Forgot the sense motive roll:
sense motive: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 2 = 13
And what the heck, let's really layer on the buffs. Use Channel the Gift to grab a Barkskin from Rufeo (duration 100mins), and just before we reach the village, change shape with Many Forms to become a Troglodyte. (Doesn't have the Stench ability).

I am good with 2 hours of Life Bubble for the party.
The detective reaches into his haversack and removes a small case. With practiced care, he opens the worn leather. Fendel delicately removes the pair of fine diamond lenses from his eyes, then swaps them out for the goggles inside.
With the Goggles of Minute Seeing, my Perception only drops to 27 (due to Heightened Awareness), but my Disable Device rises to 28.

You lay down your buffs as you approach, with Sinuhotep casting Freedom of Movement on Ariana, Eadie, Ki’lala and Rufeo.
Etherial images of buildings and stairs rise up out of the sands, looking like an almost after image of a millenia-old construction. A stable rises up through the ground underneath Tahonikepsu, passing through her as if nothing.
Mindless undead... So boring. Gives the rest of us a bad name. Sinuhotep smooths out his robes calmly. So I’m your choice? Very well. Let's destroy this Obelisk! Tahonikepsu, I assume that you and the other Sages can take care of the rest?
Torch picks up Amenopheus to his carpet, before flying off into the storm. Moments later, you hear the sounds of raucous laughter as lightning strikes and fireballs fly off in the distance. Dhiara sprints through the sand unimpeded, and the sounds of crunching bone and rapid strikes echo over the blowing sands. The dragon, Tahonikepsu, roars, flying confidently off into the windstorm, her powerful wings beating hard against the onslaught.
As the Sages take off, grasping hands arise from the sands attempt to grab at all of you.
Grasping Rotting Hands: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17
It’s a rather pathetic sort of grabbing, as they sort of pat you down feebly without actually grabbing anything. Still, it renders the entire map difficult terrain.
Oh, Sinuhotep looks down, unblinkingly, at the undead hands that are attempting to grasp everything but him.... That must have been why you wanted those Freedom of Movement spells!
Your visibility is currently limited to 30 feet from the Windstorm. The moaning sound of restless dead comes from all around you, but you see nothing on the map just yet!
The Giant Monolith could be disabled in a few ways: Good old Fashioned Disable Device (in 2d4 rounds if you can disable Magic Traps, this thing is Complicated!) or by perusing the patterns of the Heiroglyphs (Knowledge arcana, planes, or religion) as a standard action. You need to be adjacent to the pillar to be able to do so.
Also, we’re keeping to initiative, even though no foes are visible yet but the grasping hands hazard.

Round #1: AC 26, T 11; S 22, D 12; alchemical grease (4 hours), life bubble (2 hours), +5 soothe syrup (1 hr), +5 antiplague (1 hr), freedom of movement (70 mins), remove sickness (2/100), shield (3/10), enlarge person (2/10), bless weapon (1/10)
Eadie waits in the initiative queue for Quenly to act. “Are you still casting blessing of fervor, Quenly?”
Assuming he does, she stalks 60’ (single move) around the obvious firing quadrants from the obelisk. Freedom of movement means the grasping zombie hands do not slow her at all.
“Eadie Navhelan fears you NOT, Black Moo. Your cow-ardly army will learn to fear me – and soon.”
The warrior readies to power attack a foe that comes within reach, prioritising larger targets over smaller. She will certainly take an AoO against anything that provokes her.

Well, the good news it that I can indeed disable magical traps. Is it 2d4 rounds to try the knowledge checks as well? I would obviously take the fastest route possible.
I will not dismiss H.A at this time.
"I certainly take a Freedom of Movement spell, if you got one t'spare."
Seeing the sea of hands before them,"Seconded!"
The detective pulls two vials, drinking one of them immediately.
Using extract of Alchemical Allocation in preparation of my potion of Fly next round.
Quenly's Dragon
Quenly's dragon has blindsense with a range of 60' and does not normally have to make perception checks to detect things within that radius.
The dragon will communicate the location of anything it senses within that range to the team. Its telepathy also has a range of 60'.
Anybody need flying over to the obelisk? Sinuhotep? And I can provide Freedom of Movement if Sinuhotep cannot, but our priority should be reaching the obelisk yes?
The little dragon readies a breath weapon attack. If it is approached by more than one enemy (within 30') and can catch them without catching an ally, it breathes a 30' cone of acid.

