Survival@10=16. Is the mist natural?
Desidera was sad at seeing the bat killed, and was dejected as they followed the path that ascended the mountain. Other places were something that had always interested her, and she tried to read as much about the subject as she could. As a child, she was always talking to the travelers, mostly interested in their stories. Some of it was coming in handy now as they traveled, and ever since taking up traveling with her uncle, the use they had for it was increased, so she kept up her pursuit of information about different lands.
The pack she carried was enough weight that she had some difficulty moving easily, but all the items that she carried would hopefully come in handy. It was a bit annoying to have to reach back to empty the water out of the pot every now and then, though.
Wes Roberts
I'm okay to move on.
As Wes was walking along he suddenly couldn't take the awkward silence anymore. "Come on lads! All this rain and mist has me in the mood for a song! Does anyone know a good shanty?" Quietly he starts singing to himself his favorite sea shanty 'Down to Trinidad to see Sally Brown boys...'
Aodhiel
"I commend your soul into the hands of the god, poor creature," I murmur over the bat-thing's corpse, "and we ask your forgiveness for this thing we have done."
"We must proceed," I continue. "In honour of those whose lives have been lost in pursuit of this endeavour, and for those it will protect from evil."
I shudder, softly. It's so, so tempting to believe that the ends justify the means. Yet it truly does not seem as if we could've acted otherwise...
Kest Far Walker
"Unfortunately we couldn't risk someone getting rabies or the like, since we're apparently racing to save the world from flying ape cities. Some hungry creature will no doubt be thankful for this ones sacrifice." Kest pulls the deep hood of his cloak up and leads the party on the mountain path, keeping an eye out for obstacles on the trail.
Survival to predict if the weather is going to get any worse: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

The mist is not natural and the weather is going to get much worse. Wes provides a form of amusement as he sings. Soon the night air get chilly and you all are wet from the rain. It was slow ride up the mountain, but you appear to be on platue. There is cave and statue of some something as you approach. Everyone can tell that on one has been here in sometime. It looks like a good place to spend the night. Eveyone is exhauested from the ride up. The horses need rest. The mist appears to be a bay but you all feel very tired.

"We need a good, hot fire tonight," I surmise. "The horses need water and we, a meal - and we should try and learn something about where we are," I nod my head towards the statue, studying it.
Knowledge (religion) 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
[b]"...that's all I have," I continue (or, possibly, "I have nothing," depending on the result), as I explain what I can. "Can any of you offer a historical perspective?" I ask. "I'll accompany my niece, whether its to work outside, or to check the depths of the cave are clear."
Desidera Tahn
For the statue: K.(Religion): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14, K.(Arcana): 1d20 ⇒ 19
Desidera shook her head as she looked at the statue not recognizing any religious significance to the thing, not able remember anything like it(cave and statue size/description?). Of course, they were in a completely different part of the world, so she was not surprised at all. Her pack had been set to the side, along with her staff, and she casually pulled a sack out of the top of her admittedly stuffed pack.
"Why Uncle, will I be inadvertently teaching you more about how to gather food from the most different of places?", she teased fondly, setting the pot aside as well. "Or will you be coming along, Kayla?" She liked Kayla. Granted, she was all about her duty, but she could not blame her. If you gentlemen would be so kind as to set up camp, I'll try to see what fresh food I can find-- I wouldn't eat our rations except in an emergency. Also, do be careful. The fog is not natural, but it is entirely possible that it isn't because of us. Keep your eyes open."
Smiling at her uncle, Desidera waited at the mouth of the cave for her uncle to set his things down and everyone to get things decided before she went out to forage for edible things that were decidedly not-rations. "Uncle, if you're going to explore the cave, I do request someone with a bow or crossbow come with me.. I own neither. I have a signal whistle on me for trouble, and if no one has any signaling methods here, you could bang on the pot."
Kayla - Black scorpion
Not sure on the statue, as the others take a look, Kayla hears Aodhiel talk of exploring the cave.
My lord, I will check the cave for safety, it is why I am here
Kayla quickly vanishes, disappearing into the darkness of the cave checking things out.

