"So many languages I don't know," Bydar admits and hopes the others are up to diplomacy in this.

The little man snorts and laughs, then drops his legs over the side of the bench and begins kicking his feet back and forth. Almost childlike in a way, he puts his hands on the bench and leans forward.

Sylvan:
"Come in peace, you say? Well, that's good - really good. I was just quaking in my little iron boots."

The little man grimaces, spits once to the side, then glares at your group. As he stares, his eyes begin glowing a bright red, and it seems like his cap has also started to emit a similar red light. A thin line of drool escapes his mouth as he yells through pointed yellow teeth.

Sylvan:
"Again, before I lose my temper. Who are ye, and what ye be wanting?!

Bydar looks at the others, not sure of what's being said, but noting the humor and demands of this fellow at least. Both a little on the disturbing side.

Well, I know we're supposed to see where this door leads, come back and report what we've found to the fae. Whether the fae will be satisfied with a 'we opened the door and found an ironbooted fae guy there' is hard to say.

He looks to Belka, "If he's asking, you can tell him I'm Baron Bydar, and I and our delegation hope to explore a bit. Ask him if someone claims these lands if you would?"

"He does want to know who we are and what we want here," Belka says, without breaking eye contact with the offensive little fey. Her eyes are narrowing.

Sylvan:
"The man who just spoke is his lordship, the Baron Bydar of the City of Corbinus. My name is Belka, may it please you. We wish to explore the First World a bit. If that answer suffices, might we be honoured to hear your own name and station, and would you tell us where in the First World we are and what the local sights might be?"

Hoi Polloi says nothing and makes no threatening movements, but he does quietly step in front of the Elves, hopefully partially shielding them from the iron-booted Fey's glowing eyes.

The little fey's mouth opens slightly, hanging there in a stupor for several seconds. He quickly recovers and shakes his head.

Sylvan:
"You want to explore a bit? No way, lassie, no way. This land is ruled by Lady Thorn. It's her personal garden, see? No tours, no exploring, no uninvited guests. So if you don't have an invitation, it'd be best if you turned around."

He grins widely, then continues,

Sylvan:
"I'm actually doing you a favor. Some of the other employees around here wouldn't give you a chance to turn around. But I'm feeling lazy today..."

He pulls his boots back up to his chest, then turns his head away from you while waving you away.

"This gentleman has informed me that these are the private lands -- to be specific, the garden -- of one Lady Thorn," Belka tells Bydar. "Uninvited visitors are not welcomed, and we are asked to leave. I recommend we do so. I'll ask whether we can get an invitation, and then we need to beat feet. If you say 'noble', you usually say 'guards', and you didn't say anything about starting a war here when we left home. Besides, there's the Elves to think of."

Sylvan:
"I thank you for your kindness, good sir, and if I might have the honour of your name, I shall remember it fondly. We'll leave now. When you report our presence to Lady Thorn, would you tell her we should like to secure an invitation to tour her lovely estate? It's fine if you don't want to; I just wanted to make it clear that we wish to offer our respect to the Lady. Good day and good rest to you, sir."

Sense Motive DC 20 (& Bridgette):
Though he is difficult to read, you believe that this little fey is absolutely convinced in what he is telling you.

The fey narrows his eyes, but nods once. In perfect Common, he replies, "Aye, withdraw, Baron. Ye have all been respectful, so I'll do you a favor and forget you came through the door."

Looking at Belka, he continues:

Sylvan:
"You don't want an invitation. Those mortals she invites her always end up staying longer than they should. Take a close look."

Saying this, he points at a small group of wildflowers near your feet. Glancing down, you see a variety of colors with delicate petals... but as you watch, the petals writhe and twist very slightly... just enough for your to make out tiny screaming faces on each of them.

"Lady Thorn is one of those who thinks all the lands, and those who live upon them, should serve the First World. And here, names are power, so I'll respectfully decline to give mine. Now go, your intrusion has been noted and guards are on the way."

He turns his head to stare down a pathway and then stands up on the bench. Without looking back at you, he waves his hand in a dismissive gesture.

Let me know if you want to do anything else before leaving.

The young Kellid girl's brow furrows in thought. "Look, I think... I think I might be able to set up some kind of magical protections. I'd need stuff, though. Expensive stuff, sad to say. Assuming you want to return to Corbenic as quickly as possible...

Travel back is quick, and despite seeming like you were gone for most of the day, it appears to be little more than an hour after you first stepped through the door. Before leaving, you gather what you can to try and disguise the entrance until you can come up with a more permanent solution.

The elves are filled with a mix of wonder and curiosity. Almost all of them seem enchanted with the leaves on the trees that surround this area. They also gesture toward the trees, apparently impressed by their height.

Returning to town is a joyous occasion, and many among the crowd wave and cheer as you ride past. Notably, you see a number of men wearing similar black leather armor around town. It would seem the mercenaries camped on your doorstep are spending some of their coin in town.

-----

We still need to have the Council meeting, but it should be quick.

I am going to assume you follow the fey's instructions for notifying them?

Finally, can I assume you have somebody find food, clothes, and shelter for the strange elves?

Is there anything else you want to do, investigate, ask about, before moving to the council meeting?

Female Human Summoner 4: Init +3 (+1 Dex., +2 Reactionary); Perception +0; AC 15 (+1 Dex., +4 armour); hp 23/30; Fort +3; Ref +2; Will +5

"Right," Belka says once the group has returned to Corbenic. "I'll be assuming you mean to put our visitors from another world up at the castle? Right here'n'now, I'm volunteering to help figure out their language. That... and I'd 'preciate it if I could set up a basement room in the castle ta make something. I'll need the help of a locksmith and a blacksmith, but I think I can set up some beautiful security for that gate. I'll make ye a formal proposal for the Council, if ye like."

