The Abyss Approaches!

Something wicked—and monstrous—stirs around the rugged Isgeri town of Saringallow, where the hated legacy of noble Chelish diabolists runs deep. With the recent disappearance of several apprentices, the nearby menace of particularly grotesque goblins, and the unsettling rumors about the old Sarini Estate, Mayor Sandra Trinelli knows that she needs help, and she needs it fast! The heroes must confront one of these crises, or all three, if they hope to stem the tide of darkness that looms.

Hello everyone and welcome. This is a formal recruitment for Gallows of Madness with a bit of a twist, that being with only characters of Pathfinder Compatible, Non-Paizo (third-party) classes. Please see my profile for my assumptions on post rate / dispute resolution / etc. Below are the character creation details and considerations to create a character for the game. As always, if there are any questions or something I have not yet addressed, please ask.

Character Creation:

  • Abilities: 20 point-buy
  • Alignment Any, provided this does not cause disruption. This module assumes characters are neutral or good.
  • Hit Points: PFS hit points. Maximum at first level then 1/2+1 at level up.
  • Race: Core Paizo races are automatically approved. Uncommon and Rare races need approval. Any third-party race meeting the criteria set out in the ‘Class’ section below (4 stars, or my approval) is approved.
  • Class: Any non-Paizo, third-party Pathfinder Compatible class from a product that has gained four or more stars from Endzeitgeist is a safe bet. Ask about products with reviews of three stars or less, and, if available, submit snippets of the specific rules in this product you wish to use. This criteria extends to archetypes and class options as well.
  • Feats: Any Paizo feat deemed legal by Pathfinder Society is approved. An easy way to see if your feat is PFS approved is to search for it at Archives of Nethys, and if it has the Pathfinder Society logo next to it, it is legal. Additionally, any product source that meets the ‘Class’ criteria above (4 stars, or my approval) is safe to use, this includes supplements designed specifically for the class.
  • Equipment: Starting gp is 150. Any equipment that meets the criteria described in the ‘Feats’ section is approved.
  • Traits: Two traits. No drawbacks. Any trait from a source that meets the criteria set forth in the ‘Feats’ section is approved.
  • Setting: You will be adventuring in and around the town of Saringallow, a large town in Isger that was once home to Chelish nobles-turned-diabolists, until they were hanged by the revolting townspeople. The people are quite superstitious and fearful of strange creatures, so keep this in mind when choosing your race. It is strongly advised that characters of Chelish noble descent not answer this call to adventure.
  • Backstory: A paragraph can suffice here. More is always appreciated. The adventure is neutral on if the PCs are strangers or from Saringallow, so your background can be most anything. You only have to explain why you would answer the mayor’s call for adventure.
  • Other Rules: Scrolls will be PFS style throughout the adventure, meaning no distinction between arcane/divine. If it’s on your spell list, you can cast it from an identified scroll.

PFS credit: This module will be played in campaign mode for Pathfinder Society credit. This means that, if you wish, credit will be applied to one of your existing (or newly created) Pathfinder Society characters as if you played a pregen.

Selection Criteria: I will evaluate all applications through next week and make a determination. One slot is already determined, and will most likely be playing a Pyromancer, arcane fire caster, so 5 slots are up for grabs. If we have five applicants or less, then we are good to go. If there are more applicants than seats I will evaluate applications based on the order of priority: party composition > Backstory > Setting/Theme Appropriate > Class/Mechanics (crunch inventiveness)

Thank you for the interest, and I hope we get to play this great adventure together!

Silver Crusade

dotting. Thinking dragon rider, if thats ok with you?

You know, I might actually go with the Time Thief class. One of the first 3rd party classes I ever ran across and to this day, still sticks fondly in my mind!

Ok- here we go. Is the Direlock class from Forest Guardian Press approved? It only made a 3 on the Endzeitgeist reviews, but most of the problems IMO won't screw with anything until higher levels.

Here's the link to the Direlock class:Link

And the link to the Endzeitgeist review (P.S., it's a long one): Review

Any third party? Path of War... Psionics... Priest...Archivist...