Quenly does indeed open with blessing of fervour
He flies above the grasping hands, and waits to see if anyone wants transporting. If someone says yes, he picks them up.

And... We’re back! A bit late but it is morning in the world somewhere still, right?
Well, the good news it that I can indeed disable magical traps. Is it 2d4 rounds to try the knowledge checks as well? I would obviously take the fastest route possible.
The answer is that there are TWO kinds of disabling that can happen here for TWO kinds of effects. There is the disable device you can do directly on the Monolith, or you can attempt to either delay or change the effects of what the monolith is dishing out with your knowledge checks by perusing the hieroglyphs with Knowledge Arcana, Planes or Religion. Both the Disable Device (to work directly on the mechanism) and the Knowledge Checks (to change what the mechanism is doing) have to be done up close.
Given that you are a trap expert par excellence, you do think that tackling the hieroglyphs first could give you an edge, and be an efficient use of your time.
GM Hmm
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Dunia wrenches herself away from the hands, moving grimly forward through the sands. Eadie waits for Quenley, and then once Blessing of Fervor has been cast, starts moving around the quadrants. Even with telepathy and blind sense, the undead are hard to make out because they are not walking upon the earth, but walking on the air. It is made even more difficult by the sounds of battle from the other Sages, who have hordes of undead of their own that they are combating.
Still, Quenly’s dragon senses two troops of undead moving through the swirling sands moving towards you, and one undead thing that is significantly LARGER. Quenly casts Blessing of Fervor, and realizes to his delight that this is an ancient site! He picks up Fendel and both start moving towards the Obelisk! On the ground, Rufeo and Ariana move forward too!
As you wish. In response to Dunia’s request, Sinuhotep casts Freedom of Movement on her. Just then more claws burst form the ground, only to find that everyone is either flying or now unable to be be grappled! The claws droop sadly, denied their main purpose. Sinuhotep stamps firmly on one, crushing the bones beneath his heel like a bug. Go back to the ground. Clearly, you cannot prevail against us.
Only moments after the claws burst from the ground, the moans and hissing of the Restless Dead becomes louder from the raging windstorm. Then something huge erupts out of the sandstorm near Eadie. The bones and skulls of countless smaller creatures dribble from the joints and rib cage of this massive skeleton.
Clackity-clackity-clack.
But it is waiting to act still, because its appearance here was just dramatic, not an indication that it has its turn yet!
Reacting to the presence of the undead monstrosity, the monolith thrums to life, washing a wave of sickly green energy over the entire area, bolstering the gripping hands and renewing the Viigor of the ghastly corpses that enter near the sands.
It is channeling negative energy to both heal undead and harm you. Eek!
Channel Negative Energy (Heal & Harm): 6d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 2, 6, 6, 3) = 28
Ariana, Eadie, Rufeo and Ki’ala need to give me a DC 20 Will Save in order to take half damage. Only those within the bounds of the black polygon have to make this save.
Where you are on the map is WHERE you ARE. Keep that in mind and keep moving!.

good, adamantine, magic, slashing damage: 2d6 + 24 ⇒ (2, 2) + 24 = 28
Eadie pays close attention to how much damage her weapon does to Bone’apart.
“This is a test of nerve and courage, guys. If we pull together and all do our jobs, we’ll be fine.”
GM Hmm
Eadie fails to save against the negative channeled energy, but she does manage to hit the giant skeleton, Boneapart! Surprisingly for being so large and even flat-footed, the big guy is hard to hit! Broken bits of the skeletons of smaller creatures crash to the sands as Eadie slices through the big guy’s rib cage. She does not do as much damage as she expects, however.
All of this reminds the GM of another special ability of this lovely huge skeleton that the GM initially missed in its statblock... It has a starvation aura! Boo. This will not affect you if you have a clear ioun spindle on you, or are under the effects of any other spell, natural ability or item that sustains you without food.

