeing arrows blaze by the big dude! "Here's a sparkly one for you!!" I scream.
I cast magic missile again (wishing I had another spell) on the guy at (16,10). This should leave me with 5 spell points left. I roll a 4 +1 for a total of 5.
"Take that," I scream. I pet Ishah on the head. "We don't like stinky, smelly goblins, do we girl?"

DM Luke |

The common goblins (what's left of them) continue their charge.
"Bloody Dwarf make good Meat!"
The archer has chosen a new target in Eberk. His shot is true as the arrow buries itself painfully into the dwarf's thigh. Eberk is hit for 10 poins of damage! That was close to a x3 crit (rolled a 19).
Yod's turn. New map on the way.

Cha tuk |

Back from fishing...no keeper grouper(caught and released a dozen shorts) but plenty of Black Sea Bass and grunts...I'll be cleaning fish for a couple of hours tomorrow.
More questions from the rule-impaired over here...Casting an healing spell is a Standard Action and drawing forth a healing potion is a move action, thus I can do both in one round and still have a 5' step left? And Shalelu, on her turn, could theoretically take the potion(Move Action) and drink it(Standard Action)?
Does anyone else notice that the ooc command seems to automatically end sometimes, maybe after a hard return without issuing the /ooc command?

DM Luke |

Well, a bad day fishin is better than a good day doing most other things. Hopefully you at least got drunk or something.
You're right on the ooc tag - I think it gets closed automatically on a hard return.
I would 'rule zero' the acceptance of the potion from Cha as a free action, meaning she could drink the potion as her standard action and still have her move. For the record, 'rule zero' means that the DM's word overrules other printed mechanics.

Yod Akarn |

Im moving to 21,26 for a clear shot at the bow shooter in 19,10
then takng a shot at him atk roll 19 + 4 total 23
possible critical! confirm roll 16 + 4 total 20
damage if hit D10 roll 6p if a critical second D10 roll 9p
The elf might die but you might not be here to see it !!
I want to try his bow after he's dead
You might not find her dice because I've already stolen them!
They work real good!

DM Luke |

Yod moves out into the open and lines up his shot. The bolt catches the archer in the center of his chest and sinks deep. It grasps the shaft and opens it's mouth as if to say something, then falls over backwards and lies motionless on the ground.
Cha's healing magic washes over Shalelu. She stands up a little straighter and clears her throat. The arrow in her shoulder backs out of the wound and falls at her feet as the torn flesh stitches itself back together to staunch the bleeding. She still looks like warm death, but she moves a little easier. She takes the potion from Cha's outstretched hand.
Eberk's turn.

Cha tuk |

Well, a bad day fishin is better than a good day doing most other things. Hopefully you at least got drunk or something.
Did I say a bad day of fishing...not really. Grouper fishing is not my speciality. I try, but... We were pulling in sea bass an grunts one after another for about 4 hours. Good eating and I'll take them. Check it out.

Bizarre...link works but not if you click it.

Eberk Ungart |

I yell damn and fish out my CLW potion. I think I can drink it now if I do not move or anything else. (i think it is 1d8+2?) I roll a 6+2=8.
Just for the record my rolls have not been as stellar as usual. You have seen me roll many 20's in a night before. I do not think I have rolled one yet. I hardly think rolling a 14 should be grounds for stealin my dice. I did not know yod was stealin rolls on my dice, maybe that is why I have not rolled any 20's. That said I would be happy to rent my dice out for a minimal charge to any and all.

DM Luke |

Maybe Ishah is stealing your 20s.
Eberk, you are correct. Fishing the potion out is a move action and drinking it is a standard action. And I typically say a CLW potion is d8 + 3, so give yourself another hp.
Shalelu takes a step backwards and quaffs the potion handed to her by Cha. She then draws her short sword to face the nearest goblin.
Sari's turn - and she's watching a movie with her sister tonight. See y'all tomorrow for the bacchinalea!

DM Luke |

Sari's missile catches the charging goblin in the face and blasts him off his feet. He twitches for just a moment, then lays still.
The singing goblin looks over her shoulder, perhaps for direction from the large goblinoid that you now surmise must be Bruthazmus the Bugbear. Her eyes widen in alarm as she takes in his unmoving corpse. She screams a shrill command to what's left of her brood and raises one of those piercing high-pitched bone whistles to her lips. She begins blowing it for all she's worth.
The two remaining goblins turn tail and flee.
Both goblins performed the run action, so they quadruple moved. New map on the way. It is Yod's turn.

DM Luke |

Yod's move is perfectly legal. A double move is simply substituting a move for a standard action. I would not rule that you could draw on the same turn you ran (like the goblins just did).
Cha's turn.

DM Luke |

The goblin crone turns from her fleeing troops and slain hero - back to face you, whistle still perched on her black lips. With both Yod and Cha bearing down on her, she's not singing, blowing or laughing now.
Eberk's turn.

DM Luke |

Mrs. Cha - I'm going to have to defer to Sari. She is the Keeper of the Schedule around here. It sounds like a good time to me, and I know I'm not on call.
Eberk charges in behind Yod and Cha.
An errant shot from Shalelu's bow splits a sapling tree very short of the goblin warriors beating feet. You're not sure if more are coming, but those two at least have plainly had their fill of the fight.
"Nasty little runts!" the elf calls after them. "Run home and tell Ripnugget that Bruthazmus is food!"
Sari's turn.

Sari |

I aim a magic missile at the singing goblin. I have 3 spell points left. I roll 2 +1 for a total of 3 points of damage against the singing lady.
Take that you nasty beast! Try singing in tune next time! Get her boys....she offends my ears!
BTW, Animal Kingdom is fine with us.

DM Luke |

The ugly little creature takes the magic missile right on the top of her head. She takes a cautious step back and screeches out a phrase in draconic. She claps her hands in a quick gesture in the direction of Eberk. Eberk make a Will Save. For the record, it's a DC (15 + spell lvl) Spellcraft skill check to identify a spell being cast.
She also draws a phial of clear liquid from her belt with her off hand.