*Dies of information overload*

Jokes aside, thinking about something from the Spheres of Power system. Something along the healer and buffer end, with a bit of crowd control mixed in.

Anyone know of a good construct-type race that would be legal here? My first thought is Warforged, but while there is a conversion to Pathfinder stats available in my HeroLab, I'm not sure it fits the star rating and all. I'm thinking of an Aberrant Aegis, who's basically a robot that tinkers with himself, making progressive improvements as the game goes on.

@rorek55: Yes, dragonrider is approved even though it doesn't have an EZG review.

@Artemis P.: Direlock is approved. It actually was revised since that 3 star review, and now holds a 5 star review.

@Ouachitonian: There is the Ironborn of Questhaven from Rite Publishing that's pretty good.

@CaptainFord: Never seen one "in the field". Sounds fun!

@PixelsAreGod: SoP and SoM look endlessly interesting.

dotting,

I know it sounds simplistic, but I've wanted to play a Knight for years. Now I just have to find a review...

Oh and decide if I'm going human or something a little more exotic.

@Robert Henry: I don't think EZG ever reviewed Tome of Secrets. While I think that book is a mixed bag, I do not view the knight as problematic. It is approved.

What are the primary types of enemies we'd be facing? I'm still trying to figure out what I want to submit, and if, for instance, we're facing a ton of undead, I'd want to do something different than if we're fighting a ton of humans (for example)

No great presence of undead. There are a mix of races/opponents. Much of the adventure concerns itself with battling Abyssal taint.

Scarab Sages

For PFS purposes, what is the level range of the chronicle?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Levels 1-3 are legal characters to apply chronicles to. You receive 3 xp for each of the three adventures, however. So you would need to apply the chronicle to a level 1 character in order to apply all three chronicles to the same character.

For character creation for the game, I might not have said it explicitly, but characters should be created at level 1.

So, if we apply with a level 1 character, what level will we be finishing the chronicle? Sorry, I've never played PFS before. Have you got plans on continuing?

Don't want to sound a jerk, but... if we're going to try all these 3PP shenanigans at level 1 and that's that, well... I'd have to ponder the effort.

Your 3 3PP character will level up to 3 by the end of Gallows of Madness. The PFS character you apply credit to, due to the way xp works there, would level up to 5.

No worries, it's a legitimate question. I don't have any problem continuing on with these characters in more campaign mode modules if everyone is still on board. Daughters of Fury could fit nicely on the heels of this one. Could be a fun story we cobble together!

Nice, 3rd with a possibility of going on sounds good.

DystopianGM, I’ve been looking at third-party races and I’m having trouble picturing any of them interested in Saringallow. But I do think it would be ‘flavorful’ if a Lawful Neutral Tiefling Knight was sent to intervene.

General concept:
With your permission I would use the Devil spawn heritage. The ability modifiers aren’t very ‘cheesy’ but I like the idea of a Hellspawn helping set things right. Whether he is an actual descendant of the Sarini family or just someone capable the mayor of Elidir sent to help solve the problem.

I would also ask to use the ‘Pass for Human’ and ‘soul seer’ alternate race traits.

Goodness.

Very interested in anything that allows SOP and SOM. It's so hard to come by and my local group (me and my buddy) have adopted it to our theorycrafting shenanigans and most games we play.

I'm new to play by post, but have played rpg since I took over someone's sorcerer in Red Hand of Doom over ten years ago.

I would love to play this game if you'll have me.

Human Sphere Skald. Hamish "Mosh Mouth" Moshmoth. Voice like velveted gravel and mulled wine. He may or may not be modeled as a tribute to Tom Waits.

If raging song doesn't agree with many folk, he was originally a Spell Warrior. It required subbing the counterspell abilities for the counterspell feat chain from SOP. I would prefer the spell warrior archetype, but to save on DM work im happy to simplify.

Additionally, if allowed, I'll be trading feats and proficiencies for a martial tradition and the adept progression for spheres of might. Should have him done and posted by the end of the day.

Got the base skeleton for my app finished. Still need to work on the equipment (as always) and the personality, but mostly finished for the most part.