Quenly chooses the extra speed from Blessing of Fervour. Quenly also chooses to gain a +1 insight bonus to saves and to skill checks for the duration of the scenario, recalling his experiences when he witnessed Earthfall first-hand. (Azlanti Wonders boon expended).
If the Draconic Ally's telepathy is sufficient to warn Quenly of the impact and dimensions of the starvation aura, he tries to skirt it. It's not completely clear where the boundary of that aura is, and I think I'm skirting it anyway by taking the most direct route to the obelisk. Speed is 70'.
fort save if needed: 1d20 + 13 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 13 + 1 = 18
Quenly carries Fendel to the obelisk. I don't want to drop him in the midst of the grasping hands - is it possible to land on the obelisk? If not, Quenly can safely hover above it, he can't fail on the Fly skill DC15.
Think I can help with one or two knowledge checks maybe - but will try to conserve resources. Standard action here though.
Quenly puzzles over the monolith and its negative energy function. He strains, as if with a terrible headache.

fort save if needed for starvation aura: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 Can a shadow illusion experience starvation? Does it need to eat?
Over to you Fendel.
GM Hmm
Fendel and Quenly manage to skirt the nasty starvation aura.
Quenly studies the Obelisk’s swirling hieroglyphs, bringing to bear all of the knowledge carefully gained from elven lore and his previous studies of ancient sites. He makes an amazing discovery. He can reconfigure the obelisk to dish out positive energy instead! This will happen automatically on his next turn.
As a free action, and because I am a super nice GM, Quenly or Fendel may try to identify Boneapart. Although they cannot see him directly, Eadie looked straight at the thing, and is connected to them through telepathy...
Fendel, you think (with all your vast experience) that no more knowledge checks are needed here. You can get straight to disabling.
GM Hmm
Then it is Boneapart’s turn!
It moves, triggering an attack of opportunity from Eadie and Ki’ala, and then its jaw unhinges, opening its mouth inhumanly wide. It convulses, acting like a cat hacking up a hairball.
The sultry female voice once again gloats in your minds. Yes, my precious monstrosity. Shower them in bones. Slay them, and then consume them so both they and you can serve me for all eternity. Then she pauses. Or maybe you can keep one or two of the sturdier specimens alive for me to experiment upon.
Clackity-clackity-clack-hack-HACK-RATTLE-BLECCCCCH!
A spray of broken and cracked bone shards mercilessly cuts and batters Eadie, Rufeo, Ki’lali and Ariana in a thirty-foot cone!

Sinuhotep, Will: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Sinuhotep saves for half!
Grey Ghasts, Will: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 10 + 2 = 27
The Grey Ghasts save for half as well... but that is still enough to kill them!
Green Ghasts, Will: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 10 + 2 = 16
The Green Ghast troop takes the whole eighteen points of damage!
Boneapart, Will: 1d20 + 14 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 14 + 4 = 23
Amazingly, Boneapart also fails, taking the full eighteen points of damage!

Ki'lala
fortitude save: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
Ki'lala growls as they approach, waiting to let loose.
GM Hmm
Ki'ala wrinkles her nose at the smell of the obliterated ghast troop, but she's smelled Rufeo's socks, so she's smelled worse in her time.
She makes her save!

Quenly's Dragon
Sinohotep, perhaps you could grant Freedom of Movement to Fendel here? It will allow me to set him down safely.
If the ghast troop had passed both saves, it would have taken half of 20% of the full damage. Shadow spells are flexible, but have their downsides.
The dragon takes the AC bonus from Blessing of Fervour, and ensures that there are other bodies between it and the airwalking ghasts.
Quenly
|
Quenly floats silently on dark, insubstantial wings. He glides around the monolith and takes aim with his bow. 5' step with fly speed.
I'm assuming that Fendel is either holding on to Quenly's legs, or has been set down outside of the grasping hands, otherwise Quenly will need to do something other than shoot.
Quenly chooses the extra attack from Blessing of Fervour.
longbow vs ghast troop, heroism: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 14 + 2 = 28damage, adaptive: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
longbow bof vs ghast troop, heroism: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 14 + 2 = 30damage, adaptive: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
longbow iterative vs ghast troop, heroism: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 9 + 2 = 21damage, adaptive: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
I've also assumed that the obelisk isn't providing cover against the flying ghasts.
GM Hmm
Sinuhotep double moved. His spell will have to wait, alas, which means that Quenley will have to delay if he wishes to shoot.
Quenly
|
Happy to delay - need to be able to drop Fendel to act freely.
GM Hmm
Quenly delays.
Meanwhile, the GM eagerly awaits Eadie's bad-assery.
