Welcome to Goldnet: Your private connection to the rest of Prosperity! Your Aspis account has been created for you by our helpful Relocation Services Team, and comes with Bronze-level features to help communicate with employers and fellow employees here on Prosperity!
Discussion thread here: First things first, we'll wrap up character creation in here. I'll stagger starting gameplay as people post completed characters, so that I can start hooking your character into the planet and each other a little more organically than providing everyone one box text.
Let me know if there's any additional questions you have on character creation or in-game information, and let's get this game rolling!

Beyond classes I mean party roles.
We have a frontline who will be a passable gunner in starships (melee vesks are hard to be useful in starship combat, at least I struggled with mine.
Ranged operative could end up with a large skill repertoire but probably best suited to gunner or pilot?
Mechanic lends itself to engineering or science officer.
Solarian video star lends itself to Captain quite well, in terms of roleplay and stats. Wanting to be center stage and might have a decent enough CHA to bull off diplomacy.
The Mystics can kind of do most things cant they?
That leaves most things covered I would think. Depending on Solarian build we might be lacking someone to support our vesk in melee, at which point I might need to do a melee option to back them up, which puts me at Solarian, Operative, or Soldier I think.
I am not too keen on a soldier, Solarian could be neat but a str based solarian is somewhat lacking in out of combat usefulness. That I think leaves a melee operative.
That is of course unless our Vesk is happy being the only thing running at the scary monsters.
Have I missed anything or completely missed the point anywhere? Thoughts?

What do you want to do on Incubation Prime? Fill the greatest documentary on life in the rugged frontier
Where did you come from, and why did you leave? I come from Castrovel via Absalom Station, where I filmed many of my closing scenes where I received some kind of medal or commendation or another from the leaders Absalom Station for thwarting a nefarious plot by dastardly evil doers or a rampaging monster terrorizing a well beloved colony.
When you disembark in Prosperity, what's the first thing you're gonna do? First, find a bar to get rid of the tenseness of space flight, then seek out the local leaders and offer my services as an explorer/hero-for-hire.
Alias for DekoTheBarbarian, presenting Kindu Rassi, down on his luck A-List action vid sensation seeking to reclaim the glory days of his past by filming his adventures on the wild frontier!
Combination front line fighter/face man. Took the Heavy Armor Proficiency feat for better durability and the solar weapon manifestation. Obviously, if we obtain a starship, I will be the captain. Who else will have the rugged good looks and sheer personality to lead this ragtag group of ne'er-do-wells? Someone bring me some sham-pag-ne!
(And now for some reason I'm turning into Zapp Brannigan... Gods help me...)

I recently read a post somewhere on here where someone was talking soldier skills and said "Build your soldier like it's Chewbacca - Piloting, Intimidate, Engineering, Survival - and then you're at least a secondary for 3 of the Starship roles" and I really took that to heart.
Also, looks like Kindu will be able to handle some front-line hits with our vesk, so we should be alright in that regard. Welcome Kindu!
Also, I'd like to point out that for all of the gentle teasing the TTRPG community gives the "Our campaign starts in a tavern," 3 of the 4 completed applications have a variant on "First thing I'm doing is getting a drink." Really making this easy for me, everybody :)

I was starting to lean toward technomancer over mystic for my biotechnician, actually. I know that means losing a really nice source of healing, but overall I like the technomancer spell list and class skills better for the scientist-type character I'm imagining. Plus, the character seems like he should be highly intelligent, not extremely wise.
I came across this a couple pages above the biotechnician theme and thought it might be a good starting point for my character:
Iratha Incorporated
Starting a biotech firm on the world occupied by masters in the industry might seem like a terrible business decision, but Iratha Incorporated founders Iraeon (NG female damaya lashunta operative) and Thalus Enthremian Damru of House Alo (CN male kasatha envoy) have turned the potentially disastrous endeavor into a financial success. Well aware of the system-wide reputation Bretheda holds in the field, the two chose to establish their corporation in Trillidiem as an assertion of their company’s quality. By specializing exclusively in humanoid augmentations, the corporation has been able to carve out a profitable niche for itself, but it has also drawn the attention of drow arms dealers who see a potential opening to infiltrate the
competitive biotech industry.