Scarab Sages

Would the races from Kobold Press' Advanced Races Compendium be allowed? Endzeitgeist didn't give a rating because of his own involvement in the book.

I've had the beautiful hardcover since the Kickstarter but have yet to actually use it in a game.

Oh, you. Stop going after my heart like this. *grin*

I would like to submit an idea for The Priest, as it's something that's caught my eye for a while, but haven't had the opportunity to play.

I'll look into reworking an idea, but a Tiefling Priest of Nocticula could be plausible, if I'm not stealing anything out from under PixelsareGod.

-With permission, of course.

@Robert Henry: I don't have a problem with those choices. Consider them approved for your knight. And yes, a Hell-spawn knight combating the chaotic abyss is quite flavorful.

@SynchroniciticallyChallenged: Hmm, I would prefer all base classes for the party to be non-Paizo. If you can't make the character concept work without the skald, let me know.

@Keante: I would say, generally, that book is a safe bet. But without knowing the specifics of the race you want to use I can't say for sure. If you wanted to email or PM me a link to the snippets you wanted to use, that would be great.

@Me'mori: Base tiefling is approved. Keep in mind you'll be battling agents of the Abyss, so you'll have to explain why Nocticula is sending her agent there.

Last question before I finish the crunch.

Are you offended by the trait Rich Parents? I would use the money for splint mail, heavy warhorse, a coldiron longsword, an alchemical silver warhammer and clothing/jewlelry for Extremely Fashionable.

*Much crumpling of paper is heard*

Of course. I have a "deadpool" conscript somewhere. And a "blue mage" Thaumaturge. I will have something together in no time.

@Robert Henry: On a knight that trait seems appropriate. Approved.

Been away from play by post for a long while and want to get back into it. This looks like fun so gonna dot for interest.

Will work on build over next couple of days... But can you take a look at lemurfolk for me as a race? I can't find where EZG reviewed it, but it looks like it could be fun.

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/3rd-party-races/kobold-press/lemurfolk/

One challenge, there isn't a move speed on pfsrd. I am assuming that as a small race it is 20, Thoughts?

If the race is approved I am thinking a lemurfolk luckbringer that has sticky fingers and a penchant for shiny things.

@BC4Realz: Luckbringer seems appropriate for a lemurfolk. This class/race combo is approved. And yes, 20 ft. is a reasonable assumption. I will look to see if I have the text for the race in my downloads.

DystopianGM wrote:

I do own Blood of Fiends, may I utilize that in my character creation as well?

The tentative reason I'm going to go with to explain their presence is that it is part Rite of Passage, as well as being an investigation into whether or not Lamashtu is responsible. I will explain more in the backstory.

(sub)Domains so far: Chaos, Night, Lust

Ooo! Looks like Endzeitgeist gave the godling classes a 4.5/4 star review! I shall be submitting one later this week.

@Me'mori: Yes, Blood of Fiends is approved.

This is my appliation, Go'el the Wanderer.

I've created him under the assumption that we reach 3rd level. If we are to continue, a class feature should be retrained if no one is against it.

Here's the submission for Artemis P, Savage Bear the Half- Orc Direlock!

Disclaimer 1: For whatever reason, I'm experiencing horrible writer's block right now, and am really struggling to get this guy's backstory written onto paper. It's been about a day, however, so I did want to go ahead and get it at least posted up- but I will probably be adding some more details to his story, as soon as my brain decides to cooperate.

Disclaimer 2: I do really hope we run past level 3, if only because the Direlock has some really cool abilities it gets later in the game- and if I'm testing out a 3PP class I don't get to play normally, I'd really like to get into higher levels with it, to get a good feel for the class.

For one of the traits, how do you feel about Student of the Air? (3pp Tricky Owlbear Publishing).

I really like the flavor tie to a lemurfolk that can glide.

"You routinely practiced jumping from rock to rock on the mountainside and studied the birds as they flew near." Maybe from tree to tree for a lemurfolk, but same idea.

Also thinking the trait bonus to the fly skill might come in handy if I try gliding anywhere.

Crunch is mostly done and I have the framework of a backstory in my head.

