Australia is a terrifying place. Even more terrifying that Florida, where everything is trying to kill you. Including all the drivers!

My first weekend living in Miami, I encountered a four-way stop. Simple right? Plenty of these in other parts of the US where I have lived. Yeah...
Miami drivers decided that the rules were: one side get to go as much as they want until the cross street drivers edged far enough out into traffic to risk a collision. Then the flowing traffic would stop and the cross street traffic would get to go as much as they wanted, until the original side would edge in enough to cause that flow to stop. Rinse and repeat.
We also saw reversing on the interstate and packs of motorcycle wheelies on the interstate (though not at the same time).
We paid 3-4 times as much for our car insurance living in Miami as we did in NoVa.
I'm so glad you got the yeti leader when you did, Aristu! Because in a moment he was going to use cone of cold to blast all of you from the sky.

I don't normally do this but I was super curious so I looked up the Roc's fly speed.
With Longstrider being a bonus to Speed and Fly gives you a Fly Speed equal to your Speed, I am now only 5ft slower than the Roc! Weeeee! This build is fun!
Just be aware that the Black Roc of Talon Mountain is no ordinary roc. It's a legendary creature.

I still probe my wife with the question about playing every other Sunday again. The answer remains the same.

Give the apparent power of the roc, it's probably magical tattoo ink.
Which makes one wonder what the centaurs intend to do with said ink.

Better question - is everyone (other than the bird) somewhere between the cabin/egg and the cave?
The original adventure had this as merely a roc. The many bits of advice I read advocated making it quite a bit tougher. I felt that two levels higher wouldn't be too bad and I have no doubt you could handle most creatures of the same level, but flying combined with strong winds and little artillery means you were just outclassed. Sorry this was a bust. It takes so much long in a Play-by-Post than it would around a table that I feel guilty for wasting a month or more of everyone's time!
I'll try to make up for it by keeping the adventure going at a good pace once you get off this mountain.

Balance is always a weird thing. If we had rolled a bit higher we could all get to it and this would not have seemed so bad. I am not sure anyone ever passed one of the fly checks. Which is actually pretty improbable.

It seems we're very much a "get in their face" party instead of an artillery party. The only reason I even got close to the thing was the multiple speed bonuses and Haste.
I never mind being knocked down a rung or two as an adventurer. Reminds me that we're not the biggest fish in the very large pond of Golarion.
As the ol' song goes.

Prepared spells makes all the difference, too.
An aerial opponent requires summoned creatures with Flight or ranged attacks ... with Piotr's prepared spells, that meant a memorized Fireball, the Raven Swarm or a weak air elemental.
Now, if he had been prepared with multiple copies of Fireball or other ranged spells, it would have been different.
Human Bard (Sorcerer) 10 [hp 128/128 | F+18, R+19, W+18 (+2 vs Sleep) | AC 28 | Perception +15 | Focus Points: 3/3]
Yeah, I don't think it was completely undoable, but we needed a different plan/prep. The sheer size of the wind aura really limits the abilities that can work. For instance, Dirge of Doom can't reach it, Fear spell can't reach it. We need more ranged options for everyone.

I'm traveling this weekend, so posting may be delayed.
An Adventure Path exists somewhere between a sandbox and a railroad. Even in this most sandboxy of all Paizo's AP, the tracks are still present.
So I have a question for you as players: Is it more fun to stumble onto the answers to your big mystery before you're ready for them? Or is it better to experience the story as written, by winning over the good graces of the Nomen centaurs?
You tell me which sandbox you want this muddled metaphor of a railroad to head into.

I am ok with doing things out of order as long as its not insta-TPK territory and it doesn't mess up other sections to do them out of order. So it kind of depends on how much of a railroad we are supposed to be on.
Well, put more plainly, you might be about to discover where the Varnholders went. Or not. A hex is a very big place and a mountain hex doubly so.
You're supposed to be 9th level before entering into that part of the story. I'm not going to pull punches if you get there before 9th level. But if you continue to do quests for the Nomen and slowly earn their trust, you'll be at least 9th level by the time you enter there.
The difference between 8th and 9th isn't catastrophic, but with the example of the Thunderbird in mind, I'd be cautious.
Male Human Sorcerer(Fey) (Bard) 10 - [HP 98/98 | F+18, R+17, W+18 | AC 25 | Perception +15 | Focus Points: 2/3] [Exploration Mode = Search]
I certainly don't mind if we stumble across a later part of the story. But, if you (Scott) think it's more fun to keep to the storyline, I trust your judgement to make it so.

Do what you think is best.
If the latest creature is any indication, I need to up my playing of Piotr.
I have to temper what I think is the "best" storyline with what I think will let us finish this AP before I'm too old to remember I'm in it!

I vote for accidental discovery. What fun it would be to need to marshal forces to help us rescue the Varnholders!
Or overcome a serious foe!
Without meta-gaming too much, I'd imagine we could determine we're out matched and 1. Make a hasty retreat. 2. Devise a plan to give us some advantage.
Ranger <Flurry> (Druid) 10 | AC 28 | HP 136/136 | F +17, R +21, W +18 | Focus 1/1 | Perception: +20 (+22 for Initiative) | HeroPoints: 2 | Speed: 45ft (55ft w/ LS) | Exploration: Scout(Wildnerness)/Search(Settlement) | ◆ | ◆◆ | ◆◆◆ | ◇ ◈ | ↺ |
fwiw, we could try to synergize some buffs/debuffs better.
There's a lot to be said for minuses to AC by imparted FlatFooted (Prone, Grappled, Flank), Fear (DoD, Intimidate, etc.), Clumsy (???).
Just a thought.

I am going to say that more often then not one level doesn't matter much. Sometimes dice make it so it doesn't matter what level you are. If it would help with the progression of the AP to hit the info earlier then that sounds good to me. If it doesn't change anything in the end (IE. we have to still hit everything eventually) then I am not sure it matters.
No, you definitely don't need to do anything in the adventure -except- discover the fate of the Varnholders and follow those threads. Getting the Nomen on your side is more kingdom-related that story-related.
I hear the team wanting the result to be more sandbox, less railroad, so here we go.
I've added a "line through a circle" symbol to the map to show where you have not explored.

Not hugely relevant to this game, but a random note as I have been looking at Gunslinger stuff. I find it sad that the only deity who uses a gun is a NE daemon, [url=https://aonprd.com/DeityDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Cixyron]Cixyron[url].
I kind of figured there would be some hero god or something that used one.

I could see that. I am just surprised that since there are whole areas that use guns that at least some gods haven't popped up with a scatter gun.