I'm not super-concerned with sources of healing - I've been running Dead Suns with an IRL group and they're currently on book 4, with a party of a Solarian, two Soldiers, a Technomancer, and (until recently) an operative - and I think I've gotten a character to drop once in the campaign (though I did get the Solarian to 1 HP in book 3... that was a proud moment). I find the SP system makes the combats more forgiving, so losing a source of healing is... well, not a huge deal. Plus if Peet makes his mystic, that will still give us one.
I REALLY like that backstory hook - so I'm seeing like you have 'shadow backers' in Iratha Incorporated, where one owner knows what's going on and is giving some support, and the other will find out about it when it's safe and profitable? That sound about in line with what you're thinking?

That's exactly it. Interestingly enough, the thing I feel like I'm not close to a decision on is race. I've considered android, damaya lashunta, and bleachling gnome...contemplative I think would be really cool except I can't see how his basically vestigial body would be capable of receiving augmentations, whether cybernetic or biotech. Does anyone have any suggestions that you think would be cool/fun?
In the past I've thought an android who is making himself less mechanical and more biological through biotech would be fun to play. Of course now that Part Worlds is out, I could double down on that idea by playing an SRO rather than an android.

Meet Jink, your pilot, and hacker, and guy being forced to do stuff he would rather not.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He shouldered his pack with a grin as he made his way down the halls to hangar 102. He was getting to fly again!
When he arrived he was was rushed into the control room by a nervous looking human. He wasn't paying any attention though, too excited to get behind the stick again.
Leaving dock went as it always did, too many delays when he was soo close but still so far from being free to fly.
It was a long trip they were making, and he looked forward to every moment of it.
Days passed and the human was relaxed as the ship neared their destination. When he was hailed to stop for an inspection human who had been sitting off to one corner of the control room shot up, panicked. He jumped up and rushed over to Jink and tolled him not to stop. When Jink protested am pistol was pressed against the back of his head and was told to keep going, and not let the security forces stop them.
Jink may be scatterbrained, but he is far from stupid. He flew. And flew well. The security forces chased, and must have lost their patience as they began to fire at their craft. Jink dodged for all he was worth and pushed the ship so hard bolts were groaning. He brought the ship through an asteroid field in hopes of loosing the security forces, and keeping his life. He did.
What he didn't manage to keep was the cargo. A shot had breached the cargo bay bulkheads, and the vacuum of space had welcomed the goods inside.
When he landed the ship the human kept his gun on the back of Jink's head and lead Jink to a small room where calls were made and his fate was decided. They gave him a choice. His life, or his service. He was in a great amount of debt for the cargo they claimed he had lost, and you just don't argue when you have a gun to your head. He liked being alive though, so his service it was.
That was when they shipped him off to Incubation Prime.
Since then he has been on and off world a few times. Always leaving with full cargo bays, and coming back with bays full again. They send a Vesk with him now instead of that human from before. The Vesk knows who to speak to at customs to get them waved through, and knows who to slip some cred sticks to to keep them quiet.
Of course he wasn't called Jink before this all happened.
Edited Story a bit
Jink_
Please let me know what your thoughts are on the backstory? Does it fit into your idea of the world?
Also I added a Vesk so if Gilthanis wants to slide into the story there he can.
I specifically left the organisation unnamed so you can do with that what you will. This does also rely somewhat on the organisation either making me fly the group around or letting me do what I want when they don't have jobs for me so long as I don't go off world type of deal.
I really like the floating gasbag self evolving aliens from alien archive.
A Nuar could work really well and be a bit unique too.
I like Urog too.
Hahaha the barathu are weird. I like the look of the urogs. A nuar does seem like it would just have to be an interesting story, so maybe that's the best choice...I need to read their entry again because I don't remember where they're from or anything.