Submission will probably be up around this time tomorrow.

@BC4Realz: Yes, that trait is approved.

It looks like we've got some good applications so far! I want to thank everyone for the interest so far and give you an updated timeline. I will close recruitment at the end of the day this Friday. I should have a decision to you Saturday or Sunday, but at the latest, the following Monday. Then for those selected we'll clear up any lingering threads and get started next week!

DystopianGM, I would like to present my submission,
Dachus "Dac" Dolabellio, godling son of Desna and resident of Saringallow. Please look him over and see if he might fit.

Declan:

_______________________________________
An orphan of the system, all Declan knew was that one of their parents had been some sort of demon. That was very much evident to them growing up. Their heritage had at least allowed them some leverage that they learned to utilize early, but the teachings of The Unquenchable Fire seemed to be too bright for their upbringing. That did not prevent them from plying their charms in Calistria's houses to escape the worst of treatments, however. It was not until they chanced upon the words of Our Lady in Shadow did they feel something that spoke to them, exemplifying everything that happened once the sun set and the light left. Some feared the night, they felt at home, and wrapped it around themselves like a comfort.

As they grew, so did their calling, despite their not proclaiming their deity as loudly as some of the other gods' clerics. They built their influence on favors and regard, finding their comfort the truths that the night revealed. Secrets are what led them to where they were now, and rumors of abyssal activity motivate them, seeking the kinship that they never really knew.

It looks like we're just shy of two days away from the deadline. I have noted the following applications so far (please let me know if I've left anyone off), split into three classifications:

---Melee/Ranged---
Dachus "Dac" Dolabellio - male Human Mighty Godling
Savage Bear - male Half-Orc Direlock
Go'el the Wanderer - male Half-orc Conscript
Robert Henry - Tiefling Knight

---Skill---
Colt R. Warwick - male Human Time Thief
BC4Realz - Lemurfolk Luckbringer

---Caster (Divine/Arcane/Other)---
Declan - male Tiefling Priest

Wow. Well, maybe I should have a look at something more "spelly" and change my submission. Just to offer you a wider range of choice. I'm not sure I'll be able to do that in time, though.

This is RH's tiefling Knight, Onnello Ustradi. The crunch is done, I will have his fluff done hopefully within the next 24 hrs.

He would have lost his noble father (and subsequently the families estate and wealth) in battle during the goblin wars. Raised by his mother and grandparents he will be part of the proud military tradition protecting the trade routes. seeing that Saringallow is near said trade routes he will be sent by his commander to assist the town with their 'problem.'

Sorry about the delay RL has been keeping me busier than usual.

Ok, so I'm thinking I'm going to change my submission, if that's ok with you. My brain clearly doesn't want to write Savage Bear's backstory, but Sidhe's was much, much easier to come by. Plus, it'll give the party another caster, and a second demigod; which is pretty sick. I can see it now: "Don't mess with us, we've two demidgods on our side- and those guys, yeah, well, if they can kick the demigods asses, be afraid of them too!"

Anyways, here's Sidhe Bianca Danann, Eldritch Godling, daughter of Pharasma and savior of the Pharasman church- maybe. They say it's fated to happen, but as we know, fate works in weird ways.....

That's awesome!! I hope we both get picked!

My submission is finally ready, I think. May I present LatooRadoo, the Lemurfolk Luckbringer.

*idle thought* Can the Godlings grant spells?

Presenting Cabo Kreusch, the Constructor, who summons animated objects to crush his enemies and isn't shy about smacking people straight in the face with his magic either.

Me'mori wrote:

Only at level 20, when they achieve demigod status, and only to their followers.

DystopianGM, Onnello's fluff is finished.

With all the godlings Hey, 'TheWaskally' it's been a while :-) running around, I hope you don't mind a kid who just wants to restore his family's honor.

Background:

Onenllo’s father, Raphael Ustradi was a nobleman of Isger and proud of it. The Ustradi family came to Isger with the Taldor's Seventh Army of Exploration in 2133 AR. The progenitor of the family, a retiring Calvary officer named Marcus Ustradi was knighted for his bravery in the war. Also he was given a track of land west of the Chitterwood forest. Proud to consider himself one of the first Isgeri Noblemen of Taldor birth.