I can take ten on survival for a total of 20 and provide food/water for all of us unless the DC is is higher than usual. If there's no food to be found with survival I guess we could try to hunt a mountain goat or rabbit or something. Is there enough grass/shrubbery/water for the horses around? Is the cave entrance big enough for them?
With others set to scout the cave Kest takes a few minutes to unsaddle and brush down the loaned horses. "I'll hunt with you, but we need to hurry. This rain is going to get worse before it gets better." He leaves most of his equipment in the cave out of the rain, taking his bow and a few arrows in case any game presented itself. "Whenever you're ready, my lady."
DM Ashman
Kes is able to find food for everyone. There a couple of rabits that he was able to get. Yes the Cave is big enought for the everyone to include the horces.
So just to make sure of where I am tracking our heroes/
Arwen and Wes art trying to start a fire next the statue.
Aod and Kayla are at the cave.
Kes and Dee went hunting.
If I have read everything correctly...Sorry its been that kind of week.
Desidera Tahn
"Let us make haste then, good sir." Appreciative of Kest's presence, Desidera headed out with him. With his help, they were able to bring back a fair amount of food that they would not be resorting to breakfast, either. When he got the rabbits, Desidera switched her efforts to herbs and tubers, figuring that tonight was a good night for stew, not to mention that it was one of the things that also was even better the next day.
While they foraged, Desidera made small talk where it was proper. "Have you seen many places? Most of my experience was on a farm until I traveled with my uncle." She loved stories, and this was the best way to get them, in her opinion.
Kest Far Walker
Kest wasn't really one for small talk. He looks overat Desidera while he cleans the rabbits. "Yes, I've been all over Varisia." He notices her odd skin and eyes. "You're, what, an angel or something? I didn't know angels did farm work."
Desidera Tahn
Desidera could only laugh briefly at a statement that would have been flattery were there any other recipient. The idea of such a lofty being happily feeding pigs and milking cows in the dawn of morning made her smile. "'Or something' is more accurate." She was taking time to strip the herbs and clean the tubers while Kest cleaned the rabbits. "Everyone in my family has the same bloodline, it just showed up in me for some reason."
Thoughtful, Desidera considered that her (great)uncle displayed the same traits that she did, then she did.. "It's possible that it is something that skips generations, perhaps?" Frowning slightly, she realized that they would have to take a trip back by the family farm in the next few years.. If she was right, then the cultists might come back.

Hunting Party
As each of you look around for food you notice there is path leading away from the path you took. It appears to be well traveled..
Cave Party
As you enter the cave you notice that seems to be warm. There is some sign of foot traffic. It appears to be animal like an ape.
Campfire
You can see the statue start to glow little and the mist starts to get thicker.
Kest Far Walker
"Well, I wouldn't know anything about that. It's an odd world we live in." Kest finishes up with the rabbits and looks around the area as best he can in the fog. [b]"Looks like this place is a little more popular than I originally thought. There's a trail over this way.
Does the path head towards our cave?
Desidera Tahn
The sack with the herbs and tubers inside it is forgotten, raising an eyebrow at the arch. "Well... I hope that is not an everyday occurrence.." Rather than be blindsided by something emerging, she moved off to the side to get a good look at the phenomenon. After a moment in thought, she shook her head to state the obvious. "Clearly it's a gateway, but where did it come from?"
"Do you think we should get into the cave, or see what comes out of this active portal?", she asked Kest.