"When it comes to security, I think I'd yield to Bridgette and Raxus, it's more their fields than mine unless a bit of divine protection is called for," He says, not wanting to step on any toes and besides that, they are warriors unlike himself, "We'll see what we can do to get you into the castle. Maybe get you a proper tower instead of the basement if construction is coming along quickly enough. I plan on using spells to allow me to talk to the elves soon. That should help find out some immediate things about them." If the others are amendable, I may ask if they think Belka would make a good magister. She's certainly not above hard work.

He looks to the elves and says in Elven <"All will be well."> They showed no sign of using it earlier, but perhaps it will soothe them.

"Ari, if you would, please go on and pass the news to the barons that in the manner they asked as soon as you can. If they have more knowledge about this Lady a certain guard told us of, I want to know it."

Raxus was glad to be home. He didn't say much, as usual. He simply went to the kennels to play with the dogs.

The Council convenes this month under a bright, sunny sky. Talk of the elves has spread throughout the city, and many of the common folk now speak of the new alliance with the elves who live in the nearby forests.

Everyone is in attendance at the Council, and Oleg asks for Captain Milius Taver, leader of the Band of Hallorn, to speak.

Taver is a short bald human who has more scars about his head than most have on their entire bodies. He wears a brown surcoat that while nice, has obviously been in storage for some time if the wrinkles and frayed edges are any indication. Still, he apparently made an effort to dress up to meet you, so that says he understands propriety if nothing else.

Standing before the group, he bows his head, low enough to satisfy decorum, but not so low that he would seem to be ingratiating. He puts his hands behind his back and assumes what most in the room recognize as a military "at ease" stance. Looking at Bydar, he speaks, "Baron, please accept my gratitude for allowing my men to camp across the river on our journey. Your man, Garess, has seen to our comfort, and it is much appreciated." He bows again, significantly lower this time.

Returning to his former posture, he continues, "My Lord, we have been in service to the south for the past three years serving in Pitax. Our contract ended and we voted to move back north in search of more opportunities. Many in Brevoy and the surrounding areas have put out calls for men in our line of business, and we would seek an arrangement with one of those Houses."

"Unfortunately, most of the new contracts won't be available for a few more months. We need a place to stay until then. I would like your permission to remain encamped in our present location - or another of your choosing - for the next three months. We would sign a formal contract for the duration, during which you would pay us a stipend for garrison duty. In return, I will ensure my men have enough pay and leave to frequent the merchants and shops in your city."

"I do not know if any of you have ever contracted with free soldiers before, so if you have questions, I would be happy to answer them."

Knowledge (nobility) DC 25:
Taver is a family that once served Lodovka. There was some kind of scandal that caused them to become dishonorably removed from the family's service. Soldiers in the Taver family were known as excellent soldiers and military leaders, and many of the line were knighted by the King.

Knowledge (local) DC 20:
The Band of Hallorn is a group of mercenary soldiers that has existed for nearly a hundred years. During their existence, they have appeared in nearly every conflict in the River Kingdoms. While some mercenary companies are rather lax in both fighting doctrine and discipline, the Band of Hallorn is known for operating in a manner very similar to an official army or military organization. Discipline and sound battle tactics are a hallmark of the group, and all of the soldiers are skilled combatants with bow, sword, and spear.

Sense Motive DC 15:
When speaking about Pitax, Taver stumbles through a bit quick for your taste. There is something about Pitax that bothers him, though he tries to hide it.

Raxus knew nothing of soldiers. He'd been appointed as military leader of their new land and he felt woefully out of his depth.

The others seemed amiable to this man Taver, which was good enough for Raxus. There was an opportunity here to learn how to go about fulfilling his duties.

Raxus nodded his approval to Bydar, saying nothing for now.

Captain Taver listens intently as Bridgette speaks. He nods in agreement, "Setting up some mutual training sessions would certainly be acceptable. If I may be blunt, such mutual training sessions would be beneficial if my company is called into real action along side yours. I believe those responsible for the defense of your city would agree?" he asks gesturing toward Kesten.

The Warden nods, "Indeed I do. Any familiarity between our Guards and the Band would be advantageous."

Wow, sorry, I must have missed the other posts when I made my update Thursday.

Bydar asks:
"What size stipend would you ask in exchange for your duty? Will you commit solidly for that duration, or should a better and sooner call from another employer arise, do you reserve the right to depart earlier? I confess, I'm also curious as to Pitax. Has a need for Free Soldiers there faded for a particular reason?"

Taver waits until Bydar finishes, then responds in a respectful tone, "My Lord, we would require 2,000 gp per month, and we would commit to the contract for the entire duration. If another job arises, we would allow it to pass. For men in this business, adherence to the contract is of paramount importance. After all, who would hire soldiers known to leave at the first sign of a few more gold."

He pauses, then continues in a thoughtful voice, "With respect, Baron, not all mercenaries sign on out of greed. I, and the other leaders, are simple men - if we agree to terms, we will honor them."

"As for Pitax... my men and I are professionals. I will not order them to raise arms against defenseless commoners."

-----

Belka, got it. We'll handle that after the Council meeting.

The 2,000 gp per month equals 1 BP, which you will receive back the following month as the soldiers spend money in Corbenic. So it's a zero-sum deal, but you have to pay it first, then get it back the following month.

"Pitax ordered you to raise arms against defenseless commoners? This is something I would hear more of, Captain, though I am glad to hear if so you refused.