Not quite as much info as I expected :P
A tail that goes on for days though ;)
What has two thumbs and definitely laughed at his own joke while writing it?
I see spaceship stuff wont be very important... Whoops.
Due to a couple of story elements, I imagine most of the action is going to be planetside and not planet-hopping, so any starship combats are either going to be incidental or I'm going to be making up some sort of more 'dogfight'-y rules for suborbital combat. That said, I expect to have a reason or two to throw in a starship combat - and vehicle chases are 100% going to fit into what I'm thinking for normal operations.
Also, I think we're going to use Roll20.net for mapping (it's really easy to whip up maps and fog of war and things like that) so if you could DM me good e-mails to invite you to the game, I can finish getting that set up.
I'm thinking starting Gameplay with completed characters tomorrow/Monday to get the ball rolling. :)
GM Niles
Roll20 is no good for me... I do most of my posting from work and Roll20 forwhateverreason is blocked.
Nilan Milarne
Here is Niles R's character. An "on the run" operative explorer from Akiton.
Nilan is a lanky, tall human with grey eyes and light colored hair. He has a almost permanent 5 o clock shadow. He wears a dark brimmed hat and a duster over his second skin armor. Each hip sports the well worn Semibalsa Wooden handle of an analog pistol.
Okay! I've decided on bantrid for the race and I'm not changing my mind! Here's a link to the character sheet on MythWeavers. Still need to pick equipment, skill ranks, and spells known, but Caloo Ch'Micia will be rolling in near you before long! =)
What do you want to do on Incubation Prime? Study new genetic material and continue development of biotech.
Where did you come from, and why did you leave? I left Bretheda because one of the co-owners of Iratha Incorporated didn't like that I was willing to work in morally gray areas; but the other maintains communication with me, and in fact he prompted me to come to Incubation Prime.
When you disembark in Prosperity, what's the first thing you're gonna do? Find a way to get the space to set up a lab (I probably don't have enough credits, so I'm sure I'll be doing someone plenty of favors).
Don’t forget fellow PC’s, that the weapons you buy come preloaded with a battery/batteries so you are not required to purchase batteries unless you want extras. That might free up extra cash.
“Weapons that use standard ammunition (arrows, charges, darts, mini-rockets, petrol, rounds, scattergun shells, etc.) are sold preloaded. For weapons with other forms of ammunition (such as grenades), ammunition must be purchased separately.”
Hey, guys.
I'm supposed to be putting together a Reptoid Mystic with the cultist theme, but I'm having trouble making it work.
Cultist gives + to CON so my racial scores before points would be:
STR 12, DEX 8, CON 11, INT 10, WIS 10, CHA 12.
I had envisioned him as a STR fighter so maybe I would end up with STR 16, DEX 8, CON 12, INT 11, WIS 14, CHA 12
Is this too MAD an array?
I’ve seen worse. I think that should be okay for stats, but I’m relatively new to SF.
I was nudging people towards Rotgut, but you are free to make your own call - it is, after all, a roleplaying game :)
For inventing NPCs, I would ask you to keep them ultra-minor - shoving a street urchin out of the way or saying something sassy to a shopkeep should be fine, but a core part of the game is the planet's isolation and the factions that populate it. If you have an idea that you're really pumped about, PM me and I'll work with you to fit it in :)
Working on a post now, I'll get it up this evening (EST).
Jink_
This is what I am asking about in my last post. I want to know if you are going to be doing more "let it ride" or more of a "roll each round for your actions" type of style.
Like the example for stealth, will we roll stealth once each round, or once for the entire process of sneaking into an enemy stronghold, or somewhere in between.
Jink_
@Blask
It is pretty cool so far. I wasn't expecting it to turn this way, but it is fun and interesting that it has.
Jink I think doesn't really trust anyone. He does trust you more than the rest though. But he has also seen enough shit on Incubation that he is practical and thinks that everyone is as likely to kill him as any other.
I am thinking of changing that last part though. Unfortunately I mentioned it in one of my posts.
I think, depending on how long they have been working together Jink would have started like that but now realises that they need to stick together, and even though Blask is a bit course for his tastes, Jink views him as a close friend and tries to steer him away from his more criminal tendencies.