Wes gives up starting the fire and begins to stare at the statue. "Somethings fishy here mate, I don't like what it's doing to the mist. " he says to Arwen. The he calls out-which is probably a bad idea in retrospect-"Oi! Everyone should be getting to the cave very quickly! Something strange is afoot! "

Kayla moves deeply into the cave as she does. She hears all too familiar voice.
We got here just in time. Our spies on Sandpoint mentioned that the Bard was traveling with the Tome had just left portal outside of Sandpoint. Now all I have to do is take from you.Ntanga says. There is huzzahs coming from what appears to be 4 white apes.
Kayla can see another figure on the ground but cannot see clearly because of Ntanga.
A weak female voices says The magic in this book it too much for you Ape. Its power is killing me from even carring it in the portal. How do you think I ended up here in this godsforsaken place.!
Before I send I you to your gods half elf tell me about he Tome.Ntanga says.
So to be clear about what is going on.
Kayla and Aod found a cave that has Ntanga and his group with the Bard you were looking for. The magic of the Tome tossed her here. This happend before you arrived. She sought shelter in the Cave, Ntanga is his group tracked her from the otherside of the mountain. That is why you saw no tracks on your way up.
The portal is now active and simply waiting.
Kayla - Black scorpion
Kayla stays hidden to listen to what is going on. after a moment she tries to maneuver to get a better view of the situation.

Sorry I got things mixed up in my notes..to be clear
Aod and Kayla are in the cave with Ntanga.
Wes is now by himself because Arwen went to go check the cave.
Kes and Dee return and see the portal/statue and the cave.
The Tomb's magic does not come from this world silly Ape. That is how the Shory built their flying citites. The magic they used came from another place not ours. The wounded Bard says.
Kayla has moved in position to see that bard is badly wounded as if burned. She bleeding as well. She matches the description of the person you where sent to look for. Ntanga says to the bard If that is all you can tell me be at peace. He reaches down and snaps the Bard'
s neck.
Ntanga says Let us leave and he makes his way to the entrance.
Aodhiel is looking at the animal tracks, as you lift your head your realize Kayla has gone off. Aodhiel also hears someone at the start of the cave. From the footsteps it sounds like Arwen.
Meanwhile Wes is ?
Kes is still hunting along with Dee but then finished to make their way back to camp. They see the portal active.
Kayla - Black scorpion
besides Ntanga, how many other apes are there?
Kayla quickly makes her way back to the others at the cave entrance.
as she hurriedly approaches, My Lord, quickly outside The courier is dead, the apes have the tome, they are heading this way. we must hide unless you wish to face them now.
stealth to avoid detection by the apes: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (11) + 17 = 28
Kest Far Walker
Kest draws his bow when he sees the glowing statue as they approach camp. "Well, that's interesting." Kest heads into the cave, assuming that was where the rest of his party lied. He is startled by Kayla's appearance and exclamation. The apes? How? Regardless, he exits the cave and takes up a position where he can enact an ambush on anyone leaving the cave. "We're not supposed to let them have to book. We don't have much of a choice."
Stealth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Aodhiel
I hurry after Kayla... and find a scene of disaster. Swiftly I kneel besides the courier, at the least sign of life, I'll channel the healing light of Ragathiel into their failing body.
"Repent, and you'll find forgiveness for even this gravest of sins," I tell Ntanga - "but I will not let you harm others."
DM Ashman
Ntanga has 5 apes beyond himself.
Kest sets up an ambush so he has COVER behind a rock. Kayla and Aod I will assume are still outside the cave.
As Kayla and Aod make their way to the entrance of the cave, they run into Wes, Kest, Arwen and Dee. After hearing the event in the cave, Kest goes to rock that provides him cover to shoot from. At this point the Apes do not know your there. You can set an ambush to retake the Tome or Parley with them or anything else the group decides. If you ambush them they will be surprised then I will roll for Int.
Desidera Tahn
Wes' yelling moved her from her slightly out-of-the-way position, into the cave, hurrying to see what was going on. Cover was not a position that she was able to take, and her place was by her Uncle's side. The sack got tossed near the campfire, hurrying to join the others. At the sight of the apes-- and hearing Kayla's exclamation-- she sighed sadly, seeing the chance for a peaceful resolution slipping further and further away.

I take it that Aodhiel has moved past the apes to reach and check on the courier? If so, Desidera will move to join him by the courier as well.
Kayla - Black scorpion
Ambush it is. Kayla says and she dashes into a hiding spot so that she can circle around and get behind the apes as they pass.