Raphael passed down his military training to his sons and grandsons. As the country grew and the trade routes became important, the local lords were commanded to keep a contingent of men-at-arms to protect the Conerica Straits. The Ustradi family was proud to do so.

Though not wealthy they were able to maintain their estate through wise land management and shrewd arranged marriages. Often times marrying rich merchants daughters (to give their family clout) or Chelaxian noblewomen (whose families desire to send far away to prevent possible embarrassment).

This is how Michelle Ustradi, Raphael’s great grandmother introduced the tiefling bloodline into the Ustradi family. The fathers had arranged for a grand wedding and a large dowry. The wedding was a huge affair going late into the evening with much dancing and drinking. Her bloodline wasn’t made known until the following morning, when in the light of day Gregor Ustradi realized that his father had married him to a Chelaxian bride which had a tail.

Raphael himself married a Merchant’s daughter. A beautiful smart dark-haired girl named Orillia Hatcher. Orillia was the eldest daughter of one Stephen Hatcher A well-to-do shipping magnate who’s family had made their fortune running shipping barges on the Straits. The Hatcher family had estates north of Elidir nearer to where Isger meets Druma and Multhume.

Everything changed with the Goblinblood Wars. Raphael, due to the strength and training of his men-at-arms was able to save several of the women and children who lived on the estate. Delivering them to safety. But in the ensuing days, his heavy cavalry was overrun. He and a few riders were able to retreat, but he was mortally wounded. His body and personal affects were sent to Orillia who had fled north to her fathers property. It was there that Raphael was buried.

Onnello grew up there at his grandfather’s estates. The Hatcher’s property, due to it being so far north had seen little damage from the war and had survived mostly intact. His mother insured that Onnello knew his heritage and the heroic acts of his father and his forefathers before that. His grandfather insured that he was trained in courtly ways as well weapons and military methods. Onnello made an oath to himself to restore the good name of the Ustradi family. Hoping to one day rebuild the destroyed lands and properties near the Chitterwood forest and transfer his fathers remains to the family mausoleum..

When Onnello was of age, he entered the Isger military. With his maternal grandfather’s financial support, he was able to secure a place in the heavy cavalry in a position fitting his birthright, a knight.

When the commander of his unit informed the men that the Mayor of a town named ‘Saringallow’ (near the Conerica River and thus Isger's “Conerica Straits”) had sent word that they needed help from a ‘great evil,’ Onnello volunteered.

Appearance:

He is six foot tall with a barrel chest, thick shoulders, arms, wrists and long fingers. He has raven black hair and dark grey eyes, plale skin and a hawk nose. If anyone looks closely they will notice his tongue is slightly forked and his fingernails (when visible) are talon-like and black. His face bears the marks of combat: a broken nose, a scar on his chin that looks like a cleft and a burn on the right side of his head that has knarled his earlobe. His hands and wrists are marked by several scars and a couple of broken fingers.

When presenting himself in civil company He dresses in courtly finery: often wearing silk gloves and cologne.

When protecting the travel-ways or expecting a fight His armor is splint mail. With shortsword and Warhammer at his sides. His shield bearing his family insignia: Four white chevrons on a field of green and blue.

However he is dressed, he wears his father’s coldiron longsword and brooch with the family crest. Along with the pewter and bronze signet ring that was passed down generation to generation from Marcus Ustradi the progenitor of the family.

Personality:

Though very friendly and outgoing, He remains conservative, organized and disciplined while looking to serve the greater good. As a member of the military and nobility of Isger, he is committed to the protection of “Conerica Straits" and the wellbeing of Isger in general. He desires to restore the honor and name of his family. Then return to the lands that was given to his forefather and restore the family estate and fortune.

On the On the Myers Briggs scale Onnello is "The Commander"

It looks like we have a few hours until recruitment is closed, Good luck everyone.

Submitting Yuld, a scholar of the stars. A bit of healing and a smidgen of debuffing to fill in a support role.
