Any penalty for failure?

No. You can take 10, or even 20, though 20 would take about...2 to 3 hours.

"Gotta be better way..." Acewak mutters as his gears start turning. He lays out his bedroll, weaves some bog weeds together into a crude rope, ties them to the bedroll, covers it in mud, puts the grasshoppers he was saving on top of the mud-covered bedroll as bait, and waits until a toad appears.

Craft (trapmaking, untrained, +3 Int +2 Junk Tinkerer): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

Dackelbark quickly gets bored and decides to check out Pumpkin to see if she's got that wonderful Bouncy trait. Then he makes his move.

Eyeing Dack for being almost too eager to help her, she shrugged and accepted his help after concluding he was accepting her superiority to the other whelps.

When a mass of mud squirmed, she pounced and scooped out a squirming toad easily the size of a fat apple. It puffed up impressively and squealed at her indignantly at being pried free of the muck.

Ha! Pumpkin get biggest, loudest toad.she declared with pride, holding it above her head for all to see. It squirmed and pawed at her hands to free itself. She name...Buff!!

Female Goblin Warrior 1

Stuffing her new fat toad safely into her crotch-mounted purse and pinching it shut so it couldn't leave,Pumpkin beamed at her success. Then she smacked Dack in the back of the head affectionately, avoiding hitting him with the muddy ax knuckle.

Dackelbark instinctively squeezed Toady tight against his chest as Pumpkin thanked him for his help, nearly causing the poor creature's eyes to pop out. Once his brain had stopped rattling inside its skull, Dack turned to Groglurk. "What her said! Me help you find toad fer yer own. Me look, you leap, OK?"

Dackelbark scans the bog for some telltale bubbling and maybe a pair of beady, googly eyeballs protruding from the morass. "Uh...me got nuthin'."

Dackelbark's struck with a sudden revelation: "Hey! Me can look some more! Toady--you look fer more like you, got it?"

Acewak mashes some bugs together into a paste, and Dackelbark's toad to get a bit of it's secretions. He's hoping to attract a toad with the mixture.

Craft (Alchemy): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

The mixtures does indeed attract a toad, and along with Dackelbark's aid, Acewak makes his dive.

CMB: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

But the toad proves too elusive.

Acewak is having a bad day, and takes 20, not caring if the rest leave him behind. When he finally catches a toad, it is the smallest, most sickly looking toad ever. Acewak says, "I name you 'Fluster'; you flustered me." He throws the toad in his sack with disgust.