((RETCON))
This... was not going to be pleasant. With the others taking positions in order to ambush the group of apes it seemed that they were destined to fight, she took up a hiding position as best she could as well, drawing the greatsword from its sheath on her back and offering a silent prayer to any gods that were listening. She was never happy when things came to fights, much less when any killing was involved. She could tell that they would be seeking out Ntanga's master after this.

Here is the scene. So you can make mental notes. From the Cave to the Portal is 150 Feet. Everyone in the Party will have a Surprise attack on the Apes. The Apes and Ntanga are in this formation. Apes 1 & 2 are rear guards about 10 feet from the Apes 3 & 4 who are forward. Ape 5 is about 5 feet ahead of the Formation. He is not paying attention. Ntanga is in the middle with the Tome. Everyone made the stealth check and Kayla is coming in from behind, I will assume that Kest is off to right with an arrow ready. And everyone else will just charge or cast from left or right sides. Also to speed things along from now on Crit rolls are Crit you do not need to confirm it. Just do the damage and move on.
Also since the group has done awesome in the roll play department. I will award Advantage. It is D&D 5E mechanic that allows you to roll two d20's and take the higher result.
[/ooc]
The Lead ape comes out of the cave and turns to Ntanga. He mumbles and the group moves forward. There is 20 feet from entrance of cave to the last rear guard (ape 1&2). Ntanga is the open. The portal being open does not surprise them.
Everyone take actions and I will post on Monday
Kest Far Walker
I'll attack Ntanga.
Kest opens fire from cover, aiming at the ape with the book.
Longbow X3: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19 +1 if within 30 feet.
Longbow Advantage X3: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22 +1 if within 30 feet.
Piercing Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 3 +3 if within 30 feet.

Once Ntanga passes by Kayla's position, and seeing the attack begin with Kest's arrow.
Kayla leaps at the leader ape. her Katana blade unsheathed with lightning speed.
katana attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
advantage attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
damage if hit FF AC: 1d6 + 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + 1 + (1) = 8
stealth again if possible: 1d20 + 17 + 4 - 20 ⇒ (9) + 17 + 4 - 20 = 10
burn ki point for +4 to stealth as swift action, and -20 penalty for "sniping"
If possible Kayla will use a dose of Drow poison on her blade so a DC 13 fort or unconscious
DM Ashman
Ntanaga is walking when an arrow from the dark hits him in the right side. Then a young ninja manages to hit him in the back while racing across to the ape, she vanishes again. At that point the Wes comes running with his sword drawn and hits the ape. Stabbing him the chest, the ape life body drops to the ground as well the Tome. The apes are in panic.
Waiting for the others to post
Aodhiel
I dash into the center of the group of apes, snatching up the precious book. As I do so, I summon Ragathiel's divine energy to myself, and the veiling mists that protect the righteous swirl up from nowhere... "Retreat, friends," I call, "let no more innocent blood be shed this day!"
Casting Obscuring Mist... my spell list is still the same as declared in the first page - thinking about it, I might be one action over if picking up the book counts... if so, I'll pick up the book and cast mist next round.
Desidera Tahn
Desidera is right behind her uncle as he moves, realizing that his aim is to recover the book, whereas her target is that collar that Ntanga was wearing. It seemed to be causing him some discomfort, and it was out of place, so she wanted to get a good look at it. If they could manage this fast enough, they might be able to get out unscathed.
If they could not, her uncle would have someone at his back. The sword was a significant weight, but she managed it fine, crouching to search for the clasp on the collar. It might not have a clasp if it was as magic as she was suspecting.
___________________________
Same boat, I suspect. Move action to move with Aodhiel, Standard action to find and unclasp the collar. I'd hate to have to decapitate a dead enemy.
DM Ashman
The Mist rises ups covering the good Cleric as his niece runs to him. She bends down to reach for Ntanga's chocker. Finding the necklace easy to unlock. She scoops it up.
At this point the mist is covering the Aasimar. The apes are yelling well in Ape to each other..Combat will now begin.
